Been a cool and wet spring. I always start my 1st crop of potatoes in last of January. I wait a month and plant 2nd crop in March. Due to cool weather it's first year for 3rd planting in mid April. I've pulled 1st and 2nd crop already and gave away several 5gal buckets of potatoes to neighbors and elderly family.
Agreed central Texas is experiencing weather that is not normal. We usually get hot by the last week of February..... it's still cool and we are in mid may. My sugar pumpkins are simply loving it! Praise God our pumpkin harvest has exploded!!!
Hello from TN! Here it is 5:40 in the morning and you have my mouth Watering for taters! I think that I could eat a plate of just potatoes, fixed in different ways! I've been a tater baby ever since I can remember. I used to eat them raw! You were blessed this year! We have clay soil here. Over the years we've worked to improve our soil. When the road department cleared trees from the sides of the road near our house, we had them bring the "chipped" up limbs and such to our place. We have a special place to put them. We let them break down for years. Then add that to the gardens. We compost leaves too. We live on a dirt road so it's not bad. It takes work to get the soil good. We cover crop in the spring and fall. We grow pretty good potatoes on our place. I like the looks of those fingerling potatoes. We may have to try them. We enjoy your videos and appreciate your gardening wisdom. I had not noticed the little white nubs on the potatoes. If I see them now, I'll know what they signify! Those sorts of tidbits of wisdom are what keeps me listening to your channel! I believe that it's important to keep learning! I've probably been in the garden since I was born! Our Mother always had use working in the garden. I'll be 70 soon, but I learned something today! Thank you and GOD bless
I remember eating potatoes raw as well, we would hold the potato in one hand and would hold the salt shaker in the other. I remember doing it until someone told me I could get worms in my stomach so I stopped. Lol! I can’t believe how hard and cement like the soil was in between the rows! I never remember ever seeing soil like that before. No wonder they could never grow anything in that solid clay soil. 🙏🏻🥰🇨🇦

Good Morning! What an awesome harvest! Thank you for sharing. About the True Potato Seed......Do NOT eat. Break open, it will have small seeds inside that look like tomato seeds. Clean them and if you want to plant, soak them in water for a few days before planting. They will take longer to grow of course.
I found some of those while cleaning the garden beds in Feb, but the chickens ate them while they were cleaning the garden too. I sure will save them next time!! LOL
I'm on day 2 with the shoes u did a review on and like u I love them like I said I've had 2 strokes and my balance isn't the best I really put them to the test yesterday 10 miles and I never took a nose dive and I've did that a bunch once I get used to the extra weight of the shoes because there put together so good like u say there fantastic thanks do a video some day caught clean and cook fish fry yum

I have potato(and apple)scab in my soils. I could treat the soil but I try to do organic. I only plant potatoes in 4 and 5 gallon buckets and my grandkiddos love ❤ love bucket dumping day lol. Its like finding buried treasures for them. Last year we had one bucket that had one small plant. I figured we might get maybe one or 2 potatoes if lucky That bucket had 4 potatoes but one of them weighed in at 2 pounds! It almost filled the bucket! Lol. The other three were ping pong ball sized. Just an old red potato that sprout from the store so no idea the name. I love the little potatoes tho I bought a bag of red/yellow mini potato a few years back that sprouted. We've been growing them from that bag ever since.
I am growing potatoes in 30 gallon storage totes on top of cinder blocks. It's always wet around New Orleans, but this year is crazy. Expecting up to 10 inches of rain by this weekend!
@@DragonPrepper oh be safe! In my part of Michigan its borderline drought. Ive usually got problems getting the garden worked and planted between rain storms this year we had to pull the hoses out early. But its helped with the building of my greenhouses. I'm an always a silver lining gal lol.
Listening to this while I'm working. It's bringing up memories of Pawpaw in his TuffNut overalls, him plowing up the potato patch with the mules, and all of us kids picking up potatoes - enough for us, the preacher's family, and the family of the "widder woman" down the road.

I took my french fingerlings from last year's harvest that started growing and planted them in our greenhouse this winter. I've been harvesting them for last couple of days. They're huge and so beautiful. No blemishes at all. I think that's going to be one of my go to ways to plant them.

You have a much bigger operation than I do, but I've moved over to growing potatoes in large buckets. It gives me much more control and the harvest is as easy as dumping the bucket into a wheel barrow. I grow more than enough potatoes for our needs now. Also, for storage, do you dehydrate? I'm loving dehydrating as a storage solution more and more. I also freeze some.

I'm in my second year of gardening and trying to remember all that I learned and saw from my great-grandmother's (Big Mama) garden growing up, and following Mother Nature's Phases of the Moon 🌙🌚🌕🌓 and the Old Farmers Almanac to know when to plant your above ground and below ground crops to receive a better harvest. Same here I did get my German butterballs in about 2 weeks ago but I just got my buckets ready for my little taters(you know the ones from the store lol ) we love baby potatoes here and this will be year 4 of planting them out. Only the all blue fingerlings didn't do well. Something chews holes in them. The little divots heal over but they just don't thrive for me. I will be looking into these French fingerling for next year as all my buckets are filled(or about to be lol).
Danny we cut a forked limb off a tree. I made me a planting stick for my sweet potatoe slips. I worked really great. I have planted three kinds of potatoes in containers, raised beds and husband piled compost in four rows in the woods. Some of the plants are 27" tall. It is a test to see if they will make anything. Fertilized with 12 12 12 once, Red Norland potatoes. Sweet potatoes are planted in a raised bed.
You are blessed! I'm doing some container potatoes this year. I just don't have the space to plant them any other way. I tried them last year as a afterthought and got a decent little harvest of small red potatoes like you pay a fortune for in the stores. Bite size. Great in potatoes, green beans, ham and onions! Our favorite summer and fall meal with corn bread. Wanda, looks like you're going to be doing a lot of canning!
I would imagine Danny and Wanda could turn a sows ear into a silk purse if need be. Quality seed means nothing without being great gardeners. Hoss tools is as well a great seed source.
Enjoyed the video. About the seed balls…many years ago the famous plant breeder Luther Burbank took the seed balls and planted them and most didn’t do much but one made a beautiful potato. It became the Burbank Russet. One of the most famous baking potatoes of all time. Plant them just to see what happens.
I wanted the French fingerlins but the were out of stock-I got a 4 pack variety-this was my first time planting potatoes-wish me luck! I’ve been worried about them cause we had so much rain last couple weeks-hot and sunny this week so hopefully it dries out soon enough! I noticed the brown spots on some of mine today too. Absolutely awesome potatoe harvest. Where I live is a mix of sandy loam and clay. In a season on new or tired ground I can get 2 buckwheat crops in and then winter rye......adds nitrogen and really helps keep the soil loose. I also have a fairly large supply of leaves every fall. Having a tiller like yours makes chopping the leaves and green manures in a breeze. Both of the green manures I use is really cheap to purchase the seeds. When I plant potatoes I bed underneath and on top with leaves then cover with dirt. Helps retain moisture and keeps the dirt loose around them. I plant red norlands because they mature so quickly for summer use. Red Pontiac and green mountain are some favorite's for fall crops.

I've been reading books on no till Regenerative agriculture. You should read a book called Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown. Very interesting. It would help on your flooding, stopping soil erosion, soil health and water retention. Thanks Danny and Wanda.
I’m grateful to have any soil right now to grow food! These are crazy times were living in. Everybody should do some thing regardless of what kind of soil they have.
Great potato harvest; enjoyed watching the video! We had some seed pods on a few of our Yukon Gold potato plants. I’m sure you’ve researched this by now, but I read last week that this happens when the weather is unusually cold and wet. The flower stays on the plant longer, so it produces the fruit. The article I read said you shouldn’t plant the seed because it will take many years to grow a potato of any size. Plant growers snd breeders use these seed to develop new varieties. Don’t eat the seed! It contains a huge amount of solanine which is poisonous and can cause major digestive issues. I found this out after cutting one up to taste. Thankfully, it tasted bad, so I didn’t swallow it!
I have had potato berries form as some call them. Aside from planting clones they are the only way for new varieties to develop. They remind me of a Garden huckleberry, or Tomatillo.
Triple 13 mine last weekend with some pot ash. Hilled them high to almost bury them. Walked them past night and boom 💥 they need hilled again they have grown so much. Cant wait to dig them. Yup 👍 fertilize them. Get prepared. From southeast Arkansas

I got fingerlings from Hoss Tool. Mine are planted in containers and also the Greenstalk. But here in Indiana they were planted about three weeks ago. So will be sometime before I can report this mine did.
Wow what a harvest and so early in the season! I've never seen fingerling potatoes so big before. Whatever is in your pond soil Danny keep using it. Never seen potato seeds that look like little baby tomatoes either. I'm curious to see what you will do with them.
What a blessing that harvest was to you, and your video was to me! I had no idea you weren’t supposed to compost the potato tops and I also had no idea there were determinate and indeterminate potatoes. We also get those berries in the PNW and I had no idea you could do anything with them I always heard they were poisonous and to just throw them out. I have much to still learn.
Potato seeds are in each green pod, let them dry extract the seeds from inside and plant the seeds, you won't know what kind of potatoes you will get, it's always a surprise
Wow that so strange I’ve never ever heard of potatoes growing seeds like that before! I know it definitely makes sense but I always thought you planted leftover potatoes that were left from the previous year that grew eyes in them and you cut them so there are at least two eyes on each piece and plant it and they would grow potatoes. It makes sense though that potatoes had seeds at one point in time but I had no clue about them! Just goes to show you can learn something new everyday no matter how old you are! Congratulations on an incredible harvest, Danny for your age you amaze me at how flexible you are and how you can bend down like that or sit on your knees on that hard dirt!! My body would be screaming for mercy! Just another example how gardening can be good for your health if you do it all your life eh? Seeing the potatoes spread out on the floor like that really put into perspective just how many potatoes you actually harvested!! It’s unreal seeing them and that really you grew enough for the two of you to eat off of them for the next year. When we buy 10lb bags although I think now they are only 5lb bags and we pay the same as we did for double the amount, we don’t realize just how many potatoes a couple would eat in one year. But I’m Sure that will likely just be enough for the two of you for the upcoming year. 🙏🏻🥰🇨🇦

I believe there is a bunch of little seeds in each pod. I think you cut them and get lose in water.

Having a tiller like yours makes chopping the leaves and green manures in a breeze. Both of the green manures I use is really cheap to purchase the seeds. When I plant potatoes I bed underneath and on top with leaves then cover with dirt. Helps retain moisture and keeps the dirt loose around them. I plant red norlands because they mature so quickly for summer use. Red Pontiac and green mountain are some favorite's for fall crops.

you have to cut the berry open and push the pulp and seeds out let them sit for a few day in water like you would saving tomato seeds
I think if you take pond dirt and water will supply what they need. Specially in sand soil

I've been reading books on no till Regenerative agriculture. You should read a book called Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown. Very interesting. It would help on your flooding, stopping soil erosion, soil health and water retention. Thanks Danny and Wanda.

I’m grateful to have any soil right now to grow food! These are crazy times were living in. Everybody should do some thing regardless of what kind of soil they have.
Great potato harvest; enjoyed watching the video! We had some seed pods on a few of our Yukon Gold potato plants. I’m sure you’ve researched this by now, but I read last week that this happens when the weather is unusually cold and wet. The flower stays on the plant longer, so it produces the fruit. The article I read said you shouldn’t plant the seed because it will take many years to grow a potato of any size. Plant growers snd breeders use these seed to develop new varieties. Don’t eat the seed! It contains a huge amount of solanine which is poisonous and can cause major digestive issues. I found this out after cutting one up to taste. Thankfully, it tasted bad, so I didn’t swallow it!

I have had potato berries form as some call them. Aside from planting clones they are the only way for new varieties to develop. They remind me of a Garden huckleberry, or Tomatillo.

Triple 13 mine last weekend with some pot ash. Hilled them high to almost bury them. Walked them past night and boom 💥 they need hilled again they have grown so much. Cant wait to dig them. Yup 👍 fertilize them. Get prepared. From southeast Arkansas

I got fingerlings from Hoss Tool. Mine are planted in containers and also the Greenstalk. But here in Indiana they were planted about three weeks ago. So will be sometime before I can report this mine did.

Wow what a harvest and so early in the season! I've never seen fingerling potatoes so big before. Whatever is in your pond soil Danny keep using it. Never seen potato seeds that look like little baby tomatoes either. I'm curious to see what you will do with them.
What a blessing that harvest was to you, and your video was to me! I had no idea you weren’t supposed to compost the potato tops and I also had no idea there were determinate and indeterminate potatoes. We also get those berries in the PNW and I had no idea you could do anything with them I always heard they were poisonous and to just throw them out. I have much to still learn.

Our youkon golds are huge the plants are huge and lush green. When we get done with plants we compost it or feed it to goats 🐐 😁
We never do in the south they are full of disease from the heat and humidity.

Potato seeds are in each green pod, let them dry extract the seeds from inside and plant the seeds, you won't know what kind of potatoes you will get, it's always a surprise
Wow that so strange I’ve never ever heard of potatoes growing seeds like that before! I know it definitely makes sense but I always thought you planted leftover potatoes that were left from the previous year that grew eyes in them and you cut them so there are at least two eyes on each piece and plant it and they would grow potatoes. It makes sense though that potatoes had seeds at one point in time but I had no clue about them! Just goes to show you can learn something new everyday no matter how old you are!
Congratulations on an incredible harvest, Danny for your age you amaze me at how flexible you are and how you can bend down like that or sit on your knees on that hard dirt!! My body would be screaming for mercy! Just another example how gardening can be good for your health if you do it all your life eh?
Seeing the potatoes spread out on the floor like that really put into perspective just how many potatoes you actually harvested!! It’s unreal seeing them and that really you grew enough for the two of you to eat off of them for the next year. When we buy 10lb bags although I think now they are only 5lb bags and we pay the same as we did for double the amount, we don’t realize just how many potatoes a couple would eat in one year. But I’m
