  • This is a tour of my home made Inkle Loom and how I made a set of garters for my historic reenacting kit.
    Good Morning! The approximate dimensions of the loom are:
    length: 72cm
    height: 32 cm
    pins: 13 cm
    tent fit: 13cm
    top plug - hedge plug 18 cm
    space between erect sections 20 cm
    I did not use any measured blueprint to build this loom.

      Thanks for watching. What historical era do you reenact and where? I belong to a group that portrays a French camp during the F&I War (1750s). We travel from Fort Niagara NY to Fortress Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. It's reenacting that got me involved in the inkle loom to begin with.

      g'day, sorry for the delay in replying. I am part of a couple of re-enacting groups. The first group I was involved in was an English Civil War group 17th century, then my daughter dragged me into a 14th century group she is part of and I'm also part of another group that covers different times, but represents the importance of the horse during history. I also hand make outfits for friends who are re-enacting Romanian history (Dracula,the real story, plus lots of other parts of 15th century history). So, inkle loom weaving is a great option. I will make a box loom as well (as they are at least historically accurate to use at events). Thanks again for your amazing video. oops, before I go, I'm based in South East Queensland, Australia

    Very thorough and not too long at all. The only thing you did not cover is the length of the shuttle yarns and how you would determine that on different looms. Please add that to your post. Looking forward to making trim for my dress. Play in the SCA as a 1098 Irish widow. The Inkle is not "period," a backstrap loom would have been used, but we all use the Inkle due to comfort and portability. I agree with your assessment of it needing maybe another 10 inches for longer weaving area, but as it is, the loom is actually more portable and it really is not that difficult to advance the yarn. Subscribed, thank you.

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my video.Regarding the amount of yarn on the shuttle: The amount is whatever your feel comfortable passing through the shed. Obviously, a longer shuttle could hold more yarn. Because splicing in a new strand is so easy to do, the amount on the shuttle is not critically important. That's why I didn't mention it in the video, but you are correct... I should have at least mentioned it.
      Thanks for the feedback.

      @@Denb7 Guess I did not make myself clear. I was asking about the loops used on every.other string. How do you determine the length of them to hold the yarn at the correct distance to be able to have sufficient shed space above and below? I would also like to know the approximate size of your beater please. Thank you for responding so quickly.

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marcellespeake4272 Ah! The loops you are referring to are called 'heddles'. The way I make mine so they are uniform in size is, I tie them around two of the loom's pegs. The first peg is the one that the heddles are connected to as shown in the video (the heddle peg) and the second one is the peg at the top of the shed (the one that the heddle threads go over). The reason I use these 2 pegs is so the heddles hold the threads approximately half the distance between the 2 pegs when installed. Because I made my loom with no measured blueprints, I just got lucky on the heddle peg location.
      I use a nylon because it's less stretchy than yarn, but anything can be a heddle. I triple knot my heddles so they don't come untied. (It's a pain in the butt to replace a broken heddle in the middle of a project.)
      The beater is about 6 inches in length. My shuttle and beater were made from a broken bamboo cutting board. Some weavers use their shuttles to tighten their work.

    I too have an inkle loom. I have it warped with 100% cotton carpet warp. I am finding it impossible to advance the carpet warp on the loom after loosing the tension. Did you pretreat your pegs in order to be able to advance the warp as smoothly and easily as you do in the video?

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing I did to my pegs was to polyurethane and sand them smooth. When I advance the warp, I ease the tension, then I usually pull the warp from two locations at the same time. I am sure to pull in opposite directions. So My latest weaving I pull towards me, while somewhere in the middle of the pegs, I pull the warp away from me. You'll need to follow the path of the warp to determine what direction is should be moved.
      Good luck.

    • @Denb7

      That video shows practically the first thing I ever made on my loom. I have no idea what you mean by "wet finish" and found no need to use any stitching, but that doesn't mean that other techniques can't be employed.
      I have friends who weave on inkle looms, and they set up their looms almost backwards from the way I demonstrated here, but they do beautiful work.

    • @hillockfarm8404
      @hillockfarm8404 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need that pole to adjust tension, weaving shortens your warp. Also if you make the distance between the tension peg and the heddle peg to long you cannot reach behind the heddle peg to create the shed that your shuttle passes through. The distance between the 2 is limited by the length of the users arm.

    Sorry but you stand in front of the camera just when you are starting the warp threads. ...does it matter which you go over or under? are any of the pegs critical to go over or under? How is the shortest / longest warp made? i want to start with the shortest since this is my first. I have a purchased loom with a different number of pegs so it is hard to relate to how you are warping....which to skip, which to wrap. thx!

    Hi, thank you for a clear and concise inkle loom video. I've been watching all I can find, while I figured out the getting/making of an inkle loom with almost no budget, and no tools or workspace.
    I've almost got that squared away now (just need to re-glue a few pegs), and noticed that when you're threading your warp, you tie the knots of your old/new threads at the peg before the Start Peg. Other videos I've seen, the knots are tied at the Start Peg.
    So, I wondered if you tied yours differently for a specific reason/advantage to the weaving, or just because you like to tie there. Thank you for your time.

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I consider the adjustable peg to be the start. I like to have several inches of yarn before the beginning and after the end so I can braid some tails if I want. I know several weavers who warp their yarn completely backwards from what I do. And I've seen others who don't tie ends and instead wait until the whole loom is warped up. I also know some who put on the heddles after the warp is done.
      I don't know if there's a wrong way to do it.

    • @sjrSpike
      @sjrSpike 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Denb7 No, no wrong ways at all. Just different, to solve your needs best for you.
      I hadn't considered getting the beginning fringe length in this way. Most of the videos I've watched have put warp separator (cardboard) in the different sheds, starting at the start peg, usually 2 or 3, for however long they need for their fringe, before they start weaving.
      I'll have to try both methods and see which suits me best.
      Thank you again for a great video.

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I looked at photos of the commercially available looms, estimated a few dimensions and built it. I later discovered that I wanted longer weaves than the maximum my loom was capable of making so I modified it with two extra dowel pegs which is what you see in the video. .
      I suggest you search for images of inkle looms before settling on a design because there are many variations and sizes. My next design will likely be slightly taller and have the warp threads arranged in a vertical orientation. I want a larger working area because this loom gives me about 3 or 4 inches before I need to advance the warp.
      Good luck!

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! I'm a terrible cheapskate, far too frugal to pay for a high quality commercially made loom. I saw a picture of an inkle loom online and just built what I saw. I used very few measurements and made it from scrap lumber and dowels I had lying around in my wood shop. I needed to buy the "rail bolt" and a washer at Home Depot at a cost of $1.37. So I call my loom, "my $1.37 loom."
      Since building it, I have needed to reinforce a couple of the screws that hold the dowels in place. The tension on the band was bending the dowels inward and the warps would slide off. Luckily, I already had some sturdier bolts. I'd hate to spend more on this loom.
      You can go to my TH-cam channel and see my cheapskate videos. "The cheapskates guide to free deodorant," is a popular one.

    • @Denb7
      @Denb7  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry to say, but no pattern was used. I basically did everything by eye, no measuring or anything. The one issue I'm having with this loom is because of the tension on the pegs, they are now bending the screws that hold them in place. The result is that the warp strands are constantly sliding off the pegs. I did bore recessed holes to prevent them from sliding, but the holes are only 1/8" deep. I should have used thicker wood on the frame and drilled deeper holes that would add support to the pegs.
      It was basically an experiment and I built it to be as compact as possible. I used all scrap wood and materials. My next loom will be better built!
