My father told me that! But that is really cool to know. The reason why they did that cover is because Africa is *very* poor back then. So that song is what made people donate and made Africa’s situation much more better than before.

The collaboration came together after British pop stars made a song called they do know it's Christmas time at all for Africa Famine. This song was the USA's contribution.

I always thought it was dope how Michael really took a backseat in this song and let OG's like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder (among others of course) carry the heavy load. Make no mistake about it, out of all the superstars in that room, Michael was THE BIGGEST by far at that time period, like not even close. I heard Quincy Jones put a sign up that said "CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR", and they all really took that to heart. I don't even know if they could pull something like this off today cuz every singer would want to sing lead.

The initiator for this was Harry Belafonte, possibly the top calypso singer, who had the idea after Do They Know It’s Christmas from Band Aid. And he never got a solo line in the song. He’s in the chorus next to Dan Akroyd.

I was 9 when this ong came out in 1985. USA for Africa recorded it for free because Ethiopia, was experiencing a severe famine at the time.Through the sale of the album, I think USA for Africa raised about 65 million dollars, which they then donated to various charities that could provide relief.
I used to know all the lyrics, because our music teacher would always have us sing it in class. It always felt special to hear it played.

I'm impressed you actually knew some of their names. It's absolutely boggles my mind how many younger people have no idea who these people are. These are legends that are the foundation of every song every music that you listen to today. with the internet which brings entire world to your fingertips, it amazes me that these people aren't known by everyone. But I'm impressed you actually knew who at least some were including Diana Ross. Course everybody knows Michael. Lol this kind of collaboration could never work today. There was a remake of newer artists but nowhere near the caliber of artists of these people were in this day. The artist in the remake we're basically just wanting a boost to their careers, and I'm assuming they got paid for it because I can't imagine anybody today would agree to do anything without getting money for it. But in the 80s this was sung by Legends who had already made their careers and nobody got paid. Of course there are egos, but they were willing to set that aside for the greater good. Name anything today where you can say the same. Also you don't have a Michael Jackson to bring everybody together. Only someone of his power and his clout could bring together all of these Legends and get them to participate without getting paid. He co-wrote it and he arranged it and he got everybody together and although he sang in it and he took a backseat. All of these Legends are used to having the spotlight but they were willing to sit back saying few lines and then sing in the choir and be content. Imagine anything like that now because I can't.g

Lionel Richie co-wrote this with Michael Jackson and it was produced by Quincy Jones. It was for charity. It was for famine relief in Africa. USA stands for "United support of Artists". They were trying to feed starving people in Africa.
All of these artists were in attendance at the Grammy's in 1985 and gathered in a studio after the awards to record the song. MJ tried to get prince on the song but instead Prince contributed to a song to the "We are the world" album.
Janet Jackson did not participate on this version of the song. LaToya Jackson did. In 2010, There was a 25th anniversary version of the song done for the earthquake that happened in Haiti. On that version, Janet sang along to a sample of Michael's original vocals, at Kathrine Jackson's request.

    Since you asked
So, Quincy came up with the idea, then phoned up Lionel and Micheal since he knew they’d do it best and have it done the fastest. As MJ described they goofed around for two days, then he had an epiphany and on the third morning came to the studio with an almost finished song. He put in a little melody Lionel thought of before and then together they worked on refining it. Then after a musical award gala they gathered everyone who was up to it and spent the night recording. And bam it’s complete. ☺️

In the 80’s famine in Ethiopia was one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the 20th century. Many people wanted to help in any way they could. When images of starving Ethiopians started making its way to the west, it wasn’t hard to get the biggest entertainers on the planet to check their egos at the door to do something for their fellow man. In the UK a supergroup was formed. They released a fairly patronizing song called “Do they know it’s Christmas?” to benefit famine in Ethiopia. American actor/singer Harry Belafonte was both inspired by the idea and offended by the tone deaf delivery of the UK song. He enlisted some American musicians to create a more respectful USA version. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Stevie wonder, and Lionel Richie were charged with creating the song. Stevie eventually had to drop out of co-writing the song because he was busy writing for a movie soundtrack. Michael wrote the majority of the lyrics himself. He and Lionel Richie share songwriting credits. Prince was supposed to sing a part together with Michael (which would’ve been epic) and also the line “if you just believe there’s no way we can fall” but he dropped out of the project. One of his former protégés wrote in her book that Prince hated the song that’s why he didn’t do it. Lionel Richie said he spent hours on the phone trying to convince Prince to come down to the studio. Prince wanted to record alone. Then he offered to just play guitar on the track. Quincy Jones was upset with Prince’s offer and decided to go on without him.
The recording of the song was after the 1985 AMA. The participating artists went straight to the recording studio after the show. Prince got some backlash because against his manager’s advice, he went to the AMA after party instead. He did contribute a solo song to the “We are the world” album so he definitely supported the project. Eddie Murphy turned down a chance to participate because he was recording his album. He later said he regretted this decision.
At the end of the song- in typical MJ fashion-he added the nonsense line: sha lum sha lin gay. Some of the artists fear it might come off as mocking. Stevie came up with the idea to instead say something in Swahili at the end. The country artist Waylon Jennings got upset and left saying “no good ol’ boy sings in Swahili.” Others also objected to this. Instead of the nonsense line or the Swahili version they decided on the English line “one world, our children.” The majority of artists in attendance preferred this-including Harry Belafonte who envisioned a respectful tribute. Waylon Jennings was not seen in the video or any group photos but he was still credited on the track.
46 artists participated and about 50 had to be turned away (including country artist John Denver). Madonna was not invited because some of her fellow musicians in attendance didn’t think she deserved to be there. Madonna was not well respected by her peers during that time. Whitney wasn’t on the track because her debut album didn’t drop until a couple of weeks after “We are the world” was recorded. She was still unknown.
When this single became the biggest selling single, many artists regretted not participating. There are actually behind the scenes footage on TH-cam and I believe there’s a behind the scenes special with Lionel Richie recounting how it all came together.

The Swahili never made it in because Bruce Springsteen had to tell them that Ethiopians dont speak Swahili lol....that would have been awkward. @@deesee3622 You’re right about the fact that the long and tense debate was finally settled when the group was informed that Ethiopians don’t speak Swahili. Bruce Springsteen was not the one to inform them otherwise he would’ve spared them the tense argument if he knew all along. Stevie Wonder secretly brought two Ethiopian friends to thank the group. They were able to inform the group that Ethiopians don’t speak Swahili and settle the dispute.

You might see conflicting information about how this idea came to fruition-even among some of the artists who were there and in interviews and documentaries. One of the reasons for this is because there was an emphasis back then in creating positive narratives about celebrities and projects they’re associated with. PR managers worked overtime to sell these narratives to a very receptive public. Many fans wanted to believe their favorite stars were molded in perfection rather than flawed and very much human with complex emotions just like you and I. There was no internet back then to give the “real tea” or expose the truth behind this public relations wall. I’ve found that the real truth often comes from memoirs and books written by people who were present at the time and choose to confess or set the record straight years later.
Many of my comments sometimes rub fans the wrong way because fans want to believe those PR stories about their favorite artists. But I think it’s important to be grounded in reality. If you Google it, most reputable information sources will confirm that the idea to do a USA version of the UK “supergroup “ was the brainchild of Harry Belafonte not Micheal, Lionel, or Quincy. There were some tense creative disagreements as one would expect from a room full of creatives, but they were all mostly committed to the purpose of the song. Stevie wonder brought in two Ethiopian friends who talked about what was happening in their country. They moved the group to tears. The making of this song wasn’t seamless by any means, but they got it done.
I love most of these artists I comment on-even the ones I’m seemingly critical of. Their triumph and success is inspiring. Their missteps and misgiving is reassuring that no one is perfect. They’re human above all else. I identify with their humanity.
Janet was another big name not on the track. In 1984 at age 16, she secretly married James Debarge of the group Debarge. This caused estrangement from her family (with the exception of Latoya). She got her marriage annulled a few months after “we are the world” was recorded, fired her dad as her manager and started recording her breakout album “Control.” She released it in 1986 and became a superstar in her own right.

FYI- Janet was 18 in ‘84. She was born in ‘66.

Allegedly prince was asked to be a part of this but because he didn’t have a major singing part or had a major spotlight like Michael he turned it down, I guess he couldn’t leave his ego at the door

Yup that's correct. He's pretty much the one of the few big stars from this period that wasn't there, along with Madonna (I almost said Whitney, but I'm not sure if her debut had come out yet).
