The fantastic thing is I just went to Lowe’s and spent $70+ on black iron pipes for my build. It’s probably close to 10 pounds for the hilt itself but I got wooden dowels for either side and now I’m going to find glow in the dark red paint and make it into a hanging prop
If you draw a coloured ring around the circumference of the top and bottom of the pvc, separate the colour from the pvc with two more coloured rings above and below the original rings and with a bit of really simple blender magic, you've got a realistic motion tracked light saber that looks just like the films :)
Hey there, If you are still making props (only discovered you today) there is a handy tip for making worn metal with spray paint which is the plastic bag technique there you put on a coat of metallic spray and then when you spray some black on, you then dab in with a plastic bag and it creates a worn metal look, If you watch Cine-fix Homemade tutorials (preferably the Armored Batman and Kylo Ren one) they show this technique being used
Is it not awkward, being a smaller diameter for the center section? Would think that the grip area would be right where the diameter steps down for the center, making it a little awkward.
i like this video very much and thank you for it but if i were not to use the rubber bands or the things on the couplings would it be okay and can i also just use one pvc pipe to be in ? but thank you
+Ian Bernal You don't need the rubber rings, those were just for decoration. You only need 1 long piece of 3/4" PVC for the "blade". It will go through both ends of the hilt.
+nickd1961 Great tip, thank you! I will try that next time. I hear that GooGone isn't the safest thing to have on your skin. I'm working on some plastic stuff now that has some residue, I will try your suggestion! :-)
Hey great build.. mine came out great! Do u think its possible to make a smaller version with smaller couplings and adaptors..my 4 year old is asking for Darth Mauls lightsaber? This one's too big for him...thanks
+Scott S Hello, thank you for watching. I was at Home Depot today and stopped by the PVC section. The best thing I could come up with on the fly is: 2 x 3/4" compression couplings, 2 x 1 & 1/4" PVC couplings, and about 6-8 inches of 1 & 1/4 PVC pipe for the grip. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a clean fit. If you have a rotary tool or some other sanding device, you'll need to remove the grooves on the inside part of the 3/4" compression coupling, then it will slide in to the 1 & 1/4" PVC coupling. Epoxy all the connections and you should be good to go. Here is a photo for reference: goo.gl/TgnDUl
I just completed a standard Sabre not dual already just for display I think this is going to be my next project that I might Shake It Up and add a few different parts
+randomguy4283 They are VERY durable and can take a beating. I have 2 kids and a bunch of these PVC sabers, we haven't broken one yet...and we've really taken some hard swings. They are very sturdy.
what kind of paint would be good for the blades? I just introduced my little sister to start wars and we will definitely be building some of your saber designs!
+Tyler Brookshire Hello, thank you for watching! :-) My 2 daughters have a few of these sabers, and they've been using colored duct tape on the blades. It will stand up better than paint, and it is easily replaceable. Good luck!
hey I have been looking for something like this for a while now, great job on the vid, inexpensive and durable. I was planning on trying to find a way to fasten your one handers to each other. got any ideas? it will still need to be durable I was thinking a coupler of some sort. thanks for the vids.
+OmegaWolf113 look for 5/8" wall thickness pipe insulation, most stores will only have the 3/8" thick stuff. had to order mine from Amazon. wrap it with colorful duct tape. also can use pool noodles but will much thicker.
Hello, thank you for watching, I list the approximate prices of the materials in the descriptions of all of my builds. The raw materials, not including tools and paint, are about $20 US. Good luck on the project :)
HappyTrooper Thank you very much! I'm using this build as a prop for a Star Wars short film I'm making. I'll be sure to credit you in the description! 😁😔
Question…if I downsize everything by 1/4”, will this design process still work? I feel the current hilt after it was completed was a little too big for my hands, and it’s pretty heavy for a prop IMO. Downsizing should cut the weight slightly.
Happytrooperdotcom > would it help the blade if you was to put something inside the blade. Like that expandable Foam insulation or something like that. or maybe a dowel rod ?
+Jordan Clark Yes, I'm working on another saber...the next hilt will be made out of metal. I hope to have the video out in 2 weeks or so. Thank you for watching! I also have a few more blaster props on the work bench (Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Princess Leia).
+marco9711 Not a problem, happy to help :-) Thank you for watching and good luck with the build! Are you going to change the paint scheme? If I do it again, I probably won't used those nickel colored rings...I'll just go with all black or maybe silver with some black weathering. Post some pics up here if you can!
It's about 2 times more expensive on average. Dependent on where you live (state and country) and of course the amount of other hard ware stores nearby (competition lower prices *Usually*).
+Ethan Kim Definitely, this saber can take a beating, it is very sturdy. The PVC should hold up, if you need something stronger, you can use copper pipe :-)
+Reece Vince no, it is not cut in half, it is one long piece. The 2 compression couplings at each end of the hilt will secure the PVC "blade". Thank you for watching :-)
+Reece Vince I would recommend having 2 different types of blades. One long blade to simulate the double blade saber, and the second blade can be a little shorter...only coming out of one side of the hilt. If you only compress one side of the PVC blade, it will be wobbly inside the hilt. If you extend the blade all the way down to the end of the hilt, it will be secure at both sides. When going for the single blade look, use the shorter PVC blade, and don't let the blade extend out of one end. PVC pipe is relatively inexpensive. I think 3/4" is only about 3-4$ for 10 feet. If you buy 2, you are still under 10 bucks :-)
Thanks this will be very helpful I just hope the parts have the same name here in the uk also it would be amazing to see a curved light sabre because I have not seen it been done before and you seem like the type of guy that likes a Challenge
+TheLocutus70 The blade is one long piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe. It secures by tightening the 2 endcaps on the hilt...so the single blade won't move. When you tighten the endcaps, it compresses the 2 rubber compression pieces, securing the blade.
+HappyTrooperDotCom for me, I did both your lightsaber builds, and the total cost of everything was about $85. Keep in mind I already had all the tools I needed
I completed a version of this build years ago. If I remember correctly, it was about $70 for all materials. The paint was the most expensive thing to buy, but IIRC the compression couplings and trap adapters were the next most expensive things. I could be wrong though.
+PROZIQ SEVEN No, this is a prop. At the 29 second mark, I mention that this is a prop only and does not light up or make sounds. This is a prop similar to what is used in the Star Wars films. Actors use a prop like this and the effects team ads the blade in post-production. This prop is useful if you are shooting your own Star Wars photos/videos and using Photoshop (for photos) or After Effects (for videos). Check out this photo from Episode 1 1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ck9Gbbyh88/UWhrm1UM9gI/AAAAAAAAL7Q/HPhdN3zFOY4/s640/351da1a9d41bc4cca1162d8f7386dfa9.jpg
+PROZIQ SEVEN Funny you should ask...I am working on it right now. I hope to have the video up in about 2 weeks. The first order blaster is pretty awesome :-)
He good at math awesome but I need a lightsaber that makes sound or my girlfriend is going to make fun of me so could you start make electronic ones thanks
@@HappyTrooperDotCom yeh she's only 5. I couldn't find anything to end the sides of the Saber klike the pieces you glues together on each end) but still looks good. Thanks for the video. I'll put a pic up, maybe the one with the rey staff I cobbled together in 1 minute for star wars day hahaha
Its hard to classify as a gloss or a flat. It is a metallic. Definitely not glossy, and not flat either. If had to pick a finish, it would be a metallic satin.
what part would i need if i wanted the saber to come apart as if battle damaged or just being able to switch from double bladed to two separate sabers?
HappyTrooper Appreciate that. You videos are the best for simplicity yet conciseness. I'm working on my next one (first being the prototype) using black piping - save a paint job. Will track the progress on my IG
HappyTrooper nice build man! My friend is working on a lightsaber build for me, and it might go through a few iterations before the final build gets done. From your experience, what size should my staff be in inches? I'm 5'11", and I'd like to have a staff catered to my size. Thanks for showing how this is done, and may the force be with you! 😊👍
The fantastic thing is I just went to Lowe’s and spent $70+ on black iron pipes for my build. It’s probably close to 10 pounds for the hilt itself but I got wooden dowels for either side and now I’m going to find glow in the dark red paint and make it into a hanging prop
All I got to say is once I show my sons and nephews where I learned to build their sabers, they're going to love you forever.
Can you attach two single bladed lightsabers somehow to make a more unique saber staff?
If you draw a coloured ring around the circumference of the top and bottom of the pvc, separate the colour from the pvc with two more coloured rings above and below the original rings and with a bit of really simple blender magic, you've got a realistic motion tracked light saber that looks just like the films :)
For a grip nothing beats tennis racket overlay cheap and easy and you won't get excess residue on your hands as the glue ages in the tape
2:17 - 2:44 love the lego stormtroopers in the corner 👌
Hit Lowes Eisley today to buy parts for my Saberstaff. Still need a couple of things before I can start my build though.
The Force is strong with HappyTrooperDotCom.
My friends are going to love this!
Instead of epoxy, would I be able to use thick wads of friction or electrical tape?
VeryFeralChild late reply but yes that would work
Your Builds are awesome.
This is very interesting. Could you suggest a modification or fitting to include to make the two ends separable?
You could cut the pvc into halves and get duplicates of the rubber things.
Hey there, If you are still making props (only discovered you today) there is a handy tip for making worn metal with spray paint which is the plastic bag technique there you put on a coat of metallic spray and then when you spray some black on, you then dab in with a plastic bag and it creates a worn metal look, If you watch Cine-fix Homemade tutorials (preferably the Armored Batman and Kylo Ren one) they show this technique being used
+Anthony Gibson Awesome, thanks for sharing! I will check it out.
Awesome, I just made your one blade saber today! I'll be making this one soon!
+MatrixDragon Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Hope you had fun during the build! Good luck on the saber staff!
+MatrixDragon So did I. Haha.
Man this kid be talking science 😎
at least this lightsaber doesn't need a dremel
Is it not awkward, being a smaller diameter for the center section? Would think that the grip area would be right where the diameter steps down for the center, making it a little awkward.
These are awesome, can you make the large Clone trooper rifle- the DC-17A?
Hi, I can’t seem to find a trap adapter with double slip like you have. Help?
Gratz on 3000 subs! you more than deserve it!
+Mathsnerds MC Thank you! :-) & thank you for watching!
Let me know when you make a video about the Excalisaber. (Which is what I call Kylo Ren's Lightsaber).
OKAY BOI THIS EARNED YOU A SUB AND A LIKE! I WANTED TO MAKE A DOUBLE BLADED SABER FOR A WHILE AND YOU HELP A TON THANKS DUDE! *virtual high five*

Just a tip. A heat gun or hair dryer can get those stickers off and denatured alcohol gets off any remaining glue.
+nickd1961 Great tip, thank you! I will try that next time. I hear that GooGone isn't the safest thing to have on your skin. I'm working on some plastic stuff now that has some residue, I will try your suggestion! :-)

Really cool
for the blade itself do you recommend any type of spray paint to make it shine or would gloss work
You should make a double handed lightsaber
Your designs look awesome. But I was wondering how durable they are? I was thinking about making this model and a couple of the single bladed ones.
+randomguy4283 They are VERY durable and can take a beating. I have 2 kids and a bunch of these PVC sabers, we haven't broken one yet...and we've really taken some hard swings. They are very sturdy.
god, those noises are high pitched
what kimd of light saber hilts are u gonna build any chance on a cross gard

Do you believe that with some further designing I could make this staff split into two?
Also, is there some way I could put foam around the pvc?
+OmegaWolf113 look for 5/8" wall thickness pipe insulation, most stores will only have the 3/8" thick stuff. had to order mine from Amazon. wrap it with colorful duct tape. also can use pool noodles but will much thicker.

Would there be any way to cut the saber in half and put a coupler in between to make it detachable?
How much would this cost to make overall? Thx!

HappyTrooper Thank you very much! I'm using this build as a prop for a Star Wars short film I'm making. I'll be sure to credit you in the description! 😁😔
Did you use thick walled or thin walled pvc pipe in this build?
Question…if I downsize everything by 1/4”, will this design process still work? I feel the current hilt after it was completed was a little too big for my hands, and it’s pretty heavy for a prop IMO. Downsizing should cut the weight slightly.
i was looking to do that but i’m not sure if you will find the proper trap adapters
I think I would like this if it was a bit skinnier, but I could probably just substitute some prices with smaller measurements.
could this be done with flashlight body or bodies?
You think you could try making the Kylo Ren Lightsaber with stuff you can get at Home Depot?
Yes! :-) I am working on a Kylo Ren hilt with HD parts now. Will have a video out in a few weeks. Thank you for watching!
Happytrooperdotcom > would it help the blade if you was to put something inside the blade. Like that expandable Foam insulation or something like that. or maybe a dowel rod ?
+TheLocutus70 If you really want a stiff pipe as the blade, you can use a copper pipe :-) Good luck finding somebody that will duel with you!
Already have the first built. Working on the Saberstaff now.
Could u put electronics inside this
Could you make more tutorials like this?
+Jordan Clark Yes, I'm working on another saber...the next hilt will be made out of metal. I hope to have the video out in 2 weeks or so. Thank you for watching! I also have a few more blaster props on the work bench (Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Princess Leia).
Me and my dad went to lowes and got the things we needed but the trap adapters won't fit the coupling do we need to sand it to fit
i saw your other video of the single bladed one and i made 3 and i made 3 of these to
+Andrew Ziegler That is awesome! :-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate it!
thanks it was fun and cool
+HappyTrooperDotCom the pics are on face book
Does anyone know where to get the trap adapters. My local Home Depot doesn't have them and I cannot find them on Amazon.
+marco9711 Here is the Home Depot listing for the part: thd.co/1Q72hGu Perhaps you can order it or find it at another local Home Depot?
+HappyTrooperDotCom thanks so much. Apparently they were out of stock when I went to buy the materials so I can hopefully continue the build :)

If I do it again, I probably won't used those nickel colored rings...I'll just go with all black or maybe silver with some black weathering. Post some pics up here if you can!
Does ABS cost more than PVC? Because I only used like half of these materials in ABS bc my Home Depot doesn't sell PVC, and the total was 33 dollars
It's about 2 times more expensive on average. Dependent on where you live (state and country) and of course the amount of other hard ware stores nearby (competition lower prices *Usually*).
Cool
If you even do if like to see if you paint the blade and how you do it
+Saber Surgeon I didn't pain the blade, just used some colored duct tape. It takes more abuse than paint, and it is easy to change colors :-)
is there a possible alternative for the Solvent Weld Adapter
Puddle flange adaptor
Ok thanks bud
can you duel with these too?
+Ethan Kim Definitely, this saber can take a beating, it is very sturdy. The PVC should hold up, if you need something stronger, you can use copper pipe :-)
for the blade do we cut the pvc in half or not
+Reece Vince no, it is not cut in half, it is one long piece. The 2 compression couplings at each end of the hilt will secure the PVC "blade". Thank you for watching :-)

Alright, thanks. I thought so but I wasn't sure.
what should i use to give the end a round edge?
You might be able to find a PVC Cap for the ends: www.pvcfittingsonline.com/447-007-3-4-schedule-40-pvc-cap.html?gclid=CMv_tY7T380CFVhZhgodlBAAMg

whats the cost to make the whole thing
+Jakeddog 5252 I put approximate costs in the description. All parts (does not include paint/epoxy) come out to be just under $20.
+HappyTrooperDotCom for me, I did both your lightsaber builds, and the total cost of everything was about $85. Keep in mind I already had all the tools

how many mm is 1 1/4 inch? i cnat find anything the right side here but feel im converting wrong.
it is 31.75 mm

Is it a option to use the couplings or do you haft to
