- I HAD to talk about the Visions of Mana demo that just dropped July 29th, because I'm incredibly excited by what I've experienced so far! This game is shaping up to be rock solid, although a slight departure from the Action RPG STYLE of Trials of Mana Remake. And while I have some nitpicks here or there, they are vastly overshadowed by the fact that we're getting a NEW MANA GAME in 2024! Let's gooo!

You know, at first I was saddened by the move away from the old, classic Derek hair, but the more you look like you belong in FF XII, the more I honestly prefer it. Also, good video.
Thank you Seth! Breaking away from my "brand" hairdo was a little bit of a risk, but when it's all grown out and past the awkward in-between stage, I think it'll suit everything really well. :)

They took out everything I don't like about Mana and expanded everything I enjoy about it.
Game looks great. Demo was fantastic.
The more I play the demo, the more the combat feels like Tales of Arise without the combos. Lots going on, I feel like I'm mostly button mashing swings and spells. But it's still fun. The longer I played, the more I enjoyed the demo. Oh and it showed up on my main PS5 page, there was a row for demos.
Idunno man, I just played the demo and something feels... "off" -- can't quite put my finger on it. We'll see how it shapes up. I remain cautiously optimistic.
Yeah, it's clunky and the combat is slow. Getting knocked over and having the controls robbed of you is like a 101 don't do in game design.
Im a JRPG dork and Secret Of Mana was one of my first video games as a little kid in the 90s. I dont keep up with modern game releases all that much but am beyond excited for this!

It's pretty much exactly everything I wanted for a new Mana and a modern action RPG! It's colorful, charming and super fun to play and explore. You can air dash around after double jumps, the turn is snappy and doesn't require a spin animation. It even lets you flip the confirm button back to O, where it should be. In fact, I think it's the only PS5 game I've seen that lets you do that.
I also played the PS4 version of the demo as well, and while the PS5 version was silky smooth, on PS4 it had some real slowdown, pop-in and long load times that just aren't there on PS5, so PS4-only players who were planning on getting new hardware anyway might wanna wait for now.
Overall though, I can already tell I'm gonna love this one from top to bottom!
I'm immediately drawn by the art design, I wanna get immersed in it!

What I like about Trials of Mana was it felt exactly like a Dragon Quest game albeit more action oriented.. So i couldn’t help but preorder this one.. I didn’t feel the need to do the demo.. I can already tell it’s up my alley
Oh my gosh the title 😂. As a huge Secret of Mana fan I am so excited for this.
Battles feel like crap, but I'll still give it the ole Steam 2 hour trial. If it doesn't lock me in I'll refund it.

I've just stumbled on this video and love how enthusiastic, gentle natured and softly spoken you are when talking about the game. I played the visions of mana demo for around 30 minutes and I just couldn't get into it but after watching your video I will give it another try (the only mana game I've ever played was secrets of mana on super Nintendo) and I will watch some more of your videos and subscribe 🙂

Maybe the Switch 2? It seems they're struggling to optimize this well for PS4 already, so Switch seems like a long shot to me.
Not a lot of people realize you can change classes in the demo since they don’t really explain it. They started the main character as a super slow class which was a REALLY odd choice imo. Changing to the one handed sword by switching the equipped elemental class made the combat feel a lot more like the recent Trials of Mana remake

Super hype, Secret of Mana was my favorite game back in the day and kickstarted a life-long love affair with ARPG's.
I haven't even played the Visions demo, lol. No need to bother for a game I've already 100% pre-paid and am just waiting for the install prompt. So excited to explore this world.
I enjoyed the combat alot. Morley was my favorite. I couldnt figure out how to assign my combat shortcuts for abilities.
Ramcoh is the little dragons name, in combat she will even fight on her own, even if you don't attack while using Careena. first time I played her it made me think of the dragoon in FF11.

The demo is graphically gorgeous, but in terms of the combat it feels awkward to me. I think it would be a flop if it wasn't in the Mana series.
Going off the demo would you recommend buying the main game? Will you be buying the main game yourself?
@@makefoxhoundgreatagain842 I would not buy the game based solely on this demo. I have no affinity for the Mana series, and the combat seems too simplistic compared to games I already own and have not yet completed. I'm hoping the final game is better, but the current demo does nothing to make me want to buy it on release.
Compared to Trials, the combat is downright awful.

The gorgeous overworld has such a nice look and mood to it i got the same excitement and wonder i had playing xenoblade 1 for the first time. I enjoy the feel of the combat and gameplay mechanics. Cant wait for this!
On topic: I played the demo a while back, really enjoyed it. A lot of people seem to be disliking it, a good amount like it too. I am digging it. I dunno if I dig it enough to buy it full price, especially with Black Myth Wukong, Ys X, DBZ Sparking Zero, and Silent Hill 2 Remake so close, but definitely a game i'll pick up down the line.
I've been replaying the Mana games available on PS5 this summer in anticipation for this game, and coming off those the demo feels amazing. The end of August can't come soon enough!!!
It doesn't feel as snappy as trials, though this was probably intentional. People have mentioned it feels like they're running in mud, which it does a bit, but you get used to it.
They need to fix the camera as well. It randomly zooms out 2 business days so you can barely see the characters, plus when the camera goes behind a tree or rock, that doesn't help.
There are fps drops and stuttering on pc and consoles as well.
I even went back to play trials, and it actually feels better imo.
I'm still excited, and it's a day one for me, but I want this game to be the best it can.
Yeah, I agree that it feels like an intentional gameplay style. Kinda like Monster Hunter or something, mixed with Trials. I'm sure I'll grow into it eventually, but I think Trials was more of my jam.
The important thing is they at least TRIED to implement a performance mode OPTION unlike a lot of cowardly, AAA devs.
Apparently it's a different studio handling it.
@trollingisasport yeah it is. Time will tell I suppose. The camera thing needs addressing 100% though. That's a game breaker for me.
youre running out of MP because your allies have auto casting on which you can turn off in the menu which i highly recommend. makes combat more strategic and fun and similar to the older games

I absolutely loved the demo. It’s everything I hoped it would be.
This is the type of game that I would love to just explore and savour. I can't wait!

I'm still holding off for now because I know playing the demo is going to send my hype through the roof & the full game is still a month away. My willpower is wavering, though!
The demo and the fact that it asked me first thing if I want to prioritize performance sold me. That and it's just an overall game that I was on the fence but leaning towards hyped for but the demo put this firmly in the buy/hyped category

I felt sort of middle of the road about Visions of Mana after playing the demo on PS5. I think I will play it eventually, but probably next year, once it has been discounted. This is coming out in a stacked JRPG year. Just finished Trails Through Daybreak, starting SMTVV soon, and lots of games coming out in the next few months. Metaphor Refantazio and Ys X will likely take my end of the year game money. But I hope this game is fun because the Mana series deserves to have life.

Hello Derek, your Terranigma review caught my attention after watching your channel for a long time and I was wondering if you ever heard of the game CrossCode. I believe that you may find this game as enjoyable as I do because of its many resemblances to Terranigma and its gameplay. I'm sorry if this comment isn't related to the video, but I just wanted to ask. I appreciate all the hard work you put in and the fantastic content, I've been watching you since your Trails in the Sky review.
Okay, I've heard of Crosscode a dozen times or more but now that you mention that it's like Terranigma, this just shot up to priority number 1! 👀
@@SuperDerek I'm so happy to hear that, you're going to love it. Terranigma is one of the best video games on the Super Nintendo and is severely underrated, just like CrossCode. People also compare CrossCode with Zelda due to its puzzles. But because of the graphics, characters and combat the game comes much closer to Terranigma in my opinion.
I don't like the map when trying to see where side quests are
yeah, I hope that they give us more map control. I did run into that where I wanted to zoom in, but never figured out how to do that during my run.
@SuperDerek theres two map modes. You have to press a button to switch to the other one to zoom in and look around. It is a bit off but once you realize its not too bad!
The demo was annoying to find, but I eventually found it on the product page on I think under an ellipses icon.

I wouldnt mind a ff9 remake to look similar or play likewise. not everything has to be like ff7 remake and take millions and millions of dollar 100s of staffers.
why do you want a remake of a game that plays totally different and looks completely different to be like this? would make more sense to just make a new game...
SE killed FF7 for me because they made a totally different game out of it.
I dunno if we played the same demo, this feels like a huge step back from Trials of Mana in almost every way.

The demo, while not perfect, was pretty solid to me. Let's hope that those devs can iron out some of the problems me & other players had with it. We're still another 4 weeks from release so I'd like to believe that this demo was also used to get some feedback for the game.

It does seem like you can equip different kinds of weapons for different move sets, so I think there will at least be something adjacent to class changes, if not more in the full version.
They do, in the depending on what character and what elemental you have equip will change your class.
Demo was nice, though after coming from Granblue Relink, i it feels a bit on the slower side and movement feels a bit clunky at times. Will have to adapt to that.
I feel you. I think this one's trying to be a bit more "weighty" like Monster Hunter, but didn't fully commit to that style. So if you're coming from faster-paced action, I can see that being jarring.
The combat is way too flashy. I hope they add an option to tone it down, because at the moment it’s difficult to keep track of what’s going on.
I downloaded the demo straight onto my PC when I saw the trailer at around 12:30 am with heavy eyes. I think I played for about 3 hours, until the scene with a certain key being returned, and I fell into bed half dead xD
The next morning I downloaded the demo again onto the PS5 because I noticed some technical problems and wanted to have a direct comparison. I'm still torn about whether I should buy it for the Playstation or the PC... aaahhhh!
The frame rate stutters a bit on the PC, even with my 4070. On the Playstation 5 it runs smoothly except in the cutscenes, which are apparently capped at 30fps.
I might wait until the reviews are out so I know WHICH version I'm buying... even if it will seem like an eternity until then and I'll cry myself to sleep at night because I want to play it soooooo much xD
By the way, I only realized when I was playing the PS5 version the next morning that you can play 3 classes per character in the demo. You can either assign them to an elemental spirit, which changes their class or job, or set a character to neutral. I didn't like Val's clumsy fighting style, so I let him fight as a gladiator with a normal one-handed sword. He didn't do that much more damage with the two-handed sword, and the slower speed just wasn't justified for me.
I think waiting is a good idea. Also this is a good time to let Square Enix know about any complaints, while the game is still being developed. So it's good to make your voice heard!
Performance juat wasnt there for me. Even in performance mode, framerate was the most unsteady Ive seen in an ARPG in recent memory. Constant frame drops. Im usually not bothered by that kind of stuff, but it was *that bad* for me. Movement feels like youre swimming through jelly at times. I tried on PS5 and PC and canceled my preorder. Still happy for you if you enjoyed it, but its the most disappointing game Ive played this year (in the sense that my expectations were that far from met.) Cheers!
See, I thought I was having that trouble too actually on my PS5, But in the footage it was all a nice steady smooth 60fps, so I ended up cutting a couple minutes of me talking about that, I think it was an issue with my capture setup causing the weird frame rate issue? But I'm not sure because I can't seem to find any footage of it chugging down. 🤷
I want to play this so bad! But SquareEnix said it's not coming to Switch. I would have accepted it if they had to lower the graphics resolution or something...

The one thing I couldn’t figure out from the video was what kind of demo it is. So it’s not a demo that carries over but is it a demo where it is just showcasing the battle system or does it give you some story and a general overall feel for the game?
I have a tendency to think I won’t like the game when the demo just drops you in the middle of it so it’s better that I don’t play the demo if that’s the case.
Yeah, this is the sort that drops you into the middle of probably chapter 1 or something after an extended proplogue is my guess. So it skips you past a bunch of the beginner tutorial areas, I think, so you get a little dump about the controls of the game to start things off. Just kind of a slice right out of the middle of the beginning of the story, if that makes sense. I'm guessing in-game, the demo is 3 to 5 hours in, by my estimation.
i could have a peek in this game and think it's Genshin Impact (or some other clone of it), it's the same art style (and that's a very good thing)
In point of fact, there wouldn't be Genshin without THE IP THEFT FROM THE MANA SERIES...

Is it me or looks this Game exactly like Genshin Impact???
I played about 10 minutes of it last night and turned it off. I was quite let down. The last game was so delightfully simple and clean this game instantly through multiple different systems and tutorials at me for something that should have just been mash X to swing my sword and maybe hold it down for a charge attack it’s complicated and I’m pretty disappointed
for some reason those over complicated systems is something that bothers me in too many modern games... I just want to play and have fun. sometimes a complex game is fine but often complexity doesn't mean depth
@@nuclearbeeberman Yeah. I think it's overcompensating for bad core design. Just increase the amount of "content" and inflate the value of the game.
The more I played the demo the more I enjoyed their vision.
I do love how fast trials of mana plays but there's a lot of care that went into visions clearly. Each character seems to have a decent of different weapons through their classes and varied plastyles. The class arts are a lot cooler and better this time around. The MP management seems to be a lot more interesting as well with all moves using MP now instead of mostly be magic before
I'm really looking forward to try more classes and the two last characters as they are the two that got me the most curious.
Game looks cool I'll probably get this, but not on release. One thing that really bothers me and it might be petty. The hair of the characters (especially longer hair) looks and is animated so poorly. Looks like this gob of shiny cotton candy and how it moves just looks so bad. Maybe other higher budget games have me spoiled a bit.
Does anybody know if Visions of Mana will be fully released on Switch?
I suspect the Switch isn't up to the task, considering the PS4 struggles at times. Maybe on the Super Nintendo Switch whenever it's announced. :)

I really loved your review of Trials of Mana; in fact, it was one of the reasons I decided to buy the game on Switch. Loved the remake (I never finished the original SNES game). Btw! Even though the following is off topic, have you played Banner of the Maid? It's a really well-made game! Considering that a Chinese independent studio developed it, I was surprised by how well-done the game is. Also, its premise is quite unique: it's a tactical RPG set in XVIIIth France, during the events of the French Revolution. As such, most of your units fire muskets and rifles, while another part of your units are cavalry, both light and heavy. If you haven't played it, try it out! You might like it!

Lets give a hand to Square soft for hiring good voice actors this time. Trails of Mana while I like the game the dub was terrible. I really like Morley's voice in this game.

I'm hoping for a difficulty option, because I'm starting to realize that while I want the games to be accessible for newcomers, I've just been playing these kinds of games for ages, and already have a lot of foundational knowledge that makes a lot of these kinds of games a little too easy.

Am I the only one disappointed by the terrible voice acting and choreography? Maybe my hopes were too high but most of the cut-scenes in the demo felt like an awkward middle-school play. I'm still excited to play...but my expectations have been dampened a bit.
You're probably not the only one, but I think a lot of us expected that this was going to be a AA title. This game will walk so future installments can run, I hope. We'll see!
I never expect anything good from English voiceovers. So it’s not a criticism on this game in particular. On the title screen I switch audio to Japanese immediately.
There is quite a bit of banter among the party as you move through the overworld (Tales style), which was awkward as I had to stop running to read
Please try not to be mad at me, but my friend and I are very sad that we won't be able to share it, unfortunately unlike Trials of Mana, this one doesn't seem to have family loan. With my friend and I, with expensive games like this we usually pay for it in half and share it, thanks to the new feature that Steam implemented for family groups. It will also bring Denuvo :/

Never played GI, but this doesn't have gacha, which I think is a pretty important distinction.
Genshin Impact has recently started to take its puzzle-solving ideas from Zelda. hahahaha
Unplayable! Beautiful visuals.
IDK to me it was a clunky mess with some of the worst character models ever. Trails of Mana felt like it was running at 75% speed too. I just don't get the series I guess because combat is the most important thing to me. A good story is nice but it's secondary to combat and when games like GranBllue exist I just cannot give this game a pass for being so clunky.
In Steam people are saying bad things about it, makes me feel nervious.
PS5 worked well for me, but PC sometimes doesn't get the attention it deserves. I'd definitely look into the Steam demo if you're potentially playing on PC.
I'm hearing Steam version has issues with stutter and weird delay when navigating shop menus
@@SuperDerek Whenever I think about my Childhood, the first thing that comes to mind is Secret of Mana. Really have huge and wonderful memories playing that game and I wish the Mana series don't die. Will still buy the game regardless, I am positive the issue will be patched ❤️
Art style is out of touch with what I expected. They used to be THE best looking 2d game, and now there is no watercolor look n feel anymore
I was hyped for this game until I played the demo. It's a stuttering mess, shader compilation is broke. I hope it's fixed for the full game.

Battles are boring and chaotic , only button smashing... Not funny at all. Ys action jrpg have much better combat system...probably it will have good reviews only because is a "mana" title.
