  • Happy Dollhouse Sunday!
    In today's video I am making a start on the interior of the house by figuring out where I want to put stairs and then making my cardboard backing for the paint/wallpaper. You can read the accompanying blog post here:

    A carpenter showed me how to glue wood. You have to put wood glue on the part you are going to glue piece to, then put glue on the piece and wait until both pieces are tacky, then stick them together and hold them together until you feel they are securely attached (for now). That will hold together long enough for you to get SUPPORT for the two pieces until they dry, about 24 hours. Without support, the pieces will just fall down because the glue is wet. You have to use both risers to support the steps. Usually wooden pieces are clamped with clamps to support them, but you have no way to clamp steps with their right angles. Start gluing top step then bottom step first. As you glue each step, run painter's tape across them and around the stringers tightly, causing tension. Remove excess glue with toothpick. Use wood glue only as it has small particles of wood and make pieces bond solidly to each other.

      Thank you so much for these great tips! I wasn't letting the glue get tacky first so I bet that will help. You have saved me loads of frustration for when I go to build! I appreciate it :)

      @@thedilettantesdollhouse You are welcome. Also, use enough glue so that it isn't too dry, about 1/8" thick between the two pieces of wood, and just remove the glue that oozes off the corners.

    Who knew cereal boxes could be so versatile?! I used them for the walls of my dolls house too only I’ve made mine removable so if ever I want to change the look of the room I can. 😊. That staircase looked frustratingly fiddly.

      I saw how you were using the cereal boxes for your walls and I am considering doing that as well. I like the idea of this dollhouse to be "fixed" once it's done if that makes sense? But I do love the idea of having a dollhouse to change around according to my moods and such so I might do that in another project. The staircase was very fiddly and a bit frustrating lol. I might try a different glue when I go to work on the whole project as I don't think my patience will stand it lol.

      @@thedilettantesdollhouse Oh I quite agree with your idea of this doll house being fixed. I can understand that. 😊 Sounds like a good idea to try different glue. Good luck!

    Sorry to keep popping in here with comments. haha If you are covering the walls with cereal box why not wallpaper on the cereal box before placing in the dollhouse?

      No need to apologize I love the feedback! Yes I plan to cover the cardboard before adhering it into place but I appreciate you mentioning that I think it will make it a lot easier that way!

    You might consider a spiral staircase, there are some good tutorials on how to make them. Bentley House Minis has a really good one.

      Thank you for the suggestion! I did consider that and I love Bentley House Minis channel-such great info! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    If you sand it and scrape it down to the original wood the glue will stick better.

    Could you divide the stairs in 2 and make a landing mid way up? That way, it may be able to be tucked to the side. Maybe you could build a closet or cabinet underneath. Just an idea. Either way, it's going to be amazing. 😊

    • @thedilettantesdollhouse
      @thedilettantesdollhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did think of a landing as I really love them but with the doors and windows it was tough to find placement. I do think I might do an closet underneath though! Thank you for the suggestions!

    Maybe if you had used both sides of the stairs it would have glued better and easier.

    • @thedilettantesdollhouse
      @thedilettantesdollhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the suggestion-the instructions had you glue only one side before putting it in place. You are right though I'm sure once the stairs are in place with both sides they will be much sturdier.

      @@thedilettantesdollhouse I don't see how only one side will hold without the support of the other stringer. Please read my comment above.

      @@rcelestefelix9299 Oh yes it will need the other side. These aren't the stairs I am using in the project but I was just using them as a visual to help me decide where to place the stairs. I will be building stairs and yes will need both stringers. Thank you for commenting!

    2 sets of stairs where your husband suggested. Then position the second floor stair the same way the same was it is on the first floor.

    Put stairs where your husband recommends, then leave open the top part at least

    Looking good! If you put some wax paper under where you're gluing, the glue won't stick where you don't want it to.

    Like the position at 7:20. Is doesn't cut the downstairs in half, and you can put a storage area under that would be bursting with skates or tennis rackets, old toys etc. A reciprocating saw could do a lot of the heavy cutting into the landing.

    • @thedilettantesdollhouse
      @thedilettantesdollhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great suggestion too-I would be able to keep the open feel of the downstairs while still having a storage nook for all sorts of goodies. You may have me re-thinking things :) Yes my husband has a reciprocating saw that should do the trick! I appreciate you watching and all your great suggestions!
