Seriously! I am so grateful that we even have lunar discussions in 2024 and have a new release in 2025! I was so emotional and hyped Wednesday morning when I heard the announcement since I missed the state of play. Just so thankful!
This is the first I'm hearing of this. Lunar is the game I have the most nostalgia for. I played the first one for what seemed like my entire seventh grade summer on the Sega CD. It's very exciting news to me.
“Lunar: Silver Star Story complete “ for PS1 timeless. Happy to see Lunar comes back every decade or two. To good of a game to be forgotten. Never played the second one. But the first one, wow.
I absolutely, positively LOVED the dialogues and goofy references in the Working Designs versions of the games. Feeling you that if they aren’t mentioned there will be some sad moments. I’m playing these remasters anyway, but there will be moments I’ll miss.
@clanpsi while Lunar 2 is my favorite game of all time it's not soooo much better than Lunar 1 , my second favorite of all time. For example playing Lunar 2 without playing Lunar 1 first would make Lunar 2 not quite as good.
@mrhodes3140 Sega CD had the better intro, better music, actual overworld exploration, better spell and skill effects, better spritework, darker more mature story, characters weren't turned kiddie and cringey, more secrets to find, Ruby had a magic exp level up system, better UI etc etc
I am over the moon that Lunar is coming back! And on all platforms, and it seems to be getting a normal physical release! I've never gotten to play Eternal Blue before, so I'm really excited about that especially. And Atelier Resleriana getting a single-player console game is wonderful as well, and I'm so happy to see the Mana series and the Pixel Remasters on Xbox! It seems like Square Enix is already putting their multi-plarform plan into action, and the more people that these games are available to, the better!
Lunar was the game that got me into JRPGs if the VO is different it is gonna be super sureal for me. I'll be picking it up no matter what, but it may feel not quite right. Like a fever dream.
I knew I could count on you for some Lunar Collection excitement. 😉 Very much looking forward to this release! I’m currently replaying Lunar SSSC, but I think I can be convinced to re-replay it next year. 😝
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue is my favorite game of all time, so I am very excited to finally see it get to modern consoles! Whenever people ask me what my favorite game is, I always say "It's on PS1 and Sega CD, so you'll probably never play it", but not anymore!
Ive been waiting for you to go over Lunar. I first played Lunar 2 in 2001 and it has been my favorite game to this day, I played Silver Star the following year :D. I loved all the weird quirks of the ps1 version. I was so happy when i seen this announcement. It sounds like a different vocalist singing the Silver Star opening music to me but didnt sound bad. Im hopeful for this and will be getting it as soon as possible. Overall im just happy GungHo listened to fans and brought it back after they brought grandia back. Also really love that they arent (from the looks of it) trying to change the game from what it was/is allowing us old fans to still enjoy it with some QOL changes.
It's funny because when everyone is talking about the 90s references everyone is remembering a different line that stood out to them. The one that comes to mind is an NPC (I think early on) that makes a comment about "eating their Wheaties!" Which the Wheaties cereal had a lot of athlete endorsements in the 90s/00s for anyone reading this that doesn't know lol
That's the most memorable one for me, possibly because I watched the making of disc a lot and they mention how the original Japanese mentioned eating onion, because Japanese farmer will eat raw onions in the morning for strength.
Working Designs JRPGs were always fun to play. Other JRPGs from other companies had bland translations that never quite made sense like a character laughing about something being red probably was some Japanese pun that doesn't directly translate well and they never did try to convey the same feeling with something just as funny.
If they do retranslate Lunar, my guess is that GungHo thinks all the 90s references and jokes won't really land for younger players who may be picking Lunar up for the first time. I watched a younger millennial play the PS1 version and there were a lot of lines and gags that went over their head, and they weren't even Gen Z or Gen Alpha. Either way, I'm pumped for the remaster, especially Lunar Eternal Blue!
So happy this series is making a comeback. I loved these as a kid, and will be keeping my fingers crossed that we get a sexy black leather book to go with these too
The Lunar Remastered is a dream come true. Lunar is probably the game i have the most nostalgia about. I spent my whole seventh grade summer playing it on the Sega CD, it was one of the very few games worth owning the system for. Then played both one and two on the Playstation in my early twentys. Now if only we can get a Skys of Arcadia reremastered for a newer generation my life will be complete lol.
lunar's localization was a masterpiece. Didn't change anything meaningful in the story but sure as hell made every NPC worth talking to at least twice. If the NPCs aren't fun to talk to, I'd rather just play the original
@@SuperDerek Base on what you shared in the video I am guessing the reason Lunar is getting a new English translation could be due to that some of the dialogue in the original translation is likely dated at this point. You did bring up there were pop culture references in the original translation, but I can imagine that people picking up this game who were not around during that time might either not get the references or it might go over there heads. So in this case Lunar getting a new English translation would make sense. Besides if the story is good I trust the NPC dialogue from the original Japanese version would be entertaining enough as well. I look forward to playing this remaster as I always been interested in giving the Lunar series a try.
@@Aquablossom21it doesn't say new translation it says newly recorded voice acting. When they have the opening song, the lyrics line up with the Working designs translation.

Hoping this is a jump off point for bringing back the Lunar Series and giving us long term diehard Lunar fans the Lunar 3 we have been waiting so long for.
Thanks James! I've been taking some time for myself these last few weeks, embracing some other hobbies and considering the future of the channel. I have some really neat ideas that excite me, but I wonder how well my viewers would take to them. I think I'm approaching a new evolution point for the channel I think, and it's exciting, but also kinda scary. :)
Threads of Time looks so good. LUNARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I loved the Working Designs localization. My brother and I cracked up so much during it. I played when the games first came out so would've been late 90s so I would've been in my late teens. Fantastic time.
I'm just happy we're getting a playable version of Eternal Blue on modern consoles. Lunar SSS already has an abundance of ports and remakes, but nobody ever bothered to touch Eternal Blue in all that time
Every time I go there, I realize that some people will _never_ be pleased, by anything, ever. Where have all of the people who actually _like_ RPGs gone???
@@SuperDerek It's just another manifestation of toxic, obnoxious elitism imo. It seems to gradually infect and spread through every fandom eventually. I appreciate that you choose not to engage with it and push positivity rather than feeding into the negativity circle. 😊
Just added Threads of Time to my wish list on Series X so I don't forget about it, that looks absolutely amazing. More jrpgs with graphics on par with Sea of Stars, possibly even surpassing them? I'm so down to clown. Right now I'm playing Refantazio as an old school Persona fan (need to get into SMT someday, but backlog) and it took me a while to get into it with all the jaggies/frame drops, but about 2 hours in the addiction hit me hard. It's so much fun to play and the story is actually engaging.
So excited about the Lunar news! Can't wait to play them again and add them to my Lunar collection. They used the intro song from Complete rather than Harmony which had me confused. I do like how they did the title at the end accompanied by "When two brilliantly shine as one." 😁 I didn't know it until seeing your message during the video but I would be totally down for a Lunar Tactics game. Make it a prequel during the final days of the Blue Star
That would be sweet! But honestly, I'd love a chance to officially play Walking School / Magic School Lunar at some point, even if they're not universally loved. 🥲
@SuperDerek Yes I've been saying the same thing! It is a shame Magic School isn't included as a bonus to complete that "era" of Saturn games. No doubt because of some if the content localization would be a controversial nightmare. Poor Ellie and the gang get no love
I think level 5 is spreading themselves way to thin. They have all these projects, but not a single solid release date for any of them and that doesn't seem to stop them from announcing new projects on top of them.
Had to stop the video just write Derek i am so happy that you playing DnD again! Because i remember you saying that you were feeling down since you moved to the new house that you had to leave your old table behind and man that just sucks. I am happy that you are playing again.
I'm thinking Victor Ireland probably still owns the rights to the WD localization, and he hasn't seemed super eager to play ball lately (see the Genesis Mini 2 not including Lunar 1 & 2 in the US). But man, I'm so hyped for this, I NEVER would have imagined this getting a remaster and I'm so happy it is.
I totally agree with everything you said about Lunar remastered! The way I see it, it didn't really need updates aside from speeding up battle (optionally). A port with that feature would have been fine.
But you know, I'm glad more people are going to have a chance to play the games anyway, even if I'll do still end up preferring my PS1 releases in the end. :)
Great news, everyone! I am a long time Lunar fan, even covered like 95% of its OST (a little self-promotion). But I was actually hoping they would do a complete remake in the 3D environment, as I have played every possible version, even the GBA port))
I will definitely buy the Lunar collection next year for the Switch! Also, I hope Aquaplus releases the Utawarerumono trilogy in English on the Switch!
Recently got Lunar Silver Star Story Complete on ps1 (literally a couple months ago). Ive been taking a break from my first playthrough, and was thinking if just waiting now for the collection to get back to it. Although now since you mentioned theyre doing new voices, I'll probably continue the ps1 version. The stuff they say and some of the jokes are absolutely hilarious. Some jokes a definitely on the line of what offends people nowadays, but that's absolutely a lot of the charm of the game imo.
I always loved Working Designs translations, but obviously, back then, I didn't know as much with localizations and translations as I do now, near 30 years later(dang crazy to say 30 years D0=). I thought they were fun, but I'm also curious how the new voices and(if they do retranslate) localization will make the game. I have the original PSX games if I want pure nostalgia, so I wouldn't mind having a new version to tackle(though I feel sad that newer players can't have the same experience I had).
You sure they're not using Working Designs original script as a base? The opening track has the same lyrics as the Complete version. Is there something about the song rights that lets them use the lyrics and not the game's script? I need more info on this! :)
I always want to play some retro games, but in over half the time, the moment I'm thinking about playing on some weeks later a remaster or remake is announced. Which helps with my video game goal to at least play 1 entry of ever good or big JRPG series, on the other hand I almost never play a game I bought immediately. So it ends up in my backlog. But I might play Metaphor ReFantazio at release, even tough the stuff about walktroughs. It's just so fun.
Someone else told me this the other day, and I'm inclined to agree -- sometimes, buying and collecting RPGs is just another hobby in and of itself. Playing the games is just the cherry on top! 😅
I am really looking forward to the Lunar remaster I remember getting these on PS1 and enjoyed that version but I still would like to get this one on new steam platform. I have been follwoing the Threads of Time on their Discord server, they are still uncertain if they are going to do a Kickstarter but the game looks great and the world they have written so far seems very interesting.
I've never beaten either of them but I gotten pretty far through Eternal Blue with the Sega CD version and have played the original and some more accurate translations. Honestly, I dunno if I'll miss the old WD translation. Maybe because I still have it somewhere I can always go back.
I own both the Lunar games for PS1 and the PSP game. I'm excited to play the game the way Game Arts intended for a change and see the og dialog. If I want stretch armstrong jokes I still have the ps1 versions.
I appreciate when people can take that approach to remakes and remasters. The OG exists for people who require it, but playing it in a new way is also exciting. :)
Hey, notice a lot is mention about the sega cd and ps1 versions, this is a remastered graphic upgrade. Did you ever play the psp version those graphics were a complete overhaul. But the game it self played "rushed" if that makes sense. Did you ever play that version?
Really hoping threads of time gets a physical version 🥰 would prefer to have it on the switch, however even if it’s just on ps4 or ps5 I’ll be content with that. The game looks amazing… however I won’t be getting it if it’s not available physically. Just found a game called Altered Alma or kickstarter game looked interesting so I decided to back it🤔 hopefully my choice will bare fruit. In all honesty Atelier Yumia looks way more interesting and intriguing then Atelier Resleriana, however I like the series so I may check more into the game as the release date comes closer. Wonderful video and content thanks again ❤❤
Man I really want Decapolice, "mystery RPG" is an underexplored concept, but it would be better if they took their time and not put out something undercooked.
@@FoxbatStargazer Oh that's a really interesting take, and entirely possible that it's being delayed due to the coordination efforts. Multimedia endeavors have a LOT of moving parts!
I shed tears of joy. I dropped the food I was eating. I screamed oh my God. Oh my God, I shed tears of joy. I was so excited, especially since the original opening theme song because the PSP remake. Other than the opening with the four heroes I hated it simply for changing the opening song and the boat song. I might have got past the opening song but the boat song being changed
Popsicle here (You know, because of the stick up my butt)! I just don't think anything in rereleases should be changed unless it's a clear improvement like the iron boots in Ocarina of Time. If video games are art, well art is a product of its time. Supposedly younger generations watch old TV shows more than newer ones, and part of them partaking in that art is trying to understand the references of that time. We wouldn't dub over old sitcoms with new lines just so people have modern references, would we? I don't seek to be "hurt" by changes to my favorite art, but it happens. My favorite game is Super Mario RPG, but I didn't buy the remake because the changes, though small, were a turnoff for me. It's kinda like, "Why feel sad playing something when there's an alternative that makes me happy instead?" Luckily in the case of Lunar I haven't played the originals and can't be hurt by any alterations, even if I am against them in principle.
4:00 I agree and not only the subreddit, the jRPG crowd has been really terrible as of late. Not sure what happened. My guess is that there are so much games readily available on all platforms that we feel really stuffed and not wanting. This helps us be very dismissive of everything that is not suited exactly to our taste and is not looking top notch at the same time. Having good amount of choice is not bad by any means but it seems that it shows how much the western jRPG crowd was not one crowd and actually more separate crowds brought together by their love for vague similar underserved niches. 13:20 And that... THAT, man! That's the worse. I hate how some people start feeling like creative writing and localization experts just because they watched 5 animes in the past.
Could just be the fact there are more video game players and thus more people, I have seen communities collapse as they expand or take in new blood, it's sadly the reason I also don't visit those communities anymore because I no longer recognise them for the user base they used to have.
"Some people got a stick up their butt about localization at this point". Absolutely agree. Be happy we're getting these games. DQ III is another great example. I'm thrilled that we're getting a remastered version. Stop complaining about the translation of a stinkin' video game.
@@Spectral_Waves I disagree. You need both for a balanced discussion. I tire of people pretending bad games are good. Complaining legit points are fine. Dont just wave off criticism because you like a product.
@@Spectral_Waves And many gamers are tired of developers and publishers pushing their own ideologies onto them through localization that intentionally misrepresents the source material.
I bought Lunar: Silver Star Story for Sega CD in the 5th grade (I'm 40 now) and I think it would feel pretty foreign to me without the whacky ass WD localization. Even from the ps1 version.
Ive always looked at this rpg lunar' with so much curiosity and fascination, but the time, money and console triangulare lock, always found me unnable to play it. It's time i get my revenge on fate 😁
Can we just talk about how we haven't had a remake of Chrono trigger yet. An epic ff7 style rebirth Chrono trigger. Honestly also Nintendo should do an entire remake of earthbound
Threads Of Time looks good but I'd rather we get like an HD-2D remaster of Chrono Trigger with the anime cutscenes remastered maybe with even the Japanese voices. The next best thing would be to remake Chrono Cross as well with the 'fat' trimmed from the game (i.e. all of those optional recruitable characters and instead stick with the main ones only) and maybe change the battle system back to CT style. They should definitely do a PS5 re-release collection of Adventure of Mana, Secret of Mana, and Trials of Mana (the remakes). Why is Triangle Strategy coming to Meta and not PS5? 🤦♂ Who would've thought they would remaster the Lunar games? I'm excited. Maybe they'll do the Arc The Lad games too later? I am surprised that they're next release isn't a Grandia Xtreme and Grandia III remaster collection. Dragon Quest III HD-2D looks good and I hope they keep up with these releases with the others.
I'm one of those people who have a stick up their butts about localization. That includes old-school Working Designs and modern day PC-culture vandalism. I just want it to be true to the Japanese. I think we live in a world where we should finally be getting that, but in some ways, we've looped back around with these localizations. No political agendas, self-indulgent humor, censorship, or "jelly donuts" for me.
I played the Metaphor demo and enjoyed it quite a bit! As someone who isn't a fan of modern settings in games this change to fantasy with the persona formula helped me like it a lot more. If I have one major complaint, its the main character who screams wussy boy of the year. If I had not named him Poopboy he would have absolutely zero redeeming features. With that even if he is a remotely controlled pure ball of cringe, he can at least make me laugh when someone uses his name in the serious dialogue. I understand why atlus needs to make their protagonists gender-neutral since its supposed to represent you the player who could be male or female. But I wish they would just give a male and female version skin, so I could pick the female version, who would somehow still seem more manly.
Super hyped for the Lunar collection and DQ III HD-2D After finishing the demo for Metaphor i couldn't help but feel extremely disappointed. It just feels like a PSP RPG with its small areas and constant loading screens. The story seems decent, but I wasn't a huge fan of the characters or art style
You said it - the Reddit JRPG is so damn depressing and TOXIC (and dull sometimes!) I am so glad you brought this up because I've been feeling exactly the same and I honestly feel a bit validated now :)
When Derek talks about localization, i felt kinda hit. I was pretty mad about it in Eiyuden Chronicles. The response i got was that it wasnt better before, and people are right, it wasnt. BUT. There was no political agenda, i just want to play an rpg without politics. There was no politics in the old localization, just bad translations. Just wish that wasnt the case. Love the video tho, lotta hype!!

Let's hope they port Walking School Lunar next! ;)
Definitely agree with you about sticky butts! I loved the Working Design translations. They were charming!
Thank you for the update Derek.
You bet! Thanks for watching Steven! :D
Lunar silver star harmonies a awesome version! Hopefully it gets ported to Switch one day also.
I still can't believe lunar is coming back, I'm still in disbelief
@@SuperDerek Can't deny that. Bought some games I was never going to replay or not even start.
Legend and trials of mana are out on game pass
So retranslate in remaster is viable so ..trails cold steel 1&2 can happen.../compium
metaphor ReFantazio looks to be download only for ps4 in some countries like the uk >.
Oof! That can't be right, can it? Luckily PS4 is region-free, so hopefully you can import a copy if you only have a PS4 for now.
Guess it’s safe to say that like myself you were over the moon for the Lunar announcement 😂
I never did, I started to but it felt "weird" without the Working Designs localization. :-P
Wonderful video and content thanks again ❤❤
your room looks so cozy
i came here because i thought there was a new lunar silver star story. but wow i'm not disappointed!
GameArts, the developers, went under a long time ago. Remasters are about all we can hope for at this point. 🥲
Man I really want Decapolice, "mystery RPG" is an underexplored concept, but it would be better if they took their time and not put out something undercooked.
I wonder if the Lunar remaster is going to have the bromides too!
It's got to, right? It's a _core_ gameplay mechanic, right? 🤣
Lunar really diserved a good remake. Not a FF7 type remake but a Trails in the Sky type remake.
I won't be able to hold myself here: LUCIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if holding to 2026 decca police is to avoid politics? Similar to advanced wars on switch, which came out much later due to Ukraine etc.
Its because they are spinning up an anime for release at the same time. I bet the game is done well before then.
@@FoxbatStargazer Oh that's a really interesting take, and entirely possible that it's being delayed due to the coordination efforts. Multimedia endeavors have a LOT of moving parts!
IT'S LUUUUUUUNNNNNNAAAAAAARRRRRRR!!!!!!
I'm loving the titles!! Hahahahahaha!!
While editing, I was gradually getting myself more and more hyped about this collection coming out! :D
Now all we need is vanguard bandits
I shed tears of joy. I dropped the food I was eating. I screamed oh my God. Oh my God, I shed tears of joy. I was so excited, especially since the original opening theme song because the PSP remake. Other than the opening with the four heroes I hated it simply for changing the opening song and the boat song. I might have got past the opening song but the boat song being changed
Stoked for lunar.
Dooooobs!
Not get weird on you. I just listen to you the happy console gamer all day
I really need to do another collab with John sometime. Hopefully next time I'm back in the Pacific northwest. :D
People can complain if they want. Toxic positivity is just as bad. Let people form an opinion and purchase as necessary
@@omensoffate people complaining are part of what's wrong with the gaming industry tho.
@@Spectral_Waves I disagree. You need both for a balanced discussion. I tire of people pretending bad games are good. Complaining legit points are fine. Dont just wave off criticism because you like a product.
@@omensoffate I'm tired of gamers always acting entitled acting like devs owe them everything.
@@Spectral_Waves And many gamers are tired of developers and publishers pushing their own ideologies onto them through localization that intentionally misrepresents the source material.
how do you feel about the dragon quest 3 censorship controversy
Derek, please make some room for Triangle Strategy. The game is fantastic!
TGS and Playstation SOP showed so many turn based RPG games.
Been playing as a bard eh......
SPOONY BARD!!! 😂
We're only 2 sessions in, but I'm getting waaaay too into it!
Remember remember the fifth of November
I bought Lunar: Silver Star Story for Sega CD in the 5th grade (I'm 40 now) and I think it would feel pretty foreign to me without the whacky ass WD localization. Even from the ps1 version.
Ive always looked at this rpg lunar' with so much curiosity and fascination, but the time, money and console triangulare lock, always found me unnable to play it. It's time i get my revenge on fate 😁
Loving the remasters!! Sega! Do Panzer Dragoon Saga!!
Can we just talk about how we haven't had a remake of Chrono trigger yet.
An epic ff7 style rebirth Chrono trigger.
Honestly also Nintendo should do an entire remake of earthbound
You look like the sort of guy who burns in-scents and asks for fronts on quarter bags
Who would've thought they would remaster the Lunar games? I'm excited. Maybe they'll do the Arc The Lad games too later? I am surprised that they're next release isn't a Grandia Xtreme and Grandia III remaster collection.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D looks good and I hope they keep up with these releases with the others.
Pixels remaster is already out on xbox. Bought it yesterday...lol
We shall see what the end results are. Lunar hasn't exactly had any stellar releases since the original two. :)
That forge of the fae interview slapped, ESPECIALLY when he said there WILL be waterfalls with secret caves! :O
I know! So incredibly stoked! I hope there are town wells in need to exploring!
@@SuperDerek For sure! One of the best parts of the DQ series imo haha
But nothing beats a jelly donut...
OH SNAP YOU GOT FACIAL HAIR NOW!
Super hyped for the Lunar collection and DQ III HD-2D
After finishing the demo for Metaphor i couldn't help but feel extremely disappointed. It just feels like a PSP RPG with its small areas and constant loading screens. The story seems decent, but I wasn't a huge fan of the characters or art style
😊
You said it - the Reddit JRPG is so damn depressing and TOXIC (and dull sometimes!) I am so glad you brought this up because I've been feeling exactly the same and I honestly feel a bit validated now :)
I thought _I_ was the crazy one for feeling this way!
The old Lunar translation was really unprofessional tho.
Yeah, it's was great!
