  • This was the first time I have attempted to make my own fermented nettles as a fertilizer. I followed the step by step method shown on #huwsgarden (link to Huw Richards below) and you can see the results.... This is also called Fermented Plant Juice or FPJ for short. I am hoping to use this on all my No Dig beds as my seedlings are now all ready to plant...... new episode coming shortly
    Julie 🙂❤️🌱

My first try produced the same result so this time I sprayed the nettles very lightly with water- it seems to be working. Dark brown liquid at the bottom of the jar 5 hours after putting it together.

Great tip - yes it did not go well. Will head off to find some more nettles to try again..... thank you , Julie

I'm also adding a little rain water, since then it works fine.😊

Here's what I found works. Chop the nettles up really pretty well as if you were making sauerkraut and you wanted all the surfaces of the plant coated with in this case sugar rather than salt. Use an equal weight (not volume) of sugar and nettles. Massage them together quite thoroughly making sure they sugar is evenly distributed and in contact with all of the exposed surfaces of the plant. Mash it down a bit, cover it completely with a "cap" of brown sugar. Add the stone, the air permeable membrane of tissues or paper towel or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band. Put it someplace with decent airflow and away from any direct sun. It should be done in a week to ten days, that is to say greatly reduced in volume and with some liquid showing at the bottom. Longer than that and you may lose some to evaporation and mold. It'll be a lot more liquid in there then it looks.

Could you not put some rain water in the jar?? Going to give it a go as well 👍👍

I was thinking a tiny bit just to get the fermentation process going but the sugar is supposed to draw the juice out of the nettles - might be duff nettles 😕

This is what I noticed: Your nettles look to already be flowering which means that you likely harvested later in the season and likely would be drier plant matter -early spring when they are fresh and juicy is best and then processing quickly to avoid the air drying them further is ideal, if they feel or look dry - a mist of rain water or distilled water just to moisten them while kneading the brown sugar in to the leaves would assuredly help.
Also, we’re they left to ferment in a warm (70*) DARK area?
The fermentation process should only take 6-7 days if done correctly. Two weeks would likely ensure mold because the plant matter has oxygen exposed to it.
I encourage you to try again! Once it is strained and free of any leaf and stems and in a sealed jar, it will be shelf stable.
