Just now watching this vid. No need to apologize for any of your implement purchases Tim. This is still America LOL. I for one enjoy watching new things and how they work or not work. Keep up the good work and great content. God bless.
Tim enjoyed the planter putting the seed in the soil. The anticipation of how long it will take to come up, and the joy of seeing the first shoots breaking the soil surface has alway been a treet that I never tire of. Thank you and your wife for the happy memories.
I tell ya Tim in my opinion the planting tec. of that era of planters is the best. We have a six row and we always get a great stand. I'm very impressed with that tagline tiller it looks like a beast. I think your dirt perfect for planting, I like it when it's like walking on the moon. You did right by being patient.
You have great soil Tim. Here where I live it's clay unless you are in bottom land. When we farmed we plowed in the fall and used a disc harrow in the spring. My grandfather had a saying that if you plowed wet ground in the spring you would roll clods the rest of the year. He was right. Now everyone no-till's. I've found out that with our clay you can roto-till the soil too fine and the ground will crust over impeding the seed coming up. Thanks for your videos. I appreciate really them.

Just need to do a ribbon test. Get soil, moisten (like you said), roll it into a ball, then press it with your index finger and thumb into a ribbon. If the ribbon gets more than about 2ish inches it’s pretty high clay content. If you drag your thumb on the ribbon after you make it and it’s shiny, it’s clay and if it’s feathery looking it’s more so a clay-loam.

Yep. Same. We don’t typically show spraying our sweet corn as the crazies come out in force when they see you spraying roundup on something you will eat. …easiest to simply avoid that.
I plant usually 10+ rows of sweet corn - each row is about 60 feet long. I use an earthway-precision-garden-seeder. Rows can be spaced to 30+ inches and I can plant all the rows in about five minutes. For those who want a good planter and save some money consider those - about $125... The soil you have there sure looks heavy. Best wishes on a good harvest, Tim...
I am not happy with the results from the earth way planter. 1) it does not do a good job of seed placement. You may get 0,1,2 or 3 seeds in each ‘cup’ in the plate. 2) there is no way to change the population. 3) the wimpy ‘chain’ is useless as a covering implement. Probably the best you can do for $100, but not very impressive.

Happy Birthday Tim, been enjoying your channel for years and have learned so much. Tell Kristy for me you can have as many cheeseburgers as you want on your birthday. God bless you both!
On 30 inch rows it is super easy to figure out spacing... to count final population once the corn is up and out of the ground you measure out 17'6" and count the plants and multiply by 1000 to get the final stand population. so the same can be done in the other direction.
Try to adjust your 3 point hitch lowering speed under your seat, might help to keep the tiller from going up and down with the tractor. Thanks for all your hard work Tim.

Tim, would you recommend a 1 or 2 series for a hilly forested area? That planter uses the same JD Tru-Vee row unit as my 4 row 7000 from 1979. In fact, it looks like they just took a 7000 and cut both left row units and the outer right row unit off. Guess it just goes to show you, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The planter is nice and not overkill because it's tough and precise. I don't agree with the tiller usage for seedbed preparation. It dries the soil quite a lot. Happy BD Tim! Looks like that soil needs more composted material & some sand. Save all those leaves & grass clippings you get from the vacuum system that you have & spread them out on there in the fall.
Farmers put nitrogen on during planting as a pre-emerge fertilizer then side dress when the corn reaches the proper growth stage when the corn needs the nitrogen the most. Nitrogen is highly mobile in the soil so it’s best to wait because if you you apply it all now everything the newly germinated corn can’t use will wash through the soil column and no longer be available when it needs it (coming from someone who lives on a 2300 acre corn and soybean farm and has a bachelors in agriculture (mix of agronomy and at business)).
Tim...when I'm rototilling it seems to put a lot of "fluff" in the ground, opposed to discing. I like to cultipack prior to planting. You can find old pull type cultipackers relatively inexpensive. I pull my 8' with a UTV.
I just bought a 3043 (2022 Deere) and I'm going crazy with brush hog and whatever. I want to plant some popcorn and so I love your video. I a middle buster and a small disc harrow and can borrow a tiller. I have a question, you mentioned your seed being roundup ready. do you do some herbicide treatment before or after planting? didn't really see anything in the video and so, if so, what, and when? TIA. I subscribed. thanks, Chuck
I wait until the corn (and weeds) are up a few inches, then hit with roundup. One more roundup application just before tasseling….and call it good. Not sure if you can get roundup ready popcorn….but I suspect you can.
Do you put 540 at the PTO for your tiller or is it different if that’s a silly question. Because we have one which takes 540 and one huge one that takes 1000
Hello, love your videos is the soil warm enough where you live right now. Here in western pa we don’t plant till around Memorial Day give or take week or two and I live around lots of dairy farms so I just wait till I see them planting. Also kudos to you a the planter I’m the same way I actually have a two row Massey Ferguson corn planter with the fertilizer box for side dressing. It does a great job and I only plant like 6 rows of sweet corn also. I do plant some field corn for the deer here like maybe 2ac I also get the looks using the planter in our garden but like you I love it. I grew up around ag farming. I love tilling up the land and planting even though I’m little land owner . Ok keep up the great videos I hope to meet you guys some day maybe at a farm show take care. Chad PS it great to see some one else digging up seed after planting I do the same thing to make sure its doing well ok good day!
can u adjust the machine how far and close when the seed drops each one? Can u give me some advice...how deep to plant the seeds and how far apart each seed drops to be the best ?
For seed ‘population’, you want probably 25,000 kernels per acre. This will be different distance apart depending on your row width. We usually use 36” rows. There are charts online to show appropriate distance between seeds for 25,000 kernels at different row widths. Google it.

Happy Birthday! I'm still waiting for my garden to dry out enough. The lower end of mine looks like a little pond right now :/
Thanks Tim, another great video
Might try putting a little gypsum on the garden to see if it will help it to break up better.
I have about the same tractor, my rear stabilizers loosen up all the time there’s a jam nut but it don’t work
There are wires which can be loops over the turnbuckle to prevent them from vibrating and rotating on their own.
Great video Tim happy birthday have a great day be safe and stay healthy.
Good stuff! Thank you. Love the nosy cats😂
Do you put 540 at the PTO for your tiller or is it different if that’s a silly question. Because we have one which takes 540 and one huge one that takes 1000
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tim!
Google it.
is that a quick attach for the fel that i saw at 7:30?
Make sure you plant enough for the critters too. Hope your dad is doing well. Wish I was there to help. Your friend from NW Indiana.
Hey we’ll keep them critters out with our electric fence.
My first act as king will be to outlaw turnbuckle stabilizers, even on little tractors. They'll come with a mandatory life sentence.
Vinnie with the Air-o-vator to fine tune the top layer of soil?
Seeing the size of your garden and thinking about how mine is slightly larger and I use a push tiller and plant all by hand. Maybe someday though😂
