Aston Martin V12 Vantage S Manual - One Take

  • The Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is proper manly exotic car stuff. Small body, huge engine, manual gearbox with a funky pattern, and everything else is a distant second place. Nevertheless, we've got a soft spot for this ode to the old school.

I really appreciate Aston Marin's huge balls to just give the finger to the rest of the other company's and make a true sports car. Only if I could afford one :(

Manual transmissions are the best for the experience. At the end of the day stats and figures are all dick measuring what really matters is how much fun you have and how satisfying it is to drive the car. The car does lack colour though but that's personal preferences, I like colourful interiors.

Matt, TG said it gears ago, and I think it still holds true today... This is one of the last true driver's supercars. It still has some electronic aids, but not so much that an average joe can push it's limits. It's the last of a dying breed. Hope they keep making it, as it's a glorious example of old meets modern!

There is a subtlety and classiness to Astons that Lambos and Ferraris don’t quite have (orange stripes on this one notwithstanding). Lambos are for “hey, look at me” and Ferraris are for “I an successful and I want everyone to know”. Astons are James Bond sophisticated.

440 ft/lbs at the crank with 7 gears, the wheel torque must be pretty crazy.
One improvement for sure would've been to design the dash to better avoid the windscreen reflection.

I feel like I would get super confused by the dog-leg 1st gear, but then would probably get used to it, then would get back in my car and keep putting it in 2nd to start out. I bet the car has plenty of torque that it could start out in 2nd gear without much issue.

To idiots who say "overpriced and underpowered" "aston martins look the same", just keep in mind that *this car is pretty much the last ever production car to have a naturally aspirated V12 mated to a 3 pedal manual. Lambo stopped with their manual LP670 SV and Ferrari stopped with their ultra rare manual 599 ages ago. Just let that sink in for a minute. Let alone how beautiful this 2005 design looks. This car deserves the hype.*

All Astons look the same because they pretty much perfected their design. I forget what design principles they use specifically but Matt mentioned it on an episode of the podcast. There is actual math and engineering behind the design that they can't change it much from car to car, but I'm not complaining because they're beautiful.

Terrible colour choices, but this car is amazing. Something dreams are made of. We are all going to miss that N/A engine note in a few years. Nice analogue car built purely for the love of driving, and damn the stat warriors in the journos and on the internet...which mean little anyway when you are behind the wheel. Odd having the racing transmission pattern in a car that probably will see few track days, but it I guess it adds to the nature of the car. Aston, you are awesome as it seems you build cars for your customers, not just to make money...let's just hope you can keep the magic going in the future.

The effort you need to put in to drive it properly, the interior feel, clunky(ish) suspension and other flaws aside, i think this car has a specialness that doesnt really come with most modern cars. "This is probably the most nimble V12 powered car ever built" I'm going to go ahead and say that (having never driven any of these cars mind you) the Mclaren F1 and LaFerrari are undoubtedly more nimble than this given that they weigh ~1200 and ~650 pounds less respectively and are rear mid engine meaning a more rearward weight distribution.

It’s a lot, but the very least the 7th gear (perhaps also the 6th gear) is just for an overdrive, which allows the other 6 gears to be a closer ratio.

Here's a really simple way to get your head around the gearbox: Just think of it as a perfectly normal gearbox where the first gear stopped working so now you have to start in second until you get the car to the shop.

Matt, this is completely random, but I think that I just got off a plane with you! I was in row 27 wearing a white BMW CCA t shirt. I thought that it might have been you, but didn't think that I would run into anyone semi-recognizable until I saw clutch and gas tattooed on your leg! By the time I realized it, you were out of the terminal! What I would have said, had I met you, is that I enjoy your channel and have a love for cars just like you!

    • @petermarino2915

It's for closer gear ratios to stay in the powerband more between each gear without compromising overall speed by adding an extra gear.

My gripe with glass displays, (i fly both steam gauge and glass cockpits), is that glass displays fade over time, they are useless when a little bit of glare hits them, they compromise your night vision, they look so bland and tasteless when the vehicle is turned off, touch controls are fucking useless during a bumpy road or turbulence, and you should not be navigating an endless library of menus while operating a moving vehicle. They also just have no character. There’s no craftsmanship aspect to them. They also tend to suffer from information overload, and displaying information digitally is more difficult for the human brain to interpret than a gauge needle. For example, a rising needle gives you trend data, whereas a digital number changing rapidly does not.
You also don’t have a proper gauge auto-dim itself off like an entire glass display will do with all your instruments on it, and then be unable to fix it (because the brightness controls are hidden in menus you can no longer see) while you are low to the ground, in the clouds, at night.

How do you not get confused with driving so many cars. I have 2, a g37 sedan and a 9th gen civic si. They are as opposite as you could get. one is auto quiet and with a hydraulic power steering, and the other is manual with electric power steering and loud. I get confused as hell just trying to fuel them up.

  • @Casey_J96

NA V12, dog leg manual and hydraulic steering. That's a car. Like he said anyone can hop in a Ferrari and click the paddle into first and go. Not that it would be a cake walk to control that but I would be way more intimidated to take say this Aston or a viper out on the road.
