I read an interview with Jim Hall and a number of other younger jazz guitarists a number of years ago and the interviewer asked all of them what they have on their MP3 players, they all gave their answers with different kinds of music and when the question got to Jim at the end, he said "I don't have one of those, I'm a big fan of silence".
Amazing! thank you guys so much! "Play space, something so fundamental so "basic", and yet so hard...? you could say that there are a lot more players with ADHD than expected... Larry explains it so well, most of the time is insecurity. (Other times is just plain braggin, wish to impress...funny, because in addition of what Peter says about listening to what you just played, if you don't let any space, people do not have time to be impressed) Do you now, one thing that does miracles for letting more space, and being more aware of every single note you play? begin to develop ARTHRITIS Kudos to Bill for mantaining the deadpan face after that!
Excellent discussion about "Not playing" and Timing.
As the great Jim Hall (a master of understatement and economy) so pithily put it: "Don't just play something! Sit there..."

I can’t say this emphatically enough, AMEN. I wish every musician had to listen to this before getting on stage. 😂
