    I made one of these a couple of years ago - the "Disapearing Lathe". The headstock, tailstock and toolrest are three separate parts that clamp onto the edge of a B&D Workmate. It turns about a 5" diameter piece. For the tailstock, I made a live centre using the front wheel hub from a bicycle, because of the adjustable thrust ball bearing.

    I made one with just a drill, mandrel ,corner chuck and a clamp. Worked for what I needed. I was thinking about something more permanent. This is a great idea. Thanks.

    That was well done, looks very neat. I have just made a similar one and find the drill runs out of puff. Thank you.

    This is my first time here. I'm very impressed. I'm looking to turn small handles for home made wood carving knives. This set up, with a few small mods seems like it will fit the bill. I've subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos.

    Great job Moy. While I consider myself a woodworker, not a turner, there is something seductive about a tool you can knock out projects in a couple hours instead of build over a couple days or weeks.

    Back in the 80s I subscribed to just about every woodworking mag out. Can't remember which one it was, would have to do some digging. There was a article on how to make a full size lathe out of nothing but plywood. You did a great job

    Great build. One suggestion, make the tool rest adjustable so it can turn left or right. On factory built lathes, the banjo (the piece that holds the tool rest) and the tool rest can turn, instead of just moving in and out and up and down. That way, if you are turning something other than pens, you can keep the tool as close as possible to the work piece. That way, you avoid chatter or possibly catching the tool. Just and idea to make it more useful and enjoyable. Great build and thanks for sharing.

    Great simple construction. I know this is an older video but I'm thinking of making one of these. I just had to restore a staircase worth of antique spindles by hand, mostly just sanding. Something like this would have saved me enough time, I think, to build one of these machines. Hind sight is 20/20 😣

    It's funny how the simplicity & raw nature of this plywood construction is sooo inspiring! This calls to mind the work of Gökmen ALTUNTAŞ as well as others...this sort of simplicity truly is basic & no one can really say that you are 'copying' someone else, but after time you can see the finer details of the little influences & 'benchmarks that others have had on one's work.
    Often the influences are indirect & unintentional, nevertheless somehow they remain so.
    I appreciate you Moy! thanks for sharing your work...it's just s simple and enjoyable like a good cup of coffee & fresh bread!
    Poetry for the eyes no?

    • @allthings2allmen
      @allthings2allmen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Moy Gökmen himself probably would most likely agree your build is not really quite as simple or as basic, but I believe you understand the essence of my comment, & so I thank you sir.
      Plywood & basic hardware...necessity is the mother of a fine legitimate invention!

    Hi Moy
    Posting your work is always a risk - everyone wants to be a critic. What I appreciated was no muzak with your post. Also, you used what you had, pretty much anyway. You owned both the successes and the failures - and more importantly to me - you owned the challenges and demonstrated how to overcome them. At one time I owned a Shopsmith Mark IV, I think it was - back in the early 80s. Loved the lathe - horizontal boring machine - drill press features. Please keep posting your projects and please leave the muzak off. Much rather hear you and your tools than some techno crap so many folks use when they post. When it shows up, I am gone. Thanks again for your effort and for sharing.
