- In this five-part tutorial series, we'll review the basics of Avid Sibelius 7.5, so you can get started fast and make music as quickly as possible. www.avidblogs.c...
In this lesson, we'll jump right in and cover the most fundamental elements of music notation: notes and rhythms. We'll go over how to enter music using the mouse, a virtual on-screen keyboard, and your computer keyboard, and we'll use your MIDI keyboard to play music right into Sibelius. We'll also cover how to select, copy, move and delete music in your score.
Mouse input - 1:43
Virtual keyboard input - 5:02
Keypad - 6:50
Move selected notes up an octave - 7:58
voices - 11:18
Step-time input using midi - 12:00
Flexi-time input using midi - 13:35
Select, copy, move and delete notes - 15:47
thanks for this
Takk frændi
Thanks that helps !!!
I found several tutorials but yours is the best. He is clean and fast. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks very much!
i mean they're literally the devs so
Thank you so much.....I learnt more in the first 5 minutes of your video than I did trying to slog through the project tutorials in the program.
Excellent instructional, just what i've been looking for. Much appreciated Avid
I just switched from Finale to Sibelius today, Such a relief!!! Wow. And great tuto.
Great tutorial, and very hands on rather than wasting time!
Thanks.
Love your music notation program Sibelius - the needed variety, intuitive to use and simple once you get used to it. Thank you, that's great work.
Great tutorial! Explained very clearly and straight to the point. The shortcuts are very helpful too.
I'll give this series a try as I am using Sibelius more regularly and hopefully it will clear up a lot of loose-ends...
Step 1: *QUIT SIBELIUS*
Why? I am researching software
@@AllWheatherSim it's a stupid meme, it started in this video (th-cam.com/video/dKx1wnXClcI/w-d-xo.html) which might be more useful to you
@@prototypeinheritance515 thanks-just watched the link
Four minutes in and I've found this really helpful. thanks
Will Sibelius import a scanned piece of sheet music that needs editing of both words and notes?
I want to get into music composition, but it's hard finding videos on scoring. In 2001, I used Cakewalk Home Studio 7 at first clicking every single note, then later on, a MIDI Keyboard. I haven't written music in over a decade. Everything has shifted to Ableton, FL Studio, Cubase. I have Pro Tools and am interested in Sibelius because of its integration across Avid software. What is a good workflow for a beginning composer? What is considered essential sound equipment to create a home studio? The bare minimum.
this is a very good software to use for notation and reading notes and to add them to your work and i am happy to use it never had a problem with it
So how does one get it to work ..or even open? I downloaded Sibelius First. Useless.
thanks for the tutorial..... how can i set up the staves (piano 1 and 2) for piano duet or 4 hands composition? where i can also hear the result as a piano duet not piano solo?
How on earth is it that now, after more than EIGHT versions of Sibelius, the is STILL not any feature for naming brackets/groups of orchestral instruments in addition to individual instrument names. The other thing this is utterly mind-numbing is the fact that NO ONE at Sibelius tech support even grasps what this issue IS! Astonishing.
Hey man, I am currently working on an Idea for score music programs like Sibelius.
If you could just tell me what else you find annoying, I can add it to my target list and start making this really kick-ass!
Sibelius will NOT allow you to turn OFF automatic spacing update, so that when you do the slightest change to an already tweaked measure it completely reverts back to default. Astonishing.
so
-grouping identification for individual parts
-custom spacing update function
Got it! If more comes up. Don't hesitate to post here.
Actually, the need is to be able to attach names to groups and instruments INDEPENDENT of each other so that, say, Horns, as a group, may be named, and the 1st/2nds and the 3rd/4ths may be named, independently and aligned and positioned independently. The spacing problem is that you cannot FREEZE the spacing in place once you've tweaked it. Nothing is more disturbing than to spend vast amounts of time on a complicated passage setting the spacing only to have it go ass over tea kettle simply by adding an accidental to one note in the measure...argh!
I got you the first time, I think I framed it differently.
Say,
we have a set:
group - Orchestra
Subgroups - | Horns | Strings | reeds | timpani
And you want like, naw man! we got 2 groups of horns one tells the tale of the hunter and the other the role of the deer.
so you get:
Orchestra
Sub groups - | Horns | Strings | Reeds | Timpani
sub sub group | Hunter horns | Deer Horns|
still being played by Tom, Dick, harry and the 3 stooges.
Their names are not afected by group changing, only the hierarchy.
That
And
The nodes for custom framework between the spacing must be capable of being applied with anchorpoints preventing that wich otherwise undermines your specified wishes of spacing
I'm new to a Sibelius program of my own. I'm hoping to get started asap on re writing some tunes I had written on a different program. I hope this can be done simply. The other program copies were lost on a computer that crashed, I'm working from print outs I'd done.
Help! I have already written up my score, but I realise now I need to have an anacrusis in it. how do I add one?
Avid Sibelius has this sleek look. Bravo! 🙂
I've watched this 6 times in 3 days!
Instructions seemed sound, but even on a tablet the cursor’s etc. were very small making it hard to see what he was talking about when I referred to certain buttons for example the delete key. Highlighting them would have been helpful
Thank you so much. It is very clear and so well explained. An excellent tutorial.
Excellent teaching
I wish I had seen these tutorials before I slogged through the projects as listed in the manual. Eyesight not good, etc. Can you tell me how I can play something on the Sib keyboard and have it magically appear on my new score? Been trying to follow tutorial but I'm old.
How do you structure 16th note patterns :(
None of my flags are attaching
And you hardly even explained step time.
How are the notes changing? Is it guessing your notes? Are you manually using your number pad?
Tried to buy a permanent Sibelius version. Website still insisted to allow for future payments, so could not buy the product. Tried to send Avid an email... impossible because the form asks to select a product name, but there is no field for that. What a mess.
hi, what´s the new features about libraries in sibelius 8.3?...is it possible to continue using aria player and the libraries for this player in sib 7.1.3?
the same question about the SSP for libraries for Kontakt, etc...
I will waiting for your reply!
thanks!
what configuration and model of the tablet?
I want to install sibelius on the tablet
great tutorial! Can we also create a karaoke track of a song using this software? Its like removing the vocals from any song and then sing along with the back ground music of a song.
Thanks a lot sir. Could you please assist me with 7.5 activation key and particulars? I'd really b grateful.
Great tutorial. Thank you for helping me!

Hello, having trouble placing Coda signs in the right place so it can go Coda to Coda. My scores never seem to go to the Coda at the end of the piece. Thank you
Is cross-staff beaming possible on Sibelius 7 First?
Please help! How can I make an eight note into a grace note? I searched and tried everything Sibelius suggested but nothing worked.. Bitte Hilfe: ich brauche eine Achtelnote als Vorschlag aber alles was die Sibelius Suchfunktion als Lösung anbietet funktioniert nicht!
4,5 ect do not relate to the note length on windows...any suggestions?
How do i disable all automation functions?? There was a notation software for windows 95 that was one of a kind just because i could fill a whole page with notes on any direction.Kinda like sandbox. And then play them back and it would sound like a storm.
Is there some place i can take lessons to learn Sibelius in NYC?
I've created a new hymn arrangement using pencil and staff paper. Some notes are whole and some are quarter. I am having great difficulty trying to get a quarter note to sit directly above my half noteson the same staff. Worse than frusterating.. jWhat am I missing? is it really that hard to do? I am using different voices but am not sure how to deal with sometimes having to write 4 notes and other times- seven- is this not done? I don't see any turorials showing how to do this... I'm getting the feeling that it's too complicated. Hope not.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Are there any other notation programs that have alphabetic input like at 6:30 with or without numpad shortcuts? I used Sibelius since V2 or 3, but it's not much different now than it was then (except for the terrible microsoft style ribbon menus...)
I wish this type of input was available in ANY daw... Anyone have any tips?
What if you don't have a numeric keypad? IE working on a laptop?
Then you are screwed! Start using Dorico by Steinberg and you won't need a numeric keypad. Also all the shortcuts make a lot more sense and the interface is much more simplified.
You can get a USB external keypad. They are not that expensive. Or alternatively, but not as convenient, use an external keyboard that has a keypad.
Had the same problem. This one really helps: www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=514316&groupid=3&&guest=1
you can change the keyboard shortcut settings to laptop style in the preference and use you number rows instead.
Hi there, Please could you explain why Sib is creating other parts when I have only a Piano playing? I can of course 'Choose' the instrument but OK is not selctable. If I allow Sib to choose I get a Buitar and a Bass in the Parts where there is no Bass or Guitar Just a Piano. Thanks in advance - Aindre
It depends on which version you have, if you have the free version, you only piano for melody.
Will this apply to Ultimate?
Good job here bro 👊
Hello, I am a user of your primary competitor in software music notation. I recently upgraded and my computer keyboard entry method no longer works as it did in another release from a few years past. At this point I feel their company has made me a paying beta tester and I am fed up with incomplete notation software which wastes my time and degrades my investment in notation technology. If I switch to your software can I be assured I will not be an unwilling beta tester for your software? Thanks.
How about starting by teaching people how to set up the program so notes make a sound?
Awesome tutorial.
Thank you!
Regarding minute 14:00
Sibelius is able to write the notes in the partiture directly from MIDI? This means, while you are playing LIVE using MIDI, Sibelius will write the notes for you?
yup
The "live recording" version is awful and unreadable, though. Sibelius claims you can't keep a steady beat, but the jokes on it because it can't even write itself down in the correct time-signature when it's playing.
All that time i was wayting for him to play it : (
Me too! 😆
So I'm currently trying to write a song and my current problem is that I have a large section of music where I realized that I should have added an eighth rest to and now its at the end of the phrase and not the beginning. How can I put the rest at the beginning of the phrase without deleting any notes. I can't figure this out please help.
Yeah - I have the same problem - I am a new user, just a couple weeks and need to add notes or rests to a place other than the unwritten blank space on the right, but cannot place the insertion point between the already-placed notes. Called the 800 number, but they want more money before they answer the question, so they sent me back to this same tutorial.
If I understood this correctly, here's what I would do:
1. Select all the notes from where you want the rest to the end (click on the first one, hold shift, click on the last).
2. Cut them (ctrl-x).
3. Put in your rest.
4. Click on the next rest after the one you inserted, and paste all the notes back in (ctrl-v).
where do you show that sibelius can import from a printed score?
kp
For piano pls tel me how to record bass and treble clef separately when either 1 of them is playing...I want to record right hand seperately with reference to left hand..
Murali VZ
1.) On the main menu, under New Score, click Blank, click Create.
2.) Right-click on the page and click Instruments.
3.) Under Keyboards, click Piano and click 'Add to Score'. It will add a Piano (a) and Piano (b).
4.) Click on the clef that you want to record.
5.) Click on 'Play' tab and press the Record (red circle) button.
Hope this helps.
I’ve heard on TH-cam some piano teachers recommend writing out the score of the music your learning in order to “really” learn it. Do you agree? And does Sibelius have a built in keyboard to play and record the notes on the score?
Did you see the video lol? For the second question...
In SIBELIUS the stage lines go right through the GUITAR TAB NUMBERS, anyone know how to break the lines so there is space around the tab ?!
this vedio is really good for new user, it's helpful thank you very much
can sibelius play back complicated polyrythms
Very nicely explained!
Is this the software the latest rock n roll singers are using? Is this where the "sampling synthesizer" effect is coming from in these new rock n roll songs like Troye's "Youth"?
I can't tell if you're kidding or not. If you're not, no. You use DAWs like Ableton, Logic, or FL with Kontakt plugins for instruments + samples/loops. Softsynths like Serum or Sylenth1 are usually used as VST plugins, too.
Thanks. I wasn't kidding. What I meant by rock n roll artists are folk like DJ Snake, Mike Posner, The Chainsmokers etc. Maybe this renosance of the '80s to '90 synth sound is actually "pop". It sounds like a form of rock n roll to me but using synth sounds in place of electric guitars.
That's dance music. But anyway, that sound - I had to help someone get the Chainsmokers sound the other day. It takes a bit of work, but most bands like that aren't too hard. Here read this equipboard.com/pros/the-chainsmokers read that. Their thing is mostly synthbrass and they use sylenth1 and serum mostly , whereas most of teh pop dance stuff uses nexus. Chainsmokers sound is more complicated (they're actual producers), the kid you mentioned with the shitty EDM/pop and most modern pop/dance is just nexus presets. You will be shocked when you listen to Nexus and realize that yes you too can be an EDM artist. EDM is like punk or hardcore when we I was a kid (IDK how old you are) and I realized it's 3 chords and started a band with my equally untalented friends. It's very very easy music to make. I hate it, but the kids like it and if it gets them interested in writing music, eh wtf. So got get logic ($150 or $200) or ableton intro ($100) and acquire a copy of kontakt and nexus and you can probably make better music than that first kid in a bout a week if you have any musical training. Hell, even if you don't. The key is the softsynths.
If you're musically trained, I can explain what they're doing too that way, but I think it's easier if you just look at the software. It's mostly that, what they're actually playing musically is very simple. A lot of stuff you may think is playing is arpeggiations or saws (it's automatic-ish). No BS, about 90% of modern music is just having the right software. It's not just EDM or whatever. Scoring uses software heavily too (and not SIbelius ) esp stuff like Heavyocity's Damage for Percussion. I just recorded a cumbia on my couch (no samples) in my DAW that's pretty much indistinguishable from live instruments. And with multi-racks, I can do it pretty quickly. I recorded a piece using a digital instrument for Kontakt that was a Fazioli, an instrument that costs more than my house but which I purchased at some point from imperfect samples for @$60 or so. Again indistinguishable from a real piano (except for the fact no one would ever let me near a Fazioli the way I play) last week. The technology out there now is amazing. Check it out.
Hey thanks a bunch! I'll certsinly check out those softwares.
how to make the Sib.file into a pdf file ?
Guys help me how to add an off-beat, upbeat or anacrusis in the middle of the sheet
Can someone just drop a link where one can download Note Performer 3 plz
Superb tutorial!
easier to watch between 1.25 and 1.5 speed!
helpful vid thanks
The UI reminds me of Microsoft One Note.
At one point, it quit letting me create chords--it simply overwrote the existing note with the new note rather than adding the new one. I'm sure I could post another question on a forum about this, but it seems you shouldn't have to be posting endless questions while learning basic functionality.
whats the return button?
The cheese melts in the microwave.
THE MUSIC MELTS IN SIBELIUS.
Great tutorial, Shame about the Avid customer service and support / help = non-existent. Many people are not even able to get their cersions of Sibelius to the point where they can learn to do anything in it.
To avoid going crazy with this guy, change the speed of his videos to 2 or 1.5
Very Helpful, thank you so much !
FANTASTIC, thanks Phil! Have subbed ;-)
How did you quickly make the c#? Weird to not mention that.
Excellent tutorial thanks :-)
When i edit a note length, it overwrites other notes. How do i make it ignore bars?
Anyone?
I dont know but it kinda makes sense to not ignore bars.
I solved it. It's called MIDI editing, and it is hundreds of years more advanced than stave writing. You just need any basic music making program. Sibelius has locked itself into the complications of the disadvantaged musically educated of the 21st Century. Yes, bars should definitely be ignored when extending notes and dropping new notes anywhere into a song you're dreaming up. Modern programs do this without looking back. Programs like Sibelius and Finale and now defunct thanks to MIDI editing. You can switch to score view mode in those programs whenever you want anyway. As a software developer, I find the Sibelius interface sinful. And Julian, thanks for the shrug. I hope you don't live your entire life that way.
I absolutely agree with you. I actually use midi editing every day and it makes everything much more efficient. What I meant is when you have a certain time signature it makes sense. You'd have to connenct notes in order to achieve that which can be a pain.
Wow.. thanks for this.
Is there any sound to these tutorials? This seems to be horribly complicated software.
I wonder, how to use Sibelius on Mac laptops which don't have numeric keypad? Even the just announced MacBook Pro 16" doesn't have numeric keypad, which is a shame.
Hate Avid. Just little things.... the default staff presets to open in Sibelius.... a simple piano bass and treble clef is the LAST option when starting a new score. Why? A simple bass/treble staff is literally the most popular and widely used setup in music. Especially when getting started.... it's just so ridiculous. No thought to design.
thousands of likes ! great job
Can you make a marching drumline score?
SnareDrummer Yes you can. In the main menu, under 'New Score', there's a section for 'Marching Band and Percussion'.
Cool
Of course i figure out this program is better than finale 5 months after graduating college. 😂😂😂
Sibelius need to built a grace after a note. You already have grace before a note, why don’t you add grace after a note...?
I closed the keypad, how can I make it appear again?
+Ramiro Sotto
I did the same thing yesterday. Did you find how to get it back? I dont really want to watch the video.
+Ramiro Sotto
Oh. there it is.
They call them fingers, but I've never seen them fing. Oh, there they go.
+Ramiro Sotto Go to the tab "view" click on "panels" check the box "keypad"
Woah, how come the notes sound like it's from a real piano? I'm also using Sibelius 7.5 but the notes sound like it's from an electric keyboard, the really old ones.
Have you got Sibelius 7 Sounds installed? If so, make sure they are selected in your score by choosing the 'play' tab, then clicking 'configuration' on the far left and making sure Sibelius 7 Sounds in ticked.
Thankyou!!
Sibelius 6 was great, that is, before Avid got their hands on it, since when it has been pressurising like hell to force people to purchase 'updates', some of which are perfectly useless. Avid (not Sibelius) has been pressuring for more funds and has hardly improved the software a whit... They have even cancelled comment on some channels... Moreover a lot depends on the country you live in... Have Avid got assets there? Are they useable???
Hey guys!! How to perform a 'Long Fall' on sibélius? To with version 8, but I can not make the misery of the program execute ...................... ah until who says that the program does not execute, but if you give A look at the examples scores (scores already in the program) has funk, jazz and etc ..... right in the funk there are several pieces of the score that performs the 'fall'. Whoever has a light on this will be grateful
The cheese melts in the microwave
have to learn the meaning of the notes first.
Sibelius does not work at all for me, the sound doesn't work, I can't place anything and I can save anything plz help
no
Should've watched this months ago! lol
How do I change the note value ?
;)
Sibelius is horribly complicated. It's ten times faster just to write the notes by hand. I would return it for a refund but they don't give refunds. I have had Sibelius for almost a year and still can't figure out how to separate the left hand input from the right hand input like you see in NORMAL music. I'm not sure what percentage of composers use keyboard but you would think that a piano score would separate the note inputs to Bass or Treble clef. If you play a note two octaves below middle C the monitor shows the note as if it were on a Treble Clef only. The only positive thing I can say is that the notes look nice. They have plenty of courses and tutorials but you have to pay for them. So expect to pay more than just the price of the software if you ever expect to use it. Don't waste your moneyRead more Show less
I find that you must click to select which clef you wish to play notes into. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way for Sibelius to input right and left hands simultaneously, instead if has a freak-ass low treble note that's impossible to read.
It's not "ten times faster to write the notes by hand" if you're going to be transposing the score into various different keys!
Are we far from a time when the PlayBack can use fairly accurate actual instrument sounds instead of elec piano tones? Or maybe we are there now?
note performer has incredible playback sounds and phrasing, etc
Download Finlandia then Symponieds then violin concerto This is what I understand
I know u where just inputting random notes but i wrote 2 5 7 then a 6 instead of a 1 and i cried
4:28 NO DON'T DO IT!
