Sailing alone up a windy shallow river in Panama. Quite the adventure! - UNTIE THE LINES III #48

  • I solo sail from Costa Rica to Panama and take on the epic adventure of navigating up a windy, shallow and quite remote river upon my arrival in Panama. My depth sounder has seen bigger numbers for sure, charts are incorrect and I have to be on my toes not to ground my sailboat on a riverbank.
The return to Panama lays a little heavy on my heart...but at least, Panama still has spots for me to discover, which always makes returning not quite so bad ;).
It's time for family again, our full movie-length documentary has to be released and I promised Maria to help her with her charters for the 2018 season. Check out sailjoana.com if you want to come and visit up on board Joana.
I hope you enjoy the last episode of this season. Thanks to Daniel and Patrice who put so much work into producing this season and who always miracously manage to makes something pretty from the data chaos that I send them. And a big thanks to all of you! For laughing and crying with me, for sending all those warm words my way and for your great advise and sometimes enligthning criticism you give me.
This season has definitely been too short (that's how it felt to me at least), but one good thing about the time delay betwween filming and publishing is: It's nearly time to return to Karl in real time :)!!!
    Ahoy & Enjoy,
    Nike & Karl

Thank you for writing back to me. I was presently surprised. Watching you videos, remindid me how little I've seen of my planet. I never tought of visiting Panama. It's a lot more beautiful than I imagined. When you decide to cross the Pacific, if you stay out of the shiping lanes ( I call it: taking the scenic route) you should have no problems. Have more time to sleep and recuperate. I could go on and on. It's a big decision, the first time I had butterflies in my stomach. I see it as cutting the ombilical cord wich is never easy. But the rewards in self esteem and self confidence are well worth it. You can always aks for tips on how to cross to others who have done it before. Can't wait to see your next videos. All my best ...Patrick

Just found your channel a couple of days ago and binge watched every episode! I am enjoying living vicariously through your adventure. Both you and Karl have been growing in strength and dependability with each project and experience.
You made good decisions to pull the boat and fix the hull, get new sails and motor. You obviously know every inch of the boat now. Thanks for all the hard work on the videos! I know how much work they are... can't imagine doing them in the environment you are in!

I just finished watching all of the Untie the Lines videos from the beginning. You are an extraordinary person who has had some amazing adventures. I have watched all your videos from start to finish over the last few weeks. I am so impressed with you Nike. As someone who remodels homes and restore vintage engine I am totally amazed at your determination and skill set. Yes not getting across the Pacific yet is a bummer but you have done soooooo much and you should be proud of that. In three years you have accomplished more then most people dream of. I have gotten the itch to buy a boat myself and do what you are doing. I just hope when that day comes I will have your determination, patience, persistence, and drive. Not to mention your appetite for adventure. And I also have to mention that I am very impressed with your filming. A lot of sailing channels concentrate on very little sailing and a lot of partying. So much different from you. Sail on girl and keep living the dream. I will be watching your videos over again just to get more inspired.

Well Just finished all 48 installments, goodness .You have done well "grasshopper" keep up the good work,I am was wondering,( was looking at your tiller handle) I mess around with wood a bit,and have a few work tables made of Oak Pecan and some ash, I use "Tung Oil"( a little pricey now) on the wood seems to hold up well, one work table I have is about 50 years old the one out of Oak,and has been left out doors a number of times for long periods form time to time, they are used for every thing from rebuilding engines to electrical work, use a little oil every so often to keep em smooth as a"baby's butt"Don't know about sailboats that much, but have used it on power boats when I was in the business back when I was younger.I am retired now for the last almost 15 years, was a Airframe/Powerplant mechanic/pilot don't do that any more don't have the ratings.pushing the late late 70s,but wish I had done what you do back in the day.You keep up the good work,be good and do good, tell your "bud' Marie (the one that did the welding, good hand) hello from this old cajun ya'll be careful out there....God Speed...

Just read your Facebook post about not achieving much... No ocean crossing and so on.... The re-power project was so much cooler! You get a big confidence boost from stuff like that. If you can overcome a disaster like that there is nothing much that you can not do . And no matter where you go you are bound to run in to wonderful people. I quit my job and sold my house in April this year and am currently working on my 41ft Steel ketch in the Netherlands. Even on the hard my neighbors have the coolest stories and good advice..... Haven't sailed at all jet and loving every moment.

Nike, you have convinced me that if I ever decide to head out to do some blue water sailing I will choose a boat like a Southerly or Alubat, both with swinging fin keels that provide for minimal draft when sailing in shallow areas. You must be exhausted from sailing in such shallow waters.

Just a tip about driving screws into wood. Always keep a little jar of standard petroleum jelly(vaseline) onboard. Just touch the tip of the wooden screws in vaseline before driving them in. Two fold, keep moisture away but primary purpose is to lubricate the screw while driving them in. No more stripped flat or star tip points on your electric screwdriver.

Forward scanning sonar $700 US for thru-hull transducer and displays on your monitor with existing electronics. 15 metre to 200 metre forward underwater scanning and mapping sonar.. Your aluminum hull may make it easy for mounting the transducer appropriately. A handy accessory for river deltas where sandbars shift or anywhere shallow.

When you describe the feelings of Karl as you leave him alone, I get flash backs of Wilson the soccer ball from the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks. Somehow I think you need to involve yourself with a little bit more human interaction....Lol. I see a ring on your wedding finger, but have not heard you say anything about why you wear it. Can you tell us the story about the meaning behind it if that's not to forward of me? Love watching your videos. Cheers! :-)

Chris Gonzales I had asked her about the ring in a previous episode. She said it's made of wood and I don't recall where she got it but she just liked it and now wears it. She also said that she doesn't have a significant other.

Hi Ruthie, I just got back to Karl about three weeks ago and today I started sorting the data for the first episodes of Season IV. It's all not quite sure yet, but we hope to be back online with video updates in four months from now. I hope you will come back when it's time to Untie The Lines again. You can follow real time updates on facebook.com/whitespotpirates and www.instagramc.com/whitespotpirates in the meantime, if you like.
