All your points about the 2zz make practical sense. Just refresh the engine inc rings and bearings despite the condition of the current ones. It's cheap insurance. Keep up the good work!
Thanks mate, i'll see how i go, once a head comes off it all starts getting even more time consuming and expensive, so i'll check out the main and big end bearings, if they look fine, i'll just send it with new seals and gaskets. There is a fair chance this engine may come back out in the future anyway so i can put an lsd in it, so if i find it's lacking i can do a rebuild at the same time :)
haha, I think I guessed K swap a month or so ago, you did end up with some flavour of variable lift in the end! I think keeping it in the toyota family is a nice touch. Good on you for doing what works for you too man. So many people unknowingly make decisions based on external influence, good on ya for doing what makes most sense for what you want and what will make you happy. Looking forward to seeing this all happen!
@@meyada.mx5 I appreciate it mate! Yeah at the end of the day once the videos have all blown over and no one cares I'll still be driving the car and I want it to be something that genuinely makes me smile :) Appreciate you watching!
@@TheNuggetProject It's like me with my mx5. Everyone's like "get coilovers, get an exhaust' etc. but I'm built for 'standard' class in the club competition and I'm having an absolute blast chasing class lap times and actually learning how to drive faster. It certainly makes the road trips to and from the tracks in the car tolerable too.
@@TheNuggetProject Hell yeah boys!!! such an underrated engine with incredible potential. We'd be happy to compare notes especially around the c60 trans rebuild. Our car is based off the NFSU Celica. Great choice of engine I think !!! If you need the head ported or matched ported intake and exhaust manifold happy to donate to the build mate !!! 😜👍🇦🇺
Look into porting and polishing the intake manifold and exhaust manifold/header. Some people have gotten some pretty hefty gains out of it. In the states the exhaust manifold had some restrictions near the flange. Not sure if it's the same for the AU model.
Careful with the billet oil pump gears. I got a set from Boundary and it had the wrong clearances so it shattered after a few minutes of idling. The common knowledge is that the factory gears are good unless over-revving.
So the dash will actually work, it has an analog Speedo but I've already got a gear for the c60 gearbox so that will work and the rest is digital and will work with some minor wiring works :)
Gonna be sooooo cool! Also food for thought, once its rego we could comvert to fbw throttle and run cruise control that way? Nice and tidy, modernises things a little, and you can have idle control, cruise control and even traction control if you want, all in one tidy package. Something to consider for the future......and also peer pressure 😈

4ag is the true heart of a aw11, strong, reliable and can still make a shite tonne of power with the right mods. I cannot bring myself to replace mine with another type of engine. 29 years so far of 4ag love... haha The aw11's are heavy for what they are, 2zz needs to have it's neck ringed out of it to perform (not saying high revving goodness is a bad thing though), I know everyone is different, but i prefer lower rpm torque to get the chassis boogying. Still I'll look forward to the project progressing. 🙂 I have a mate in WA with a 2gr in his aw11, felt really nice. My 4agte was on par with it performance wise on the street and my twincharger walked over it.
Very difficult to enjoy low down torque, and 4age haha. They're a great classis motor, but by modern standards just aren't efficient anymore. I'd be amazed if there's a single point in the rev range where the 2zz doesn't absolutely flog the poor old 4age.
@@feral4mr2 yeah but as mentioned I don't want a turbo, I've got turbo cars, I want a nice sounding revvy na engine, so this makes way more sense than a 40 year old 4a. I've still got it tucked under the bench and I'll most likely rebuild it and stick it in something for fun :)
Hey Matt, keen on knowing how you will tackle the front wheel drive gearbox selector as when behind the selector will be reversed. I have a Caldina with a 3sgte and had planned for that engine to be my final engine. Your plan sounds awesome and I cannot wait to see how you go.
Heya mate, so i'll be using the stock mr2 shifter assembly in the car and the mr2 cables and then it just needs a bracket to mount the cables to the box and it all works, i can either buy the bracket from a mob in england who makes them or i might have a crack at making it myself as it doesn't look too complex :)
