He really was genius. This wasn't some fluke character that just happened to be popular because it struck a cord with 90s kids. This was raw talent, talent that saved Family Matters from being a forgotten failed sitcom from back in the day, and he turned it into a classic. He also gave fuel to the other characters who were under utilized, all of whom reacted extremely well with him on screen.
+alex kanyima actually Steve was in the first season, he just didn't have many episodes because he wasn't a main character. If we didn't see him the show would've been like bill cosby meets full house. And it would've been boring.
anton riley-burton i doubt it of bill cosby meets full house, the cosby show was way popular then full house at the time, Steve made season 2 significant because of him
@Alfredo Sauce Last week I was watching an interview with the cast of the show and Jaleel was talking about Urkel's iconic catchphrase, he told back then only a few of them were successful and "I've fallen and I can't get up" was one of them (which they took from a Life Call commercial, originally - th-cam.com/video/bQlpDiXPZHQ/w-d-xo.html this one) and they decided to use on Family Matters
Rewatching the series on Hulu (they have all the seasons). Steve Urkel will always be funny and cute, but this scene really squashes my grapes. He has enough problems being the school weirdo and the butt of everyone's jokes, and these two awful characters liquor him up and make him the freaking laughingstock of the party. My heart always broke for him here.
I wouldn't say Waldo was a bad person. He thought Willie Fuffner was his friend but would often be ridiculed by him as well due to his lack of intelligence. But after seeing Willie almost killing Urkel do to his hatred of him, he left Willie alone and became friends with both Steve and Eddie.
I remember watching this episode when it was syndicated on TBS, back in the summer of 1994 or 95. We were at my grandparents' old cottage and yes they had cable up there haha. So every time I watch this, I am reminded of that old cottage. All I remember is when Steve slipped and fell and they were all watching him from the top of the roof.
RT Carl cares for Steve, Steve just pushes his button. Harriet accepted Steve, Estelle loved him so did Richie and Rachel. Eddie liked Steve but hides it because a popular guy like Eddie being friends with an unpopular nerd like Steve people would make fun of him especially Rodney. Laura liked Steve too but he just wasn’t her taste that time. She did appreciate him as a friend Laura would be friends with anybody. When Steve became more mature that’s when the loved him but that time she just appreciated him as a friend. Maxine liked Steve because of their similar situations with neglect parents(even though she barely spoke to him). Waldo liked Steve too so did, Loony Bin,Captain Savage, Lt Murtaugh, Vonda Mahoney loves Steve in the episode The Love God, Myra loved Steve, the girl in the episode Requiem For An Urkel when she helped Urkel from falling over cared for him she also appeared in Fight The Good Fight, everyone in Life Of The Party liked him, Greg from The Science Project and Requiem For An Urkel liked Steve too, Everyone in My Uncle The Hero liked Steve also in Requiem For An Urkel, also Casey liked Steve. That's pitiful honestly. Willie spiked his drink all because he proved Laura's point: you don't have to drink to have a good time, and he was the only guy at the party with enough guts to break the ice. And the one time Steve gets genuine admiration by his peers for being himself, Willie ruins it and makes him the butt of the joke again. Sad. Truly sad. Just shows how insecure Willie is
Given Steve a spiked drink Fuffner?! Where's his mittens to teach you a lesson (if you've never seen the episode Steve slaps Fuffner with his mitten you'll laugh until you pee)
Thank God Rachel was there, to rescue Steve, Rachel saved his life while she was tightrope walking on the tightrope from the building after Steve falls off on top of the building from the rooftop party of him being drunk after drinking a spike punch, Same thing with Carl Winslow he rescues Steve Urkel with a teleport machine from that hoodlum criminal dude after falling from the eiffel tower Life of the Party & 🌃🎉 Paris Vacation 3🗼

Most of them.

Jaleel (Urkel) saved this show. It would been cancelled after a season or 2 without him.

I like how Steve hangs on when he falls off the top of the building. He was very lucky.
I feel like in real life it would be impossible to catch and hold onto a building if you fell like he did.
Steve Urkel was the first character on the show to get drunk. Then it was Eddie and finally Laura.
In Steve's defense, his punch was spiked.
