    Love the D55 sound (and look), but to me, the jumbo sounds a bit tinny, despite having a rosewood body. I have a Guild rosewood OM and it sounds great, lots of depth for a smaller guitar.

    • @shred5
      @shred5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't really get tinny out of this at all, but the way it's being mic'd may have an effect. I always found the rosewood F-55s are pretty low heavy personally. Some people really love the rosewood ones but to me they're best in maple.

      @@williamcole9040 Yeah mine is Maple. It's one of the all around best sounding acoustic guitars I ever played. Full sounding, no weak high notes which some maple guitars suffer from etc.
      I only played one Rosewood model. I recall the bass was fairly overpowering. Someone who always plays with a pick and plays heavy like a bluegrass player may fare much better than I did.

      The jumbo somehow sounds horribly in this video. My F55 sounds more articulate and sweeter than my D55. The D55 sounds like typical dreads; thunderous and mellow but lack definition of the F55. Anyway it’s all personal preference and it’s ok if you like one more than the other.

      Sorry about that, I am sure this is especially since you keep up with proper humidification. At age 66, and retired, I doubted that I would stay on top of humidification after moving to the arid Sonoran desert, so bought a RainSong carbon fiber Jumbo from Music Villa, instead of the Guild F40 that I really wanted. I love the sound of the Guilds, but the zero maintenance RainSong is a better fit for me … leave it on the stand, play daily, restring every 30 days… that’s it. Guild refuses to make guitars with 1 3/4" nut width. Fantastic guitars though. I have a 1996 JF-55 (now called F-55), but mine has a rare 1 3/4" width. Only a few (in the later 90's) were made. I also have a 1979 Guild F212XL NT 12 string jumbo... love it.

      I wanted a custom 1 7/8" nut width, and called Guild, thinking that they could simply use a 12 string neck/fingerboard, but cut the nut, saddle, bridge, and pegged for 6 string. No soap, they refused, regardless of any custom fee... It might have to do with them worrying about not being able to support one-offs. I don't know.

      Funny to hear that you compared jumbos to dreads just to know which one is better. Even in this videos the gentlemen compared the differences but never once they said one is better than the other. The reason people have both dreads and jumbos because of the differences and for different music and songs. Maybe that reason is not so for you.

    There's no question that some Guild models are among the best production acoustic guitars ever made. I own two F512 models- one from the classic Westerly period (1975) and one from the wonderful New Hartford era (2009). What characterizes the Guild tone is a midrange warmth/emphasis. The Martin sound is a bit scooped, with punchy clear bass and clean treble. The Gibson sound is a treble emphasis, a bright "chime" and are generally best used with cowboy chords in the open position. Taylors are probably the closest to Guild, a more flat response. I haven't played enough of them but I haven't found a model yet I prefer or on par with Guild.
    The midrange warmth makes Guilds excellent for strummed accompaniments.
    The D55 demoed here sounds closer to the Gibson sound (as Paul pointed out).
    My '75 (which I purchased new at the time) has that classic Guild 12-string sound- long sustain, a warm wash of tone. The New Hartford, which I picked up more recently, has been a revelation, one of the best and most balanced guitars I've ever played. It still has that Guild midrange and sustain but with a bit of Martin sound blended in as well- a clear punchy bass and a touch more high end sheen for clarity. The sonic individuation of notes is outstanding. I'll also mention that my Guilds both play impeccably up the neck (something that seems to be lacking with Gibsons).
    I keep one or the other set up as a 6-string (in effect, F50R/F55 with slight wider necks) and they're both outstanding in that configuration as well.
    Here's a good demo of an older model F50R, circa 1985:
