Days after the launch multiple Vande Bharat Express trains, ThePrint travelled to the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai to see what goes behind the making of the train. And, what it takes for the men and women in the factory to keep the tempo going, working amidst the heat and noise.

The main target is 400 systems by 2025, And Only 25% of those will be made in ICF Chennai, Remaining will be made in ICF latur, Rae Bareli, and In Bihar,And also Private Corps such as Siemens, Alstom,Titagarh ,Medha, Crompton Greaves and Cummins etc who all have manufacturing Plants in India are also Manufacturing
Bringing private enterprise is a great step forward. These enterprises will innovate, improve, and get new skills while getting revenue to run their enterprises.

Salute to Mr. Sudhanshu Mani for making Train 18/ Vande Bharat Train a reality. Biased mindset should not prevent him from recognition of his achievements and efforts.

@@sagnikdebsarkar169 Its the brain and hard work of private employees. These govt employees are taking huge salaries and just doing assembly. The actual brains are private employees working in Medha private rail coach factory in Hyderabad who are actually designing and developing the required electrical equipment and motors for these trains and these private employees get less pay. All govt employees should be sacked and sent to home. Private employees should be given high salaries
VB is a very futuristic semi high speed train and we need to develop a sleeper car version also. More shop floors & workers are required for each segment to ramp up production as I find the current capacity not enough to make 6 VB per month to achieve the target of 75 VB by August 23. Also VB has a good potential for exports like metro coaches, so production should be outsourced to private players.
But soon enough at least MCF Rae Bareli will also start manufacturing the VB 4akes n that'll enable railways achieve target of 75 VBs
"Futuristic" by Indian standards perhaps. But take a look at the equivalent semi-high speed trainsets manufactured in Europe or even China (the Chinese CR200J is a good example) and you can see Vande Bharat has a dated design by international standards. IR badly needs competition from the private sector in rolling stock manufacturing. Like the case of Alstom which builds semi-high speed trainsets for Delhi-Meerut RRTS, the Govt should encourage other European firms like Siemens as well to setup factories in India and manufacture trainsets and coaches for IR.

I want Coromandel Express to be upgraded to Vande bharat from ICF coach. This train wasn't given LHB. It's the most prestigious out of Chennai and a tribute to ICF team also

Coromandel is sleeper train where as vande bharat is chair car.....and vande bharat are for now premium trains I.e, at the lvl of shatabdi/Gatiman not a nrml express train

I visited the Integral Coach Factory as part of my college's study excursions. That was in 1968. It was perhaps as developed at that time. Wheels and axles are made in Bangalore. Engine is also perhaps made elsewhere. In a sense this is like bus body building. The video did not bring up much.

India has more coach factories dude. But this is the oldest and the largest that's y its produced here. Other factories can also manufacture.

Vande Bharat might be revolutionary by Indian standards, but it is way behind equivalents from Europe and China in their manufacturing quality and design aesthetics. IR needs to open up more of rolling stock manufacturing to private suppliers as well. Alstom already has a factory here that builds semi-high speed trainsets for Delhi-Meerut RRTS. If there is sufficient scope for business with IR, we could get Siemens and Talgo to open manufacturing plants as well. Depending solely on Govt-owned coach factories like ICF and MCF isn't going to get us anywhere.
Train set itself is one of the smaller challenges that high-speed rails face. The larger challenge is the infrastructure like tracks and signalling. Better infrastructure than the existing ones are necessary if you want say 350 km/h trains. Without better infrastructure, train sets simply cannot sustain 350 km/h speeds
"Made-in-india train set" is great only for nationalistic dickwaving and winning elections without great infrastructure

Its astonishing to hear "media hype" from your reporter's mouth. What is a hype in it? Its definitely a proud moment for the country that import vs manufacturing is taking precedence with promoting innovation in Railways that hasn't seen since last 50 years.

Where did you get the 162 kmph number? Isnt it designed top speed 200 kmph and and has not it been tested at 183 kmph top speed on the tracks?
It has been tested at 180+ but it is allowed to run at a max of 162 for commercial operation.

The Design specification is for 160 kmph only, but for safety reason they keep +20 kmph buffer for testing purpose, as to get clearance for 160 kmph commercial run, it needs to safely pass the test run at 180kmph, that doesn't mean that train can operate at 180kmph at all times.
@@RailCaptures-byGKP The designed top speed (no exceed speed) is 200 kmph (which means that the train in its current design configuration wil not exceed 200 kmph even if it runs on brand new continuous welded rail along dedicated fenced straight corridor on suitable terrain and adequate electrical traction is available- the grarbox needs to twraked to run it at ~220 kmph) . It was Tested to 183 kmph as no suitable tracks for 200 kmph is available. 160 kmph is the authorised top speed for safe commercial operations like Gatimaan although due to track limitations, the train hardly exceeds 130kmph most of the time as the route does not allow it. Ofcourse for 160kmph to be set as authorised top speed for safe commercial operations, the train had to be tested at an additional +20kmph top speed for demonstration But here the authorised top speed for commercial operations is being made to be assumed as the designed top speed which is wrong.

@@NidhishAbraham Well! Most likely it is unionized. If you work efficiently, a task can be finished in 10 hours. Union negotiated that the task takes two workers and 8 hours each. Then they will be meeting the dead line.

Heard initially railway board was totally against vande bharat. Inventor of vande bharat was entangled in false cases. This shows how easy it is to have atma nirbharta in India 🇮🇳
Please make dedicated tracks for high speed trains like our neighbouring countries or outsource the railways if we need to improve railways...we will sure have high speed trains one day...why not early....fixing dedicated rail route is more important....
