    good morning sir. thank you so much for this video I had forgotten where to place the threads to secure them. I purchased some single ply strong yarn from Turkish spinners many years ago and have been wondering how to use it. So through your instruction I am going to weave some bands for my dogs bed to help support her. It is a bed made with a metal frame and canvas that sags in the middle when she hops on it so me thinks!!! that these bands stitched with linen thread under the frame will give her support.hurrah!

    Thank you for your effort in making this video. It is much clearer than the videos provided by actual sellers. I have the book mentioned in the comments below so I will see if my husband is willing to make one for me. I was thinking of weaving some tote bags for future gifts and thought maybe this would make great handles.

    Andy, you're the man! I'm not nearly patient enough to take up weaving. I admire the way you alternated the gorgeous colors. The red, green and yellow are (literally) outstanding colors! When you say "advance the warp," I can't help thinking of Captain Kirk shouting out that order. When you say, "twisted fringe," I think you're speaking of me! LOL! In the end, the scarf was absolutely beautiful! You did a wonderful job! Congratulations on your achievement! Your time at weaving school was well spent my friend!

      Thanks a lot John, I do so enjoy creating new designs. Although I may be the one on the far twisted fringe of reality to spend my hours doing things like this, maybe I'm even the one who is warped. But it is so much fun playing with the colors.

    It just makes so much more sense to put the inkle loom on its side when you are warping it!
    PS. I think you are weaving a wide Crios. Except they would often use a differrent colour weft, to have the dots along the side of the belt. They are very comfortable to wear, and very Irish.

    Hi Andy! You’re fantastic! Your homemade inkle loom is way better than the commercial brands being sold. I want to learn how to weave on one but one of the major things I’ve noticed is they can’t really make anything wider than 2” and yet you can make something much wider. Where did you find the plans to make yours? I’ve searched and I may not be tech savvy enough to find something to suit what I want to make. I admit I’m no carpenter and will most likely have to bribe someone to make it for me but at least I think I would have something more to my liking. Can you help? Thanks again for sharing your love for all things woven with love!

  • @movourneen

    Thanks, very informative. Few questions - do you like this type of tension bar verses the round dowel type? It seems the scarf is dense and may not drape well - how is it for drape? I like your color combinations. Also, the pegs on the end for holding your threads until ready to tie off is a great idea.

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do like the bar versus dowel for tensioning, as I can turn it and get just a little bit tighter tension. You are correct that these don't drape as well, that is partly because of the inexpensive yarn that I used, and partly because I weave so tightly. I made two of these scarfs, different colors, only showed one in video. The young ladies to whom I gave them were very happy with them, although I believe they will use them as sashes tied around their waists when wearing 18th century re-enacting garments, in which case the drape will not be much of an issue.
      Thanks for watching, and commenting.

    Great video! I don't suppose you have plans for your loom (or plan on dedicating a video on it)? I know there are lots of designs out there but your one in particular seems well thought out.

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do have the original plans, they were published in the book "Inkle Weaving" by Helene Bress, copyright 1975 & 1990. I can not republish them because of the copyright. I found her plans good except that the upright supports were not strong enough, so I had to improve on those slightly.
      However, most inkle looms are very simple, and I suggest that a good wood worker should be able to make a loom without too much trouble.
      Good luck to you on making your own loom (or buying one if you so desire) and Happy Weaving!

    • @curmudgeon66

      Thanks - No I am quite content with the shed and the length of the loom, and also the length of the warp. If you notice I put a 2nd pointy stick in to hold my shed open for the shuttle. Any longer a loom and I would have a hard time reaching to advance the warp.

    You can crochet stitch two half’s together to make a wider scarf and still be about 4 feet long

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you could, but since don't crochet that is not an option for me. Besides the young lady to whom I gave this uses it as a sash when she is doing her18th century reenacting.

    Hi, and thanks for another great video. Can you recommend a book or otherwise way to find a pattern to make an inkle loom?

    • @curmudgeon66
      @curmudgeon66  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The book that I used is from 1975 and out of print, amazon sells it used (if they have it at all) for $43 and up. Way to steep. The name is "Inkle Weaving" by Helene Bress, I paid 19.95 about 25 yrs ago for my copy. There are a couple videos of making inkle looms, the one by WildernessOutfitters ( th-cam.com/video/bMUxG4W4_tM/w-d-xo.html ) is a bit crude, IMHO, and the one by Maker Mauz ( th-cam.com/video/PwGaCFDHHxA/w-d-xo.html ) is in German (but does have english subtitles courtesy of Google Translate. I know that there are other patterns available on the internet, but I have not done much research on them.
      This web site looks pretty interesting: makezine.com/2011/09/29/how_to_build_an_inkle_loom/
      or this might work pretty slick: www.illuminatedspaces.com/cts/weaving/pvcinkleloomplans.pdf
      My loom was from the plans in the Helene Bress book.
      Good Luck!

      I've made that mistake of putting the heddles on the wrong "layer" of threads too, but it has been a while since last I did that. Just take it easy and the more you do this, the sooner you will get to doing it consistently using the top layer for the heddles.
