  • Zenith Super Duty brake pedals, seats, and nose gear installation. This is a rather short update on the rudder and brake pedals, the seat pans, and the nose gear mounts. Then, I'll take you through a short look at what's coming up in future videos about the fuel lines and brake lines from Aircraft Specialty.

    I am learning quite a bit from this seres. I learned a lot from your Cruser build, too. I am planning on ordering a CH 750 this summer. (Ok. I’m hoping that my wife will let me order a CH 750 this summer). Watching you build has been an education on construction of Zenith aircraft.
    I won’t have any time this summer to build, though. I recently retired from my airline job. I’m planning on flying from one end of Alaska to the other in my Lake LA-4.

    As far as the brake lines, I was at an engine seminar and sitting next to a Boeing engineer and somehow we began discussing the Zenith "plastic" (?nylon?) brake lines. He said they used the identical tubing on a lot of their hydraulic test rigs since it was so easy to fabricate lines. He said it handles pressures well in excess of anything you could possibly generate by standing on the brakes - if I recall correctly, I believe it was something like 2-3x higher. So, I feel really comfortable with the lines - they're smaller and easier to fabricate - and cheap! Haha!
    All that being said, however, there's no doubt the braided stainless lines will be much more resistant to damage and sounds like the way to go for a bush plane!
    As far as the nose gear, several builders have mods to make installation and removal of the lower bearing block easier and more secure, such as through-bolting the block to the support underneath rather than drilling it and tapping it. Just wondered if you looked at those or considered those?

    Good idea on using braided brake lines. We have plastic on our MTO-sport Autogyro and as soon as brake fluid heats up brakes fade out. Taxi on a long taxiway and no brakes at the end. We might upgrade to Beringer brake system someday.

      If you are experiencing fade that quickly, most likely you have contaminated fluid. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, and when you get a lot of dissolved water, your braking performance suffers just like you describe. Flush your system with new fluid from a sealed container and I guarantee you will see a huge difference.

    Great '"Methods" planning on your part, particularly with respect to the Nose Gear steering phenolic blocks; very good idea to fit them flush with the back face of the fitting by introducing a slot to clear the rivet heads (two thumbs up).

      Yes I think it's very important for the blocks to be touching the firewall. If they are not, then all of the rearward force on the nose gear will only be held by the 4 small AN3 bolts that thread in only about 3/8" into the bottom of the blocks. If the blocks touch the firewall then that force is applied to the beefy structure on the firewall.

I believe you said your looking for a different power plant for the Super Duty, but I am really interested in the UL Power for my Cruzer and wondered if your could give some insight on your experience to date with your UL Power plant, Thanks again for your great content.       As you probably know I have the UL Power 350iS in my Cruzer. I love it! It runs smooth and sips the fuel. I'm happy with it and wouldn't want any other engine in my Cruzer. But for the Super Duty that will (hopefully) be flying out West over unforgiving terrain, I want a bone simple 100 year old technology Lycoming. As long as it's getting fuel and the mags are working, it's pretty much going to run. The UL Power is absolutely dependent on fuel pumps and electrical power. Lose one of those, and you're a glider.

    Just curious.. Why are the brake cylinder not driven from a centered bracket on the rudder pedals? As they are now, you are putting a lot of side force on the pedal mechanism when using the brakes.

    Hi Mark, you said you are having Aircraft Specialties make your brake lines. First, that’s a great idea. Second, I’m curious how or what you used for a template to get the lengths and bends correct. Thanks and keep up the great work.

      There is no template. I measure the distance between the two connection points and then give that measurement to Steve at Aircraft Specialty. I also let him know if I need a straight fitting or elbow or 45 degree fitting on the ends.

    Looking good. I like the braided lines, but I wonder what the weight penalty is compared to the supplied lines?

      Its the flex that is significantly lower in the hose because of the braid. If there was an ounce to be saved the motorcycle road racers wouldn't use them. I raced for a number of years and its just so much a better feel for braking with the braided lines. Because they flex less in use they last a lot longer too.

      I also understand that if the brake calipers heat up, it *may* affect the plastic lines and soften them where they attach to the calipers. I think the plastic lines work well on something like the Cruzer where I almost never even use the brakes, but on a larger heavier STOL airplane like the SD, I think the braided lines from Aircraft Specialty are the way to go!

    Hey Mark! Great tips for the gear and lines, one question... your left lower engine mount seems to be somewhat crooked, is it not mounted permanently yet? Also, does the parking brake assy. come with the kit or is it purchased separately? Thanks again for making these videos and Blue Skies brotherman!

      All four of the engine mounts are "crooked" because they get mounted to the thick longerons. The mounts are welded with an angle to them to account for the angle they are mounted. You will need to purchase the parking brake separately.

    Mark, are you going to install an undercarriage storage area like Viking Engines has on their Super Duty? If you are, will the brake line going through the floor interfere with this area at all?

      Yes, but I’ve designed my own. I just need to build it once a get the fuselage cleared off the workbench!

    Does the right pedal actually sit forward of the left pedal when the plane is finished?

      No. Right now they are floating where ever their weight pulls them because they are not connected to anything. Once the rudder cables are attached, the pedals will be evened up.

      He is referring to TH-cam in general. It would be nice to have other options other than TH-cam, Google, and Facebook, but unfortunately this is where people go for videos. There are other platforms, but they just don't have the reach of TH-cam.
