  • Hey there, everyone.
    It's been a little while since my last GT-1 Tutorial, but here's a new one. This time I'll teach you how to set up and assign the EXP1 (expression pedal) to control certain effects and parameters.
    This can be really handy, if you want to be able to control the amount of effects and parameters that affects your patch(es).
    Let me know if you have any questions or requests - I'd be happy to help out.
    Comment, subscribe and share, if you like what I'm doing with the channel.
    I'll see you in the next GT-1 tutorial.
    Cheers.

    That was very helpful! I knew that you could assign the expressional pedal to control certain things, but I didn’t realize that you could use it to increase the delay feedback and level in addition to the overdrive level. It’s a powerful tool. I am selling my boss ME90 and keeping my GT1 as my main unit.

      Hi there,
      Thank you, I greatly appreciate it.
      That's a great way of using the Expression pedal, and the Rotary effect is quite good!
      A tip, try experimenting with the placement of the Rotary. Either at the start of the signal chain, or before delay and reverb.
      I hope this helps.

    Your videos showing how to use the "assigns" are absolutely brilliant! This information about the 'assigns' has shown that this device has an enormous amount of power. I'm already thinking how useful this would be for creating a loop with a good backing sound, and being able to tap a foot button and alter various parameters without even leaving that patch to have a good lead sound. You could attach various assigns (up to 6?) to a button to have a slight volume boost , gain boost, different amp model and echo (for example) to go into a good lead sound for playing over your loop. Additionally, the idea of attaching several assigns to the pedal is full of potential (you could assign a gain increase, increase delay speed and tremolo depth to the pedal or any number of unique combinations). These vids about the assigns have really shown this device to have something unique the others don't have .... now I just have to get one ;-)

      Well, the Wah will come on, when the EXP pedal is pressed down, when in toe-position. If you have adjusted the threshold, it shouldn't be a problem.
      You can change between the different Wah types, if you find the PDL-icon, in the signal chain. Press the Memory-Edit and find the PDL menu.

    Your tutorials have been so useful in understanding the deeper editing within the GT-1 (ie. especially the "assigns"). I just made a 'clean' patch where the expression pedal alters the tape delay time, it's feedback and e.level. In my patch the min time is at 360ms and the max time is at 180ms (because I wanted the pedal to have a longer delay time or slower repeats when rocked back and a higher or tighter repeat rate when rocked forward). When rocked forward I also have an assign making the feedback go from min=32 to max=92 . Also I have an assign making the effects level go from min=50 to max=98. In this way I can get a fairly decent Roland Space Echo RE-201 kind of sound that increases repeats and intensifies the echo when the expression pedal is slowly rocked forward. The Boss GT-1 has amazing abilities with the assigns to alter various parameters all at once which is a major reason I just got the GT-1 yesterday! Thanks again for all of your useful tutorials (which made me want to get the GT-1 for these specific abilities). OK ... off to create more patches! (I'm having an "EMPTY" patch with 0 volume as every tenth patch to create patch groups and also my first two user patches (U01, U02) are "EMPTY" too so I don't accidentally enter factory preset 99 from my first usable use patch (U03) ... sort of a little buffer zone to separate my patches from the defaults). Anyway, I'd recommend the GT-1 to anyone wanting to create interesting custom sound shaping.

      @@GuitarNTabs You're welcome and thank you! I've had a flu for a week so wasn't doing much in the last few days (as I start to feel better) than patch creation on the GT-1 LOL (I got it Friday and it's now Monday). The first thing I did was try each default patch and then delete the User patches I don't like at all (most are just over-the-top extreme gain ones which I don't want). I also made my first two patches blank with zero volume and titled U01 as ">". Hehe, this is a kind of buffer zone to keep me from accidentally going into the default set factory patches. I've made about 20 patches so far.
      As far as how I have set up my GT-1, I have set the three rotary knobs at top to function as "Pre-amp Gain" (left knob) , "Pre-amp Level" (centre knob), and "Patch selection" (right knob). This is universal for all patches on the play screen (and of course the knobs will act in their usual way within each effect screen for altering their values. I find this is like a typical amp (gain, volume knobs from left to right) which I can alter quickly in the moment if I wanted to. I also am making the Up and Down square buttons below to not navigate patches (I am designing my patches to have two or three sound changes in each and I don't want to change patches in the middle of something) but to be used for effect activation (hence why I have the right rotary knob for "patch selection"). Mostly I am setting the "Up" button as a boost (turning on/off the OD/DS effect) in my patches (since "Up" seems logical for this). The "Down" button I can set for various effects but as an example in one patch I have the "Down" activating FX1 which I have as an Octave effect for a kind of bass sound. On that patch I think that makes sense (Down = bass).
      In the patch example above, I can start recording a loop playing some clean chords : then press "Down" to go into the Bass sound and overdub a bass line : then press down to get out of Bass and "Up" to boost my guitar sound and improvise over top of my backing loop without even leaving that patch!
      Basically my patch names are descriptive so I know what they do (so "CLEAN+BOOST+BASS" for that one ... I suppose if one was creating patches for doing 'cover songs' or their own 'songs' they might name them after those ).
      Speaking of the CTL1 button, I discovered a neat trick where I wanted to have it as a delay Tap Tempo. So I set it as that (it flashes red to show the tempo). I then set an "assign" for CTL1 as "delay on/off"! This works because if I tap it twice, it sets a tempo and turns the Delay off but also turns it back on again with the second press of setting the tempo! I can press the button once to turn off the delay (the old delay just plays out and doesn't cut off abruptly). Kind of a strange little trick but it's usable ;-).
      One main aspect I'm centered on for my GT-1 usage is the looper. So I want to have part of a patch that can be for a backing (cleaner guitar, maybe a bass, etc) and be able to just boost and maybe adding some effect for improvising over top). I guess one thing I have to work around is that when in the Looper mode, the CTL1 is used for recording, overdubbing and stopping the loop so it can't be used then for altering the guitar effects (although I do have some assigns attached to it for when I'm not in looper mode).
      One other issue with how the looper is set up is that to clear a loop after it's stopped, you need to hold the CTL1 button down for a few moments but in doing so, it plays the recorded loop a tiny bit (I would rather avoid that). The thing I will be doing is just turning the looper off (UP+CTL1) instead of clearing it to avoid having this happen. I can then turn it back on if I want to do a new loop)
      I think in the future I'd probably have to get an actual dedicated Loop pedal to free up my CTL1 button on the GT-1 for the CTL1 with it's multiple assigns to be usable in Looper mode (I do have various assigns attached to the CTL1 in some patches but they are not usable if I'm in Loop mode). The Boss RC-300 looks intriguing but huge and costly ... perhaps the RC-30 might be more reasonable (but we'll see).
      I'm pondering the idea of having the GT-1 at table top level for adjusting by hand (just using the built-in expression pedal for altering various effect parameters like delay times, reverb levels, tremolo times, etc) , while having the RV-5 expression pedal on the floor for foot use (for Wah or whatever). I'm wondering if this "BOSS
      AB-2B - 2 Way Line Selector" pedal could possibly be used to switch between the RV-5 external expression pedal and something like the BOSS FS-7 Dual footswitch (with it's vertically placed two buttons, they could possibly be pressed at the same time too ... so toggle two things at one time)! Then you could toggle between the external expression pedal and the FS-7 for two new buttons ;-) .
      Anyway, sorry for the huge rambling text LOL ... perhaps if anyone reads through it, it can show some reader how one can set this device up in various ways (you don't have to stick to the default way).

      @@mountainstartemple6041 - Hey there! Sorry for the late reply!
      Aah, I hope you're better now! And that you've experimented with the GT-1 in the meantime!
      Sounds like a good idea to create those two buffer patches, to keep things apart.
      Great use of the UP and DOWN footswitches! It's great that you can assign them to do other things as well! I've used that too.
      Good idea, a separate loop pedal would be a good buy! Sure, it will free up the CTL1, which is good ;-)
      Seems like you have a lot of good stuff to go through and discover! It's great!
      Yeah, one of the Boss loopers would do, that's for sure.
      I have the AB-2 switcher, and I use it for switching instruments. I don't know if you suggestion would work.. Maybe.. I haven't tried.
      Haha, no worries at all! It's great to interact and hear how you're doing and using the GT-1!

      @@GuitarNTabs Thanks for the reply. I'd doing better but this flu kind of hangs in there LOL. I was 'fiddling around' (ok 'guitaring' around) with the Boss GT-1 a lot so I think I know it well now. I like a lot about it and it's "assigns" and customizations are really great for a small self-contained unit (perhaps a second expression pedal would be a good addition).
      I've created some patches with a clean-to-gain increase on the expression pedal (assign for increasing gain on the pre-amp or OD but also an assign for lower volume so it doesn't get far louder ... a lot of just trial and error in setting mins and maxes for parameters but that sounds really cool). I'm kind of going over some of the patches I made and adjusting them to be better and to work better for doing loop improvisations (maybe when I first got it and had the flu more, they weren't created perfectly hehe). I'm also trying to adjust my patches to have better similar volumes.
      I hooked up my previous multi-unit (The Zoom G1on) and am using that as the looper since it has two foot buttons with one for pausing the loop! I'm thinking how the GT-1 was designed for loop control wasn't ideal (for pausing/stopping the loop, you have to tap the CTL1 button twice but the first tap starts the Dub part and so it can record some sound before you tap the second time to stop. Then if you restart that loop it can have a tiny bit of dubbed sound on it. My Zoom G1on looper can be paused and restarted with the right foot button while record and dub is done by the left foot switch. It works without any kind of unwanted glitch. The looper on the Zoom G1on also has a visual time bar on screen showing how much time you have used in your loop ... really handy. Anyway, this way I can totally free up the CTL1 button while looping with the G1on.
      Perhaps in the future I would get a more advanced looper (with multiple loops, more controls and more time ... the 28 seconds on the GT-1 and the 30 seconds on the Zoom G1on can't really take a full slow 12-bar blues backing which would be handy sometimes) but for now the Zoom G1on can handle that and also I can have added effects (like 'Particle reverb" or more delays if I wanted to get more into an ambient sound. I'm thinking of fitting the GT-1 and the Zoom G1on onto a home-made pedal board ... what's great about both of them is that that can take batteries so it would be a completely portable setup (and my amp can take C-cell batteries ... my Vox DA-10 so it's portable too). I could take my setup into the forest or abandoned factory LOL.
      Alright ... less babbling , more playing LOL ... take care!

    This is a gt100 question, but could apply to the gt1 - I am trying to use the expression pedal for the effect level of the univibe. I want to go from dry - to full wet signal. When the univibe effect level goes to zero - the whole patch is muted. How do you avoid that? I’ve tried everything, and can’t seem to get around it.

      You need to change a setting in the EX1 menu. Press Memory-Edit and find the EX1 icon and press Enter.

    Hi mate - really enjoyed your video so I'm hoping that you can help me with my question. I bought a GT1 second hand and there are a number of patches I would love to use but I would much rather that the expression pedal wasn't used to control the volume. I'm a rhythm guitarist so generally don't need to worry about that side of things when I'm playing with my band. Is there an easy way to simply "unlink" the volume from the expression pedal please? I'm all ears :)

      @GuitarNTabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, Rockplayedright64
      Thanks for your comment and question, I really appreciate it.
      You can "unlink" or disable the volume option, for the expression pedal by going into the EX1 menu, in the Signal Chain, and turn it counter-clockwise until you see OFF.
      Now the expression pedal won't do a thing, unless you want it to control certain effects parameters, etc. If so, then set it to PDL FX.
      I believe that should be it.

      Well, noise can come from all sorts of places, to be honest... It could possibly be coming from your guitar.. if it's not shielded properly, or at all.. It could also have something to do with how you set up your patches and distortion.. or how the GT-1 is set up... There are many factors here..
      How are you using the GT-1? With your own amplifier, for effects only? Or something different?.

    I’m trying to emulate that pitch shift -one octave down- from the first riff of lonely boy (black keys) using the expression pedal but it’s not working as expected. The signal “cuts” while the pitch is coming down to the target (-12) in this case.
    Could anyone simulate that effect on GT1??

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, Sergio!
      Thanks for your comment and question.
      I think the signal "cuts" because your expression pedal is still acting as a volume pedal...
      Take a look at my tutorial for the expression pedal here:
      th-cam.com/video/bkjftom_LIs/w-d-xo.html
      I'm sure that will help you out.

    • @Sergio-iv5do
      @Sergio-iv5do 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tks for the feedback.
      The pedal is not acting as volume, I could confirm that the same way as you did in the video. When I press the pedal I can see the pitch control going down on the FX associated with the pitch shift. The point is that the transition is not smooth, the note ringing goes down in steps, the same way happens with the pitch knob.
      The result is far away from what I hear in that riff.
      Not sure if I’m clear with my explanation, i’ll try to record my settings.

    • @Sergio-iv5do
      @Sergio-iv5do 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to update you. It’s Done!!!

      Hey there! 😊

      Out Level is the Master Output of the GT-1.
      Patch Level is the level of the patch you're on - each patch has the Patch Level, to adjust, if needed.
