    I think people in the west are spoiled by the luxury of having access to buy as many pipes as they want, or at least afford.
    I lived in a place where pipes are rare and no shipping was possible. We smoked the same pipe for literally years and daily and the one who received a new pipe would celebrate it by sharing it for a try: we would smoke half a bowl each for hours 😂

    IMO people stress too much about pipe smoking. Obviously there are some things you objectively want to avoid, like overheating the pipe, scorching the rim, scratching the bowl, and so on; but everything else basically doesn't matter all that much. I've tried resting, not resting, packing it in several different ways, lighting it with different methods, and got similar results each time. It usually just boils down to "stuff tobacco into the damn thing until it feels pretty solid and suck a flame into it until it starts smoking." If your pipe gets dirty, clean it with some pipe cleaners. If the cake is too thick, get out a steak knife and ream it -- it's that simple.
    Of course, I'd make an exception if you smoke a $900 work of art -- it makes sense to baby one of those. Otherwise, people have been smoking pipes in suboptimal conditions for centuries, and it hasn't been catastrophic. Matches, zippo, butane, resting, not resting, whatever, it all works fine. At most you might get a year or a few months more out of your pipe by pampering it, assuming you use it all the time. Many people have abused pipes pretty hard for decades and they still work fine. I've abused one of my cheap cobs for a while and, after a ghetto reaming, it works perfectly. Pipes are pretty robust in general, so people shouldn't stress out and should simply enjoy the smoke.

    Realistically you could smoke the same pipe 3 to 4 times every day for 20 years and never have a problem with it

    • @Thes4LT
      @Thes4LT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @War Depends. If you use lighters, you could have gotten some lighter fluid in it. This happened to one of my cobs. Here's how I solved it:
      I used some isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs to clean out the inside and put the bit in some soapy water to soak. I made sure to clean the inside of the stem and inside of the bowl.
      After letting it dry for a day or so, I then took a match and stuck it inside the bowl and let it burn away any residue. After a few matches the acrid/sour flavor was gone. I don't know if you should do this in a briar or a really nice pipe unless you're really desperate because I don't know how it will fare. If your pipe has a solid amount of carbon cake it shouldn't be a big problem to stick a couple of matches in it.
      Otherwise, if you're afraid of ruining or burning out your pipe, then I suggest giving it a bath in isopropyl alcohol and then letting it rest. That should get rid of any gross flavors or ghosting.

    I'll smoke a bowl or two from one pipe, clean it, and place it at the end of the pipe rotation. On the weekend I smoke two pipes (like you) and toggle back-and-forth, clean them when doen, and place them at the end if the pipe rotation. Great topic Wilson.

    Very Informative video! I usually will smoke a pipe once a day & let it rest! I have smoked the same pipe several times a day & let it rest several days! I do not see any difference either way! But I do let my pipe rest at least several days, if I smoke it more than once in a day!

    I own only 2 pipe because I'm poor and cant afford new one and not easy to get them where I live and I smoke my pipe morning till night and use it for about a week then I let it rest for a week but yeah my pipe is most of the day in my mouth being smoked and it look and taste find, I clean it a bit every 2 or 4 bowl and I clean the stem and bowl more deeply the night before going to sleep just to avoid moisture problem as I live in the tropics and I clean the cake once a year, I don't give myself an headache with those rest stuff one because I cant afford the luxury of resting multiple pipe daily and having 5 or more pipe like some do and two because I think its useless and don't change a thing, I do it weekly just because I'm lucky enough to have 2 pipe and I live in a tropical country, sometime I even forgot to rest it after a week and use it for like 3 weeks or month in a row and it work find. Here a good pipe cost 400 buck that's more than 2 month salary for me so yeah luxury hobbits to have sadly here

      The problem is if you have briars and don’t rest them they are fully saturated blocks of wood that steams when you smoke it. I only have 2 pipes aswell and I make or buy the filters to trap moisture

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts and routines Wilson. I read down through the comments prior to added mine just to see what other pipe smokers are doing. Looks like I may be more of the old Codger type Piper. I will typically smoke a OTC Burley blend all day in the same pipe, Sir Walter, Carter Hall, Prince Albert, Grainger, with no cleaning at all unless I get a rare gurgle. With the exception of just wiping the exterior with a polishing cloth I typically don't do much else. I'll usually wait for a rainy weekend day to do a mass cleaning of a whole batch of pipes at one time and that will be a thorough cleaning. 👍 I always enjoy your vids, Thank You!

    When I first started pipe smoking I bought a fare amount of pipes thinking I would need to let them rest and so I could smoke multiple times a day. I now have seven one for every day of the week I smoke them normally 4 to 5 times in that day. If I have more time to smoke I will grab a cob and rotate between my daily and a cob. It seems to work for me I don’t have high dollar pipes so it doesn’t mean as much if I burn one out, but I also have not done that just yet. Hopefully it will help someone.

    I Normally just smoke the same pipe a few days or a week or as the mood suggests before cleaning and changing pipes. I havnt had much problems not resting pipes. As long as its not smoking too wet or getting to funky its fine in my opinion. I do recomend switching pipes once a week at least. Thats what i do at least. Savinelli filtered pipes with balsa are great as long as you switch the filter out after every few smokes the pipe stays relativly dry.

    Good information shared in this video, I have a similar practice. I have a weekly pipe rotation and smoke one pipe per day most days. It has taken some time to build my inventory with quality pipes for my rotation, I am working to get this to a two pipe per day rotation on my heavier smoking days but find that one pipe a day works quite well most of the time. Thanks for sharing, take care.

    I spoke with a guy whose been selling tobacco (cigars mostly) since the 90's. Guy is a legend. I asked him this question of "How long do I let a pipe rest to prevent rot?"
    His answer broke down based on pipe: "If it's wooden like briar or cherry, smoke it whatever number of times you smoke in a day, then clean it with pipe cleaners. Then, let it rest for 3 days. If, however, it's Meerschaum, then you can smoke it every day as much as you want, provided you don't get it too hot and you take care to clean it every day."
    He clarified that Meerschaum pipes, being made of a porous rock, not only handle heat better, but don't absorb moisture which is what contributes to rot in wood pipes. So far for a good month I've been smoking my meerschaum pipe every day, and haven't had any problems with cracking or anything. I do let it cool down, however, because even though it has heat resistance, the pipe is too expensive to test its limits.
    Another thing to note with cleaning pipes: I like to use a nip of Johnny Walker Black Label bourbon whiskey to clean the inside of the pipe in leu of alcohol (or Everclear). This is because it (theoretically) imparts a woody flavor in to your smoking experience. The sort of tobacco I smoke is Cavendish aromatics, so I'm not sure about that, but for $2 I'll buy a small bottle and use it for many months. Be sure to put a dry pipe cleaner through afterwards to get excess moisture out, then let them sit to dry out.
    Finally, I've heard the 24 hour rule too, so I guess the best answer would be "Buy a pipe and test it out yourself."

  • @Huanpr
    @Huanpr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t think you need to let it rest more days if you smoke it more than once in one day for any reason other than that the less you use anything the longer it’ll last.
    I just make sure my pipe is cool and dry before I go for more then one bowl on the same pipe in one day.
    Good video! Subscribed!

    Greetings Wilson, I'm enjoying Union Square right now thanks to you. Absolutely you can smoke the same pipe more than once a day, but then, yes, give it a day or two to dry and absorb. With about 40 pipes to smoke I let the tobacco I want to smoke dictate which pipe or type of pipe I use. I have my pipes that work particularly well with Virginias, some work well with burley blends, some are designated for latakia, one is for Gentleman Caller (deer tongue), a couple are for lakelands. No need to overwork any one pipe, but many times I smoke my Friday Savinelli with Lane's Ready Rubbed and then can't resist refilling and smoking again. Yes, a lot of the old timers used the same pipe smoke after smoke, but I believe pipe smokers now can afford to have several pipes and also I believe modern pipe smokers probably take much better care of their pipes than the old timers. With the old timers, many had one or two pipes and smoked the same blend all the time. Nowadays, with the incredible variety of tobaccos for us to choose from and the variety of pipes to choose from (from a good old Dr. Grabow to artisan pipes) we can be more selective.

    I don’t concern myself with this much detail regarding smoking pipes. I basically smoke what I want, when I want, and in the pipe of my choosing. My only sort of dedicated pipe is for English blends. I use a pipe with a smaller bowl for English blends. The English blends are stronger than aromatics to me. I’m satisfied with the English blends with smoking a smaller bowl. I use my larger bowl pipes for aromatics, as they are milder to me, and smoking a larger bowl of aromatics is satisfying to me. I have several pipes now, but had only 1 or 2 pipes for years.

    I'm going to Lazurus this thread 3 years later. I can notice a difference in taste after the 5th or 6th time in a day I smoke it. When I was a beginner I used to think well mabey I got a stem in there, something is adding a sour or harsh taste to it. but after its happened to all my pipes across the board, I'll smoke them 3 times a day and switch.

    It depends a lot on what kind of tobacco you smoke. One example of what i mean would be, aromatics burn 🔥 and get very gunky. With that its pretty important to let the pipe cool down and dry. 1 you can crack or burn up the bowl and 2 for taste, (bitter or unpleasant).

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you HAVE to have multiple pipes? Not at all. Many have simply kept to one, smoked it as much as they liked, and let it burn out/wear down. If that's your desire, go for it.
      Are there benefits to having more than one? Sure. You'll have a better smoking experience when you rest your pipes. Your pipe will have a longer lifespan if you give it rest (makes sense, like with just about everything else), and you enjoy the experience of smoking different pipes, which helps you find your preferred size/shape/etc.
      If you are set on having one pipe only, have at it. But the reason why most veteran pipe smokers (which I'm not one btw) encourage at least a few pipes in your rotation, is to have better smoking experiences. And I have found that out to be the case, as I had your mindset in the beginning.
