I started with a Churchwarden because I liked the style and is still my favorite. I managed to get that too hot as well, however thanks to Muttnchop I've learned a lot and the breath method really got me on the right path to truly enjoying my pipe and the flavors that I burned to ash at first. Some pipes just get hot, bad engineering and etc. You can't avoid it,if slow smoke and drying tobacco won't help, don't worry, just bulid thicker cake as usual to protect briar not too thick but thicker as usual and while smoking the pipe run a cleaner through stem to take away extra moist. You can smoke a pipe with thin walls but it takes perhaps little practice to make it perfect. I've few Big Ben's with thinner walls and thicker cake and slow smoke are the keys to good smoke.,they're in regular rotation and I smoke in them mostly heavy latakias. Good advice Chris. Pipe material can be a contributing factor to heat buildup and tongue bite as well. Some new pipe smokers are drawn to meerschaum for a variety of reasons, one being that they need fewer pipes, since meerschaum doesn't require drying/resting time. Common sense dictates that if a pipe doesn't require resting/drying time, it is due to the fact that it doesn't absorb moisture. That aspect of meerschaum can be a contributing factor in steam bite. Also, I prefer meers that are carved in a lattice carving or something similar, because they provide more external surface area, which dissipates heat buildup in the pipe much more effectively.

Have been trying to smoke my moist tabaccos straight out of the can. Both of them were virginia blends. They got really hot and I couldnt taste it anymore. Thank God I watched this video and found a english blend, much dryer in my assortment. You saved my day.

I´m fairly new to Pipe smoking (about 2 to 3 years) and i always wondered how to control that problem (because i know that i´m a greedy smoker ;) ). But i noticed that when i´m smoking my burley in my Churchwarden that i have less problems with overheating my pipe compared to smoking my virginia from my classic billiard ... and i still have occasionally trouble with determining the right amount of moisture. Hi Chris, and thank you for your teaching lesson,all you saying here is very true,although, when it comes to tobacco blends I personally do find that a hint of perique addition would make your usual bright virgina a bit more bearable, The OGS is a good exemple of that type of blends,Whereas the straight bright and young sort of virginias might be very challenging tobaccos both to new and intermediary pipe smokers.Lately for some weird reason I was getting that ennoying leathery feeling tongue,in case if more than three bowlfuls were smoked per day, and now I'm searching for factors which are causing this.Supposedly its as always:moist tobacco,too rapid cadence + possibly packing was performed a bit hazardously. still learning on, Thank you and have a nice week ahead, Paul
Dear Muttnchop Piper, I start being a great fan of yours, you videos are entertaining and informative at the same time. For braking in my (one and only) pipe I use aromatic tobacco, that's dry like the desert. It produces almost no moisture at all, so the pipe won't get soaking wet, it creates nice, fine ash at the end, and by shaking the pipe afer cooling down completely, the bowl gets a nice, even and really tasty layer of ash all around it. Speaking of hot pipes, yes, it can burn really hot, but I think the temperature of the pipe can be controlled by sensing the temperature and the changes of the taste of the smoke and the hand grip on the briar, but you have to react really quick to avoid overheating, which can happen within seconds. By constantly paying attention to theese details, you can say exactly where the amber wanders inside the bowl. It's a good game. :)
Could not agree more with you Chris, I always compare the outside diameter of the pipe vs the chamber diameter before buying a pipe and the length can indeed compensate (for instance with a long Canadian or a churchwarden) for a thinner bowl. A problematic blend can turn into a pleasant experience in a longer pipe with a thicker bowl (not to mention a 9mm charcoal filter).
All great points, Chris. I just opened an 11 year old tin of Margate a couple of days ago, and still have to dry it about 1/2 hour before filling a bowl with it. But barring problems with the tobacco itself, there can also be problems with the pipe. I have made a few pipes in the last 30 years, and can attest that you really need decent grain in a pipe for it to have it's best absorbing characteristics. I have looked at areas on pipes, both that I have made and others have made, where the grain was not that good, under high magnification. Looking at areas with good grain, you tend to see a lot of pores in the wood. In areas with poor grain, you see much fewer or none. These areas specifically are not as absorbant, and thus, the moisture remains in the bowl, contributing to a hotter smoke, since this moisture will turn to steam eventually. Any tobacconist worth his/her salt will know this if you are a new smoker, and should be able to find a well-grained pipe for you, even from the basket. So yes... Prettier pipes do actually smoke better to a degree. Thick walls are also desirable, but not entirely necessary... I have a 1964 Dunhill shell group 2 that is only 4 inches long, and the bowl thickness at minimum is 1/8"(!). It is an excellent smoker when it is treated properly. I don't take this pipe out of the house, and always sit down and draw very, very slowly on it when smoking, and it really delivers a flavorful smoke. If I go out of bounds with it though, it can take revenge on my tongue. Looking forward to the next vid, Chris.
I have noticed that as we head into fall in the Great White North and the outside temperature has dropped from the high 20's to around 5C (Celsius scale), my pipes are running a lot cooler (also my coffee, and my extremities). Looking ahead to sub zero temperatures will mean my pipe season is at an end until the balmier days of spring. Also, if you smoke outside, air temperature can have a huge effect on how hot a pipe smokes. If you are smoking a virginia on a hot day, expect not to be able to hold the bowl in your hand for any length of time.

I’m sorry it took me so long to watch this video! I was literally cleaning out my pipe draw today, and throwing out my tobacco, because I can’t take the tongue bite anymore, it’s absolutely extremely painful that last for 6-7 days….I’ll try to make these changes before totally giving it up..ty
Jesse, I have made 3 videos called How to smoke your pipe using the breathe method. Please watch those videos and try to implement the technique, if you master it, the tongue bite you are experiencing will disappear.

I would agree with you if wasn't for the fact that the Sun is actually “moving” through the universe's expansion. BUT this argument states that we are also moving through universe expansion, therefore everything may be in motion in a way or another, therefore the Sun seems a good answer to me.
Brand new to piping picked up a cheap pipe, literally like picking cheap dinosaurs out of a toy shop kind of box display. I picked up pipe tobacco that I can't remember the names of since 2 hours ago. Vanilla something and something else. Smelt nice though. I've tried the vanilla one years ago from my father in laws it was alright. Good vid, watching from Chester, England.

Hallo, thank you for this video, even it was made long time ago. I think it was and is very helpfull for many people, especialy beginners. But there is one statement, I don't agree. You talked about the length of a pipe and the thickness of the walls of the bowl and their influence to the heat of the smoke. A longer pipe can let the hot smoke cool down. That is easy understandable. But I disagree, that thicker walls have a perceptible influence of the heat inside the bowl and the heat of the smoke. Beside the moisture of the tabacco, I think the main influence is on the smoker. If I'm smoking too hard and too fast every pipe produces very hot smoke in a short time, regardless, if the walls are thick or thin. Of course, on the outside of the bowl it makes a great difference. You feel the heat a lot later, if the walls on a pipe are thicker. But pipesmokers, it's your hobby, it's your taste, choose the pipes and the tabacco you like. With some pipes and some tabaccos you may have to be a little more carefull, but that dit not mean to avoid them, but to learn to handle them. Have fun. Greetings from Berlin, Germany
Thermometer (sign).....Great video. I just started to buy different tobacco's to understand their flavor and characteristics. I've been buying straight bulk (not tinned) , Peroque, Burley, Virginia, Latakia etc. trying to learn the heat and flavor profiles I like. I like a warmer smoke for now...smoked cigarrettes since the early 70's.
I either can't keep the thing lit, or it's too hot, or sometimes somehow both, I think it may be the short pipe, that's a bit cheap and small, with a wet Virginia blend like you said around 8mins in
Thanks, great video! My pipe has been getting hotter lately, and I think I need to slow down. I just started using 9mm charcoal filters and using the cone ash method, and I found that this helps to cool the smoke and reduce tongue bite.
Aaron D. - I would also strongly advise that you use the breathe method of smoking a pipe. I have done a couple of videos on this method, it has totally gotten rid of tongue bite for me. 👍👍👍
I know this is an old video, but I would like to add different tobacco's pack differently. Packing ribbon cut is much different than plug tobacco that requires hand rubbing. Learning how not to pack too tight or too loose takes a little practice. Then there is the pace, you're not a steam locomotive, so slow it down. Many new commers puff way too fast. Pipe smoking is supposed to be relaxing.

I would think the thin bowl would actually make the smoke cooler and tobacco burn cooler as more heat was being dissipated from the bowl though making it harder to hold. I am about 6 months in to this pipe journey transitioning from cigars and am apparently one of the few clean shaven pipe smokers in the states. That helps for the five second bowl to cheek test for heat though! A mutton chop should work too.
Shawn Davie - I have found if you use the breathe method of smoking a pipe, you can control the burn rate of the tobacco, so thin bowl, or thick makes no difference. 👍👍👍

I'm trying to break in a brand spanking new Missouri Meerschaum hardwood pipe. It seems like it has way thinner walls than my cob country gentleman. I'm on my third bowl and it's getting hotter than a pistol. I'm using the breath method and it's burning smoke like a forest fire. I'm smoking a Burley blend. I guess I'm going to have to smoke at a snail's pace until it gets a good cake built up.
Good video Chris. After one of your older videos, I tried some Firestorm. It by far is my favorite so far! Can you recommend some other tobaccos similar to the Firestorm?
I smoke a straight Canadian with real thin walls, she gets hot fast if you're not careful! Especially with VaPers! Latakia blends seem to burn a lot cooler.

Secondly, I have a question (or two) for you - I'm a new pipe smoker and was wondering what your thoughts were re: Peterson Pipes and the P-Lip System? Would you suggest these pipes for a new pipe smoker? (although I didn't notice any Peterson's in your collection...) Rob Austin - No problem Rob, first of all, I purchased a Peterson P - lip system pipe, and I didn't care for it, yes the smoke is directed to the roof of your mouth, but I found that I tasted more generic tobacco taste, then the intended taste of the tobacco. Now that being said, don't take just my word for it, ask other people before you make a decision. As far as the Churchwarden pipes go, I am a Savinelli man, and Savinelli has a lot of different shaped Churchwarden's for around the $100.00 price range. 👍👍👍
When I first tried pipe smoking it was an aromatic blend that I smoked, Captain Black. And guess what? I gave up pipe smoking for a while because I thought that's how all pipe tobacco burns! Then I tried another Virginia based aromatic, this time Royal Yacht. Same problem! But when I tried an English blend in a Savinelli everything was different. This time the smoke was tasty, cool and the pipe wasn't getting all that hot either. I know that my cigarette smoking method of firing up the tobacco is partly to blame but honestly, aromatics (especially those that are Virginia based) can easily turn into a disaster exactly like you say.
Piruz Mollazadeh - exactly, now that you know this, how likely are you to recommend an Aromatic to someone who says, hay man I just bought my first pipe, what tobacco should I get? It's a double edged sword, you want to smoke something sweet to learn how to smoke, but it burns so hot it gives you tongue bite, on the other hand, if you suggest an English blend that may smoke cooler, most people don't like the taste, so it's pretty difficult to guide someone without being there to explain the process, but I give it a try. 👍👍👍
How can anyone not appreciate the taste of something like Nightcap or Early Morning Pipe? My cousin wanted to try some aromatics for her first pipe smoke but when she listened to me and tried Nightcap she was amazed.
A pear bowl is going to be like s potatoes... holds heat. When it gets broke in properly it may still burn hotter than others. The character of pipes also factor in. My pear bowl Burns hotter than I like, but untill then it sure smokes nice. Thanks for your other right on advice.
Personally I like a hotter bowl, as a cooked oakey flavour always reminds me of a campfire, plus I smoke a church warden so it takes me straight into a daydream like middle earth or the forgotten realms.

Hey muttnchop! Love the channel and im loving piping. I find my bowls get really hot, BUT ... my smoke is cool and i dont get tongue bite at all. What gives? I have solid pipes and im a clencher, doing a psuedo-breath method. I do a lot of breathing back through the pipe with consistant sips that provide very cool tasty smoke. But by the end of every bowl, its too hot to hold...

Clemens J - thanks for watching my videos my friend, to answer your question, no not really, some people believe you should only smoke 1 bowl in 1 pipe per day, so if I wanted to smoke 3 bowls I would use 3 pipes. I prefer to smoke 2 to 3 bowls per pipe, I smoke a bowl, clean the pipe, smoke another bowl , clean the pipe, then smoke my last bowl, then clean it really well and let it rest for a minimum of 24 hours I get good flavor from each tobacco I smoke, and it's just the way I have smoked a pipe all my life. 👍👍👍

Piper good evening again. I wrote to you the other day about me being a new pipe smoker. Since then I have smoked a couple of bowls out of my new pipe with what's called Dovercourt aromatic tobacco. My question to you tonight is, my pipe is not a big long pipe but it is medium sized because I wanted a cooler smoke. I am trying to follow your videos on how to pack, light, and the breathing method. All very helpful by the way! When I lit my first bowl it tasted very ashy to me. The tobacco smells wonderful and didn't think it's supposed to taste like that. Especially since I'm smoking out of a new pipe. But maybe I stand corrected and that's how it's supposed to be. Just was wondering if you have any suggestions for me or maybe I should try a different tobacco? Thanks Muttonchop Piper!
Wes McIntosh - hey Wes, I have never heard of Dovercourt aromatic pipe tobacco, so I looked it up, the only blend that seem to match it is a house blend called Dover Court sold by David's gifts and tobacco. If this is the blend, then it is described as being a mild smoke comprising of Black Cavendish and Virginia tobacco. A mild tobacco like this might not be very flavorful, and you might get that ashy taste. Let me know if this is the tobacco that you are smoking, and we will go from there. 👍👍👍

I normally smoke English blends, Virginias and discovered from one of your videos, Old Dark Fired, which has become one of my favourites, by the way !! I recently tried Autumn Evening and Corn Cob Pipe and A button Nose from C&D which to be honest, I enjoyed. I was just wondering which kind of pipe will you recommend for aromatics (as I was not used to smoke them)... I thought about the Savinelli 320, or will be better to go for a Churchwarden...? Javier 06 - you can pretty much smoke aromatics in any style of pipe, you just need to dedicate that pipe to the aromatic tobacco's you smoke in it. So choose a style and size that you like and go for it my friend. 🎃🎃🎃
Hello sir. New pipe smoker here. I watched several of your videos. Really helpful and useful. Here's something I hope you can help with... My pipe keeps turning off all the time. Why? Is the way I pack the tobacco? I do the charring light then stamp and then re light again but nothing, after a few puffs, the tobacco turns off. Why's this?
Ivan R. Vasileff - yes, more then likely it's due to the way you pack your pipe, I recommend looking at my catalog of videos, I have several that describe how to pack your pipe, watch these videos, pack your pipe as instructed, if it's still a problem let me know and we will analyze further. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the reply. Oh and I meant "tamping" instead of "stamp". Sorry. Giving a second thought about it I might be packing my pipe to loose, that could be the problem isn't it? And also, watching carefuly the way you gently do the charring light I believe I'm doing it wrong, because sometimes I get that burned taste when first lighting the pipe, and also a 2-2,5mm layer of ash is developed. So maybe that doesn't help either.
Help! I've only been smoking for maybe two months, and both of my pipes now contain NO flavor. I used to have issues keeping the damn thing lit, but all of my tobaccos had AMAZING flavors. I'm talking menthol-ish, and rich. Now I can get a good smoke, easily lit and keeps lit first time, but I'm drawing heat and it's no longer a pleasure. The first bowls of Sparrow Green blend number 23 were unbelievable. Now I just burn my mouth, almost like how the cheese from a pizza leaves your mouth hot tens of minutes after smoking. My one pipe is a briar bowl, maybe the volume and shape of your thumb, from tip to first joint. Stem is about 5 inches long. My other pipe is a briar dowl, 3 inch long stem with an Ajustomatic valve made by Willard. I bought a three in one pipe tool, and I wonder if I am packing it too tightly. I'm an engineer by profession, and I am prone to overthinking.

Dear Muttonchop! I just got my fist straight billiard Savinelli 106 pipe and had the first smoke. Didn’t know I mustn’t remove the stem immediately while hot. At least I’ll know from now on thanks! Did I damage it because this one occasion? It seems became loose, although could be the worry induced placebo...
My first pipe I held by the stem rather than the bowl, and I managed to get it so hot that the wax bubbled up on the bowl. :( Now I always hold it by the bowl or at least touch it regularly to check temperature.

Today I smoked for the first time ever. And it did get hot but I was using the stanwell classic tobacco, a mixture blended from Virginia and it is aromatic which could be the reason for the hotness. I don't think it was my pipe since it's medium sized stim compared to the long one shown in the video and the walls weren't that thin. Do you have a video that discusses how to control the hotness? (if it still gets hot in the middle of smoking) And another question I have is do all Virginia tobaccos burn hot ?
I used to smoke but being on a budget, I generally used $30-40 Dr. Grabow pipes and they just don't last. I figure one needs to spend a little money to get a decent pipe. I'm in a position now where I can spend maybe $100 or a little more. Can anyone recommended a good brand. And anything else would be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm smoking a pipe which I really really like Mr brog number 37 Viking and I found it to be a very good fit for me however as you know from recent responses that I have left on your Channel it's been quite some time since I've smoked a pipe. I'm just beginning to learn the ins-and-outs of it again. What struck me about this video especially where it pertains to the pipe is that the number 37 Viking has very thick walls and a much thinner bowl. I was wondering in that particular case if maybe packing a loser bowl because of thick walls might be a better approach for this particular pipe due to the fact that it is very much heating up when it really should not. Any advice on this would be much appreciated thank you.
John Silvers -Yes, here is my advice, look on my channel, for videos pertaining to the Breathe method of smoking your pipe. This method truly eliminated a hot pipe. Packing your pipe wrong will result in two things 1 if you pack it to loose it will constantly go out 2 If you pack it too tight, you won't be able to light it at all, a hot bowl comes from the way you smoke your pipe, not how you pack it. Use the 3 pinch method to fill the bowl, and the breathe method to smoke it, that should do it for you. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper I watched your video again on the breathe method although to be honest with you I did get it down the first time I saw the video if you'll recall I even commented on it. That being said I did watch it again and did my very best to apply it to the second bowl that I had out of the pipe. Although I had the method right the one thing that I was doing wrong and I kind of caught myself doing was stoking the pipe way too much to try and keep it going as though if it were going out it would be some sort of mortal sin. This time not only did I use the breathe method but I also gave a break in between drawing let the tobacco sit for a while and enjoyed the pipe a lot more. You are so very right about that breathe technique you can really taste the tobacco properly and it is so much more enjoyable. Turns out I was just stoking the fire a little too much... the second pipe got just a little bit warm but never got hot and I was able to smoke it all the way down with pure enjoyment. These videos have continued to be a valuable asset thank you so much for putting the time and effort into making them. On a secondary note my birthday is right around the corner and I thought as just a little share with you that I would let you know that my request to my family was to get a jumbo Mountain Dulcimer something which I have never owned. I have a few midsized and one slightly larger but I have never owned a jumbo. Cannot wait to get it in my hands and light up my new pipe. Some pipes just get hot, bad engineering and etc. You can't avoid it,if slow smoke and drying tobacco won't help, don't worry, just bulid thicker cake as usual to protect briar not too thick but thicker as usual and while smoking the pipe run a cleaner through stem to take away extra moist. You can smoke a pipe with thin walls but it takes perhaps little practice to make it perfect. I've few Big Ben's with thinner walls and thicker cake and slow smoke are the keys to good smoke.,they're in regular rotation and I smoke in them mostly heavy latakias.

Good advice Chris. Pipe material can be a contributing factor to heat buildup and tongue bite as well. Some new pipe smokers are drawn to meerschaum for a variety of reasons, one being that they need fewer pipes, since meerschaum doesn't require drying/resting time. Common sense dictates that if a pipe doesn't require resting/drying time, it is due to the fact that it doesn't absorb moisture. That aspect of meerschaum can be a contributing factor in steam bite. Also, I prefer meers that are carved in a lattice carving or something similar, because they provide more external surface area, which dissipates heat buildup in the pipe much more effectively.

Have been trying to smoke my moist tabaccos straight out of the can. Both of them were virginia blends. They got really hot and I couldnt taste it anymore. Thank God I watched this video and found a english blend, much dryer in my assortment. You saved my day.

I´m fairly new to Pipe smoking (about 2 to 3 years) and i always wondered how to control that problem (because i know that i´m a greedy smoker ;) ). But i noticed that when i´m smoking my burley in my Churchwarden that i have less problems with overheating my pipe compared to smoking my virginia from my classic billiard ... and i still have occasionally trouble with determining the right amount of moisture. Hi Chris, and thank you for your teaching lesson,all you saying here is very true,although, when it comes to tobacco blends I personally do find that a hint of perique addition would make your usual bright virgina a bit more bearable, The OGS is a good exemple of that type of blends,Whereas the straight bright and young sort of virginias might be very challenging tobaccos both to new and intermediary pipe smokers.Lately for some weird reason I was getting that ennoying leathery feeling tongue,in case if more than three bowlfuls were smoked per day, and now I'm searching for factors which are causing this.Supposedly its as always:moist tobacco,too rapid cadence + possibly packing was performed a bit hazardously. still learning on, Thank you and have a nice week ahead, Paul

Dear Muttnchop Piper, I start being a great fan of yours, you videos are entertaining and informative at the same time.
For braking in my (one and only) pipe I use aromatic tobacco, that's dry like the desert. It produces almost no moisture at all, so the pipe won't get soaking wet, it creates nice, fine ash at the end, and by shaking the pipe afer cooling down completely, the bowl gets a nice, even and really tasty layer of ash all around it. Speaking of hot pipes, yes, it can burn really hot, but I think the temperature of the pipe can be controlled by sensing the temperature and the changes of the taste of the smoke and the hand grip on the briar, but you have to react really quick to avoid overheating, which can happen within seconds. By constantly paying attention to theese details, you can say exactly where the amber wanders inside the bowl. It's a good game. :)

Could not agree more with you Chris, I always compare the outside diameter of the pipe vs the chamber diameter before buying a pipe and the length can indeed compensate (for instance with a long Canadian or a churchwarden) for a thinner bowl. A problematic blend can turn into a pleasant experience in a longer pipe with a thicker bowl (not to mention a 9mm charcoal filter).

All great points, Chris. I just opened an 11 year old tin of Margate a couple of days ago, and still have to dry it about 1/2 hour before filling a bowl with it. But barring problems with the tobacco itself, there can also be problems with the pipe. I have made a few pipes in the last 30 years, and can attest that you really need decent grain in a pipe for it to have it's best absorbing characteristics. I have looked at areas on pipes, both that I have made and others have made, where the grain was not that good, under high magnification. Looking at areas with good grain, you tend to see a lot of pores in the wood. In areas with poor grain, you see much fewer or none. These areas specifically are not as absorbant, and thus, the moisture remains in the bowl, contributing to a hotter smoke, since this moisture will turn to steam eventually. Any tobacconist worth his/her salt will know this if you are a new smoker, and should be able to find a well-grained pipe for you, even from the basket. So yes... Prettier pipes do actually smoke better to a degree. Thick walls are also desirable, but not entirely necessary... I have a 1964 Dunhill shell group 2 that is only 4 inches long, and the bowl thickness at minimum is 1/8"(!). It is an excellent smoker when it is treated properly. I don't take this pipe out of the house, and always sit down and draw very, very slowly on it when smoking, and it really delivers a flavorful smoke. If I go out of bounds with it though, it can take revenge on my tongue. Looking forward to the next vid, Chris.

I have noticed that as we head into fall in the Great White North and the outside temperature has dropped from the high 20's to around 5C (Celsius scale), my pipes are running a lot cooler (also my coffee, and my extremities). Looking ahead to sub zero temperatures will mean my pipe season is at an end until the balmier days of spring.

Also, if you smoke outside, air temperature can have a huge effect on how hot a pipe smokes. If you are smoking a virginia on a hot day, expect not to be able to hold the bowl in your hand for any length of time.
The coolest burning blend I've smoked to date is MacBaron Mixture Scottish Blend. Its also one of my favorites.

Hallo, thank you for this video, even it was made long time ago. I think it was and is very helpfull for many people, especialy beginners.
But there is one statement, I don't agree. You talked about the length of a pipe and the thickness of the walls of the bowl and their influence to the heat of the smoke. A longer pipe can let the hot smoke cool down. That is easy understandable. But I disagree, that thicker walls have a perceptible influence of the heat inside the bowl and the heat of the smoke.
Beside the moisture of the tabacco,
I think the main influence is on the smoker. If I'm smoking too hard and too fast every pipe produces very hot smoke in a short time, regardless, if the walls are thick or thin.
Of course, on the outside of the bowl it makes a great difference. You feel the heat a lot later, if the walls on a pipe are thicker.
But pipesmokers, it's your hobby, it's your taste, choose the pipes and the tabacco you like. With some pipes and some tabaccos you may have to be a little more carefull, but that dit not mean to avoid them, but to learn to handle them. Have fun.

Thermometer (sign).....Great video. I just started to buy different tobacco's to understand their flavor and characteristics. I've been buying straight bulk (not tinned) , Peroque, Burley, Virginia, Latakia etc. trying to learn the heat and flavor profiles I like. I like a warmer smoke for now...smoked cigarrettes since the early 70's.

I either can't keep the thing lit, or it's too hot, or sometimes somehow both, I think it may be the short pipe, that's a bit cheap and small, with a wet Virginia blend like you said around 8mins in
Thanks, great video! My pipe has been getting hotter lately, and I think I need to slow down. I just started using 9mm charcoal filters and using the cone ash method, and I found that this helps to cool the smoke and reduce tongue bite.
Aaron D. - I would also strongly advise that you use the breathe method of smoking a pipe. I have done a couple of videos on this method, it has totally gotten rid of tongue bite for me. 👍👍👍

I know this is an old video, but I would like to add different tobacco's pack differently. Packing ribbon cut is much different than plug tobacco that requires hand rubbing. Learning how not to pack too tight or too loose takes a little practice. Then there is the pace, you're not a steam locomotive, so slow it down. Many new commers puff way too fast. Pipe smoking is supposed to be relaxing.

I would think the thin bowl would actually make the smoke cooler and tobacco burn cooler as more heat was being dissipated from the bowl though making it harder to hold. I am about 6 months in to this pipe journey transitioning from cigars and am apparently one of the few clean shaven pipe smokers in the states. That helps for the five second bowl to cheek test for heat though! A mutton chop should work too.
Shawn Davie - I have found if you use the breathe method of smoking a pipe, you can control the burn rate of the tobacco, so thin bowl, or thick makes no difference. 👍👍👍
Also packing the pipe properly makes it smoke cooler. Too hard or too lose and the pipe overheats.

I'm trying to break in a brand spanking new Missouri Meerschaum hardwood pipe. It seems like it has way thinner walls than my cob country gentleman. I'm on my third bowl and it's getting hotter than a pistol. I'm using the breath method and it's burning smoke like a forest fire. I'm smoking a Burley blend. I guess I'm going to have to smoke at a snail's pace until it gets a good cake built up.

I smoke a straight Canadian with real thin walls, she gets hot fast if you're not careful! Especially with VaPers! Latakia blends seem to burn a lot cooler.

Secondly, I have a question (or two) for you - I'm a new pipe smoker and was wondering what your thoughts were re: Peterson Pipes and the P-Lip System? Would you suggest these pipes for a new pipe smoker? (although I didn't notice any Peterson's in your collection...) If not, do you have a couple longer stemmed pipes, with thicker bowls that you would recommend (in the $100 or less price range?) Thanks so much and sorry for all the questions.

Rob Austin - No problem Rob, first of all, I purchased a Peterson P - lip system pipe, and I didn't care for it, yes the smoke is directed to the roof of your mouth, but I found that I tasted more generic tobacco taste, then the intended taste of the tobacco. Now that being said, don't take just my word for it, ask other people before you make a decision. As far as the Churchwarden pipes go, I am a Savinelli man, and Savinelli has a lot of different shaped Churchwarden's for around the $100.00 price range. 👍👍👍

When I first tried pipe smoking it was an aromatic blend that I smoked, Captain Black. And guess what? I gave up pipe smoking for a while because I thought that's how all pipe tobacco burns! Then I tried another Virginia based aromatic, this time Royal Yacht. Same problem!
But when I tried an English blend in a Savinelli everything was different. This time the smoke was tasty, cool and the pipe wasn't getting all that hot either. I know that my cigarette smoking method of firing up the tobacco is partly to blame but honestly, aromatics (especially those that are Virginia based) can easily turn into a disaster exactly like you say.
Piruz Mollazadeh - exactly, now that you know this, how likely are you to recommend an Aromatic to someone who says, hay man I just bought my first pipe, what tobacco should I get? It's a double edged sword, you want to smoke something sweet to learn how to smoke, but it burns so hot it gives you tongue bite, on the other hand, if you suggest an English blend that may smoke cooler, most people don't like the taste, so it's pretty difficult to guide someone without being there to explain the process, but I give it a try. 👍👍👍
How can anyone not appreciate the taste of something like Nightcap or Early Morning Pipe? My cousin wanted to try some aromatics for her first pipe smoke but when she listened to me and tried Nightcap she was amazed.
A pear bowl is going to be like s potatoes... holds heat. When it gets broke in properly it may still burn hotter than others. The character of pipes also factor in. My pear bowl Burns hotter than I like, but untill then it sure smokes nice. Thanks for your other right on advice.

Personally I like a hotter bowl, as a cooked oakey flavour always reminds me of a campfire, plus I smoke a church warden so it takes me straight into a daydream like middle earth or the forgotten realms.

Hey muttnchop! Love the channel and im loving piping. I find my bowls get really hot, BUT ... my smoke is cool and i dont get tongue bite at all. What gives? I have solid pipes and im a clencher, doing a psuedo-breath method. I do a lot of breathing back through the pipe with consistant sips that provide very cool tasty smoke. But by the end of every bowl, its too hot to hold...

Clemens J - thanks for watching my videos my friend, to answer your question, no not really, some people believe you should only smoke 1 bowl in 1 pipe per day, so if I wanted to smoke 3 bowls I would use 3 pipes. I prefer to smoke 2 to 3 bowls per pipe, I smoke a bowl, clean the pipe, smoke another bowl , clean the pipe, then smoke my last bowl, then clean it really well and let it rest for a minimum of 24 hours I get good flavor from each tobacco I smoke, and it's just the way I have smoked a pipe all my life. 👍👍👍

Piper good evening again. I wrote to you the other day about me being a new pipe smoker.
Since then I have smoked a couple of bowls out of my new pipe with what's called Dovercourt aromatic tobacco. My question to you tonight is, my pipe is not a big long pipe but it is medium sized because I wanted a cooler smoke. I am trying to follow your videos on how to pack, light, and the breathing method. All very helpful by the way!
When I lit my first bowl it tasted very ashy to me. The tobacco smells wonderful and didn't think it's supposed to taste like that. Especially since I'm smoking out of a new pipe. But maybe I stand corrected and that's how it's supposed to be.

Wes McIntosh - hey Wes, I have never heard of Dovercourt aromatic pipe tobacco, so I looked it up, the only blend that seem to match it is a house blend called Dover Court sold by David's gifts and tobacco. If this is the blend, then it is described as being a mild smoke comprising of Black Cavendish and Virginia tobacco. A mild tobacco like this might not be very flavorful, and you might get that ashy taste. Let me know if this is the tobacco that you are smoking, and we will go from there. 👍👍👍

Wes McIntosh - The next time you are in the tobacco shop there in Des Moines see if the have a tin blend called Frog Morton Cellar, give that a try and see if that doesn't taste better. 👍👍👍

Hello, Mister Muttnchop Piper... First of all thanks for your great and informative videos, they are always welcome for someone like me, who started smoking pipe about a year ago. I normally smoke English blends, Virginias and discovered from one of your videos, Old Dark Fired, which has become one of my favourites, by the way !! I recently tried Autumn Evening and Corn Cob Pipe and A button Nose from C&D which to be honest, I enjoyed. I was just wondering which kind of pipe will you recommend for aromatics (as I was not used to smoke them)... I thought about the Savinelli 320, or will be better to go for a Churchwarden...? Javier 06 - you can pretty much smoke aromatics in any style of pipe, you just need to dedicate that pipe to the aromatic tobacco's you smoke in it. So choose a style and size that you like and go for it my friend. 🎃🎃🎃

Smoking moist virginia/perique out of a thin walled, short pipe is a recipe for disaster or as we who were in the Navy would say 'a perfect storm'.

Hello sir. New pipe smoker here. I watched several of your videos. Really helpful and useful. Here's something I hope you can help with... My pipe keeps turning off all the time. Why? Is the way I pack the tobacco? I do the charring light then stamp and then re light again but nothing, after a few puffs, the tobacco turns off. Why's this?
Ivan R. Vasileff - yes, more then likely it's due to the way you pack your pipe, I recommend looking at my catalog of videos, I have several that describe how to pack your pipe, watch these videos, pack your pipe as instructed, if it's still a problem let me know and we will analyze further. 👍👍👍

Giving a second thought about it I might be packing my pipe to loose, that could be the problem isn't it?
And also, watching carefuly the way you gently do the charring light I believe I'm doing it wrong, because sometimes I get that burned taste when first lighting the pipe, and also a 2-2,5mm layer of ash is developed. So maybe that doesn't help either.
Help! I've only been smoking for maybe two months, and both of my pipes now contain NO flavor.
I used to have issues keeping the damn thing lit, but all of my tobaccos had AMAZING flavors. I'm talking menthol-ish, and rich. Now I can get a good smoke, easily lit and keeps lit first time, but I'm drawing heat and it's no longer a pleasure.
The first bowls of Sparrow Green blend number 23 were unbelievable. Now I just burn my mouth, almost like how the cheese from a pizza leaves your mouth hot tens of minutes after smoking.
My one pipe is a briar bowl, maybe the volume and shape of your thumb, from tip to first joint. Stem is about 5 inches long. My other pipe is a briar dowl, 3 inch long stem with an Ajustomatic valve made by Willard.
I bought a three in one pipe tool, and I wonder if I am packing it too tightly.
I'm an engineer by profession, and I am prone to overthinking.

Dear Muttonchop! I just got my fist straight billiard Savinelli 106 pipe and had the first smoke. Didn’t know I mustn’t remove the stem immediately while hot. At least I’ll know from now on thanks! Did I damage it because this one occasion? It seems became loose, although could be the worry induced placebo...

My first pipe I held by the stem rather than the bowl, and I managed to get it so hot that the wax bubbled up on the bowl. :( Now I always hold it by the bowl or at least touch it regularly to check temperature.

rip, ive lived in virginia all my life and got used to the peppery hot tobacco that would burn your gums for 5 mins after you got done smoking ahaha.
Today I smoked for the first time ever. And it did get hot but I was using the stanwell classic tobacco, a mixture blended from Virginia and it is aromatic which could be the reason for the hotness. I don't think it was my pipe since it's medium sized stim compared to the long one shown in the video and the walls weren't that thin. Do you have a video that discusses how to control the hotness? (if it still gets hot in the middle of smoking) And another question I have is do all Virginia tobaccos burn hot ?
I used to smoke but being on a budget, I generally used $30-40 Dr. Grabow pipes and they just don't last. I figure one needs to spend a little money to get a decent pipe. I'm in a position now where I can spend maybe $100 or a little more. Can anyone recommended a good brand. And anything else would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm smoking a pipe which I really really like Mr brog number 37 Viking and I found it to be a very good fit for me however as you know from recent responses that I have left on your Channel it's been quite some time since I've smoked a pipe. I'm just beginning to learn the ins-and-outs of it again. What struck me about this video especially where it pertains to the pipe is that the number 37 Viking has very thick walls and a much thinner bowl. I was wondering in that particular case if maybe packing a loser bowl because of thick walls might be a better approach for this particular pipe due to the fact that it is very much heating up when it really should not. Any advice on this would be much appreciated thank you.
John Silvers -Yes, here is my advice, look on my channel, for videos pertaining to the Breathe method of smoking your pipe. This method truly eliminated a hot pipe. Packing your pipe wrong will result in two things 1 if you pack it to loose it will constantly go out 2 If you pack it too tight, you won't be able to light it at all, a hot bowl comes from the way you smoke your pipe, not how you pack it. Use the 3 pinch method to fill the bowl, and the breathe method to smoke it, that should do it for you. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper I watched your video again on the breathe method although to be honest with you I did get it down the first time I saw the video if you'll recall I even commented on it. That being said I did watch it again and did my very best to apply it to the second bowl that I had out of the pipe. Although I had the method right the one thing that I was doing wrong and I kind of caught myself doing was stoking the pipe way too much to try and keep it going as though if it were going out it would be some sort of mortal sin. This time not only did I use the breathe method but I also gave a break in between drawing let the tobacco sit for a while and enjoyed the pipe a lot more. You are so very right about that breathe technique you can really taste the tobacco properly and it is so much more enjoyable. Turns out I was just stoking the fire a little too much... the second pipe got just a little bit warm but never got hot and I was able to smoke it all the way down with pure enjoyment. These videos have continued to be a valuable asset thank you so much for putting the time and effort into making them. On a secondary note my birthday is right around the corner and I thought as just a little share with you that I would let you know that my request to my family was to get a jumbo Mountain Dulcimer something which I have never owned. I have a few midsized and one slightly larger but I have never owned a jumbo. Cannot wait to get it in my hands and light up my new pipe. Thank you again for taking the time to read you have my word I will keep further questions and answers a little shorter and more compact as I'm sure you don't want to read a life story every single time a comment comes up.
