Hi Mike, I also have the same exact motor. In 2012 both of my tilt & trim relays stopped working. I took both relays out, and shot a lot of WD-40 into the relays. WD-40 started to overflow from within the relays, so I knew it was time to stop adding WD-40. Today is 11/11/18 and those same two relays have been working since I shot WD-40 in them six years ago. If you ever have any problems with your relays, which was my problem, simply spray your relays with WD-40 and they’ll work like new. Great videos sir!!!
I have a 1996 Force. My local guy has lots of experience on Force motors. I jsut took it in and paid him for 5 hours of time on the motor. Everything has been adjusted, cleaned and replaced. Thing runs like a top now. I’m going to keep an eye on your channel for content.
I have a 1998 version of this outboard and it's a love hate relationship. I love it because it just runs and runs and runs without a problem. I just had it out last weekend in fact and it ran perfectly. The hate part of the relationship is the engine is underpowered compared to other 40hp outboards. I actually think it's more like a 30-35hp at best. I really can't complain because it's been used in salt water it's entire life and still runs and looks great. I am going to install the water telltale on mine, I saw the brass plug on the top of the engine on mine, so it's a 10 minute install.
Mine felt underpowered as well. Till i took the hood off and manually pushed down on the throttle. Culprit was worn out towershaft bearings. I was only getting maybe 3/4 throttle if that. Needless to say it pushed my 17 foot allwelded aluminum duracraft 36mph(gps calculated on phone and humminbird gps) upriver with me and my brother in it. Were both big guys. Id say about 650 pounds combined between me and him. Plus 3 deep cycle batteries.
The thing with this engine is that it is used on a 30hp 40hp and a 50hp mercury engines, all you got to do is to manually open the throttle valve and you have a 50hp outboard engine. Downside is the increased fuel consumption. You can find tutorials on how to do it yourself on youtube.
Got one and it quit after one tank of gas. Replacing the fuel lines and filter tomorrow along with the plugs . Will l maybe get up with you if. no luck. Great video!
Force outboards are the old Chrysler Marine Division that was then eventually bought by Mercury Marine... The early word was they were down on power compared to the other Big 4 outboards because the Force outboards were HP rated at the power head and not at the prop shaft as the Mercury & OMC outboards were.
I have exactly the same motor and the carburetor has to be rebuilt. I called our local marine shop and they will not work on them anymore so I am having to rebuild it myself. I have never done it before and I am having a hard time finding a carb kit for it. I finally found one for $140. Seems way to high. I wish to goodness you had video of the carb rebuild.
Hello, Mike, just picked up a 1997 Pro17 Bass Tracker a few hours ago. I put some good quality ear muffs on it and ran the motor... Sound OK so far. Just to let you know, mine has Water coming out at the bottom in a good stream on both sides, and out of that REAR water port you showed us. You probably can't see the water streams coming out of the lower unit because your is in a tub of water. ... just to let you know. I will do the PEE LINE as you did, I like to SEE WATER verification flow myself. I'll be calling you in a day or so, to chew the fat and talk boats. By the way my 97 is different than yours, I have only two seats, FLAT DECKS for standing on, and lots of Storage, also a Live well etc., We'll talk.... got to run and cover the boat up. I'm here in N. TX... Ttyl. Wally
Had anyone ever messed with the timing on these motors? Mine came from the factory 1.5 degrees off and it was run that way for 20 years. . I had it tuned up professionally last year and that's when they caught it. It's like a new motor this year.
Great video, thank you. I'm looking for the thermostat so I can clean or replace it. I changed the water pump earlier in the year and it's putting out plenty of water but the overheat horn is chirping. Can you tell me where I can find it?
I have the 1996 version while mine idles a little lower at around 800 rpm it runs really well. Yes those motor are known to vibrate very bad. Only issue I've had with mine was I had to have the lower rebuilt and mine has a slight miss in it at WOT that I have yet to figure out. Other that it has been a very good motor.
very informative video. thanks. I have a 1997 Force 40 hp. I hate the way the motor spits water instead of a stream. I want try this fix. my only concern is will this cause any damage to the motor. does it prevent the cooling water to circulate throughout the entire head ? thanks again
I've got a 1997 force 40 hp. Noticed today water was kind of spitting out from under the head. And top cylinder spark plug had a milky substance like water mixed with gas/oil. Bottom plug didn't have that issue. Any ideas on if its just the head gasket or do i need to remove the whole engine to replace the gaskets under it?
He mentioned briefly about a check valve on the fuel line connector. Anyone have more info on what he was talking about. I’ve replaced mine twice and I have to keep pumping the fuel bulb for it to run. Wondering if it’s a fuel pump problem or a connector problem. Thanks for anyone that has experience with this
Hey Mike, great video, I have the same motor on my boat but i have not tested it out yet, just installed it.. Did you drill and tap the 1/4 pee line on the top? If so could you explain a little bit how you did that, it seems like a great idea based on not being able to see the stream like on my previous motor (25 hp) And lastly, does it seem like this motor smokes a bit? testing it with the ears and in the garbage can makes quite a bit of smoke on mine.. Thanks!!! Matt
The hole is already there and tapped with a plug in it. I was changing out my fuel filter this past weekend and saw it there. I am going install a telltale on mine next weekend, however I would recommend using something better then the tubing he was using in the video. Black rubber tubing would be better to withstand the heat. The addition of a nice connector on the lower engine cowl would be much nicer the just drilling a hole in it.
So far the clear rubber tubing is doing fine but I will keep an eye on it...I also just installed a Hydrofoil..../ whale tale and am going to make a vedio about it soon...
I was not aware that there was a hole in the bottom cowl/motor cover housing for a pea line. I did drill a hole and ran the 1/4" line through it and so far it has been working fine. 10 uses....
Hey mike , I have water getting into the bottom lower cylinder . The cylinder and head appear to have no cracks. Do you know if there is any other place on these motors that could cause this problem which may be common?
I have a 1999 Fisher stick steer boat that seems to be about the same size as your boat. Do you know what size prop is on your outboard I also have a 40hp Force
I have the identical motor on my deepv16pro It runs good in the driveway but dies when on the lake. Does not idle its go or nothing runs good when idle is up.
Hey Mike how does the pee line work on this engine? I’ve always wanted to do this to my engine (98 force 40hp). I’ve always wondered if they plugged it off for a reason. Maybe to force more water through the engine? I’d just like to know how it effects the engine.
I don't know why it was pluged but a force expert mechanic said I should not add a peel line so I will just remove it... not that it pees a lot of water anyway.
I like your videos but there shouldn't be any water coming out of the exhaust hole,my mercury force 70 and 90 both have a hole on the upper right corner standing behind the boat looking forward it's on the same side as steering wheel so you can turn around and see it just below where the cowl sets .
Excellent video Mike. I joust bought a “75” crestliner with this motor on it. Not sure what year the motor is. It seems a little underpowered for this boat, but I’ll find out tomorrow. You have me concerned with this non ethanol thing, I’m gonna have to look into it. What mix ratio do you use on yours. Tx much. Abe
I got the same motor but got it all redone and went with a stainless steal prop and different pitch size and I used to only run about 28mph now I run 35 mph on a good day with little wind and windy days 32mph .
Mike Thank you I just bought a 1987 Landau 16' with a 1995 Force 40 I'm doing a complete redo on the boat and got to looking for the pee tube Holly Moes there isn't one I know when I was talking with the guy and the motor was running I saw water coming from the motor top end I didn't know the this model class used the exhuast port has the water release for the impeller Thank you again PS do you think it's a good idea to install the pee tube or just let it pee
Yeah install one for sure they didn’t have one but should have it’s fine by time it’s up too there it’s went all the way threw and just cycles back down and out & there is so much flow it will still come out the bottom holes too that impeller pumps more than the ports can handle it will increase your effectiveness of the system
Hi Mike,

This solved my issue too. Until I adjusted the lever, the throttle couldn’t get the carb to open all the way

I know its an old post by when mine did that it was the exhaust manifold gasket. It warps and causes the gasket to fail.
Thank you Mike 👍
Thank you for sharing this info

My bulb "does not" stay pumped up hard either, I just tightened the gas tank bleed valve but not all the way, it must stay open a little.
Hey buddybdonu happen to do what the plastic screw on the top is called and what the carburetor name

How do you get the square plastic piece out to add the pee line?
Thanks so much for your help..
How is that trailer holding up? I have the exact same one and the frame rails are rotting out. Hope yours is doing a lot better.
It is holding up very well, you can email me about it at basscarp@comcast.net

Mike, Where did you get the brass fitting for the pee line? What size is the fitting?

Yes i have the same question. Did anyone find it??
I did find it. I believe it was a 3/4 brass elbow.

Hi Mike. I have that same motor in my boat and for some reason fuel was leaking from the carburetor, do you have any idea what causes that?

Bad floats or inlet needles

a 40 hp force should push this boat 28 -31 mph with one person. I have a bota and motor just like this
