That song at the end you want to check out(Judgement & Punishment) is kind of a spin of their metal style mixed with a reggae vibe, its super cool im sure you would enjoy it.
Jinjer is one of those bands that even though they aren't super original or innovative they do what they do so well that I can't even complain. Like you said, they are elite when it comes to groovy syncopation. They also put on a hell of a live show. Saw them in a small, intimate club literally 5 minutes away from me, and they had as much energy as if they were performing at Wacken. Was also really impressed with one of their opening acts that night called Sumo Cyco. They actually gave Jinjer a run for their money in terms of energy/intensity, though with a really different style (more a pop-punk-metal hybrid).
The fact they sound great live makes them starkly original. How many bands have you seen live? Most suck ass. Either the singer isn't good live or the band is too drunk or lazy to do a simple sound check. Metal was dying out just a couple years ago because of this. Jinjer is one of those very few bands that are even better live. There are maybe only a handful of other bands you can say this about. In fact, they built their fan base on the strength of their live shows. In today's market that makes them original.
@@rofyle Seen many bands live and the quality indeed varies dramatically. Jinjer are certainly up there, but plenty of other metal bands are great live too: Meshuggah, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Tool, etc. Metal was in no way "dying out" before Jinjer came along.
@@CriticalReactions Awesome, I'll have to check it out. I did subsequently check out their studio music, and while I enjoyed it, it was much better seeing/hearing them live. Singer was literally a foot away from me at one point initiating a jump pit.
I'm not sure exactly why, but I did not like this song much, right until the live in Kiev version came out, which pushed it way up for me. You're spot on about the video / topic of the song. The dude starts with his passion of photographing, but then puts his camera down for the briefcase, at first kinda fighting with it. Later he gets shot by someone higher up than him, but doesn't die, I assume because personally he is already kind of dead anyway, so he only finally dies when the guy hits his briefcase, his career. I think it is an odd video and I don't like it too much either, but I guess it fits explaining the song a bit (if you understand it at least, I see lots of people just getting confused). Metalcore fits more to their old stuff.
lol, the verse is my favorite part of this song. The riff is simple, but the vocals complement it so perfectly, it creates a feel that makes me want to jump on my chair. One of the more straightforward songs on the album. I promise song 2 (Pit of Consciousness) has riffs with more notes. Song 3, Judgement (& Punishment), is the one you heard at the end of the video. Has one cool aspect to it
Pit of consciousness and judgement & punishment are both so strong in their own sense. From the last few tracks on macro, Home back and noah always get me jamming out hard. Its a great release, but 4 of the 9 songs stand out in my opinion, maybe retrospection in there aswell. Cant pick a favorite
Finally, more Jinjer!! I was almost giving up on you! :) Hell of a song, I personally love the chorus but that´s a matter of taste. Another great reaction, always great to hear your input on the more technical side of the music. You really gotta react to more of this amazing band and some live ones like in Wacken or live in Kiev where the sound is very good. And yes go for that track that you heard on youtube suggestion, it´s the track that follows this one. It´s a blast!! Actually can I give you a suggestion? React to the first 4 tracks (number 1 you already done it in this video) in Macro, they are really really good and special in their own way. Would really love to hear your input on those 3 tracks left and your reaction to the suprises they hold like the infusion of a completely different genre in one of them and a very clear non-western (as you say) melody and feel in another one. I just got done rewatching your jinjer videos today and wandered when you were gonna do more lol. But you def gotta do more like I speak astronomy and more of their live stuff like pit of consciousness in Kiev.
You should react to Home Back by Jinjer. You said jazz, classical, blues vibes really stand out to you in heavier music. I feel like this track fits perfectly into what you described.
Interesting reaction, You should try No hoard of Value, probably my favorite jinjer song. Unfortunately there is not so much reaction to it. I love the music. Emotive and meaningful lyrics.
The Anchor - The Hardest Part Ankor - Nana two songs that randomly popped into my recommendation list that were fun to listen to. Took me by surprise might be worth a reaction.
That's what I do around here at *critical* reactions. I give praise where it's deserved but I will 100% talk about things that either don't work musically or don't necessarily work for me. Feel free to stick around the channel if that's what you're looking for.
Jinjer was my favorite metal band for a while, but i prefer their old stuff. It was more raw i dont know, groovy is cool but their old stuff is wild. I liked the open sound guitar tone. The 2 latest albums have a more closed/compact heavy tone that i didnt enjoy that much
I agree to you in some sense that their older stuff had more raw aggression to it. But i almost feel the opposite where it is quite bland in emotional storytelling compared to their new stuff. But thats why music is so awesome, subjectivity. Cheers
I, for one, am glad that they moved away from the Metalcore scene completely. I like what's different instead of what's repeated 1000 times across multiple bands.
My favorite thing about metal is it speaking to me and making me want to bang my head, and their older stuff definitely does that more than the newer stuff, due to crazy timing and beats. The new stuff isn't bad, in fact, holy shit it is super technical and amazing, but I can't bang my head to it ;-) Give me the Inhale Don't Breath - King of Everything era
The story takes root in their hometown of Donetsk, Ukraine, where such destinies, off to the top and down to the grave, fast track both ways, were the common lot for many people over there, before the war started in 2014.
IMO jinjer's best album was Cloud Factory from a while ago, when they were a lot groovier and less progressive. In their new material, the djenty stuff is usually hit or miss, but the clean stuff is usually always good. If you're interested, I'd reccomend who is gonna be the one or cloud factory or captain clock for reactions (album versions, since their live stuff usually has iffy recording).
After the video the snippit you heard was Judgment and Punishment, and yes you do want to listen to that! The video is kinda campy, but awesome. The live version in Melbourne is outstanding!
No group is going to have a flawless discography, and I feel it's important to acknowledge that not all songs are hits for us personally. I agree this song isn't one that stands out for me, but the musicianship is no less talented. Impossible to think a group will have all bangers at the same level as each other, and across all people. Part of what makes the amount of music out there so amazing - there's something for everyone. Appreciate the honesty and not blindly saying "hell yeah" to everything without being an ass one way or the other. That's why I like your channel. Would love to see you react to Passionflower by Jon Gomm. This version: th-cam.com/video/nY7GnAq6Znw/w-d-xo.html
agree 100%, glad to hear more people having this perspective. Disliking music has some value as well, every route has something to learn +1 on the recommendation btw
Hey there Bryan - if you want something a little similar to this in terms of a female-fronted metalcore with insane vocals, I can't recommend Spiritbox enough. Several tracks to highlight - Either Belcarra or Holy Roller for incredibly heavy, groovy songs with mostly screaming. Blessed Be or Perennial for a nice mix-up of singing and screaming with fantastic song-structure and finally Rule of Nines or any of the three Mara Effect songs. The lead singer Courtney also does a one-take version of several songs off of her website - you can really see her range. Its ridiculous.
Heavier music with no groove bores me personally. Vlad on the drums & Eugene on the bass here are *such* a tasty rhythm section (I play a bit of bass, & wish I had a tenth of Eugene's chops, playing-wise & compositionally!). I'm with you regarding the somewhat-dry-considering-it's-Jinjer verse, and also that the rest of the piece picks the whole back up overall. Taking into account that English is a 2nd or 3rd language for these guys, their lyrics put many a natively-English-spoken band/artist to shame imho. A quick heads-up before you listen to "Judgement & Punishment" btw: (among others) Tatiana loves reggae & Amy Winehouse! ;)
Hit the nail on the head with Vlad and Eugene. They are the heart of the band and provide a lot of the elements that I enjoy in Jinjer's music. They're such a powerhouse together.
Great video! I would like you to take a look into Black Metal, I think there are a lot of underrated bands that are totally worth to hear your opinion about them. I will suggest the following: 1. Dissection - Nights Blood (pure harmony and unique aura, you'll love the riffs) 2. Mgła - Exercises of Futility V (the best and the most interesting drummer in the subgenre in the last 5 yeas) 3. Watain - The Wild Hunt (so powerful yet so dark and prideful, some Pink Floyd references on a black metal song)
Thanks for reminding me to do this. Jinjer always delivers on their lyrics. There is so much subtle metaphor and double speak in Pisces that I often find it hard to believe they aren't native english speakers.
I'm not much of a Jinjer fan, which was starting to make me wonder if I had some kind of mental defect compared to most metal fans. I did like the groove in the chorus more than some of their other stuff though.
I'm not either TBH they're like a decade to late. There were countless bands that emerged that sounded just like this around 2010/2011. The song has cool sections, but it's not fresh.
Its definitely not for everyone, they arent doing anything 'too flashy' and its not easy music so unless you are a metal fan or a big music nut\musician you might have a hard time enjoying it
@@chincevideos923 - You know, the thing that many people don't understand about Jinjer is that they make music that mean something to themselves first and foremost. If people relate to it, fine, if not, it's not the band's problem. The thing I don't like about modern Metal bands since the 2000's it's the fact that they seem to be making music that don't mean that much to them, it's all to keep the fans "happy".
@@CassetteMelody They formed in 2009. They've been touring and making albums for ten years. That you just recently heard of them doesn't mean they're a new band. They've released four albums and two EPs. So no, they're not too late. As far as doing the same thing, Meshuggah has been doing the same for twenty years. Are they boring? What about Gojira? Nightwish? Megadeth? AC/DC? Guns N Roses? Judas Priest? Ozzy? Slayer? Devin Townsend? Nine Inch Nails? Ministry? Korn? I can name every band that's been around for more than ten years doing the same thing, and I'll bet you won't say they're not fresh.

The next level is Iwrestledabearonce even if the band is older than Jinjer. Their catchiest and easiest song is probably "Boat Paddle". I've found the original video also very funny. I liked when In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity added some clean vocals in their melodic death metal but now it is too common, it's not the same feeling.
@@chincevideos923 I said "next level", not same level. Doesn't matter if they take themselves seriously, their music is serious 99% of the time and more complex than Jinjer. I don't see any problem about bringing some fun in the metal world if the music is worth it, the problem is a lot of people who hated this band only for that.
I think I've seen that name mentioned with Spiritbox in quite a few comments before. If they are similar to either them or Jinjer then I definitely need to check them out.
@@CriticalReactions at one point courtney laplante was their lead vocalist, and i remember you saying you enjoyed her. Might be worth checking out some of their later stuff with her edit: dont really know them enough to have any songs in mind to recommend though
It just ocurred to me that you didn't react to Devin Townsend yet! You don't know what you're missing. He's very versatile, so chosing a song that represents him is hard... i'd say Genesis for the versatility or Deadhead (live at royal albert hall) for his most famous performance
I checked out a live version of Deadhead but it was blocked. Here is a Google Drive link for that reaction. drive.google.com/open?id=1IXXhIxQYvVu3Dr-tzqKu_Wel8YDhnjNi

Also check out T.R.A.M., a supergroup with members from Animals, Mars Volta, and Suicide Silence that does heavy prog jazz. Lastly, check out Tigran Hamasyan!
Been catching up on your video analysis of Jinjer. It's so refreshing to see someone analyzing the the band as musicians instead of reactions. Keep it going and more Jinjer. Also, I love Jinjer but agree the verse is kind of lame.
I'm a Jinjer fan. This is a good rocker to kick off the album. While not the best song on the album it serves its function well as the starter. Judgement and Punishment, and Retrospection are nuch better songs. As a musician I have to say that I hate mirrored video. I know you do it to try and beat copyright algorithms, but it always catches my eye as weird. I am always watching the musicians for their technical prowess.
From what little jinjer ive heard i cant really get into them. Probably requires a deep dive into their discography but i dont really have the urge to do so.
Mrh... I'm not sure who told you that the first song of all the amazing songs on Macro that you should listen to is On The Top, but they steered you pretty wrong. You in particular, I think, would very much enjoy the last track, lainnereP, a very cool experimental song that plays with the idea of reversing and exploring a different side of the Micro song Perennial. The most unique song more in their usual style is Judgement (& Punishment), and also has arguably the best video, or at the very least, the weirdest. XD Noah is the heaviest song on the album, and also a very good video. This video really didn't do it for me, and the song is just okay.
Jinjer is kind of at that nightwish spot for me. I don't have anything bad to say about them, but I just don't see them head and shoulders over so many other bands to acquire so much more attention from the reaction community 🙎 With that off my chest, this is one of my favorites of theirs 😂 only for the chorus really It kind of angers me these tesseract clones are getting more praise. I SAID IT FIGHT ME
This song is so much better live in Kiev 2019. The dancer should have been left out in the video. Try the live version. Also not a bad song just listening in the car. But not fond of the video.
Boring and interesting are unhelpful terms. They suggest you are looking to stack as many notes as possible on top of one another. That's just noise. On the other hand, if you mean to say it sounds too much like other music you don't like, then you should say that. Boring doesn't say anything. They're not metalcore anymore. They lost their second guitarist. They are djent-fusion now. That first part you describe as boring smacks of Meshuggah, as all djent bands are apt to sound. The softer part you like is the fusion of jazz and metal into that djent. Hence, djent-fusion.
I agree. It feels a bit all over the place, most transitions on it don't make a lot of sense to me, they just come out of nowhere, which is not a usual thing for them.
That song at the end you want to check out(Judgement & Punishment) is kind of a spin of their metal style mixed with a reggae vibe, its super cool im sure you would enjoy it.
Dip A Sail is a totally underrated Jinjer song that I absolutely love.

I don't see any problem about bringing some fun in the metal world if the music is worth it, the problem is a lot of people who hated this band only for that.
@@meshuggagah4118 your not wrong. my point is they are not the "next step" up from jinjer. sure they're more complex but the music is so different
I think I've seen that name mentioned with Spiritbox in quite a few comments before. If they are similar to either them or Jinjer then I definitely need to check them out.
@@CriticalReactions at one point courtney laplante was their lead vocalist, and i remember you saying you enjoyed her. Might be worth checking out some of their later stuff with her
edit: dont really know them enough to have any songs in mind to recommend though
If you want some stuff that you're not used to hear, check out Heilung-Krigsgaldr. I need to be live version.
Trust me, you won't regret it
It just ocurred to me that you didn't react to Devin Townsend yet! You don't know what you're missing.
He's very versatile, so chosing a song that represents him is hard... i'd say Genesis for the versatility or Deadhead (live at royal albert hall) for his most famous performance
He did something with Devin Townsend because i remember liking a comment about checking out Straping Young Lad.
@@xhectichectorx I searched his channel for "devin townsend" and it returned nothing
I checked out a live version of Deadhead but it was blocked. Here is a Google Drive link for that reaction. drive.google.com/open?id=1IXXhIxQYvVu3Dr-tzqKu_Wel8YDhnjNi
@@CriticalReactions Thanks!
I saw this Jinjer double header on another channel.
You should react to it in this format. I had never seen the lyrical video in 2 years of watching Jinjer.
First play Jinjer "Captain Clock" lyrics video (amazing)
th-cam.com/video/FoYzwuCnUbo/w-d-xo.html
then, play the live version of Captain Clock immediately after as part of the one reaction:
th-cam.com/video/ArXkEjGvoLc/w-d-xo.html
Also retrospection
Have you listened to Spiritbox's Holy Roller yet?
Nope. It's on my list though. I have so many recently released tracks that I want to do, just not enough time to do them all. 😩
@@CriticalReactions haha do take your time. That song is such a banger and it became so popular in a day. Check it out when you have the time :>
Check out I Speak Astronomy and Who's Gonna be the One by them
Why no more love for Animals as Leaders, man? I think they could quickly become one of your favorite bands if you experience the range of sounds.
You should do some more Gojira
Please react to Vintersea - "Illuminated"
Please revisit Rivers of nihil if possible
We're returning to them this week!
👍
Live' in Kiev' is better... Good reaction!
Jinjer is kind of at that nightwish spot for me. I don't have anything bad to say about them, but I just don't see them head and shoulders over so many other bands to acquire so much more attention from the reaction community 🙎
With that off my chest, this is one of my favorites of theirs 😂 only for the chorus really
It kind of angers me these tesseract clones are getting more praise. I SAID IT FIGHT ME
i see what you mean, but tesseract is so far above the 'clones' i dont see a threat
It's one of their weakest songs IMO. Still good though.
I agree. It feels a bit all over the place, most transitions on it don't make a lot of sense to me, they just come out of nowhere, which is not a usual thing for them.
Not my fav song as a jinjer fan. Still ok i guess.
I'm with you on the verse being weak. It did nothing for me.
