In this video we show you how to upholster the front arm panel or front face of a sofa. A face is a decorative piece that runs down the front of the arm of a sofa or a chair. It's great to use on scroll arms and finishes the piece off beautifully. This a full upholstery tutorial from start to finish - this chair didn’t originally have facings so we had to make the facings from scratch! This is an upholstery for beginners tutorial so even a novice upholsterer should be able to follow along!

Great timing to watch this video. I took apart some Steelcase accent chairs from the 80’s. High quality metal back pamels with built in metal tack strip. Way cool. But there were these plastic plugs holding the back panel onto the back rest cushion and I had no idea what they were called. Thank you!

You are a Master craftsman. My limit is a buttoned dressing table seat that was a pain to do. People don't realise the work and strength required in removing fabric and then recovering and in some cases rebuilding furniture. All credit to you.

Hi there! Great job!!! Do you have any uniquely fashionista fabulous ideas I could try?? My gorgeous, stupidly comfortable gold camelback sofa, and love seat look at though a pack of Wolverines broke in and had at it!! The poor arm panels shredded to bits and look like angel hair pasta by my adorably demonic feline felons. I must do something fast! I actually need to re-do the whole set but first things first. And wrapping my sofas in thick plastic is not an option!! lol I thought of going with a carved Victorian style wood, and adding many protective top coats and perhaps some brass appliqués, brass tacks, wood appliqués also with 97 coats of top coat, shellac.....and maybe dip them in Kevlar and tabasco sauce?? Then I was thinking of adding some kind of decorative metal, hammered copper? I know slugs hate copper but not sure about cats!! lol Or I could relive my wild mohawk sporting punk days and cover them with long pointy studs!! A wee bit of a deterrent but they would get even when I'm asleep!! The usual, plotting my murder! lol Also, what are your thoughts on using rope instead of the matching trim. I have a bronze settee with a brown and gold rope and it amazing and tied in on the throw cushions.
I wonder if maybe doing something snazzy with a wood base, guilted, glazed, with an aged dirty castle crackle, a few appliqués and a top coat or 9.... of epoxy? If they can make kitchen counters out of it, it should off some protection.
I would absolutely love to do a gorgeous burl veneer with some inlay, then topping it off with 4 inch thick epoxy.!! lol
I'm being silly but the pain is real!! My sofas are screaming in agony!! I know I could very easily just redo them in a thick fabric but they won't last the week.... deep sigh. I wonder if pleather would be more durable? I had one other idea of having them cut from marble and sealed. All that would do is sharpen their claws into death spikes for the rest of the furniture but it could be really cool looking..... or ghastly tacky. I often walk that razor thin line!!

Hi Sarah! Thanks for watching, it’s really appreciated. I use upholstery spray adhesive by a company called Martin’s in the UK. However, most upholstery spray adhesive works well 😊👍🏻
Is this how you always install arm panels? Do you use different methods? If so what are they… I was unfamiliar with fir trees… I have research more how to use them..
I was going to use panel nails to apply arm panels, but there a lot of places out of stock… need different methods
Hi Heather. I almost always use these fir trees when installing arm facings. There are other method also, some people use nails the same way I use for trees but you just hammer the facings on. Also if you have a fabric with a heavy weave you can also use a pin gun to pin them on from the front and because of the weave of the fabric you can hide the marks it leaves by just playing around with the weave a bit. What if mine didn't have fir trees, and there are just nails, and they won't hammer back in flush?
Hi Leah - sorry for the delay in responding. If the nails won’t go back in flush, you can always add fir trees - I find it so much easier to attach facings with them. If your wood has split or is damaged on your facing, you can always make new ones as shown in this video. Hope this helps.
