Try some wood veneer and glue to the top of the plywood. You will have plenty of choices and you can cut a design out of them before putting them down . You can use different wood types and put the logo on the floor.
J3 Cub has had plywood floorboards since SN 1. But, they orient the grain fore and aft rather than side to side. Looks better. Either birch or spruce, and varnish or shellac.
Mark, Thanks for continuing to inspire a commitment to top notch quality no matter what the task. Thanks for taking the time out to document and share that commitment with the community. (Two thumbs up) ps - with respect to the wood flooring, not that I need bring it up for you - but for the benefit of others - keep in mind flammability avoidance requirements and accompanying constraints.
I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, but there are a large selection of veneers that you can glue a fancy veneer on the floorboards and finish just like any regular woods. Hope it helps. It is a very easy process and looks very good. I enjoy your videos very much and your planes look great! Cheers, and Happy Building!
The B-17 I was working on had the same type plywood. Not original, as that had long gone away, but after polying it the wood was a nice honey color. On top of the plywood we glued down a ribbed rubber flooring. The navigators table just had the poly applied and was gorgeous. Like the green.
Another option to darken the wood for the floorboards. Burn it with a torch. You can go as light or dark as you want. Enjoy the videos. Keep up the good work
Hey Mark , might want to try some linseed oil followed by clear matte finish on the wood. Will darken considerably. Love how it's coming along! Thanks and Blue Skies brotherman!
Looking good. On your floorboards I suggest you check out another builder here on TH-cam, 'Project Kitfox' Episode 38 Carbon fiber. He used a company and software in there to order up a bunch of aluminum and carbon fiber panels with great success. (I tried pasting in the direct links here, but I guess the TH-cam algorithms kept deleting them). Hope that helps.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Understood. If you decide to use real wood and just want to protect it and/or stiffen it up a bit you can lay down a thin piece of traditional fiberglass cloth (not mat) on one side and it will become invisible when cured. Coating the whole thing in cloth would make it extra stiff and water-proof too ... just depends on how much weight you want to add.
I'm sure you've covered it before Mark, but what are you flying, Boeing or Airbus products? Super Duty is looking great!!!!!! Keep the vids coming, as they are very inspirational!!! Thanks!
Maybe consider at flooring laminate material for your floorboards. They can be had in all kinds of wood types and grain, look like real woods, and will wear much better than plywood.
Try a good woodworking shop and find a curly Maple plywood. Love your Channel, please keep the videos coming! I'm building a CH 650 right now, nowhere near as far along as you are but I've really enjoyed your content!
Looks great! Just finished changing my fuel system on my 801. Routed fuel lines down the front door post in clear line. I love being able to see the fuel in the lines. Also replaced the front gear bunji with a coil spring.
I would use some sort of laminate on top of the plywood for a good wear surface.. Any kind of urethane or varnish will constantly need re-coating. All kinds available that look like wood, stone, metal, and solid colors.
Check out Johnson's Workbench in Charlotte MI for plywood . They have a bunch of species of plywood in their catalog including birch, maple, cherry and walnut. They also carry veneers that are very thin that can be glued onto your storage doors.
You're right. My neighbor suggested that too so I'll look into other woods. I think the wooded floorboards will look good and period correct, I just think that the ones I have now are not the right wood.
Thanks for reminding me-I was going to post a link to the anti-slip tape in the description box. I just posted the link in the description box so you can order the same stuff!
Looking Good! In keeping with the black and green theme you might consider 1/2” or 3/4” rubber. I just bought a 5’x’7’ stall mat($77) from North 40 for underneath my dog’s crates. Super dense and durable but might also provide some sound deadening. I think the wood is going to look out of place unless of course you are going to cover it with carpet.
Check out the floorboards on WW2 aircraft-they are wood. But like I said in the video, I'm not sure I like the look anyway. Maybe once it's stained darker I will like it.
@@KitplaneEnthusiast you can get black walnut dye to darken the wood, it’s impressive stuff. Don’t get it on anything that you don’t want permanently stained... Ask me how I know, lol.
HI Mark - Impressive work! I am working on my Cruzer rear fuselage and noticed the lid over the torque tube tunnel has a ton of holes for riveting. Would be a massive amount of nut plates! It appears you have nut plated every other hole which seems very reasonable. Assume you plan to leave half the holes "open"? Thanks for your help as always.
Hey Mark, your airplane is looking great! Love the army green color and impressed with your workmanship. Where did you get your rubberized anti slip pads?
I saw where someone finished an SD in a month, full-time. How long do you think you will have in this SD before you have it flying? Is this an easy kit to assemble or is there a lot of head-scratching? What is your mission for this plane?
Great video as always! Would you be willing to share the shades of green you are using (Fed colors)? I'm planning a green super duty too but I think more olive while your seems green....but maybe that is my TV?
I'm using Utech500 and they could not match or work with FS numbers (they are an automotive urethane.) I took an old Army crate to the distributor and used their scanner to match the paint color. I love the color-it's an exact match of the little Army Jeep model I have in the hangar.

I'm liking the green interior... Cabinet grade birch plywood would look nice, then stain or paint to suit....
Really enjoying catching up on these videos, Mark. I can sense how much fun you’re having building this plane. Inspired to do this myself soon.
Thanks! It’s an awesome hobby. I hope to see you building soon!
You're doing some very nice work on this build. I enjoy following along and I'm learning little tips that are so helpful. Thanks.
Great work, never thought a whole lot about the zenith but you’re a great ambassador! Cool airplane
i guess it's quite off topic but does anyone know a good place to watch new movies online?

Hmm thanks! I didn't think about which way the grain was going. I'll have to see which way looks better.
Thanks for the rubberized grip tape idea! I just put some on the bottom of my hat rack in my cherokee, very clean look.

Was gonna say the same.
Great tip using the cleco as a paint stand. 👍

Great to see all the difference in the build compared to our Cruzers
I would take a propane torch with a flame spreader attachment and lightly burn the wood, it will make the grain really pop.
I've seen that technique done before and it can look good, but I don't think it's the look I'm after for this.

I've seen a number of his videos but I'm going for a WW2 look and don't want any carbon fiber.

Maybe thinned green interior paint would make nice stain for the floor boards.. let the wood show but not so light as you said.

Sun & Fun.

Great work Mark, your channel is one of my favorite build series to follow. You just make me want to work neater. Thanks for your effort!
Thank you!
Turn wood grain 90 degrees.
For the floor boards mahogany would look real good
You're right. My neighbor suggested that too so I'll look into other woods. I think the wooded floorboards will look good and period correct, I just think that the ones I have now are not the right wood.
Looking great!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏻🤠
What did you use for the labeling system or how did you do it? What is the trade name or company's product name for the self stick rubber material?

Yes that is what I did.
There is a fiberglass sheet material called "StarBoard" you might look at that instead of plywood.
I want plywood for that authentic WW2 look.
Hey Mark, your airplane is looking great! Love the army green color and impressed with your workmanship. Where did you get your rubberized anti slip pads?

Hi Mark, perfection as usual. Could you give me the model of that hand nibbler, it looks like a very useful tool.
I have no idea where I bought that. I'm sure you can find one with a Google search!

Nothing. But I’ve got my eye on an S-1 Pitts!
