More excellent instruction. We, as viewers, gain a lot of knowledge and insight from watching your projects unfold. I particularly enjoy when you show follow up progress of plants that you have worked on. Thanks.
This is so helpful! Thank you for making such an informative video. I have a monstera adansonii that is absolutely taking off and I was debating how to deal with it outgrowing its pole now that it is finally putting out mature leaves. Thank you for such a perfect solution!
These look beautiful You reminded me that I needed to work on my plants. I use clay. I’m sure it’s more strenuous on my body. Your plants look very healthy growing in plastic. And the added ventilation in the plastic pot is helpful for ventilation. I might consider changing over to plastic. You have a double green thumb. I talk to my plants too. They appreciate the love. Thank you for the great video. And thanks for reminding me about expiration dates on SuperThrive.
Thank you so much! I love using plastic pots and my go to now for everything. Occasionally, I use something else but my plants love the airflow ☺️ I can’t repot without superthrive lol I just feel like it helps them recover 🤗
@@ronjakh How does a non porous matter retain anything well. I am looking at Melissa’s plants. They grow beautifully using her method. My opinions are from whatever research and many years of attending classes at The Indoor Gardening Society of New York. They do have chapters throughout the US. Please understand my comment was conversational not confrontational. My other concern is that the plant will topple over being top heavy and planted in a light plastic pot. I’m going to try her method and mine. I think I honestly love the beauty of terra cotta. And I ask for help when I need to move things. When I first started making structures for composting outdoors I used the coated metal. It looks just as difficult to work with as the plastic. I like the way Melissa works and her choices for securing her plants. Plants need to breathe just like human bodies. They require water. And they should sweat and release fluid. I appreciate your opinions.
That was a difficult job...But you made it look so easy....Thanks for the inspiring video I learned a lot...Love the back yard river view too....And the added kitties
Wow your monstera adansonii are pretty…I had it before but they died because thrips infested them😔. Will buy again and will make a moss pole. Thank you for your video 🥰.
Just subbed, really love your content so far. Your plant chores were spot on. So much seems personal preference and “by my experience” which makes it so much more accessible (at least to me). One can know the science and “rules” for what can and will work, but per household there can be so many variables. This one was a gorgeous video, I live very far North and its finally warming up now so I’m itching for an adansonii to ship soon. Watching this helped the itch and you’ve made me so excited =) Keep up the work, looking forward to binge watching some more tomorrow.
I remember when you first where trying to get her off the plastic pole and putting her on the wire pole. Didn’t seem like it was that long ago. It’s so pretty. 😊
Wow just heard that she's 6ft in this video and that's almost as tall as you.....wait......how tall are you? She's so beautiful and has grown beautifully despite the plastic inside the wire...well done!!!!
Hello Melissa from Puerto Rico!!! Nice chop and extend. If you think that’s windy, I made a video yesterday that I thought everything was going to fly away. 😂😂😂
Watching you do the chop and extend, I was thinking- since you use a support stick in back, maybe don’t bother taking out the moss and just sit the pole on top of the substrate? You can zip tie the support stick to the inside of the pot for security and the pole to the stick. I would think the roots would find ground since you have the long one growing? I’m doing a chop and extend in a couple months, so it’s very interesting seeing the process. I love the giant adansonii leaves. Nice job!
The stake adds a little support but it stands up without it. The base in the soil really needs secured well so it doesn’t fall over. Wet moss plus the bigger leaves makes the pole somewhat top heavy. I have the base sitting in a heavier ceramic for added support too but I don’t see sitting the pole on top the soil working but haven’t tried it :)
Sure! I used to use plastic bags all the time to increase humidity as a little makeshift greenhouse. you have to be careful of leaves touching the bag though or they can rot from the moisture inside.
@@plantsbymelissa You have and I've watched them all but it looks like a piece of cake when you do it. I end up spending a lot of time trying to get soil to stay in the moss pole and getting it to stand up straight. I use 1/2" pvc pipes with holes drilled in them for self watering and it just seems like it takes me all day to do a 2' pole. I'm switching over to the metal poles with no pvc.
Hi there! I love your videos. I'm thinking of changing a few of my plants over to this method of growing on moss poles so that I can 'chop and extend'. But i'm wondering how often you have to water these moss poles when grown like this? And what do you feed your plants with because obviously the growing medium wouldn't have much nutrients in it? And information would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
Hi, I'm going to link my moss pole playlist here for you. I have several more videos on them. I water mine twice a week and I only use a slow release fertilizer in the soil. I've used slow release for about a year now and I feel like my moss poles are getting enough nutrients. I also use rainwater most of the time which I water through the poles and rainwater has lots of nutrients/benefits ☺️ th-cam.com/play/PLYt1-9zY5oEwLk6kQ2kNL_ZKvDFfA80lm.html
Subscribed....Very informative video. I purchased an Adansonii about a year ago which is now about 2 feet tall with many vines which is ready for a moss pole for the Chop and Extend process. Its in a 7 inch pot with 4 individual plants in it so its pretty bushy looking. I'm thinking of repotting it by splitting it into 2 six inch pots ( 2 or maybe 3 plants per pot) with chop and extend poles. How many plants per pot would you recommend? Thanks for the great video!
Yay thank you!! I’m glad it was helpful! I love hearing that 🤗 I would say 3 is a good number for adansonii. You can add more to fill in the pole as it grows but sometimes it gets a little crowded or by the time you chop not all of the vines catch up and you’re left with just a couple and one vine tends to grow first for most of my poles. Also, when you have a couple vines growing you really appreciate each new leaf that grows. It’s definitely personal preference and what you find you like over time 🥰
I think you’re removing coco husks rather than coco coir. The husks are gritty bark like stuff. The v coir is like soil and retains moisture. I don’t believe the husks retain water like the coir does. If you’re removing chunky things than it’s coco husks. Like the covering on a coconut.
Hey Melissa. Great video and a lot of work too. Does the wire get rusty in the soil? Have you watched that channel? “ Sydney plant guy” he has a LOT of moss pole made about of some sort of white material and his plants are thriving

Thank you! Glad to share my process to help anyone else! 🥰💗
Super helpful to see up close all the steps to doing this. I’m not very familiar with moss poles so this made everything much more clear. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! I’m glad to share my process and more insight on them. 🥰
I’m always so impressed with all your moss poles. They are so beautiful!
Glad you like them! Thank you!! They bring me so much joy 🥰
My face when you cut off the roots of the base plant😲

Super thrive expires in two yrs!! Thanks for the tip! Mine is over 3 yrs old!!!
You bet! I didn't know either! oops lol

Your moss poles are amazing!!! I really need to up my moss pole game 💚💚💚
Thank you so much! They’re so special because you watch them grow from so small. Each new leaf is so exciting 🥹

You are so welcome! Thank you for watching! It’s so peaceful out here 🥹💗
I just love your plants and the way you display them.
Thank you so much! ❤❤
That was a big job, but you did it like a pro. Great job, she looks great!
Thank you so much! It took about 3 hours for everything with filming 😂 but it was worth it! 🥰🙏🏼
Good video I just got one and had no idea how to take care of it lol thanks for the content 👏
Good info.
One day I won’t blow through my superthrive in 5 months, but hopefully no time soon because it will mean I don’t have many plants anymore.
Wow your monstera adansonii are pretty…I had it before but they died because thrips infested them😔. Will buy again and will make a moss pole. Thank you for your video 🥰.

aw thank you!! I know it seems like it went fast! She's doing well so far!
Great job Melissa!
Thank you!!
Thank you for the video!
My pleasure!
Great video! Thanks for sharing that. I just extended my pole on my Adasonii. Hoping it will one day look as good as yours!
Yay!! I’m sure yours will size up in no time 🥰
Beautiful work 😊
Does your kitty try to eat any of your plants?
Mine does, so I have to keep it away from his reach 😳
You have such a great energy and I always look forward to your next video. The cats are always a welcome addition when they come in and help.
Thank you I really appreciate that! 🥹 the cats love coming in to help 😂🥰
When i chop & extend a plant, i cut it the day before. This allows the cut to dry. It's not super important, but it can prevent rot.🌱
Beautiful job!
Thank you so much 😀
What do you do with the bottom half? Do you keep it or throw away?
Great video!! Thanks for sharing ❤🪴
Thanks for watching! 💗💗
Wow just heard that she's 6ft in this video and that's almost as tall as you.....wait......how tall are you? She's so beautiful and has grown beautifully despite the plastic inside the wire...well done!!!!
Sorry if I missed this, but what are you going to do with the chopped?
Where did you buy your pots with holes?
What wire do you use for the moss pole?
Hello Melissa from Puerto Rico!!! Nice chop and extend. If you think that’s windy, I made a video yesterday that I thought everything was going to fly away. 😂😂😂
Thank you! lol we get some crazy storms here but haven’t seen much wind all winter 😂

I wa wondering what the tags are on your plants, would they be beneficial nematodes?
They're beneficial mites! I get mine from natures good guys :)
Melissa, can the props be put in a clear plastic bag to help with wilting, or will it be too wet for them?
Sure! I used to use plastic bags all the time to increase humidity as a little makeshift greenhouse. you have to be careful of leaves touching the bag though or they can rot from the moisture inside.
Very impressive. I would've been a nervous wreck.
😂 I think since I’ve done a couple of them I felt better but still makes me nervous! 🤗

I use chopstick to push the moss out from the bottom. It makes it super easy.
These are the tips I’m here for right before my first chop and extend. Thank you!

Yes :) my brain keeps saying coir but they still retain moisture. I don’t like it because I feel it retains too much for me.

Does the wire get rusty in the soil?
Have you watched that channel? “ Sydney plant guy” he has a LOT of moss pole made about of some sort of white material and his plants are thriving
I haven’t noticed them rusting. The wire is coated it should protect against any damage ☺️
What are all the tags on your plants?
predatory mites :)
Interesting. Thanks for the reply and teaching me about something new.😊
I wish you offered these up for sale or gifts to local hobbyists. I’m near Pooler.
Maybe one day but a lot of my plants are sentimental to me and it’s hard to let them go 🥹
💚💚
Love uour nice chunky tuxedo Kitty in ur video
❤
Have you thought about hiding the sachets on the back of the leaves instead of being so visible. It’s a very distracting look.
It’s easier for the mites to climb out if they have a surface to crawl on to but I don’t find them distracting to me 🙏🏼
Hello my monstera adansonii new leaf broke before the stem can grow out, will the stem still grow out?
Hi Melissa you are so beautiful! are you married?
