BTW, I subscribed your channel because I've seen you speak about bees on several US channels doing zoom live chats, which I usually glean bee knowledge and I enjoy your videos.

Another welcome video, thanks for posting as I know you're now full time and busy as hell. The Rhombus board is my board of choice, simple and easy. Mind you after clearing the supers this week my hives are full to bursting with bees, seems like there is double the amount than usual for a September, I better get more syrup mixed up. 😂

We use a crown board that we flip over (our mentor Pat Curran) designed it, it's fantastic

      Sounds like a great design

Opened the hive today and the bees went absolutely nuts. Loads of them attacking me and my poor dog. Is this normal at this time of year? Any advice? All I want is one frame of honey

    • @gwenyngruffydd

That’s normal for this time of year.
Keep the dog in the car next time.
Nothing that the smoker can’t handle if your only taking a frame

@@gwenyngruffydd poor dog got stung about a dozen times, they got me once through the glove. The smoker didn't seem to have any affect on them today.

@Tony Uk I do plan to leave them for the rest of the year. Just wanted to take out one frame of honey. This is my first year as a beekeeper.

My preferred method too. It does take that extra trip, and in my case usually about 24 hours to clear the supers, but it is much more gentle, less stress, and hardly any bees in your honey room.
On a side note I put an extracted super back on a hive to ease off congestion/swarming and a couple of weeks later removed it again and decided to extract the honey even if it was only half full to avoid winter storage of overly wet frames. The honey was quite dark, has a cheesy smell, very thick viscosity, and a strange taste of sweet and bitter at the same time. The only thing I can imagine is that it might be Goldenrod, even if I am not aware of any growing in within the foraging area. Does anyone else have the same I wonder? - and is it Goldenrod? I have never experienced that before myself.

Can’t say I have seen or tried Goldenrod honey. You should send a jar off to get analysed to see what’s in it! 😁
