Think about this: When these 40+ ton earth movers were first produced back in the 1950s they had manual transmissions with non-syncro clutches, no power steering, full on or off air brakes, the seat in the operators cab was barely padded on a hard steel frame, no heat or air conditioning in the cab, and no sound insulation. The guys who ran these for 8-12 hours straight every day back then were tough as nails.

The simulator is 100% harder than actually hands-on driving those trucks. It's almost as if they are programmed for you to fail it.

I learned on an actual 797 while sitting in the driver's seat and backing up to an oilsands electric shovel. No stupid assinine simulator.

I've worked every oilsands site except Syncrude with Clean Harbors. I will be forever be indebted to the Oilsands for the safe professional training, decent money and brilliant Moral. 5 years dealing with Toronto and I had to leave Canada.
God bless all the people in the Oilsands. And thank you.

No need for horn blasts while out in the active mine area. For example backing under the digger. No need for horn blasts.

Same thing as being Captain on small passenger ferry under 250 tons. The load is always changing. The wind, Water currents. Can't see in fog. You have to have a feel for the changes. There are no brake on a ferry. I'm sure I could drop right in and operate one of these haul trucks. :)

he tells him not to brake and then tells him to stop after he hits the truck and says 'see what happened there'? Yeah you told me NOT to brake. poor instruction really. I bet old mate forgot this happens in the run but made it look like it wasn't his fault

The mining company would still prefer you pull the automatic CO2 engine compartment fire suppression system handle as you exit the front stairway. Saves on extra work by the steam blasters and mechanics back at the shop.
