I’ve hunted since I was a kid and I’m about 65 years old now. I have used all kinds of gimmicks to try to cover my scent. I’ve used all the sprays, all the scent wafers, kept my clothes in bags of pine limbs, kept my clothes outside the entire hunting season, tried not to sweat walking in to my Stand, used scentless deodorant shampoo and laundry detergent, and I would still get busted by whitetails. Lesson for me is scent covers are a waste of money. So several years ago I stopped spending money on them. Instead I would concentrate on hunting the wind, watching how I walk into my stand, not touching anything, and eliminating unnecessary movement while I’m in the tree. This is what works for me. These scent elimination companies are making a lot of money off gullible hunters. Again this is just my experience and opinion. If you feel they work knock yourself out. But I’ve never had a deer smell me when I was downwind of it.

I think lowering the scent profile is the goal really, nobody really believes you can hide it - but you can make the deer think you are further away than you are. I only use Dead Down Wind and have watched deer come right down the trail I use and never bust me. I hunt natural elevations and ground hunt, make the wind my friend and it's all good - years now... just saying.

I was the exact same, recently just last year I stopped using Scentlok. I do think it does work. I think the whole thing is it's not completely eliminating odor but reducing it that you might be able to fool the deer on how close that deer might think you're at. I just found that I was spending so much time on the scentlok and to be honest I found other camo that is more lighter and warmer. So I'm with ya, just using the wind now.

As a canine handler for some 26 years it was good to see the video because some 30 years ago we experimented with having our dogs finding the decoy who was wearing scent proof hunting clothes and sprayed down with odor eliminating spray. The dogs found the decoy without any problem every time and the deer have better scent recognition then a domesticated dog. I believe the reason the dog in this experiment found the scent free guy first is because of the cover sprays/ odor eliminating sprays. Think about being outdoors and the dog is smelling chemicals that aren’t natural to the environment. Grass smell and human odor is everywhere, but now the scent eliminating chemicals is something new in the environment.

  • @robertdeis132

I want to say that dog went to the sent control guy first because he may have been producing some kind of odor that was new to the dog. The other two guys, he recognized their scent and the scent control guy was new and the dog was curious to find out what that new smell was.

Great topic. For every deer you see hunting, 10 have smelled you and avoided you. I use scent control to bump the odds up a little. It’s important to try and fool more than one of the deer’s senses, not just their noses. Stealth and playing the wind kill a lot of deer each year.

I’d say it’s an educated guess. Back in the 80s we hunted in leather boots, used kerosene heaters, and thought Ivory bar soap kept out scent down. I saw deer skirt me down wind, and heard several blow out. I don’t know how we ever shot any deer back then. Now, I rarely get snorted, and commonly have deer in close range. Must be doing something right

The skunk is a good example. We can't stand being 5 feet from a skunk that has sprayed. Meanwhile we can tolerate a skunk that has sprayed 100 yards away. It's not important to eliminate your scent so much as hope that the deer doesn't think you are as close as you are, or to fool them.

Eberhart has accomplished what he has in Michigan. I doubt Dan could top him if he only hunted Michigan with his tactics. He would get busted more often. If the deer isn’t down wind You stand a better chance of not being smelled with scent products on at close range than you do with body spray on. I don’t believe scent products are supposed to kill a deers nose down wind. I’m sorry I’m just not convinced I can soak my self in axe body spray before I go in and kill a deer at 20 yards if it’s not down wind it just isn’t gonna happen on a clam day of course. Just think about everytime you’ve smelt a woman with spray on in the room regardless if she was down wind or not her spray stinks up the hole area?

I'm sure activated carbon makes a difference, there's a reason the technology is used in so many other industries. But just because it works for those applications doesn't mean deer can't smell you or that it absorbs all of your odor. Just because it works doesn't mean it works completely. Unless the suit was completely sealed at the cuffs, collar, and waistline there will ALWAYS be air and body odor escaping, even if that scent signature is reduced.
If you believe it helps, by all means use it. I wouldn't be surprised to learn it helps by some percentage... but the logic simply doesn't add up that it absorbs all human odor. That's just not how it works.

But what I imagine it can do is make a deer think you are further away than you really are. Your scent dissipate in the air and I can almost guarantee you that deer know how close you are compared to how strong your scent is. Why do you think deer go just out of shooting range at a known stand location? Part is cover, but guaranteed it’s also the smell as well.

I think scent control was more important years ago when people took 20 yrd shots. Now hunters take up to 50 yrd shots. The deer hasn't gotten close enough to smell you if he is up wind or even cross wind of the hunter.

A deers nose is better than a bloodhounds nose, you can use all the scent products in the world and you aint fooling a bloodhound....let alone a mature deer. The only scent control is wind direction.

I mean just use common sense … we don’t live in a perfect bubble. We come from the human world to the deers world . How do you no your not steeping in a gas or oil leak from the guys truck that leaks when your putting on your boots in the parking lot . I’ve tried the ( forget the wind just hunt ) and honestly it was hell and nothing but stress I wasn’t enjoying my self . It’s much easier when I see the milk weed go where I want to go . Enjoy be safe out there .

I’ve used the carbon suits for years and had great success. They have to get way closer to smell you and then they aren’t sure. My kill rate doubled

How do you feel about using carbon lines base layers

  • @williamrobinson4265

everything dan says is true and everything john says is true too
    1) there is no technoloy on the market that will fool a deer standing right next to you
    2) scentlok is very effective at mitigating scent in the field
especially if the wind is in your favor! lol
but really I think the point with a full body scentlok suit is that it keeps most of your scent trapped inside the suit and the gas exchange as it breathes gets slightly treated by the carbon, but probably the biggest benefit is just being a well engineered full body enclosure system
scentlok is a company so obviously their only goal is and should be to push their product and I think its claims are probably some of the least dishonest and gimmicky in the market people are just misunderstanding the claims and testing it out of context with unreasonable expectations but its awesome the mythbusters played with it now lets see some people testing it with wild deer in the field using the proper protocols and documentation

Dan is such a hater. Cutting down on your scent is never a bad thing.( for your mental or the deers nose)He hates on every stand he comes by in the woods, hates on people washing before hunting, hates on any tactic that he doesn’t use, hates on any product but his own...but say something about Mario using a crossbow and it’s “you should be happy he is out there hunting! We are supposed to be a community” it’s getting old...”i wAs MoBiLe bEfOre yOu”

Give me a break not that it matters because I hunt with a crossbow when I feel the urge and I’m perfectly healthy but Mario has a shoulder injury. You do you if a scent suit and some spray builds your confidence go for it. I never heard Dan busting anyones balls for the tactics they use. Who’s being a hater . Dan is not the only guy that has seen scientific studies that scent loc doesn’t work. Hell they even been sued for false advertising years ago because you couldn’t reactivate the carbon at the temp a clothes dryer gets. Dans just saying you don’t have to be rich to go deer hunting nobody has to drop 1000 bucks plus on scent loc suit to kill a whitetail when Wind and milkweed are free.

@@russelllangworthy8855 Darn close. At Bass Pro in Springfield, last year before inflation, just a top was a couple hundred bucks. Bottoms were similar. Then socks, boots, and balaclava, and you are looking at pretty close to 1000. Prices were similar at Academy and smaller local shops.
