  • Hay was one of our biggest obstacles on our homestead. We don't have enough land to grow our own hay. We found an AWESOME deal of first cutting of HAY. Great price and HERBICIDE FREE! We bought 60 bales that should last us a year.

I am so glad the good Lord gave you the desires of your heart. I know you have been worried about finding clean hay. The Lord gave me the desire of my heart this past weekend. I have been wanting a kitchenaid mixer for years and years. My cousin just said out of the blue would you like to have my kitchenaid. I never use it and it just takes up my counter space. She had know idea I have been wanting one. Not only did she give me the kitchenaid but she had every possible attachment! God is so good!

That's awesome! I also found a source of local untreated bales yesterday. In fact when I asked the farmer if it was treated he snorted "with WHAT???" And I said oh , you know like Grazon or anything like that to kill the weeds. I think he thought I wanted that. He said heck no we just cut it and bale it. I said I will be there in 15 minutes. He charged a PRE LCE price...same as bales were going for last year. When the feed stores and big box stores are selling half sized bales that are "Clean" aka treated, for almost $20 a bale. Such a blessing.

Danny, i stored 45 bails of hay in a 20 ft shipping container over a few years. The amazing thing it stayed as was when i bought it and was perfect. I was amazed. You can get 40 footers. Lock down n water proof.

We tried the bale sleeves years ago. The tops and most of the bales stay dry and well preserved, but the solid plastic @ the bottom holds water that enters from the flat sides. There was less waste when we put them on pallets and poked holes in the bottom of sleeves to let moisture out. Nice looking hay bales weeds and all.

  • @Emeraldwitch30
    @Emeraldwitch30 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I see another farm project coming. Hay barn. Then you'd only need the cover the bales on the outer edges. (Well the designs I saw around here are basically just roofs lol).
I sure hope this works out for you.
Another thing they do is make these long trenches. Its like two parallel walls they stack all the bales in between these walls and then cover with giant plastic tarps that are held down with tires.
They do the same with chopped silage too.

  • @jdp6ofus

We put our hay up on pallets because there's so much moisture in the ground and to help when it rains so much here in AL. I saw a guy set his bales on logs and pallets and then take a log or 4x4 and lay on top of his bales for air circulation and then use pieces of billboard vinyl and light colored tarps draped over his bales and held down with rocks and logs. He left the ends open like yours and spaced apart a foot or two. We've tried that and it seems to work for us smaller homesteaders who don't have hay storage barns. We get some heavy wind, so I have to check after storms and sometimes recover them. But what I really like & we found works well are those 10x20 canopy carports that you can get for around a $100 of you look. We use pallets on the ground and those carports (from harbor freight or online stores) with the legs tied to 7' tall tposts as a type of mini pole barn for hay storage. The tops sweat, so you have to lay a tarp on top the hay and weight it down so the wind doesn't take it. They last 2 seasons and I can get 10-12 round bales under them with about 50-70 squares spread and stacked on top of the rounds. When the tarp top wears out, we just put a new tarp (think it's a 20x20 or larger, bought when we watch sales) on top of the old carport canopy tarp and tie it down to the tposts. After a couple layers, the sweat doesn't make it through to drip on the hay. You can criss-cross ropes over the top and tie to the tposts like they do over high tunnels for added wind protection. Ours regularly holds up to 60+ mile an hour winds and through 2 tornadoes that went by 1/4 mile from us. Hope that helps you with some ideas for hay storage.

  • @turntupturnip352

You could always just lay the plastic over the top and fix three strings . One to corners of each side and one on the middle. Cross the two on the corners under the bottom and tie to other corners and then the one in the middle. For the anchor for the string wrap a rock it the plastic where you tie the three strings. Might save you some time and also allow water to not pool in the bottom of the plastic with the open bottoms

Wonderful!! Such a blessing!! I always loved seeing my Dad pull up to my barn with his truck and trailer loaded with hay, followed by however many more people with trucks and or trailers he could get to go with him to get hay. It was always a very early day followed by a long hot day of filling the barn. We live in West Texas and he would go to somewhere in Central Texas to buy a years worth of hay for me. He would leave late Friday night and be back early Sunday morning. I had better be out of bed and waiting at the barn when he pulled up. I miss those days and my Dad.

Your cattle KNOW your voice, and to them you are the source of GOOD THINGS. Fun to watch them come running! Providence favors the prepared. By living frugally and saving, you had the funds available to buy the good hay at the good price. So many people squander their resources on nickel and dime “I want it RIGHT NOW” stuff and pleasures that when opportunity comes by they have no way to take advantage of it. No, I DON’T feel sorry for them. Choices ALWAYS HAVE CONSEQUENCES, and too many people have chosen not to put by against hard times or live within their means. Examples from individuals to nations have demonstrated the consequences of choices throughout history and around the world. HE has trusted y’all with a little and y’all have made it prosper; to them who prove themselves with the little, He will entrust much. Thank y’all for demonstrating the lessons and showing how y’all have achieved the fruits of your labors.
By the way, since y’all showed that the watermelons are doing puny, would it be possible to start a few in a warm spot in the Queen dome? Maybe not raise them there but at least give them a good start before y’all plant them out? Just a thought...

The animals love the red crimson clover. This is a win win situation, the crimson seeds from this hay will be put back in the fields naturally.

I like those bags. Even if the ends get weathered, interior should be well protected, which is the goal. We stack 24-26 end to end with a row on top under a hay tarp. That said, it's short term. Those bales are used up within a month or six weeks. Would really be interested in an updated later on how those wraps are working.

Throw some logs under your bales first chance you get to get it off the ground a bit!👍

Hey Danny I used to work in a steel Warehouse and they used to run a lot of tubing they would run way more than they needed kind of like you're talking with the hay the problem with the steel tubing was after a while these people we weren't shipping them it started getting lightly Rusty and they always want to ship the oldest out first so the problem is you're never getting a new product to the people if you have an over abundance of a product if you buy too much hay and then what you have is not quite as good the extra now you're going to wind up getting more hay which hay do you feed them it's just a thought.

Dexter's are not picky they will eat the older hay. I put a new roll in every so often to them just to balance it out.

Idk...But it looks like wrapping it might cause the hay to get moldy, all of our humidity down here might get trapped in the wrap... Definitely enlightened me if I'm wrong... If it works I'd like to do it...
