Imagine David Bowie sitting there on Earth and seeing this for the first time. He apparently loved it and called it one of the most poignant versions of his song. Must have been a bizarre feeling seeing a real-life astronaut, orbiting Earth singing your own lyrics you'd written decades earlier about sitting in a tin can and seeing the blue Earth below.
This video is so affecting for so many reasons. Whenever I watch it, I feel more alive; all the small worries seem to vanish because I feel I'm part of a larger world.
@@whitelinentrousers That's so true. 👍 It just leaves me speechless. And I'm almost hearing it as Bowie would be hearing the realization of his own classic song... I can't imagine the poignancy.
I love that with the load restrictions (weight and cost) on what could be sent up to space, a guitar was allowed, which then gave us this one-of-a-kind music video.
This is The Video that inspired me to learn again, to do science. And although I've surrendered my dreams about the space and gone to the palaeontology, it doesn't change my gratitude to you. As well as Bowie, of course. I wander if you ever read this (the chance is low, I guess), but in case of this - thank you for this act of creativity which was (and is) so important to me!
There's that book in which you watched Niel Armstrong set foot on the moon when you were little, and dreamed of space, “The Darkest Dark”. Well today, you're that astronaut who makes my little man dream. Great job and thank you!
The most epic video of the human history. Colonel, you have inspired a whole generation. You've made space exploration (and science, in general) interesting and fun, even for those who are not space fans. Thank you so much.

Bowie fought his label to get it back online. It's sad because now it only has "90k" views, wheres the original had millions. Now random yt channels have more views than the original.
@Bogeyatyour6YT ay that's the bs you get with evil record labels and TH-cams awful copyright system. Thank god for the good people, at least we can still watch it
Y'know, TH-cam's algorithm is kinda iffy. But, man, do they recommend some amazing videos from time to time. This is definitely on the latter side. Mr Bowie would be proud! I've always imagined that if an astronaut were in space, "Starman", "Space Oddity" or "Moonage Daydream" would be playing in the background to add some levity to the situation.
Probably the best Music Video ever made until the next astronaut lands on moon and sings “Fly Me to The Moon” with a new music video made in the Moon Base. BTW, I bought the song for a long time, still love it.
My Grade 1 music teach always showed us videos of Chris Hadfield, and ever since then he's always been one of my most favorite people in the world. She also made us learn O' Canada in French so that's a neat skill I guess.
I'm watching this video because I bought my kids a book about space, and on one page, it explains that the universe is silent, but an astronaut recorded a clip inside the space station. And here it is! 😍
Just watched this again. Love it. Is there a word better than epic? I'm still surprised only 3k views and 130 comments in 4 years. Tells us all we need to know about our earth bound brothers and sisters. They cannot look up as they are so busy scraping a living.
He is my hero my inspiration to go to space I am 14 and I am the best of my class in math and English I live in Germany I will study mostly math and graduate from a good university at math or engineering and will try to go to space
Humans do wars, yes, but also this, esthatic beauty, moving everyone else's feelings and combined with the images of the video, i swear i never saw anything more beautiful, you can fulfill yourself with beautiful landscapes all around the world, but the view you get from up there... should be the experience of a lifetime and at the same time the very meaning of life for a human being, the highest conquests we have ever made, in technology, to conquer space
Good job! You really left the pounce to catch the guitar before it impacted until the last second. Obviously you guys get very good at judging that stuff. :-) I kinda gotta wonder about the guy who put that sealant on the viewing window, though, unless that was done in space. In the first case (if done on Earth), he should have been smacked up side the head. If it was done in space, he should be congratulated wholeheartedly. I don't think that window has ever been replaced (it cost a buck or two) since it was installed, but it would surprise me if it was. I wouldn't trust that damned Soyuz to take me to the grocery store, if you put it in the back of a pickup. You guys have balls, I'll give you that! I wonder if Bowie has seen this. I'll bet he got a real kick out of it if he did.
He did. This was originally posted quite a few years ago. Bowie stated before his death this was his favourite of all covers of his songs. When it first dropped, an exec from Bowies label tried to have it removed. Bowie flipped out on the guy, and thus, the video remained.

Yes because space is real and these people aren't just green screening it! These people have done a great job brainwashing the masses.
very expensive guitar XD
guitar is the most sensible charge. apart from oxygen.
Space Oddity actually played in space as it was meant to be

Good, but no.
That's what David Bowie said!
No way, very amateur, but talented, not a patch on Bowie's version.
@@kevinbarnbrook4728 BTW Bowie says the same...
Best version. That's how it should be sung.
So, is this technically the most expensive music video ever made?
Yes. It cost billions, decades and a lot of dead Astronauts.
not really technically. Getting him into space is another story
