Driver has suffered a hell of a lot in comparison to Grand Theft Auto. It just hasn't received the critical acclaim that it deserves. Admittedly, Driver 2 was released too close to GTA 3, Driv3r was outshone by GTA Vice City, and the latter Driver games were merely playing catch-up. But what you cannot escape is the awesome 70's movie feeling of the first Driver game. The game and soundtrack were way ahead of their time, and they helped to shape the modern Grand Theft Auto series and what game soundtracks are today. Driver was a driving force. I hope nobody forgets this.

Driver 2 came out a full year before GTA III - and on the PS1, it had critical acclaim and sold well, but the hardware of the PS1 simply wasn't capable of rendering a free roam game that well where you could drive around a city and get out of your car, walk around, get into other cars, etc. With about 15 years of hindsight it should've been a PS2 game, maybe a launch title, with gameplay more like DRIV3R.

To me If I had this game again I could play it any day of the week. It is the most underrated game in the most underrated series of games of all time in my opinion.
Unfortunately I don't think that will happen, since Ubisoft owns the IP and it seems they're mostly focused on Tom Clancy. Don't get me wrong I would love to see a remake of the trilogy but at least currently it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon. I could be wrong in the future but I'm hoping I'm wrong

I was playing Driver: San Francisco... And the theme song there had a familiar style to it... I was damn near brought to tears when I realised that these two songs share a similar style. I love it!
This title music brings you to the 1970s classic cop movies and TV shows all the way. You can definitely tell where the inspiration was at when developing this game.
Back then the soundtracks for games was awesome and make you want to listen to it all the time. Most modern games don't really have that anymore :(. I still have this game for the PC :).
Just completed my second playthrough. First was on PC and the second on PS1. Just reminded me how ridicolous the last mission is. Slippery controls, both police and gangsters can hit you with insane acceleration if you don´t dodge them.
Such a crazy awesome theme, childhood theme, ah how I would play this game as a kid, trying to flip cars on their sides. Hit the suspension, send them literally FLYING or hit the top of the car, I MYSELF goes flying! Ah I remember being able to cheat Survival by doing this trick, ramming the top of a car, flying myself up to a building... which really you weren't up there... lmao. Damn I'm so old now.

I've always loved the Driver 1 Theme. Not only was/is it a fun game to play, it had such an awesome theme song. So awesome in my opinion that I used the very end of it in my channel intro video. I think it goes very well with the footage.
I still listen to this in the car and it makes me feel like I'm back in the first game. If they ever remake this game and don't use this theme, I will be so disappointed lol

For some reason, I preferred the PC version of this game to the PS1 version. The graphics on the PC were superb, but there was also a driving mode called "carnage" where you could smash into as many vehicles as possible and cause damage for a limited amount of time. You could send cars into orbit too (if you struck them hard enough) lol.

Fucking *phe-no-menal.* Played it, since my early 2000's childhood on my PS2 and ever since on emulator, using my original disc. Hella' fun, a good challenge, a likeable main character and the implemination of 70's car chase movie aspects was ahead of it's time. I sometimes yell "You piece o' shit!" at my screen, when the enemy ai or car physics does it's usual whacky stuff again, that instantly loses me the mission, but I always have a good time none the less. The visuals, the OST, the silent lonewolf protagonist. Love it all.
I want those days back!! miss my childhood man.... and damn! you can't drive and smash a car for real like that, one scratch equals "you've wrecked your car" :/
It annoys me when the Driver series is compared to GTA, this first game never set out to be a GTA clone, and the ability to get out of the car and walk around/steal other cars etc just seemed like a natural progression from the first game rather than an attempt to emulate GTA. Agree wholeheartedly that they should have developed DII for the PS2. A missed opportunity almost. DII was just too ambitious to be a PS1 title.
