Sometimes taking our Canal boat through locks is a NIGHTMARE! We previously get stuck in one, The next is so leaky it could have sunk our boat and Rob falls in the 3rd lock, all in one video.
Hi, we are Rozzie & Rob with our lovely cockapoo's Ralph & Rosie. We have given up the rat race, sold our house and have bought a new narrowboat, Thistle & Rose. Our vlogs are showing our learns as we go from bricks and mortar to life on the water. Join us as we literally learn the ropes of becoming continual cruisers on England's 2500 miles of canals & rivers.
Our vlogs are ideal if you have ever wondered what it's like to live on a narrowboat or are considering to make the leap and buy your very own narrowboat. There's always some humour, lots of mistakes and always a few drinks being poured. Subscribe to our channel, ask us a question or just watch our videos as there's something for everyone.

Such a lovely canal - we cruised to Chester many times. We moored at Anderton so it was a great cruise always. We moored before the lock just before The Old Oak and walked up to Beeston Castle. On the way down the most incredible storm broke and the only cover was a row of oak trees. Once it slowed we made a dash back to the boat. Having dried off and into dry clothes in less than half an hour I have a photo of my John sitting on the towpath cleaning our copper in brilliant sunshine and clear blue sky. You will really love the rest of the cruise to Chester ( our favourite city) Make sure to do the City Walls walk it is fantastic
Chester was great! And we loved the city walls.
What lovely memories you have ☺️
Thanks for watching
Very much enjoy all your videos. Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort that it takes to put all of it together.
Our pleasure! Thanks for your kind comment and for watching ☺️
Your like new age adventures ✨️ finding new and beautiful water ways keep up the great vlogs 😀
Thank you! Will do! Cheers for watching ☺️
We had a very similar instance on the Wigan flight in a 60 foot hire boat. Whoever went up the lock did not fully close the paddle so when we went down it sprayed out at the back of the lock onto our back cruiser stern. It took a while for our crew on the ground to work out what was going on by which time the engine bay was half full of water and the engine had cut out. We survived but to stay it didn’t scare the hell out of us is an understatement.
We loved the cruise from Chester to Ellesmere and the walk up to Beeston Castle. The canal museum is so worth the trip.
Wow that would have been really scary, the engine cutting out is what I would have been worried about had we been longer. Good to know it ended ok. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Love having this slightly early this week. You seem to have some good weather, too, plus luck with the moorings. It feels to me that something should be posted at that double lock to say dont fill the upper whilst someone and their boat is in the lower. Maybe a strong email to the canal people suggesting revised signage?
Anyway, lovely to see you both out and about. Rozzie is looking fit, and I love that she can work and get time to do the running and lock gates. Inspiration to all us lounge-bound hopeful canal goers.
Toodle pips!
Good idea we’ll do that 👍🏻. Glad you enjoyed the vlog, thanks for watching 😁
LOVE THE VODEOS R ASH BRISTOL

It’s a lovely section.
Thanks for watching ☺️
Not enough toodle-oos...lol. Thought the Shady Oak was closed. Wanted to camp their and they said the pub was shut
😂. It’s very much open and people camping there too, good pub and great beer and food! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
❤❤❤
Thanks ☺️
Fit Like. Thanks for your kind words. Life goes on as they say. Felt sorry for Rob with his three "events". That lock was certainly a tad scary. Like you said if you had been a longer boat it would have been serious. I've got myself back into rock tumbling and making bracelets so that keeps me off the streets. Take care both of you.
Lovely! Thanks for watching ☺️
Lovely scenery and oh those gorgeous goslings how cute are they. Sorry about your accidents Rob. Enjoyed the video.
It is beautiful! Thank you for watching ☺️
Hi, American here, why is the canal so muddy looking? Is it normal or have you had a lot of rain lately? Love seeing Ralph and Rosie and all the pubs!
Hello from across the pond! There’s a few reason, rain being in of them, they maybe full of silt stirred up by lots of passing boats but because it not a river the water is a bit more stagnant. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
What lovely surroundings on this section of the canal.
The lock situation was a bit worrying! Glad nothing bad happened! ❤
What a blissful life for your lovely dogs! New and exciting walks every day with their people.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ralph & Rosie are loving all the countryside walks. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

Sorry for all the downs of the one day Rob! But I'm a positive person too, so very pleased to hear your good humour. It really is lovely countryside you've been travelling through. Just love your vlogs! Thank you.
There’s always a bright side isn’t there, just got to look for it! Glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Are there fish in the canals? and generally, what is the depth of the water?
Yes there's lots of different fish and fishing is very popular. Generally they are about 4-5 feet in the centre. If you watch vlog 44 there's footage of someone stood up in the canal to give you an idea. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
How do you keep your cratch cover from fading? It looks like new.
It’s only 1 year old but I clean it with white vinegar to stop it going mouldy and then some soapy water. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Don’t understand why that jet of water would have sunk your boat! It’s a Aintree Boat with a flush deck so 99% of the water would have gone over the side.
We have to mop out the engine bay when it rains! 🤔😂
@@thenarrowboatgoodlifeI have a Aintree boat of a very similar age and style, the deck boards are on scuppers so if yours is leaking when it rains you have a serious problem with your boat.
Last year I was in a short lock so unable to escape a torrent of water on the stern deck and after about 2 min under the deluge I would say there was probably less than 1 gallon of water in the engine space bilge.
I have similar boat, bilge is bone dry, so long as I clean drain holes ( scuppers ). You should not have water in bilge. Assume you have a sealed stern gland , vetus type ? If so you must grease regularly ( every 50 hours ) with silicone grease to retain the water tight seal. If you have a conventional stern gland..,ignore me 😂
If it was a double lock, maybe the people who filled the top lock were a little upset you didn't let them join you going down. Maybe they thought you were wasting water going in on your own. Just a theory. But it is wrong to fill top lock while someone is in bottom lock, bad practice
We were already in the 2nd lock when they arrived so were about 10-15 minutes ahead of them, sometimes this happens. Plus they were a lovely couple who we went through the remainder locks. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
