I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching for the past 7 hours. I love your honesty and openness about your successes and struggles with the bees. I’m going into my third year and, of course, still learning. You’re a great teacher. Thank you.
Oh wow! That is so nice to know. There are so many ways to do things and I am still learning and trying new things. Another guy that is very similar to me I think is Mike Barry. Has a different style but similar attitude. Just a guy who loves bees and shares what he is doing. I got my first two hives (nucs) almost exactly 7 years ago and have been absolutely obsessed ever since. Beekeeping truly is my passion. If I could figure out a way to make enough money at it I would love to do it full time. Thanks again and be safe during this crazy time🐝🙂
357lockdown crazy thing is this isn’t even my honey! These are hives I manage for someone else. My hives aren’t quite as full of honey as these. Going to probably harvest them next weekend.
Bee escapes are great. A couple of cool nights and everyone will have moved down. I am jealous of all the honey. We are lust getting started in southeast Washington. I could not live in the south because of the humidity but i sure envy the productivity of your environment! Mr Ed makes tools like that wedge you have out of wood. I have made a couple for myself. They are very handy.
My dad was raised in Washington and I have relatives all over that state. I love it out there. I have a fair number of relatives in the Tri Cities area
I've heard of a technique that some beeks use during honey flows. A couple of hours prior to sundown they remove supers and place beside entrance and the bees will abandon supers for the main hive and you can collect after dark. Haven't tried because I never have had as much honey as you have there.
I have great luck with them, mine are a different design though. If you leave them too long, usually over 48 hours, they tend to figure them out. On cooler nights, supers will be nearly “beeless”.
And I hope I can get then to work in June as well. Fume boards are fine but take forever. I would have to buy a bunch to be efficient at all using fine boards. Especially if taking 2 or 4 boxes of honey from each hive. Thanks for checking in.
I agree, not a fan of the brushing and pulling each frame. I will be interested to see how you like them. I don't even have supers on yet (Central Indiana).
JBEE'S Honey Joel Brutcher yes we have been fortunate this year. The weather has really been ideal. The only issue is that everything is a little early. So I hope we don’t run into a serious dearth in a couple months. I manage these bees for the folks at Honey Hill Farm. They aren’t even my bees lol. It is a great spot for bees and they are typically quite productive here. I think there is quite a bit of clover that blooms early which could explain why they have so much honey already. Thanks for checking in!
I’m wanting to begin beekeeping next spring, I’m planting some borage this week to get it going. The boxes I have have yellow foundation, what do you not like about them and what foundation do you recommend? Great videos btw!
I think the yellow foundation I have just does not have enough wax on it and the bees tend not to fill it out as quickly. It is also difficult to see new eggs in it. I like to use triple waxed foundation from Pierco. The bees draw it out well with wax and it is very easy to spot eggs in it. Great question!
I've never used escapes. Curious what the results will be. I'm making a trip to Blue Sky Bee Supply tomorrow or Saturday, should get 1 or 2 to try out.
I can see how the bee escape will work well if you have full capped cells in a box. Any nectar not capped will stay that way. I do not have hive beetles just everything else. Wax moths, varoa mites, now asian giant hornets, American foul brood, European foulbrood, nosema. I feel you are using the tool holder open plastic thingy wrong, or not design spec. If I had one, I would pop the boxes apart, use the tool to hold it ajar, use smoke in the crack, then just let it fall lifting the box off. Setting up a bee escape it wouldn't be the application for its use.
Yes you are correct. I only put the honey ready to harvest above the bees escape. As far as the tool goes I used it for h the exact purpose you describe. To crack the hive open and hold ajar while I smoke them or prepare the. Box for removal. Then, as you say, it drops down when the box is removed. To apply the bee escapes I just set them on the box below and then stack the honey boxes above them.
Tell me your experiences and tips using bee escapes for honey harvest. I sure hope they work!

Thanks for the shout out, Bruce. Much appreciated! That’s quite the honey haul you got there.
You’re welcome and I wish you the best. Looks like you have been busy up there as well.
brucesbees Yeah, still trucking along. A few of the hives and given me some trouble this year but they seem to be pulling through.
It is always a challenge. Mine have been doing really well this year but some have slowed down a little. Always something...
What a nice haul of honey you have there Bruce, way to go!

Also quite a few in the Seattle area.
Really all over the state.

Hmm that’s interesting. Never heard of that.
That’s quite the harvest so early in the year, congrats!
Thanks. Will see how these escapes work. Tomorrow is the day!
That is amazing, those bees are really working. Good for you
Yes they are doing great. Everything seems to be early this year which concerns me a little for later in the summer.
I have great luck with them, mine are a different design though. If you leave them too long, usually over 48 hours, they tend to figure them out. On cooler nights, supers will be nearly “beeless”.
Yes it is still a little cool. From what I have heard 48 hours seems to be the magic number. Thanks for checking in!
i have heard of this method but i heard that it was used in conjunction with a fume board on top of the hive to drive the bees out of the supers
I guess that would work but this worked out ok. I left the bee escapes on the hives for about 48 hours to give them plenty of time.
Painters tape might be less aggressive and less expensive. It will remove way easier cleaner than duck tape.
Hey that’s a good idea. We had a massive rain the next day though. Do you think painters tape would hold up in a rainstorm?
They only work if its cool at night and they have to go back to the main cluster of bees. I used them with no luck in July. Ended up using fume board.
Ugh I hope that is not the case. It is still a little cool at night here. Maybe they will at least work for this harvest.
And I hope I can get then to work in June as well. Fume boards are fine but take forever. I would have to buy a bunch to be efficient at all using fine boards. Especially if taking 2 or 4 boxes of honey from each hive. Thanks for checking in.

Good video long snapper!
Thanks man!
Dadu63 you gotta tell me who you are lol! Shoot me a message on messenger at Bruce Jenne🙂
brucesbees ok I did. Look on messenger.
Where can I get that hive tool from again to help lift boxes to smoke under that you attach to your belt.
simpleharmonyfarms.com/hive-tool
It seemed to work out pretty well. Still need to figure out how to best use it.
You have to pick up those heavy honey boxes multiple times. Couldn’t do that.
Yep. I like using escape boards. But now use fume boards. Just don’t have time to use the bee escapes with the number of colonies I have now.

brucesbees thanks for your response and knowledge!

Yeah couldn’t hurt. I will be pulling these tomorrow.
Well, went and bought 2 today to try. Doesn’t hurt to have a Bee Supply 30 minutes away.
What do you use to make such strong smoke?
Thank you!
