True story- a few years ago I knew a trespasser was hunting my land. I found where he was driving into a neighbors land, hiding his truck in a low draw, and walking in to hunt mine. He left his truck with a bottle of scent blocking spray on his tailgate. I emptied the bottle and refilled it from my bladder and put it back on his tailgate.
I’ve always been convinced that scent blockers never work to hide your scent. All they do is paint an illusion that you are farther away from them than what you really are which gives you an advantage. Also the deer rarely get close enough to pinpoint the source before it’s too late!! Enjoyed the educational purposes of the video tho.
Bingo. Most deer have encountered humans and human smell many times. But as they touched on at the end the key is reducing the smell to a level they dont feel that the threat is nearby. In other words its so weak they thing it is either days old or far away. I tried ozonics last year combined with scent control and i had many deer downwind under 50 yards and they were spooky as heck but they didnt blow and they didnt run off. Without anything in the past when they got downwind it was game over. Deer blowing like crazy and running off looking back right at me lol
@@davidhammer154 went out past few days hunting small piece of property 60 acres and had deer spooked from my morning stand in the afternoon hunt I was close enough to hear them blowing 3 different times through the afternoon… last time I went out I rubbed pine all over me and had a doe with two yearlings come up to my tree got a lil scared but didn’t blow feel like you can not really ever cover up your scent from an adult deer
Most people dont know what it takes to eliminate your scent. Most of the remaining people are too lazy to go through it all. Wind is your friend….. use it
@ML-ks2lj agreed. I doubt he'd ever do it. I take nothing from John, he's accomplished more in the woods than just about anyone, in a really tough hunting environment. No disrespect, but isn't the scentlock regimen, it's his hunting ability. He made his actual living in sales in the hunting world. I dunno how much that colors his stance on scent control.
As someone who has worked heavily with ozone sanitation, I highly advise against being in a confined space with an ozone generator. I've seen people get hospitalized do to leaks in their homes.
@@chriswright6767 It really depends on the size of the generator, the size of the space, and the duration it's going to run. A couple minutes might make your lungs feel weird, but won't send you to the ER. I still wouldn't recommend it though, it's really not good for you to breathe in.
@@chriswright6767 you don’t want to be in close proximity with ozone for a long period of time. I would say no. But it depends on how much ventilation you have. And at that point the ozone wouldn’t be doing much to sanitize your scent.
Myth busters did an epic scent show. Proved you can not beat a dogs/deer nose! That dog is amazing, and he's having a blast!.... Lucky puppy. Great handler and buddy.
I think a big factor is also attentive-ness or attention. For this test, the dog is focused and actively searching for something he knows is there. A deer is passively scenting the air for something that may be there while it’s attention is focused somewhere else. The key is to mitigate your scent and play the wind to a degree where so little of your odor makes it to the deer they overlook it. It doesn’t matter if they smell you if it’s minimized to a degree where they either don’t notice it or they dismiss it.
But a deer also has much better olfactory sensitivity than a dog (I've heard 1000x better), and as a prey animal, will avoid anything that is "wrong". Avoiding being upwind is a better approach imo
That’s exactly what I was going to say. It’s a cool experiment but all we learned is if you’re running from the cops and they bring out the dogs you’re screwed. lol for real it was a neat to watch though
This is 100% true, I have had dogs walk right past their favorite food and miss it in the grass and then telling them to search is a elevated to their senses that there is something there because the dog is trusting their handler. So this isn’t a test of smell at all. Passively smelling is way different then active alerted smelling. Just like the handler said he is active using a search pattern. Deer scan and move and smell passively and in most areas are used to some human smell think WMA. But if a deer is in a heighten state of alertness there isn’t a single thing that it won’t run from a smell or a bird chirp or stick snapping or a squirrel. That’s why we hunt bedding areas because the deer a calm and not alerted and relaxed so they are actively looking for threats.
I always hunt down wind because of the way our property is layed out and me and my family have killed big deer and I personally have never been winded by a deer you just have to learn how to have good scent control
@@conservativeprodigy2604 you would think so but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out turkey hunting and sitting in the blind smoking a cig with no scent covers or anything considering we’re hunting turkey and had big deer walk straight up to the blind and stick there heads in
My grandpa would always smoke his cigars and would kill deer. He always said it doesn’t matter what you smell like it only matters where the wind blows. Always keep that in mind.
Back in 2013, I decided to research what is in the most effective scent sprays and I came across a study of a chemist who tested which scent sprays work the best and why. He used live cultured bacteria. Then he published his own DYI formula based on his findings. He demonstrated that his formula actually did kill the germs that cause odor but he also demonstrated that all sprays are limited as far as effectiveness which I think is demonstrated by the dog in your video. This formula was very close to some of the top brand of 2013 as best he could tell. I made his scent spray formula for several years for pennies on the dollar for store bought. If you want to know the formula for the most effective scent spray, I published it on my channel back in 2013 here - th-cam.com/video/-CTVSGngwsU/w-d-xo.html - If you don't want to watch the whole thing just go to the 1:12 mark for the formula and take a screen shot. This formula works as well as any scent spray CAN work but the effectiveness is limited by the very nature of scent sprays. Great content guys, thanks for sharing.
Something I learned 20 years ago was to hunt high. Like no less than 23 feet and have never had a deer wind me since I started doing that. I never use sprays or Any of that junk. But enclosed box blinds work to.
I've done a ton of hiking & backpacking in my life & have filmed some of it, one of the reasons I got into hunting is I would see deer & bear just walking through the woods making ton's of foot noise, talking to my camera, no scent control, no camo, white shoes lol, moving briskly, no care of the wind & I still run up on something at least every other hike/trip. Not always but most of the time. Since I've been learning to hunt & controlling my speed & just walking slowly & trying to avoid stick's & pine cones I'm seeing only slightly more deer. I feel like there is a divide between the hiking/backpacking & hunting community, from this side looking in the hunters assume a lot of times they are the only person "out there" when in reality you have hikers, backpackers, surveyors, schools, loggers, farmers, poachers, homeless, meth heads & all kinds of other random things that go into places you think are really remote. A lot of animals are used to people & I truly believe don't care nearly as much about us as many of these videos claim, & I ask this if HUNTER X claims scent control really really works like a lot of these talking heads do then what other thing's are they telling you that are also BS that they support? Again all that is from a intermediate backpacker & noob hunter but if you just focus on walking slower, not being to loud & going in the woods a lot/covering ground you will be fine getting close to & seeing animals. Some of these critters including the deer & bear are often drawn to sound so one could even say making the right noise helps, I've drawn in a number of deer over the years just making noise or getting something out if my pack & there it is peeking at me from 20 yards away, really my dudes just go out there & go slow you will be fine you don't need to do most of the thing's I've seen in a lot of these videos. But this video is gold. In my backpacking/hiking encounters the deer would always hang out for a moment or walk a little closer then leave but one thing that DOES work is a fawn/doe call to bring them back. Once the deer pops out of sight hit that call a few times & so far it will bring them back for another look. Hope this helps! Don't fret the small stuff too much you will see nearly the same amount of deer just walking through the woods as the guy spending tons of cash soaked in deer piss moving at a snails pace.
Most of what you said it true, but there is a difference in being able to see an animal and being able to harvest an animal. In most bow hunting situations they have to get within 30 yards and not be alerted by your movement. Which for most people means being in a blind or up in a tree. I see deer all the time when walking my dog, but normally they are crossing the trail or you just see a white tail and hooves, neither of which I'd be able to take a shot at in a hunting situation.
All true statements. I have seen some videos and podcasts talking about the possibility of pheromones playing a role in what the deer do when they smell us. It's been proven that animals, including us, give off different pheromones depending on mood. So the theories researchs/hunters are trying figure out is what types we give off when we're in a "hunting mood" or "predator state" vs in a "joyful hike state". It will be interesting to see what people come up with to test this in the future.
I seen a drug dog hit a bundle of dope wrapped in tape and that was vacuumed sealed and that was dipped in transmission fluid vacuum seal again then wrapped in carbon paper vacuum sealed again and inside a welded metal container inside a gas tank and the dog hit it like nothing, I couldn’t believe it , these k-9s don’t get enough credit for their capabilities also the dedication from the Handlers . Great test thanks for y’all’s hard work .
I feel like the drug packer should have gotten some serious props for all the effort though. I'm sure he got a lot of jail time instead. But seriously, I appreciate that dedication
I think scent control is like wearing camouflage while deer hunting. It’s more of a mental/confidence situation. Neither are necessary hunting deer. If you are a good hunter you KNOW what works. And it’s not scent sprays and fancy camo. If you hunt the wind and use proper techniques you can wear a pink dress and some of your dads Brute cologne and still kill deer. JS
Yeah, people forget the Whitetail was almost hunted to extinction by guys wearing plaid wool jackets, with brass framed 44-40s, smoking cigarettes! Biggest thing is not letting them know something is afoot so they start trying to counter your wind strategies and low hunting pressure. I've been within 4' of a does in turkey season, several times, with no scent cover, but she couldn't see me and didn't care about the scent cause humans aren't a threat in spring.
@@davidmendenhall4090 during rut a few years ago I was hunting in ground level box and an 8 point walked up to box and stuck his nose into my shooting window after I had 5 minutes before sprayed some doe in heat out window as wind was swirling!!!! I could have thumped him on nose! It happened so fast I couldn't record.
@@softaildiaries yeah, the cross contamination that's created during this entire process eliminates the results from being anything else other the therm showing that a dog can indicate on par. Your foot scent trail will be there for quite a long time, and brush scents even longer. There's "tracking" and "trailing" for our scent dogs. Tracking is finding the scent on the ground, and trailing is finding the scent in the air when they stick their heads straight up. When going to the stand any brush, branches, leaves, ground foliage, or other things youn brush against are going to contain your scent. Given that even if they took descented showers, they more than likely did all of the following that contains powerful scents that re-contaminate themselves - dried off with scented towel - walked through house with scent signatures all around - touched door handles, equipment, and other items that left scent on them - drove in a vehicle that resaturated them with tons of scent - perspiration when getting going to and from the stand - the list goes on and on of ways they resaturate themselves. So, all of that leaves a scent trail to follow even if dousing yourself in stuff to implode and neutralize the main scent molecules because you can't get every single square MM of your body and clothes. And since we know canine olfactory abilities are unimaginably superior to most, you're not fooling it just with some sprays unless you put EXTREMELY strict scent control protocols into place to eliminate any cross contaminating. But these sprays don't "mask your scent" to the point of making you invisible either. They're designed to give you a weaker scent signature left behind for deer to smell, so they liken your scent trail with a much older or further away scent so that they will likely come in range. If deer thinks your further away, they'll come closer in. But, literally NOTHING will beat being downwind of them or a dog even. But, even then, the really mature ones will circle around wide to catch any drifting scent downwind before they move into an area just out of caution and experience.
@@strikeforcek9149 thanks for the reply, you guys are awsome. You are truly blessed to have such a good pup. He's way better then most deer I encounter. Thanks for y'all's service!
@@softaildiaries like they said in the video though, the dog is looking for the scent, and gets a reward for finding it, the deer will avoid it in most cases, i like the skunk analogy, is it enough to scare it off, or does the deer live and habitat close enough to other human areas where the scent is present most times... too many variables. wind is your best weapon, but i'll try anything to make that deer come 10 yards closer... and then of course the rut where they just don't seem to care...
I would like to see John Eberhart do his "scent control regime" and jump in one those boxes just to end the debate. The only scent control is the wind. Period.
Love the channel. Having a good time with friends wherever you go. Think bow hunting, especially deer hunting, is a lost art. Love the Christian bend - thanking God. Keep up the good work.
I love Mattis! Found him on tik tok awhile ago! They’re my favorite! I love seeing what he can do, but I was sobbing when I seen the videos of his retirement 😭
Got to remember that in early bow season the bucks are a hell of lot more smarter than when the rut happens When I was younger and rutting my scent of smell was locked in on one thing and just like the deer makes you lose focus on your surroundings,I almost got killed several times myself
I’d like to see a similar test, but instead of being in a box on a ground go to the next level. Put yourself in a tree stand/saddle at hunting height. Will that height make a difference? Will the dog be able to pick out the tree you’re in? Just something that came to mind while watching. Good video
I'm a K9 handler and did that test on a friend in a 20ft ladder stand. My buddy was in a scent lock suit, rubber boots, freshly showered with scent killer shampoo and doused with scent killer spray. He was hidden in a 6 acre block of timber. I sent the dog from the downwind side and he found the target like he hadn't showered in days.
Hunt the wind. Simple as that. If you only have one stand and it’s the wrong wind. Sit on the couch, enjoy your time with family. Then when the wind is right you will be more successful! A strategic hunter is better than the hunter who goes out every day.
I see a flaw in this and that’s they should have sprayed every box with the sprays and then the person. That way the dog doesn’t focus on the box with the spray, because every box has the spray and the dog will solely rely on the smell of a person. Amazing video either way.
Well the only issue with doing that is the fact that the woods doesn’t t smell like scent killer so if the scent killer does have a smell that the deer or a dog could pick up then you would know not to use that brand
John eberhart takes it to a whole new level compared to these guys. Only handles the cloths with clean gloves, air tight totes, face mask, etc.. He might not completely fool a deers nose but I believe he does a good enough job to make them believe he isn't close and a threat
Great job guys ! I agree with everything that your test may have proven. BTW I had a German Shepard that looked just like your K-9 friend there and his nose was incredible. Sometimes I think we overthink scent control products. By far the best scent control product is the wind and it has to be in our favor or your busted. I have tried everything and I can’t say anyone one product worked better than the others. Now days I just look for cedar trees and pine trees and rub the oil from the young trees on my clothes and boots. I also put my boots in a box with corn in it when in the truck. It may not work but it saves me money for better arrows and broad heads by not buying expensive sprays that may or may not work. Lol ! Thanks guys ! Great job !! 👍👍
Fun fact: nose jammer used in Central FL will attract BIBLICAL PLAGUE levels of love bugs. (During love bug season of course) It will ruin your hunt. Ask me how I know lol
21:52 Literally inhuman reflexes. Trainer throws the ball from behind the dog and he notices it hit the box and snatches it up right before it hits the ground.
100 percent smoke covers human scent and deer don’t relate that to a threat for the most part . You guys should try a smoker from tractor supply see if it helps you game changer for me
I have used a bee smoker with wood chips for over 20 years with excellent success . Deer don't associate the smoke with humans. It works! Think about it. The only reason you don't see the big companies advertise it is because they can't make money on it. Try it and you will be convinced.
@@BowhuntingRoad I'm not saying they can't smell you, I'm saying using smoke doesn't alarm them. They don't associate it with a human. You can believe what you want. I've used smoke for 20 years and I know it works. I still use scent control on my gear and use soap, I just add smoke to everything before I go out. The only draw back is you smell like a campfire when you get home and need to shower.
I like how Jeff Sturgis has put it before. Anything that may minimize your scent trail coming and going to and from the stand. Not word for word but along those lines
Very educational and I agree with Lee that anything that can help should be tried. Also you are in a deers home, your smell is also something new to them. The smell of a tractor or smoke maybe just mean caution and not danger. Play the wind and be safe
My hunting mentor explained it to me as simply as this cover scents are still scents! 8-9 months out of the year the deer are walking through the woods never ever smelling Hunter specialties, dead downwind, nose Jammer... Until you come creeping
I always use elk or deer piss on my soles and legs, doesn't cover it up but it absolutely does not say human 🤣 and I've had does and fawns follow up behind me and walk past with me in the bush off the trail. I held my rifle out and she walked by grazing it close
This was fun to watch even though most everybody knew the likely outcome. I have seen some videos and podcasts talking about the possibility of pheromones playing a role in what the deer do when they smell us. It's been proven that animals, including us, give off different pheromones depending on mood. i’ve had this work multiple times we take the leaves and all the natural plants of the property and boil them and take that water as a spray and ive had success with it
The best way to do this was to take the same item and place them in all of the boxes with a different spray on that item and see which one he goes to first. Once detected, remove that one and then let him do again, and each time remove the one he detects till you get down to the last one. Eliminate the reward so there is no incentive for him to return to the same box. I’d be curious to see which scent eliminator, or cover scent is the last one standing.
Being a dog handler myself I've often wondered how these products are bought and sold. Every handler when he goes to training is taught dogs smell each individual odor and people use the "grandma's chicken noodle soup" analogy. You walk in her house and smell that she's cooking soup. The dog walks in a smells the chicken, the celery, the carrots, the onions, the noodles and so on. So basically these sprays will just add an odor to smell WITH your human odor. Not to mention.... a deer has 297 million olfactory receptors and dogs have 220 million.
I love this idea, but I have a question. Do you think b/c the k9 was present during the spray down(s) and use of ozonics that he associated those smells to Lee of the bat? This would skew the results as he was not only picking up on Lee, but he was following the associated scent from the spray downs. I think it would be more controlled if the k9 was off site completely before each test.
That’s a great question but the k9 can 100% smell them and the spray and May even relate the spray with the human but can def still smell the human on the hat shirt doesn’t matter there really is no way to hide drugs from a k-9 the can smell through cadaver bags vacuum sealed even though those will minimize the smell drastically! What I’ve seen and heard is you can minimize your smell by using natural items in the locations you hunt and not get the deer to blow but be a lil frighten which I feel they won’t remember as long as when they blow and leave knowing something was there
I think most people are not gullible enough to think that we can eliminate odor, or just hunt while ignoring the wind. There are a few, I suppose, who don't figure this out right away but they eventually learn that eliminating odor is not an attainable goal. But there is a lot of value in reducing human odor, which is what I use Scent Killer for. Reducing ground scent while traveling to and from your hunting location is a good example. th-cam.com/video/ax8vMJMnV3s/w-d-xo.html
Great Educational video. Props To the police officer for taking time help out with his K9. Seems like there is absolutely no way to get rid of or hide your sent. The deer will just smell you and whatever you spray.
Should have tried a full scentloc system. It would be interesting to see if it works like advertised. I use scentloc and it seems to work better than not using it. A test like this one would show how well it works or not.
i wish you guys would have tried wearing a scentblocker or scentlok gear and see if that would have worked. i have never believed in the sprays because they give off an odor that i can smell. and if i can smell it..... but the activated carbon in the clothing has me intrigued whether it would have worked. thank you for the time it took for you guys to put this together. definitely debunks the theory
We live in the country and are always up in our woods doing stuff and I always wondered if deer weren't as leery of human scent, meanwhile my friends who are big hunters always say stay out of the woods as much as possible during the hunting season as to not get scent all over, personally I think if deer are use to seeing and smelling humans all the time who aren't posing a threat, they'll be less scared of them
I hunt the same kind of areas they do. 80 yards from mansions with joggers and walkers all over. The deer still know when you're in the woods as a posed to walking down the road.
It does work to a degree. It just doesnt make you odorless. People just think when they put it on that they're invisible. It only helps to a certain degree.
@@1957cajun Id imagine more of your scent get carried around from your cloths. Its not going to make a world different or anything but a little bit is something atleast.
Screw the haters this was informative on the scents. I agree with the predator vs prey on the way they act to scents is probably the biggest difference between the dog vs a deer.
scent elimination isn't going to make any difference. The only difference is walk in super early. The colder the trail, the better. Beyond that, you're just playing the wind.
Scent killer kills odor that's why it's called scent killer. It will not eliminate odor, just reduce it. Which is what we have known all along and what this video showed. There is value in reducing odor.
Great test. Would love to see the same test, same controlled variables, with a Scent Lock suit and Scent Blocker suit. Both “charged” or worn to manufacturer specs. I’ve never thought the sprays did much but kinda curious as to the suits. Thanks guys and keep up the great work and vids!🦌
You can’t hide your scent period. It will always be in the wind. Dogs have anywhere from 150 million to 200million olfactory receptors depending on breed. Deer have over 300 million. The dog is trained to follow it but deer will stay away 100% of the time. The only factor you have in your side is rutting bucks that will look past your scent while chasing doe. But also the older the buck, the more likely he isn’t going to just over look your scent regardless of doe estrus hormones.
I’m 35 years into bow hunting and I’ve never believed any of this crap! If you can smell O zone a week after it’s been in your truck ,imagine what the deer are learning😂 Play the wind people.
your scent will always find the ground, no matter how high you are. It can help, being a K9 handler myself, and knowing a deers nose is better than a dog's, you cant hide, only minimize.
@@chrisguyjr I’ve seen them stumble across my ground scent and try to pick me out. I usually hunt mornings and the thermals are rising at that time. Of my scent is hitting the ground it’s pretty far away
@@isaacwiegman8430 you can definitely help yourself, no denying that. Im just saying just because they dont spook, doesnt mean they dont know your not there, some deer will tolerate it, some wont. If the wind is in your favor, of course their nose is not gonna help. Basically im saying, scent products are still a waste of money. Hunt the winds and use the thermals in your favor and thats all you can do, Basically stating the obvious
I’ve always known that you can’t hide your scent. But you can dilute it, so maybe the deer thinks your are farther off and doesn’t panic. Maybe it won’t realize you are behind the bush taking aim and about to kill it. Every little bit helps now how about testing the Hecs system That would be interesting too
I think there were more deer killed when there were no scent sprays on the market. My father killed many deer while smoking in a deer stand, but he ALWAYS hunted down wind. I say save your money and just hunt the wind, you'll be fine.
Should have tried smoking your clothes, then smoke all the boxes with a bee smoker. Do it with natural surrounding material. Pine needles, oak leaves, maple leaves. Id be curious about that.
HERES A TIP FROM A HUNTER WITH 47 YEARS EXPERIENCE....... The best thing I’ve found a person can use for a cover scent for hunting is this: Take a big storage container/Tote & put all your hunting clothes, hats 🧢, face masks, anything you going to wear on your body, even your backpacks 🎒 Ect. .....Then put it all in the tote & go to Tractor Supply/Lowes/ Home Depot Ect.and buy a bag of Cedar Tree 🌲 shavings. THEN SPREAD THE CEDAR SHAVINGS IN WITH THE CLOTHES AND PUT THE LID ON IT AND SHAKE THE SHAVINGS IN REALLY GOOD WITH THE CLOTHES & OTHER ITEMS. Leave it sealed up in the container at least 24 hours before going hunting. Then take the clothes & items out on hunting day right before you’re going hunting. Then pull items out one at a time and shake the shavings back into the container. Deer and wildlife know the smell of cedar trees🌲so they don’t pay that smell any attention, it’s natural to them. Also bugs, biting flys, and insects will not bother you either, they hate Cedar trees 🌲! Also Buy you some cedar masking spray or raccoon 🦝 urine Spray to spray on the bottom of your boots 🥾. So when you walk in it masks the smell of your line of travel. These are natural smells in the wild that wildlife smell on regular basis. If U do this and you’ll see more & spook less deer 🦌 away, trust me!! My favorite cover scent on my boot 🥾 bottoms if I’m gonna be hunting in a tree 🌳 stand is 1 squirt of raccoon 🦝 urine on bottom of each boot sole before I walk to my stand. If I’m gonna be hunting on the ground I use the cedar scent on bottom of my boots🥾 before I walk in. I’ve had deer 🦌 to come to the tree 🌳 & look up at me in the stand & my face was fully masked, I didn’t move a muscle and the didn’t get spooked. Who knows what they was thinking, maybe they thought I was one heck of a big Cedar raccoon nest up there 😂idk 🤷🏼♂️? But of all the things I’ve used to mask my scent & I’ve tried them all, take it from an old timer..... that method works better than all that spray to spray your clothes With for Deer and other wild game. The only thing I’d add to the cedar shavings and raccoon 🦝 urine or cedar spray on the boots 🥾 is this: Take a earth scented body wash & shampoo and take a scent free shower. That’s the method I’ve used for the last 25 years and I’ve had great success. If you’re hunting any part of the country that does have cedar trees growing in that area it works. U wanna get up close and see more deer 🦌 you try that and see! 😉
to make the test harder wouldnt it be easier to just put clothes with scent killer on it in a box instead of no human so u don’t have to worry about sweat or human body odors
I never believed in scent thief till last year... its the best! Long story short my female dog went into heat and messed up a baby male dog to wear he had to get an operation. I used scent thief and it killed her smell and had the dog able to calm down.. ppl don't realize it numbs those receptors... its awesome
Best chances, are when the buck is rut crazed, and wind in your favor, or hunt where deer are use to alot of human scent which is not where most of us hunt. Great show, and content.
this is part of the reason why i always choose to still-hunt deer, and almost never use my treestand. i prefer "hunting" the deer, and in doing so, you can use the wind to your advantage.
Best way I've found in a stand is to place your stand with the wind carrying your scent into an open field or pond, so they literally can't get downwind
You can spray anything you'd like to, animals can still smell your breath! That's why I chew on leaves & sticks while deer hunting. Great video, SUPPORT THE BLUE.
I would like to know if any product reduces your scent enough to make a deer think you’ve already left? Obviously deer come across predator scent all the time and they must be able to detect concentration or they’d be running all the time. I’ve seen deer come in 30 min after a bear and not spook so they must have known the bear was gone.
I use scentlok clothing and scent spray and still get caught by deer. I think it works to a degree by letting less of your scent to reach the deer. Not sure if that's what's really happening, but when I do see deer downwind it does seem that they get closer before they react. Of course that's hard to prove. Interesting test though, that dog is awesome

Most people dont know what it takes to eliminate your scent. Most of the remaining people are too lazy to go through it all. Wind is your friend….. use it
The ticket is to be down wind
I would love to see this test done with John Eberhart all suited up in his scentlok gear.
🤣🤣
Would John do it, that's the question.
Yes concentrated ozone can be very dangerous even deadly.
Is it safe to use in a ground blind ?
@@chriswright6767 It really depends on the size of the generator, the size of the space, and the duration it's going to run. A couple minutes might make your lungs feel weird, but won't send you to the ER. I still wouldn't recommend it though, it's really not good for you to breathe in.
@@chriswright6767 you don’t want to be in close proximity with ozone for a long period of time. I would say no. But it depends on how much ventilation you have. And at that point the ozone wouldn’t be doing much to sanitize your scent.
I've seen that first hand being in apartment maintenance for a few years, they won't let you in that unit if the ozone machine is running.
And, do one test in the morning and in the evening due to thermals rising and falling
Absolutely correct, couldn’t have explained it better myself
Great video. I want to take a moment to say how much I appreciate y’all’s efforts. This video was not cheap to make. Great job!
Only way to beat the nose, be downwind of it, period

My grandpa would always smoke his cigars and would kill deer. He always said it doesn’t matter what you smell like it only matters where the wind blows. Always keep that in mind.
Yeah and we aren’t hunting the same deer that Grandpa did either.
Awesome channel, you got a new follower lol
@@charlessherman7335 agreed. In addition, there's a difference between the tolerance level of a young deer and a mature deer.
JS
Hunt the wind...the end!

I'd love to see how the the same test would be out of treestands.
You'd have the same result, because of the flaws in the testing methods used and all the cross contamination issues.
I think you'd have the same results because of the walking path to the stand. How long until the scent path is off the ground is the real question?
@@softaildiaries yeah, the cross contamination that's created during this entire process eliminates the results from being anything else other the therm showing that a dog can indicate on par.
Your foot scent trail will be there for quite a long time, and brush scents even longer. There's "tracking" and "trailing" for our scent dogs. Tracking is finding the scent on the ground, and trailing is finding the scent in the air when they stick their heads straight up.
When going to the stand any brush, branches, leaves, ground foliage, or other things youn brush against are going to contain your scent. Given that even if they took descented showers, they more than likely did all of the following that contains powerful scents that re-contaminate themselves
- dried off with scented towel
- walked through house with scent signatures all around
- touched door handles, equipment, and other items that left scent on them
- drove in a vehicle that resaturated them with tons of scent
- perspiration when getting going to and from the stand
- the list goes on and on of ways they resaturate themselves.

What I’ve seen and heard is you can minimize your smell by using natural items in the locations you hunt and not get the deer to blow but be a lil frighten which I feel they won’t remember as long as when they blow and leave knowing something was there
I've found smoke from a fire at camp helps, but we have a lot of control burns around me.

i wish you guys would have tried wearing a scentblocker or scentlok gear and see if that would have worked. i have never believed in the sprays because they give off an odor that i can smell. and if i can smell it..... but the activated carbon in the clothing has me intrigued whether it would have worked. thank you for the time it took for you guys to put this together. definitely debunks the theory
Would urban deer be used to smelling human scent regularly ?
We live in the country and are always up in our woods doing stuff and I always wondered if deer weren't as leery of human scent, meanwhile my friends who are big hunters always say stay out of the woods as much as possible during the hunting season as to not get scent all over, personally I think if deer are use to seeing and smelling humans all the time who aren't posing a threat, they'll be less scared of them
I hunt the same kind of areas they do. 80 yards from mansions with joggers and walkers all over. The deer still know when you're in the woods as a posed to walking down the road.
I don’t think I seen the best scent eliminator. Deception scents!! Hands down the best
It amazes me how people absolutely convince themselves that their “scent cover” works, because they saw it happen.

I’ve always known that you can’t hide your scent. But you can dilute it, so maybe the deer thinks your are farther off and doesn’t panic. Maybe it won’t realize you are behind the bush taking aim and about to kill it. Every little bit helps now how about testing the Hecs system
That would be interesting too
I put my clothes in a 50lb bag of deer corn. Lol
😂😂
This was great! Good job guys….
I think there were more deer killed when there were no scent sprays on the market. My father killed many deer while smoking in a deer stand, but he ALWAYS hunted down wind. I say save your money and just hunt the wind, you'll be fine.
but did he kill Big deer? anybody with a cigarette and a rifle can kill many deer
@@chickenjoe1003 He killed 16 deer during the time he was able to take me and he killed deer ranging from spikes to 4 11-pointers.
I am impressed with Matti, loved this video man
Should have tried smoking your clothes, then smoke all the boxes with a bee smoker. Do it with natural surrounding material. Pine needles, oak leaves, maple leaves. Id be curious about that.
It’s always a good day when y’all post
The only thing I’d add to the cedar shavings and raccoon 🦝 urine or cedar spray on the boots 🥾 is this:
Take a earth scented body wash & shampoo and take a scent free shower. That’s the method I’ve used for the last 25 years and I’ve had great success. If you’re hunting any part of the country that does have cedar trees growing in that area it works. U wanna get up close and see more deer 🦌 you try that and see! 😉
Excellent demo...yup....best play the wind for mature Deer or you're gooned....well done!
to make the test harder wouldnt it be easier to just put clothes with scent killer on it in a box instead of no human so u don’t have to worry about sweat or human body odors
That would be the perfect test, if your shirt could kill a deer.
Cool test and awesome dog and handler.
Loved the Biden quote at end!!! Lol
Loved this!!! Kinda wish they could have done just a little bite work but hey, maybe next time? 😁
Lee's closing speech must have been written by Biden lol
Next time yall should use Scent Thief! Haven't been winded 6 years.
I never believed in scent thief till last year... its the best! Long story short my female dog went into heat and messed up a baby male dog to wear he had to get an operation. I used scent thief and it killed her smell and had the dog able to calm down.. ppl don't realize it numbs those receptors... its awesome
I can already tell you scent control products are a scam. Without watching this.
Awesome vid and edits and filming and idea and products and dog and test. Thanks for being in the police department.
Hey, new to hunting and all that, but what’s that bottle that they’re squeezing at around 12:20
