+HappyTrooperDotCom I certainly will, I've breaking lightsabers with my brother trying to choreograph a good fight and I think you saved me a lot of money here
+THEIRONWALRUS If you guys record it, please post a link to your video in this section, or tag me on it when you are done. I'd love to see it! This saber can take a beating. The Star Wars actors used a prop similar to this, may not have been a sink drain and PVC, but it was similar: goo.gl/OPKZ5J
Just completed mine, it turned out great. I made a hilt-only Lightsaber were I can’t attach a blade. Here’s how to make it slightly better and cheaper if you don’t want a blade. Keep the “junk parts”. Use the chrome circle at the end of one of the junk rods as an activator button instead of a screw. Use epoxy to keep it in place. Wrap electrical tape around the hole at the end of the assembly. Put the plastic end piece on first, then the metal end piece, it will give more of an Obi-Wan feel. Also if you want a blade plug so kids won’t see inside the saber, use the blue chrome sink plug and slide it gently into the end, the o-ring will keep it in place. I epoxied some large hex nuts inside the actual saber so that when a let little kids hold it, i would fell like a real saber would. Overall, I loved you tutorial and it made a beautiful saber. Thank You.
Also, to make the hilt-only saber heavier, I put 2 C batteries into it from the top, then put some paper towel in the saber and put the saber plug in which will hold the batteries in place
I, too, have no idea how I ended up here...I was researching how to diagnose faulty ignition coils on small engines! At any rate, this is the easiest and best looking DIY lightsaber I think I've ever seen. Thanks!
Will be building then for me, my oldest son, and three of my nephews. Just one problem, I was bamboozled into being the only Sith in the family. Me against 4 little Jedis, I'd better train now if I expect the Sith to survive.
Honestly, who the hell is disliking this video? Anyway, this is one of the coolest things I've seen on youtube, and I'm pretty pumped to get started in building one. Thanks a lot for this video. I thought the graphics you added in the video were pretty funny, and the little girl was adorable.
maybe his simple idea with easy steps and a great product was just that much better than 308 people's crappy saber that cost alot and took to much time to make
Me and my 4 year old brother made a pair of these, they were really fun to build and to play with after, they also didn’t cost to much to make, thanks so much for your videos
Cheers man! The wife and I have been wanting to build practice sabers for learning swordplay and this it the best I've seen yet as far as a cheap DIY saber. Keep up the good work!
Quick tip on the 1/4" washers - I found that a 3/8" black nylon washer works really well instead of the 1/4" metal washer. The 1/4" metal washer can be hit-or-miss on fitting in the hole. The 1/4" nylon washer is too small but the 3/8" works nicely. The 3/8" nylon washer has an outside diameter of 5/8" and inside diameter of 0.380. I also used a 1/4" carriage bolt (with 1/4" cap nut), instead of the #10-24 x 2" machine screw. The benefit of the carriage bolt is that the head is smooth - no drive slot in the head (where you put your screwdriver to turn). Worked out great. Thanks again for this great how-to video. We built 2 of them, one with yellow and the other with blue electrical tape grips (kid's choices). Looks great! Happy to post pictures in the appropriate place HappyTrooper.
These are great ideas, thanks for sharing! I'm glad that you were able to engineer a better design! I have put your suggestions in the description section. Thanks for watching and for the suggestions!
Using a fine grade sandpaper will remove the printed markings on the PVC without marring it. Then I used a fluorescent spray paint suitable for plastics. Fired up my 192 LED black light. Looked awesome!
Just finished the build with my son...thanks for the video. The only issue we had was the 3/4 coupler was too large to fit into the drain pipe...we went the friction tape route and it worked perfectly. Also...need a slighted larger bit then 1/8 to accommodate the 10-24 screw. Thanks again!
WOW!! Totally awesome! Thanks for posting this! I have car underlights in my garage that I always wanted to use to build a lightsaber light for my wall and now I know how I'm going to do it! THanks so much!
This is a pretty cool build. I added on some accessories to make it look cooler. Thanks for the idea its cool how its possible to make a lightsaber out of a sink drain
Thank you so much for the tut! I just finished constructed this saber it was very easy and cheap! I noticed that the PVC is quite heavy so i recommend finding a lightweight PVC and other than that this thing is awesome! Great for a movie prop!
absolutely love this tutorial! was super easy getting the parts and fitting everything together! was even able to fit a flashlight in the hilt for my polycarbonate blade! thanks alot!
Awesome build! Going to make it very soon! I will probably pass on the blade part and just make the body of the lightsaber. Going to take it when I go see the force awakens!
It looks unreal dude! I don't think I'll be able to build one anytime soon but it's a really neat idea! I was thinking about buying an actual model light saber, but maybe now I might just make one!
Thank you for the post, my son and I had a great resurrection Sunday father and son time creating ours with a few small additions with the remaining parts I'd like to post and send to you to share.
Mine is constructed and has filled a gap in my life that I didn't know existed. I would recommend wrapping a thick layer of tape instead of the coupler, but that's my preference. Also I bought two drain assemblies and made two, but this thing is so awesome i might have to make more. Get to Hoth Depot now!
+rockhardmike Thanks for watching and glad you finished the build! There is no right/wrong way to make this, if you can do it without the coupling, that is awesome. Great job and thanks for sharing! :-)
Thank you for making this video! I can't wait to do this with my teenage son for a cool mother/son activity so we can have a lightsaber to go with the costumes I'm making..he is going as a Sith and I'm going as a Grey Jedi
+HappyTrooperDotCom I created a public shopping list for people to see from Hoth Depot's website. Go to their site> hover your cursor over 'Your Account' (upper RH corner)> click on 'Find a List'> type in the search field 'Kristen Roessler'> Click 'Search Lists'> click on 'DIY Lightsaber - Non-Electric'...from there people can add select items to their cart or add the entire list to their cart> from the cart they can ship it or pick it up in-store.
+Handmade Props Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment...very much appreciated! :-) Just finished another prop video today, kindly take a look if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/P6kg_dM6KsY/w-d-xo.html
I am also going to make my own version of this. Hopefully it will work out. Mine will be able to light up, change the color and the brightness of the color, and I'd like to either model it after Palpatine's own lightsaber or go with my own idea. That's the plan anyway xD
We made ares a bit different and used red pvc and a flashlight to make ares light up but we used the same hilt thank you that was probably the best light saber I have
Kyle Woolman Yeah, if the parts aren't available, imagination will get it done :-) Let me know what you ended up doing to make it work. If you couldn't find the drain assembly at your local store, maybe an online vendor (Amazon?) would carry it. Either way, let us know what you did to get it to work! Good luck!
+HappyTrooperDotCom Thanks. Almost done now. I don't have a drill so I'll have to borrow one. Also I was wondering if you was going to try to build a Kylo Ren Saber.
+TheLocutus70 Hello, I will put the Kyly Ren saber on the to-do list :) It may just be the hilt...I'll see what I can come up with. Good luck on the build! On the pop-up sink drain saber, I hope you were able to see the messages about the 1/2" coupling. I made a mistake and showed the 3/4" coupling...it should be 1/2" coupling. Or...you can just skip the coupling and use friction tape to fill in that gap.
+TheLocutus70 Are you talking about the place where the coupling goes? You can probably skip the coupling, just place the PVC "blade" inside the hilt, mark the "blade" where the gap is. Pull the "blade" back out, and wrap some friction tape around that spot until it fits snug in the hilt...no coupling needed :-) AND the blade is secure.
Great video, thank you. Just wanted to let you know that when we tried this the 3/4" coupler was too large. We could even see the difference in our part and yours. What we needed was a 1/2" coupler, which looks just like the one you are using in the video. Again, thank you for this great instruction!
+Mark Figart Hello Mark, I apologize for the mistake. I have added TH-cam display cards and pop-ups on the video, trying to explain the correction. They definitely appear if watching on a PC/Mac, but if you are watching on a mobile device with a later version of the TH-cam app, they do not appear. Again, I apologize for the mistake.
This is great, something I'm looking forward to do with my kids in the future. I do own some expensive custom sabers but I also love diy builds that bring out the kid in me. Your tutorial reminds me of what my friends and I did as kids, which is why I believe my kids will like it too. Keep up the good work.
One problem i had was the hole for the machine screw the 1/8" bit was too small... i used a 3/16" and it fit much better... Thanks for this awesome design.
Extra Tip Regarding Coloured Duct Tape: If your going to be using the lightsaber for filming, brightly coloured duct tape is going to help you immensely. It'll make it easier to see the blade while swinging it around when you are adding in the special effects.
+Cryatora Prime Yes, it can. I would imagine 2 people swinging as hard as they could at each other repeatedly would probably break it...but I have to admit, this saber is pretty sturdy. It can take a beating and is a great prop of you are filming lightsaber duels or just for rough-housing outside. I think adding the duct tape to the blade helps with preventing shattering too.
This is a great way to build a cheap durable Lightsaber! Props to you sir! Does anyone have any ideas as to personalizing this lightsaber a bit more? Ya know, adding some details to the handle? I'm making one for a friends birthday and I'd like to make it feel extra personal.
+POP KULTURE (POPKULTURE) I have seen some people use some kind of hose for the grip, that looked pretty cool. My brother purchased a bronze colored sink drain and wrapped it with worn cloth. It had a nice distressed feel, and almost a steampunk look to it. In addition, even though the lightsaber does not light up, he made a pretty cool clicky button to simulate power. You may also be able to slip some black O rings on the handle. You should be able to find the O Rings in the same department as the sink drain (plumbing). I'm not the first person to suggest a sink drain hilt. I bet if you google it, you'll find some other creative hilts. Good luck and thanks for watching!
+chuckles0026 Minecraft,Forza and More I don't think so. It's just made with clear material but it's just as durable as normal PVC...at least if I remember correctly.
Now I know what we will be doing on slow freight nights, overnight at Home Depot. Thanks. Just need a seriously bright LED or something to make that bad boy glow.
I just bought all the components for about $22 at Home Depot. Great Idea: Add a foam noodle over the top (make sure you test the fit first. For 45 in swords no adhesive is necessary. For 36 in swords you might want to wrap some extra tape around the PVC pipe to secure it more. You could glue it, but don't b/c then you can switch colors. I made a red one and another that switches from green to blue depending on my son's mood. This is wise anyway since the foam will eventually need to be replaced. We just fought for 2-3 hours straight with about 4 kids and the sword foam only received minor damage.
Just finished with my first try. It is better than I thought it would be. You need a 1/2 inch coupling, not 3/4. Also might want to try a 2-1/4" bolt instead of a 2". Might depend on the brand of plumbing part. The build is really strong. My 6 and 11 year olds were amazed by the look and feel. They stared at it like it was real. Cost about $12.
+David Stewart Thank you so much for catching that! I have put a note in the video that it should be 1/2" coupling...not 3/4". Again, thank you for pointing that out. Hope it didn't delay your build. Glad your kids like them! I have a 7 and 11 year old that have duels with the sabers. Take care!
i was making them this was as well. its awesome with enough work, they will look awesome. for my button i used a spring, with a button out of a busted toy, and another nut for that part, so it made a real button. later on i made it into a functioning button, and turned the insides into a LED flashlight..
The coolest part about building this is going into Home Depot and getting hit with that Home Depot smell
Nothing like that good old Home Depot smell.
You sparked a sense in my mind I didn’t know was there
You couldn’t be more right
Dude, it smells like my childhood. My dad did a lot of work on our house when I was a kid and I always got dragged to the home depot with him
They should make it a cologne
In one 9 minute video you single handedly made a ton of star wars fans happy, and boost the demand and revenue for chrome pop-up sinks.
Hahaha, thanks for the nice comment Carlos! I only hope there are enough pop-up drains for people that actually need them for sink repairs :-)

Oh well here comes Darth Depot again. With them nifty sabers.
This video takes me back, built one with my Step dad about four years ago and I still have and cherish it
I also built a yellow saber staff last week
this is the most simplistic, and cheapest light saber build I've seen!!! Way to go!

I like how this is actually similar to how they made the original lightsabers props! It looks great, I think I'm gonna try this for myself! :D

Fantastic idea. My boys can't wait for us to start on this project together.
Using a fine grade sandpaper will remove the printed markings on the PVC without marring it. Then I used a fluorescent spray paint suitable for plastics. Fired up my 192 LED black light. Looked awesome!

Glad you like them!
For those who made this, what did you use to color your blade if you did?
I suggest using spray paint! Then use a shiny clear coat so the paint won’t wear of if you use it for combat.
The sabishii otaku agreed
Xenoino spray paint

Extra Tip Regarding Coloured Duct Tape: If your going to be using the lightsaber for filming, brightly coloured duct tape is going to help you immensely. It'll make it easier to see the blade while swinging it around when you are adding in the special effects.
If you use 1 inch couplers for the body, a 3/4 in pvc pipe will snuggly slide in. Then you just need a set screw to hold the blade.
thank you we were able to finished it my son loves it thanks for doing this tutorial
+Mark Figart Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave the comment! Happy to hear that your son likes his new saber! :-)
Can these be used for combat?
This IS SO Cool i have to convince my dad to build this stuff
Just a word of advice..... Construct it together.
Thanks so much man may the force be with you
this was way better then i thought it would be, I'll have ti try my hand at it
if you replace the white with clear PVC and install a small light in the hilt, you can have a light up blade that doesn't look half bad
+Andrew “Drew” Marinelli but wont that make the clear pvc pipe more brittle than the white pvc pipe
I thought much the same thing and am actually going to get the clear blade and light today lol
+chuckles0026 Minecraft,Forza and More I don't think so. It's just made with clear material but it's just as durable as normal PVC...at least if I remember correctly.
+diamondtron01 ok so thats what im gonna do! thanks for the info
Glad to help & may the Force be with you.
Now I know what we will be doing on slow freight nights, overnight at Home Depot. Thanks. Just need a seriously bright LED or something to make that bad boy glow.
I love this. This is an amazing idea my friend!
+Jet Freeland Thank you for watching, and taking the time to leave a comment! Good luck on the build!
+Brian Gibbens Great idea, thanks for sharing with us! Those little padawans are less likely to lose teeth with a pool noodle on top of the PVC :-)
Take care!
well that's interesting. I work at Lowes and never figured that basica stuff like plumbing and hardware would make a lightsaber. badass!
+Jericho Zacrias You have an entire arsenal at your fingertips! :-) Thank you for watching!
Really good tutorial and cool idea!!!
The handle is perfect and if you paint the laser red or blue it will be awesome.
i was making them this was as well. its awesome with enough work, they will look awesome. for my button i used a spring, with a button out of a busted toy, and another nut for that part, so it made a real button. later on i made it into a functioning button, and turned the insides into a LED flashlight..
