your enthusiasm is contagious! My 15month old son and I were watching this before bed. Every time you smiled and talked to the camera he would clap and smile right back. Maybe he'll be a blacksmith some day!
thank you for brightening his day and mine!

Another awesome video! I can't wait to see how these hinges turn out. I love how you just go with the flow and figure things out as you progress. You're a very inspiring person and I have definitely learned a lot from your videos. After a couple years of machining and a whole lot more to come, I can definitely see myself getting a small shop setup and trying to learn how to blacksmith at home. It's very inspiring to see how much knowledge you have at your age. Im 24 and can confidently say I look up to you in the sense of being able to learn new things, try out different techniques and being optimistic. I look forward to more videos and learning as much as I can from them. keep up the outstanding work!

A good method for slow cooling is to put the hot metal into a container of plaster (just powder,no water added) ...this keeps the heat in and cools very slowly...I use this method for slow cooling my castings so they do not warp and maintain accuracy of fit. This will also let you have access to your forge while the pieces cool slowly..hope this helps.

yes it does, but he can't use his forge while it is off and slow cooling....this way he can slow cool and still use his forge.

Alec, another tip for milling. When you were milling the hinges to width with the face mill you had the cutter centred on the work piece. If you move it over so the cutter is at the edge of the work, you have a force component opposing the direction of feed and taking up any lash in the feed screw, giving a better finish and less vibration. Each tooth is also engaged in the cut for a longer time which reduces vibration.
    Great clips.

With the milling, we were taught to use a circular rod rather than something square on the movable side of the jaw as it prevents any lack of square throwing out the alignment of the rear jaw. You end up with a line of contact that won't affect alignment and compared to a face which you can't 100% guarantee is square

That's pretty crazy of you to drill the holes before skimming a pass of the bottom of the hinge. Doing that would ensure the holes are straight through - in line with the bottom. When you weave the hinges together would of been the best time to drill that pivot hole. It has not choice but to line up! That being said, I'm glad everything worked out despite of this! FANTASTIC!

Damascus is not much different to regular steel, you'd still have to contend with the scale that forging brings.. You could however, grind a thicker piece down with fine abrasives but even still you'd only be able to bring it down to 0.1mm or so.. A bit thick for foil and a nightmare to secure it when grinding..
I suppose you could also cold roll it but Alec doesn't have that type of equipment afaik
