Learn how to create a gorgeous trim, strap or belt with the ancient craft of tablet weaving.
The threading for the cards if you want to follow along is:
S threaded cards:
Card 1 - Blue - A and D. White- B and C.
Card 2 - Blue - A and B. White - C and D

I followed the setting up for cards 1-2-3 but you did not show no. 4 I assumed 5-6-7-8 area mirror of the first 4
Hi Jim - yes, you're right - the threading for the cards (and I'll pin this so people can find the full threading list easily) is:
S threaded cards:

The cardboard coasters from bars, work just as well, and if you ask nicely, sometimes you can get a stack of them for nothing.

I would just use my shuttle to “beat” down the shed, as there’s less friction on the warp which causes less pilling and your not having to slide the cards up and down all the time. Quicker process and progress. Also, use lollipop sticks in a couple of sheds to give you something to beat up to, makes a neater start. X
Yes, since filming this, I've learnt the lollipop stick trick too! I also beat with the shuttle now too - just the shuttle I was using there was a bit too unwieldy. I have done a second part to this video now, but I really need to film a completely new version since I've changed some of my methods. xx

WOW - this is very time consuming setting up just 8 cards like this - I was curious about how this is done, but after watching how you do it, I don't think I am very interested in actually doing it - Thanks for taking the time to show how it is done
It is time consuming, you're right! One reason I don't do it very often! Glad I could satisfy your curiosity, though!
I just cut my own cards and got started within about 2 hours and then the project builds up pretty fast - not that you should do it just fyi
What craft doesn't take time to set up.
Don't forget that this was being shown done slowly so we could see what was being done, and was being described at the same time which uses the other side of your brain so your hands don't work as fast - that's why it's really difficult to write or draw and speak at the same time. Every new skill is slow to start with but gets faster with practice. Compared to setting up a floor loom which can takes days, this is very quick - everything is relative.
My main skill is as a lace maker and teacher; setting up 32 threads for tablet weaving is faster than winding 32 bobbins and making a pricked pattern, and the braid grows more quickly weaving with tablets than weaving one on a lace pillow (yes, bobbin lace is only off-loom weaving).
I wonder what crafts you do where you'd bother to watch this sort of video, but then (maybe sensibly) decide it's too slow for you.

Hehe! It's super fun, Eruanne! And you can, all you need is a pack of playing cards, a hole punch and some wool. :D You don;t need to splash out on the plywood cards yet. (although super cheap ones are available on amazon!)
If you put nonslip drawer liner under your loom, it will help your loom stay in place.
To stop your loom slipping about and spoiling your table, I suggest you use a gripper mat. They're easily found in most cheapy shops.
Also, that shuttle looks so awkward and slow. . Try using a small piece of cardboard.
It's not a good idea to keep pushing and pulling the cards up and down the warp, it wears it out. Just run your fingers between the threads to open up the shed.

Hehe - you may have noticed this was posted 5 years ago. I've learned a lot since then, though I've stopped making videos. :D But thank you for taking the time to comment some helpful tips - hopefully people who find this video now will pick up some advice from that too.

Have you thought to use your shuttle as your beater? It would probably be easier and reduce wear and tear on your cards. It will also be easier as you start to increase the number of cards you use.

Hi! Thanks for a great video. I am running into an issue I don't quite understand. I am pretty sure I do the S and Z right, I put the cards in the right order facing left, start with AD on top. Yet for some mysterious reason, my pattern end up on the underside and not so I can see it while weaving. Any idea where I get it wrong?
Or, do you say initially that s threading is from back to front, but when you thread it, you go front to back? Cause when I followed along with you, I got it right. Then I did another and I just rewatched your first explanation before actually doing it, and then is when I got it wrong. I tried another pattern, same method, wrong again. I'm just really puzzled! :)
can you show the chart you are using? I would like to give it a try but could not find the same pattern on line. The only one I found used three colors, 8 cards, and said the turning sequence was all forward. (Not sure what all forward is). Thank you.
Hi Wayne, thanks for the question! I'll try and help - actually, I plan on doing a tablet weaving livestream very soon (some time this evening!) to show a basic weave and answer questions then. I made the pattern up myself, but I'll pop it up during the livestream so you can see it - I don't have it to hand right now! Also, all forward basically means turning the cards all in one direction. It's a very simple method, means you don;t have to remember how many turns you've made, but it also builds up a lot of twist which can be a real pain to deal with.

I am learning how to card weaving but the only problem Miami I am having it once I put my cards on and I start my yarn above my cards and my ankle loom get all twisted up what am I doing wrong can you help me
Hi Trina - yes, you're setting up your loom backwards. Start your yarn below your cards, not above. Your yarn will twist no matter what you do - remember to change direction every so often to avoid twist buildup. I'm going to do another video shortly that might help.

How do I keep the yarn from turning into a massive tangled mess on the ends
Hi, ladywolfe- with difficulty! There are a couple of methods - first, you see how I have mine wrapped around my loom? That prevents additional twist travelling down the rest of the wool and tangling up. The second thing is to make sure you do the same number of forward and reverse turns - note I was doing 4 forwards, 4 backwards? That not only formed the diamond pattern, but made sure I didn’t get twist. If you still get twist, there’s only two other things you can do - flip the cards over, which is an advanced method as it changes the pattern you’re working, (it essentially is the same as doing reversals though) or stop every so often and unravel!

I don't know if it is just my computer, but I often find -- and this is the case here -- that I have a great deal of trouble hearing what is being said. Now, I realize that most regular video cameras used by non-professionals have a built-in microphone, and thus the person who is best heard is the person holding the video camera, but I am also fairly sure an inexpensive microphone can be purchased at a Radio Shack and make all the difference in the world. It is kind of maddening not to be able to hear what is being said because my heat just came on, or because I turn a fan on, or because any other sound of any kind whatsoever will completely overcome the audio from the speaker in this video. Maddening.
Thanks for the comment, Ellen! I'm sorry you have trouble hearing me - I actually use an external mic, one of the best on the market (a Blue Yeti). There's not a lot I can do if your PC drops the levels on the sound. I also don't want to blast the ears of any of my watchers who choose to use high quality speakers or headphones - may I suggest investing in some decent Sennheiser headphones?
If you are listening to anything at a comfortable volume and then you choose to switch a fan on, you're not going to hear sound properly anymore. Don't blame the person who is kind enough to do all that work to explain things to us for noises at your end. Even the cheapest little earbud headphones (like you get with a phone) will solve the problem.
What would you call the type of loom you are using?
Hi Audrey, I'd call it a version of the Oseberg loom, but more portable. It doesn't really have a name, it's one my dad made for me based of photos of the Oseberg and rigid heddle looms, so it's kind of a mix between the two. You don;t really need a loom to start tablet weaving, you can tie your loose ends to a chair or table leg. I was doing this at a medieval reenactment one day, and all I had was a metal pole in the ground, so I was using that. I had a young boy come up and ask why I was tied to that post.... heh!
Maybe it's my ADHD but I keep missing which part is the 2m thread... is it the shuttle or the threads attached to the cards? Do they need to me 2m when halved to go around or just one way?
Hey, no worries - I'm using 2m for each thread that goes through the cards. (Each strand is 2m in total) It doesn't have to be 2m - I'm working a 14th century belt here, which is a long piece, so my threads are long. The best way to measure how long you want your threads to be is to determine the length of your finished project, then add a few inches for luck. You can always trim off excess, but it's hard to add more! When it comes to the shuttle, though it doesn't matter how much you wrap around that, as long as it can pass through the threads easily. If you run out of yarn on your shuttle, you can wind more onto it, and carry on weaving.
@@Elfdaughter thank you! Set up my first piece this evening and seeing if I can get a couple rows in before bed! It's woefully uneven and I have no clue how to set tension but I think I got something workable

How long should a tablet woven belt be?
As long as you need, and also how you want to tie it. Remember, weave more than you think you need - you can always cut some off and hem it.
Great tutorial, but still confused about S/Z . At first you say "S is threaded from Back to front" but when you started threading, you threaded "S" from Front to back....eeeeek :) please help
I mispoke! I was actully threading back to front, but I'd turned the cards round as that was the easiest way for me to view them. Basically, an S thread looks like an S if you look at the card from the top, and a Z thread looks like a Z. Or, if it makes it easier to visualise, think of a dollar sign $ - the vertical line or the dollar sign is the card, anmd the S part of the symbol is how the thread should look from the top. Then reverse that for the Z cards. I hope that makes it a bit clearer?
I have recently developed the Dragon Heads I designed in Z and S Twill with 92 Weaving Tablets with three meter long cotton threads - until yesterday I have the Dragon Heads in Z - twill with 30 Weaving Tablets with three meter long cotton threads - everything is parallel for me and curious with a ratchet strap - I miss the words - I am shocked by the video

The super-simple pattern I got to try at Lofotr when I was 12 had four cards. The ribbon I wove in typical knitting-size yarn ended up about 1 cm wide.
