  • In this experiment, we will look at the reaction of hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate to form calcium chloride salt, carbon dioxide, and water.
    Test for carbon dioxide gas:
    Bubble the gas into limewater.
Observation: If carbon dioxide gas is present, a white precipitate will be formed.

Well done Raquel 👍🏻👍🏻 .. plus your summary at the end with equations is certainly helpful. In addition, it has been asked in certain exam questions on what the cloudiness is.. CaCO3, that came from CO2 reacting with Ca(OH)2 in lime water 😁

Hi tc. I need to ask what is the use of limewater

Hi there, limewater is used to test for presence of carbon dioxide gas. If it is a positive test (i.e. CO2 gas is present), then a white precipitate will form in limewater.
The chemical reaction that is happening in the limewater (which is calcium hydroxide) is:
calcium hydroxide + carbon dioxide -> calcium carbonate + water
the "white ppt" that you see is insoluble calcium carbonate
      hope this helps! :)
