I just pulled the trigger on Oathsworn at request of the wife. She wanted it for her birthday after beating Gloomhaven so thankfully I don't have to worry about the doghouse on that purchase.
Jaws of the Lion is great, and my group loves it, we're about halfway through and people are looking forward to Gloomhaven which I also have, one thing that makes me hesitant to start the big box, is I love the scenario book in jaws of the lion it makes setup so much quicker. They are working on a campaign scenario booklet like that for Gloomhaven and Frosthaven so I tempted to just wait for that. also on Primal one of the main draws besides the gameplay, is how manageable the campaign is to get through time-wise
@@DuraheLL played with my daughter with a character each. We completed 43 scenarios and played circa 50 with fails. I would put our average time for each at 2 hours including event cards and post scenario clear up, so likely about 100 hours. That is playing time only though as I was fortunate enough to be able to have the game permanently set up and I would also have our next scenario ready to go ahead of time I.e. tiles, standees, etc. Without that likely another 1/2 hour per scenario. The various Gloomhaven apps are also a great help in keeping things organised and reducing the amount of stuff on the table 😄
Huge thing with Etherfields that people should mention: they wrote rules for a new "I'm here for the experience" mode that streamlines a lot of things and makes it less punishing, more straightforward
Wait the game is punishing ? My group has like 7 dreams left of the Wave 1 content (unless there are some hidden gates somewhere, I've riffled through quickly) We got close to dying exactly once. None of us ever died, we're still not sure what happens if we do. The game has been a breeze and way too easy for us.
You define the phrases "new and shiny" and "squirrel". Love how you have all these hopes and dreams to play all the games. There isn't enough hours in the day.
Rest assured, Unsettled is not a campaign game However, this will not shorten your list, because you've missed Chronicles of Drunagor in the list of games you will soon receive :D
To be clear, he had said for AR, don't back 2 wave shipping; I think he meant to say don't back 1 wave shipping. 2 waves means that you will get your game in 2 separate waves, that way you don't have to wait an 2 years for your game.
Unsettled isn't a campaign game as far as I know. It is a survival game you break out, do a planet in a sitting and then next time you can do a different one. To me it makes me think of Robinson Crusoe in space
Yes, I came to comment the same thing. It's really multiple, replayable, single-shot survival scenarios (one for each planet) with no overarching story or carry-over consequences between scenarios. That, and the game mechanics, are a couple of reasons I thought Unsettled might be a better fit for me than ISS Vanguard. But, in the end I got them both... :)
@@JohnClem56 you said it perfectly! I ended up backing both as well. I loved them both for different reasons. ISS Vanguard gives me the Star Trek feel I’ve been looking for while Unsettled seemed like a unique approach to a replayable cooperative game. The Robinson Crusoe in space seems like a great comparison!
We have the same issue with Gloomhaven - we absolutely love it (and it was certainly the gateway into our ever growing game collection) but it's a real chore (even with the excellent Go7 organizer) to get it setup and on the table. If it doesn't get setup early in the week it doesn't get played... But when it does we truly enjoy the results of the time investment!
Maybe try the Fantasy Setup Gloomhaven Mod for TTS! It is highly scripted and excellently done honestly. Gloomhaven always looked a bit too fiddly for me, too, but now, especially during the lockdown, I have played it about halfway through already. No setup, no packing away, no searching for tokens and standees, just gameplay. Can't recommend it enough.
good thing no one mentioned tmnt change is constant, altar quest, batman the animated series, hell boy, dark venture, core space, zombicide undead and alive, freedom five, md2, nemesis 1+2 campaigns, dawn of madness, it's a wonderful world, clank legacy, chronicles of drunagor, aeons trespass odyssey, sleeping gods, burncycle, bloodborne, pandemic legacy season 0 and solomon kane or I might start to worry
@Babes & Board Games mechanically it's a step more complex vs street masters, same game but with "altar" dice that you roll as you use them and can be used by the enemy to power attacks if the wrong faces are showing. I prefer it on the small boards from the expansion that make if feel like a meatier street masters, as the huge board is a bit of a slog and less interesting to move around. If you only own one, I'd still recommend street masters for the sheer content variety. if you wanted Street masters but streamlined and smaller, contra isn't a bad choice.
I’m also waiting for Oathsworn. One of my concerns is the actual table space needed to play, using their “battle flow” system. The system is unique and looks fun. It seems like there could be an alternate system which doesn’t require you to rotate cards around your character board. That’s a huge amount of space. On the other hand, I do appreciate the companion system which allows you to play tru solo instead of four-handed solo.
It's not so bad. Takes up about the same amount of space as playing Gloomhaven's character board. I don't want to make it seem like it takes up no space, but probably nothing absurd if you're able to put a game like Gloomhaven on the able.
There are far too many campaigns for campaign games, and ain't no body got time for all of them. When it comes time to pull out a game, we find ourselves going for competitive games most of the time. Just easier to get out, have fun, and be done.
If you did not complete Jaws of the Lion until now, when the game was still hot, probably you'll never do it unless you stop buying anything else and move to a remote cabin for 1-2 years to go through the backlog.
Many of these games are huge, with tons of content. Other than Alex, I don't see how my fellow gamers can pledge and buy multiple of these all in pledges and find the time to get into all the content. I admire all ya'lls dedication to it.
This video reminded me that i have gloomhaven, jotl, and tainted grail at home and have oathsworn, aot, 7th citadel, frosthaven, etherfields, iss vanguard and sleeping gods on the way. Im a sucker for story/campaigns even tho i dont know when im ever going to play all these lol
This is an interesting list and perhaps a "problem" with modern gaming. I've got a few campaign games and got others coming and I find it extremely difficult to find the motivation to play them. As a counter to this video, I'd love to see a list of campaign games you've finished and your thoughts on them.
Right on time! I'm dancing around the Tanares Adventures late pledge, but decided to wait until FrostHaven. I've got to finish BlackStone Fortress, then have a few campaign games to look forward to already, including HEL, Etherfields and Massive Darikness 2 (if I like it enough to buy the campaign mode)
Keep Gloomhaven! It is a landmark game. You know how to play it and can pick it up at any time. And is there any game in this genre that is really better? I think not.
I know a lot of people love Tainted Grail, and maybe some of my experience is tinged by how long I had to wait, but after playing through Chapter 1, I find it hard to find reasons to play this over The Hunters AD 2114, which I think does all of Tainted Grail's highlights (survival, exploration, campaign story) better in every way.
I guess I'll have to investigate Stormsunder a little more. When the ks was live I remember thinking it looked very standard and by-the-numbers. Also, one more entry on my personal list will be Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. It's looking like that will be coming out in April.
Great video!! Lots of great games, lots of tough choices to make. You immediately had me checking out some of the games you mentioned!! Not sure if you have a cold, or the mic is too close/gain too high, but it was tough listening at times... We could hear you swallow... or something or another. Also, the sound of someone drinking water is like nails on a chalkboard... Yowzers!! Just small nitpicks... Great video with tons of GREAT content!! Great job!
Thanks for the feedback, I listen to all my videos but not with headphones....were you listening with headphones? Just trying to get a feel for the issues and how to ensure they don't happen.
I seem to be following you. But you can add Aeon Trespass, Solomon Kane, Shadows of Brimstone, Vampire the Masquerade Chapters, Frosthaven, and Elia and Something Shiny. EEK!. I’ve just gone and bought KDM with it’s 12 expansions as well. Not sure I know when I will play any of them, as I’m still 4,000 miles from home. But the plan will be to start somewhere, and retire gracefully still playing them.
Yeah your going to have to read that rule book 3 or more times. Once you play the first couple of Dreams though people get the hang of it. Though I would advise against bringing new people in the middle of it lol.
I think this is the first game that I decided not to buy the second wave expansions for. I'm going to play the main boxes and then move on. It started with me having to call my bank and authorize a foreign payment. I just never got around to doing that and then realized I didn't care enough to get the rest. Used the money to back Bardsung lol.
13:40 You said ‘games that will hold their value’ are you buying some of these to make a small profit on the resell? Or do you mean you can open, play, and then resell the content for near the price you paid?
I really need to understand how to do this. I always give games I don’t want anymore away. I’ve never done that yet with a Kickstarter game and I don’t want to. You seem so confident about reselling these games. Do you pay the shipping or does the buyer?
@@BoardGameCo Hehe. Look, I know the game is too big, but I'm running 4 different campaigns with 3 different gaming groups ( one is solo ), and I don't have organisers and I'm not using an app, and never had any problems with it. I love big, heavy and long board games and D&D, so GH is like a dream come true
Hey Alex, like I said before when your schedule opens up I'd be glad to help you play some PvP with us on Arena the Contest /Tanares Adventures. I'm always helping new players or veterans get back into the game. 😃
I'm pretty proud of the fact my circle of gaming friends had 2 concurrent groups of Gloomhaven consisting of 8 people and we finished the core box and are working of forgotten circles. Every time I play a campaign or dungeon crawler I just think how I'd rather be playing Gloomhaven
I’m on chapter 7 of the main campaign of tainted grail and have not gotten to the 2 other campaigns yet. Now that my character is really leveled up and has good cards. I feel powerful and it’s a good story.
I'm looking at v Commandos because of a Weekly Quack episode from months ago. You guys had talked about it at length and my husband happened to be listening to the episode with me, and we both thought it sounded like a game we'd love. And now it's coming to kickstarter. So definitely backing!
Since I don't have a boardgaming channel that forces me to always be playing the new shiny thing, I feel comfortable in getting and keeping a bunch of these campaign games for as long as it takes to play them. That said...I doubt I can justify getting any more than I've already received or am waiting on. BTW Oathsworn has one box filled with the mystery boss encounters, so that's at least one box you don't have to open and organize on your table every time you play. You would take out only the one encounter you are doing that session.
@@BoardGameCo now that it was actually enough time to watch it, one interesting question on my mind in terms of campaign games. as a reviewer, would you think given how crowded the competition for the time is, even for reviewer level of dedication, would first few games experience rated as critically important criteria i.e. for regular game you can get your money's worth in a few plays. but campaigns ask a lot more and it's normal to not finish them due to many factors, including scheduling. I have a hunch if campaign game is well worth the time within a few sessions, it's value meets that of "normal" boardgame. but if it takes a while to start rolling (like Gloomhaven needing to find certain combos to get comfortable), that should be viewed as negative, since there is a very real risk a buyer will never get to that point.
I have no idea where I am going to store oathsworn but if it is even half as good as it looks I think the hassle will be worth it. Also the people behind it are amazing. Great customer service.
Great video. I have (or been waiting for) quite few of the games in this list!. Long campaign games usually pull me in. I wanted to get others in this list, but decided to not back them because of the limited time to play all of them. Probably will try to get some of them later
Oathsworn, man.... Oathsworn. Fortunately for me, I am newer to this hobby, and have a ton of space on my shelves. And some spare time! (not a ton, but enough)
I absolutely understand where you're coming from with Middara. I backed the first KS for it, and had played a couple of campaign board games before it arrived. But, once I had it out on the table and started playing it, the unique modern/fantasy setting really drew me in. The story absolutely blows away the competition. It makes Gloomhaven feel disjointed and lost by comparison. I HAD to play it to completion, and will do so again before Acts 2 & 3 arrive.
I don't quite have 24 on my list, but I realized we have a lot of crossovers. I was able to resist several of yours and it appears that I went in on some other campaigns that you chose not to. Here are my 17: 1. Tainted Grail - I went all-in on this as well. I personally found this game more satisfying when using the house rule that the Menhirs can see up to 2 spaces away rather than 1. 2. Etherfields - I went all-in on this. I found myself enjoying the game mechanics but the story wasn't captivating so I'll see if I actually go through the wave 2 stuff 3. ISS Vanguard - Went all-in on this. I hope this is better than the previous 2 iterations of their games. 4. Gloomhaven - This was my first big game to invest in heavily. Played through this one completely once and then about 50 missions in a 2nd time. I purchased JotL and never got past the tutorial haha. I'll eventually get to JotL... 5. HEL - This game was good to play and I'm looking forward to trying it. Thankfully, they listened to feedback and are fixing their crappy prayer system. It was good to see that responsiveness from them. 6. Hunters AD - I purchased the base and big-box expansion. I hope this turns out to be a good one! 7. Bardsung - Went all-in on gameplay content. It looks like this will be a good variation on dungeon crawlers, so I hope it does well. Thankfully, I stayed away from all the add-on stuff that wasn't specifically for gameplay. 8. Unsettled - Went all-in on this. Can't wait to try it. It looks like it'll be an interesting exploration and resource management game. Hope it does well. 9. Trudvang - Just did the base game for this. I would have gone all-in on this game, but I actually am not really intrigued by the art and sculpts of the minis. 10. Oathsworn - I went all-in on this. I have had the opportunity to play this game 100% of the way through (I'm a tester) and I'm really glad I backed it. Great game. Really excited to get a physical copy of this game because I enjoyed it immensely through the digital medium. I've seen the pictures of the white box sample of the game...it really is 3 Gloomhaven boxes and I doubt you'll be able to condense it much. 2 of those boxes come from the minis. 11. 7th Citadel - I backed this because I enjoyed 7th Continent, but I'm not sure this game will grab me the same way other RPG kind of games will. I hope I'm wrong and it ends up being a fantastic experience. 12. Stormsunder - I went all-in on this...and I hope I don't regret this. It's a massive game lol. 13. Primal - I went all-in on this game and I really enjoy this game. I've only played against 2 monsters so far, but it's been a good experience. 14. Frosthaven - A game that I've backed that you didn't mention. I am banking on the fact that they are improving upon the base Gloomhaven experience. 15. Aeon Trespass - You didn't mention this one, but it's a campaign game that it massive and heading my way. Good game. 16. Isofarian Guard - Another game you didn't mention. This looks to be a good solo and 2-player game. Hoping it turns out well. 17. Sleeping Gods - Another unlisted game. This is a good game. I haven't played it as much as I'd like, but it is a solid experience from Red Raven.
Hey. I went all-in on Oathsworn as my first KS (shipping usually stops me, but this game looked way to good so I bit the bullet). Good to hear you were a tester and enjoyed it. How many of the scenarios did you play? Did you do the story and battle part? I really hope this game is as good as it looks and that it will be a worthy purchase with a ton of replayability. How does your character progression feel like? Does it feel like you become "stronger" as the game goes on? I actually decided between this and Aeon's Trespass, which looks great as well. Hopefully we still receive Oathsworn this year!
@@kobusbrits3523 I've played both the story and the encounters. You're in for a real treat. The story is incredible and since it branches multiple ways it definitely can be experienced multiple times. You end up at the same bosses but the story can be wildly different experiences. You do have a sense of character progression both through the new skills you acquire and have to choose from and the gear that you acquire. Aeon Trespass is another game I'm actively testing and they both will be amazing experiences but they are definitely designed for different audiences. Aeon Trespass will appeal more to people who like KDM. Oathsworn is more forgiving and accommodates more casual styles of play as well as the hardcore.
@@anthonynelson8397 Thanks for the info. This reassures me that I made a great purchase and I can't wait to experience it myself. Around how many hours do you think it will take to complete? I plan to mostly play solo (wife might join every now and then), and I heard Oathsworn works well when using the character's "simplified version". Do you think Aeon's Trespass will be suited for solo play, or will it be too much to handle alone? I haven't played KDM yet, but liked what I saw of it (reminds me of Dark Souls which I love). I think I'd enjoy AT:O a lot, but unfortunately shipping is a bit on the crazy side for me.
@@kobusbrits3523 Generally speaking, when I played Oathsworn solo (my typical setup was 2 full characters and 2 companions) the story would take about 45min and the encounter would take 60-90min. There are 21 chapters, so about 50-60 hours. When I played it with 3 other people the story would take 1-2 hours and the encounters would take 1.5-2 hours - so roughly 60-80 hours with a full group of players. Aeon Trespass can definitely be played solo, but you have to play it with 4 full characters. When I test the fights solo I haven't found it to be overwhelming. The hard part about KDM and Aeon Trespass is the initial learning curve. Once you learn the game it's not too bad. My personal preference is to play them with 2 players so that I can have another person helping me see the various possibilities in combat (there are a lot of moving pieces if you want to min-max). If you're playing solo, I think Oathsworn has an easier learning curve and is less hectic to juggle by yourself.
Zombicide (black plague and green horde) is the game I use to get people hooked on board games. I'm kind of over it, but it's not a pain to break out and play with new people, because I remember my first experience with it and how much fun I had.
Set up time getting to the table seems to be a recurring theme on why the big campaign games just languish unplayed/uncompleted. . Jaws of the Lion does address some of these issues. Primal looks to go a step further by streamlining the board and minis needed per session. I think a 20 hour campaign gameplay time is more than sufficient on the most part and hope to see more. Of course the epic campaigns still have their place.
Agreed. There’s more not listed here since this video was made. (Isofarian guard, agemonia, sleeping gods both installments, just to name a few). Plus it’d be nice to see if any were played to completion since this video was made
I want to back Robinson Crusoe , I love the idea of the book of adventurers but worried it has more content then I can ever possibly play. The only campaign game I have is My City mostly because it was easy to play, get to the table and complete
I backed Vanguard and Destinies and hope I have time to play them. Oathsworn backed too, but I doubt I'll be able to fit it in for the same reasons you mentioned. Did you back Nova Aetas: Renaissance? That may be the one I'm most excited about. Course, I think it's later that most/all of the ones you mentioned.
Great video - this is right down my alley because most of the Kickstarters that I'm drawn to are campaign-based game. I pledged a lot of the games on your list, and most of the ones I didn't pledge happened before I got into the hobby. I've also pledged a couple that you don't have: Aeon Trespass: Odyssey and Nova Aetas: Renaissance. Was there a particular reason these 2 games didn't appeal to you?
I would love to play Gloomhaven and Middara more often but I dont have the table space to keep it setup constantly, and so I dont bother with playing it much
That's some hours of gameplay you have there. Wow... Maybe, strategy wise, it's advisable and backing smaller (shorter) games. Just to freshen things up!?
Backing The Hunters 2114 A.D. and Oathsworn are the reasons I stopped backing any other games (till July 2021 is the goal) as I am super excited for both but also respect that they deserve an equal amount of time and dedication to justify getting them. However, the revelation that Oathsworn takes up THAT much space certainly has me concerned about it as it’s way more than anticipated! The Hunters recently had a companion app released that will help minimise the table space required for event cards and such, which is great as that was my biggest concern there. Also, you really must check out the play through videos of The Hunters on Dungeon Crawlers Anonymous’ channel as those vids will really give you a fantastic understanding of the game and universe. They really helped me decide to back it. That said, I’m looking forward to diving in!
Where can I pledge or purchase middara? This game look awesome. Will ISS Vanguard have a late pledge? I’m looking to go all in on both above campaigns. Thanks
16:00 "the track record of Mythic Games" how is that listed as something that persuaded you to back Hel? :D Especially pre SFB and Solomon Kane when the Hel campaign was live their track record was horrendous... Their track record was precisely the main thing besides the basic looking gameplay that fortunally made me overcome my FOMO and not back it. Also, I'm fairly certain that The Everrain is a one-shot experience, not a campaign game.. Guess we'll see in about 2028, if at all :D Still, great video! I think it's crazy that 8 plays is in your "played a lot" category while I'd say I haven't really started playing a game under 10 plays. But even with a lot less games competing for my time I still get anxious thinking about Oathsworn, Tanares and Stormsunder heading my way, so I get it.
No big campaigns? #robinsoncrusoecollectors ? First you insult the best Star Wars movies and now dis Robinson Crusoe! Unsubscribe! ....uh, then resubscribe because I love your content. *shakes fist at* You win this round Alex...you win this round.
I plaid a LOT of GH... like 100 scenarios more or less. But I gotta say, I do feel exhausted atm. I have one mission more to play, the scenario finale for Forgotten Circles. In any case, the layer around layer around layer of game was very very very good for me and wife. If you get to the point to enjoy the secrets and the progression, I'd imagine you cant stop. You wont see this in 1 or 2 games, it takes tens... maybe it isnt for you ^^
Some on my list that weren't listed: Aeon's Trespass Roll Player Adventures Vampire the Masquerade: Chapters Stars of Akarios The Isofarian Guard Aeon's End: Legacy of Gravehold Cloudspire: Ankar's Plunder (solo campaign kinda counts for me) I have also backed: Middara Hel: The Last Saga ISS Vanguard Oathsworn Stormsunder Primal: The Awakening 7th Citadel Bardsung My group is almost done with Etherfields (at least wave 1 content that is...) and eagerly waiting on Middara next. I have no clue how I/we will go through all of this list. Especially considering almost all of them are at least gameplay all-ins. And that's in-between semi-regular sessions of Arkham Horror LCG. Through all of this, Oathsworn and Stormsunder are the ones I'm the most excited for. 7th Citadel is also very high up.
Great video Alex. So much overlap; too much... I think you may regret Trudvang - you should have gone for Isofarian instead, which continues to get better through development. We shall see!
Maybe you can cover "FlickFleet: box of flicks 2" in your next "should you back it" video. I know it's a relatively small campaign, but it is already far above it's funding goal and every FlickFleet KS campaign is doing better and better. TLDR: I think FlickFleet is an awesome flicking game (after Crokinole) and maybe more people would like to know ;)
Of this list, there's only three that I didn't get/order. For Gloomhaven, I would play JotL and move Gloomhaven on, especially if Frosthaven is in your list of games to play later. For me, I wouldn't consider Primal a campaign game. It was one of the big negatives that kept me from backing it originally, even though I will likely late pledge when they open their PM.
@@BoardGameCo It's enough to enjoy in a game, but not so much for a campaign game. Dice Throne Adventures has an 8 game series so they can call it a campaign, but I wouldn't call it a campaign game. I would call it one of the funnest games I've played in the last 6 months though. Super fun, just not what I would call a campaign game.
Play Gloomhaven on TTS. With the scripted setup it's much easier en more accesible. We're almost done with all the scenarios. Continued via TTS due to Covid and played around 40/50 scenarios online in sessions around 3 hours (4 players).
So you may have answered this in another video and my apologies if you have. Do you find yourself often playing campaign games like these solo? If so how keep yourself motivated to do so? I have tried to play a board game solo but it just doesn't pull me in. I see board games as a way to have a social experience with friends. I'd love to try and get some of these but heck I can barely get Gloomhaven to the table. The problem of being adults with busy lives.
I think the main difference with you is your primarily a board game player. As a dnd player and a board game player, dnd requires that week to week schedule otherwise it loses its flare because people forget what happened. Like one dnd game I was in was canceled for 2 weeks and people came back and basically forgot what happened last. I apply that to anything that has a continuing story and connecting hours of content and it works. Treating these campaign games like a normal game doesn't work because you need to make a commitment to them. A normal game you come back because their made to have multiple experiences, but a campaign game relies on the experience of the whole campaign.
Can't wait for the Etherfields Wave 2 expansion content. Ran out of that content and am going through Innsmouth Conspiracy cycle of AH LCG and then hoping to pick up the Return to Hoth reprint to play through that. Otherwise I am out of campaigns! :( I need MOAR. Luckily I don't have 24 sitting there. Although I have backed a few of these on this list... so ask me again in a year if I've completed Frosthaven, ISS Vanguard, Primal, 7th Citadel...
Thankfully I don't have nearly as big a problem, ONLY 22 of those games on my list (no USS Freedom or Hate for me). I know they changed it but the whole cosplay angle left me cold. And I just don't know how I would get Hate to the table as a multi-player campaign that plays out in head to head skirmishes; one of the few times logic prevailed. As for the rest, very excited for all of them. Already scoping out the floor space for more piles of boxes.... ran out of shelf space ages ago...
Backed ISS Vanguard.. think it will be great. Backed Bardsung but only got the core.. not sure still if it’s a keeper but love the extra miniatures I’m getting. I Didn’t back Everrain because there was no gameplay info but I’m still following it because I’m still excited about it.
We “completed” gloomhaven. Really liked it, but agree that it’s a huge time investment. I absolutely recommend everyone use the gloomhaven helper app. I really dislike playing board games that have integrated apps, but this one cuts setup by like 50% and makes gameplay much faster. I resisted it for like 20 sessions and after finally giving it a shot, I wouldn’t want to play without it.
We played through JOTL and did the pure experience for 20 of the 25 scenarios. I then started my solo play through and tried gloomhaven helper to not only ease my bookkeeping but ALSO because of limited play space at my house (we played it at my buddies house). I immediately showed my buddies the app and we immediately adopted it. We will also use it for big gloom when we start in October
Well I’ll say I know people in the industry who say wink wink nudge nudge this is “probably” the case. Any mechanics he had a hand in are most likely being redesigned even slightly
I have 9 games on this list, 3 kids under 6, not enough time to play. But middara is hands down the best imo, the rulebook is amazing, combat system etc
So... The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch. A game I've myself never had the opportunity to play, just the opportunity to buy at several times past years. There's so little content on this game out there. Not that many reviews and even fewer gameplay videos. Why is that? I find the theme amazing, and I like the core concepts of the gameplay, but I've been hesitant to buy it since no one really mentions it ever, except you. Please make a video of the game! :) Please tell me more about it!
I only own 1 of these right now. Eventually I'll get 3. It's hard for me to find enough time for 1 so I can't imagine trying to play 24... I didn't think Unsettled was supposed to be a campaign, I thought each game was supposed to be standalone. In fact, on the project page they have "Is this a campaign? No.". Of course each planet is supposed to be extremely different and it will take multiple attempts to win each planet, so in that sense you are "forced" to play a series of games...
I'm retiring in 5 years so have been purchasing epic things that look fun (solo) and putting them away in a big...ok huge!...box for then!
Yes, for me it is next year...
Wait... It fits in a box?
I simoly love that idea
@@JohnHoliver A shipping container is a box right?
Oh man, that looks like such a great prospect! I hope you're going to have many years ahead where you can just enjoy playing games in peace. :)
Yeah, I’m not sure if I’m looking forward to my wife’s face when Oathsworn arrives at my doorstep or terrified. Haha
Same with me :-)
as long as she doesnt see the stretch goal boxes!
The ultimate, neverending resource management campaign is KS itself, and it's a game I can't seem to win (or so my wallet claims).
Ouch, that's good for being on a T-Shirt
Fantastic rundown! A+ content. 24:30 really great point about terrain minis possibly being more of an obstacle than an enhancement.
Yep, for some games they'll enhance, it can just go both ways.
Finished Gloomhaven. Bring on the Frost 🤪
Nice!
How many hours did it take for you to finish it? How many players?
Digital or physical version of the game?
My group has like 7 dreams left of the Wave 1 content (unless there are some hidden gates somewhere, I've riffled through quickly)
We got close to dying exactly once. None of us ever died, we're still not sure what happens if we do. The game has been a breeze and way too easy for us.
@@Amuny666 the punishment is more in terms of repeating content than in sheer difficulty level
@@JM32JM32 Oh, so they reduced the grinding ? Where can I find those rules ?
You define the phrases "new and shiny" and "squirrel". Love how you have all these hopes and dreams to play all the games. There isn't enough hours in the day.
Squirrel!!!
Rest assured, Unsettled is not a campaign game
However, this will not shorten your list, because you've missed Chronicles of Drunagor in the list of games you will soon receive :D
Oh man! How did I miss Chronicles! Major oversight.
24!?!?? Now I don't feel so bad about my dozen or so that have yet to be started!
If I can make you feel better by being a bad example I'll take it :)
To be clear, he had said for AR, don't back 2 wave shipping; I think he meant to say don't back 1 wave shipping. 2 waves means that you will get your game in 2 separate waves, that way you don't have to wait an 2 years for your game.
Yes! That's the one, thanks Chris :)
Unsettled isn't a campaign game as far as I know. It is a survival game you break out, do a planet in a sitting and then next time you can do a different one. To me it makes me think of Robinson Crusoe in space
That would be awesome. Only 23 left.
ISS Vanguard will be my first big campaign game and I can't wait!
It's solid :)
26:25 I love how you justify your behavior by pointing to other bad behavior 😆
Well of course.
You will definitely need more than 2 hours to experience Tainted Grail XD
Yes :-)
I think my wife and I have put in...50hrs so far? Almost finished.
good thing no one mentioned tmnt change is constant, altar quest, batman the animated series, hell boy, dark venture, core space, zombicide undead and alive, freedom five, md2, nemesis 1+2 campaigns, dawn of madness, it's a wonderful world, clank legacy, chronicles of drunagor, aeons trespass odyssey, sleeping gods, burncycle, bloodborne, pandemic legacy season 0 and solomon kane or I might start to worry
Lol many of those I either don't own or I don't consider campaigns. I did miss Chronicles somehow.
@@BoardGameCo that's my backlog.. along with 12 of yours >.>
Same here...many of these won't last, and those that do I've primarily played solo.
Nothing about Aeon Trespass Odyssey ? :D
Where is Aeon Trespass Odyssey? :O
Nothing on Aeon Tresspass: Odyssey? Did you back it?
If you did not complete Jaws of the Lion until now, when the game was still hot, probably you'll never do it unless you stop buying anything else and move to a remote cabin for 1-2 years to go through the backlog.
No aeon trespass odyssey?
Didn't back it :)
@@BoardGameCo you’re forgiven. Lol kiddin. That’s one of my most anticipated 😎
Great take on this subject, as there are a lot of games and everyone likes different things.
Yep :)
It is so easy to back these big campaign games when its years between pledging and it arriving.
Yes! Even now this isn't a problem yet...but it will be.
I love campaign games... I never finish them. It's definitely a problem.
Yes....
Yep....that's a problem for the future we keep telling ourselves.
For the Oathsworn entry, consider going for the retail ( standee) version as it won’t have the same shelf space.
Too late...
@@BoardGameCo We'll make sure to get you the standees as well so you can consolidate and save space :)
@@tobyohara7002 The irony in this :p
So many games ...
Keep Gloomhaven! It is a landmark game. You know how to play it and can pick it up at any time. And is there any game in this genre that is really better? I think not.
Maybe....I really need to play jaws.
@@BoardGameCo Me too.
I've backed or already have 13 of these. And I really will try to play through all of them!
Good luck, we both need it :)
Good to hear, I love hearing different viewpoints on these games.
I guess I'll have to investigate Stormsunder a little more. When the ks was live I remember thinking it looked very standard and by-the-numbers.
Also, one more entry on my personal list will be Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. It's looking like that will be coming out in April.
Oh no...not another.
All I have is Etherfields and Gen 7, as I have worked to not collect campaign games that I will end up not completing.
I wish I had that self control.
@@BoardGameCo Yep, it was absolutely with headphones. Good call!!
Yeah... I am in the same boat of having backed too many games like these... And yet, every time one comes around, it is so hard to resist...
Finally got Etherfields to the table. I'm excited to play more and man the learning curve seems steep...
It's solid :) I want to finish it and move on.
@@BoardGameCo I think that is how I will be too. I want to finish core before the 2nd wave arrives, then I can hurry through the 2nd wave and sell it.
Aeon Trespass Odyssey?
Didn't back that one.
13:40 You said ‘games that will hold their value’ are you buying some of these to make a small profit on the resell? Or do you mean you can open, play, and then resell the content for near the price you paid?
Try and sell. I never buy just to resell (not that I have a problem with it).
I really need to understand how to do this. I always give games I don’t want anymore away. I’ve never done that yet with a Kickstarter game and I don’t want to. You seem so confident about reselling these games. Do you pay the shipping or does the buyer?
@@cfosburg buyer
Gloomhaven is only campaign you'll ever need. It's #1 on BGG for a reason
But I don't want to break it out....
Good thing is people have different preferences. Gloomhaven is a campaign I'm not willing to go back and complete at all. 😆
Hey Alex, like I said before when your schedule opens up I'd be glad to help you play some PvP with us on Arena the Contest /Tanares Adventures. I'm always helping new players or veterans get back into the game. 😃
Let's make something happen :) otherwise I'll keep pushing it off forever :)
Nice! I keep hearing good things.
I'm looking at v Commandos because of a Weekly Quack episode from months ago. You guys had talked about it at length and my husband happened to be listening to the episode with me, and we both thought it sounded like a game we'd love.
And now it's coming to kickstarter. So definitely backing!
I’m 100% getting Middara when it goes on retail at their shop
It looks amazing.
I play Hunters AD 2114 right now and I have to admit, it’s very impressive!
Good to know :)
I watched the whole vid and loved it!
Glad you enjoyed :)
@@BoardGameCo hopefully you got the timing joke and cracked a smile :)
@@BoardGameCo now that it was actually enough time to watch it, one interesting question on my mind in terms of campaign games. as a reviewer, would you think given how crowded the competition for the time is, even for reviewer level of dedication, would first few games experience rated as critically important criteria
i.e. for regular game you can get your money's worth in a few plays. but campaigns ask a lot more and it's normal to not finish them due to many factors, including scheduling.
How many campaign games did you play so far, Alex?
Finished or played?
@@BoardGameCo let's go with played. Might still be in progress, or stopped because you didn't like them, etc, so I wouldn't count just finished ones.
I have no idea where I am going to store oathsworn but if it is even half as good as it looks I think the hassle will be worth it. Also the people behind it are amazing. Great customer service.
Yes! Incredible team :)
You'll get there :)
Oh man, good to hear :)
I missed the KS on that one, which means I‘ll have to pay a fortune to get that game right?
I don't quite have 24 on my list, but I realized we have a lot of crossovers. I was able to resist several of yours and it appears that I went in on some other campaigns that you chose not to. Here are my 17:
1. Tainted Grail - I went all-in on this as well. I personally found this game more satisfying when using the house rule that the Menhirs can see up to 2 spaces away rather than 1.
2. Etherfields - I went all-in on this. I found myself enjoying the game mechanics but the story wasn't captivating so I'll see if I actually go through the wave 2 stuff
Nice :) sleeping gods is tempting me with everything I'm hearing.
Completely agreed, 10-20 hour campaigns I can deal with.
We need a updated all time top list for 2024
Agreed. There’s more not listed here since this video was made. (Isofarian guard, agemonia, sleeping gods both installments, just to name a few).
Plus it’d be nice to see if any were played to completion since this video was made
Outstanding job!!!
I want to back Robinson Crusoe , I love the idea of the book of adventurers but worried it has more content then I can ever possibly play. The only campaign game I have is My City mostly because it was easy to play, get to the table and complete
My City barely counts :)
I'm hoping to jump on primal when the late pledge opens. I resisted through the campaign, but I can't resist anymore.
It's really solid.
7th Citadel and Gloomhaven are the only 2 I have thankfully.
Lucky :)
Passed on nova aetas...too many games already, had to hold back.
Aeons trespass visually didn't pull me in, and nova aetas is just campaign fatigue....didn't pull me in enough to overcome that.
I mostly do these days....
Thanks
iss will, Middara I believe they are opening the pledge manager again between waves but not certain.
Guess we'll see in about 2028, if at all :D
Still, great video! I think it's crazy that 8 plays is in your "played a lot" category while I'd say I haven't really started playing a game under 10 plays. But even with a lot less games competing for my time I still get anxious thinking about Oathsworn, Tanares and Stormsunder heading my way, so I get it.
who knows how it will end up playing with all the changes, but the demos were simple, but the narrative and consequences were fire.
Sorry if that wasn't clear, the track record of how their games sell.

Hel: The Last Saga
ISS Vanguard
Oathsworn
Stormsunder
Primal: The Awakening
7th Citadel
Bardsung
My group is almost done with Etherfields (at least wave 1 content that is...) and eagerly waiting on Middara next.
Uh oh, I do also have cloudspire.

We'll see :) There's always second hand market, nothing is gone forever.
Maybe you can cover "FlickFleet: box of flicks 2" in your next "should you back it" video.
I know it's a relatively small campaign, but it is already far above it's funding goal and every FlickFleet KS campaign is doing better and better.
TLDR: I think FlickFleet is an awesome flicking game (after Crokinole) and maybe more people would like to know ;)
Will add it to my list :)
Interesting, 10-15 missions isn't enough?
So you haven't bakced Frosthaven?
Correct, some self control...
@@BoardGameCo at least it will be the same game in retail for a couple of bucks more you ever feel the need
Mostly but not only solo yes. And different strokes for different folks....I appreciate solo play even if I do prefer group play.
Great video, love listening to your thoughts!! Would love if you got that second channel and grew to get your opinions on these!!
Thanks :)
I bought Gloomhaven a couple of months ago. And I haven't open it. I think it is going to be like that for some more months.
Counted 12 coming to my way out of your list. But Im quite sure I have others that are not in the list xD
Nice :) or not nice....depends on how you look at it
Thankfully I don't have nearly as big a problem, ONLY 22 of those games on my list (no USS Freedom or Hate for me).
I still like Mice & Mystics the best. Great campaign but also satisfying in individual doses
Nice :) never really got pulled in by that one for some reason.
@@BoardGameCo simplicity was key for me, but I can see that if you want an even meatier game it won't get played.
Let’s be clear. CMON is changing Trudvang to avoid paying Lang royalties. I can almost be 100% sure of that
That's an interesting idea
