- Maybe you don't have everything together, I sure don't. But if we live in a time warp on overdrive, we will never get the chance to enjoy life. The past few weeks have taught me to enjoy the moment I'm in. Tonight, I'm just going to enjoy the rain and Eat Bulalo with the Girls.
Bulalô is a beef dish from the Philippines. It is a light colored soup that is made by cooking beef shanks and marrow bones until the collagen and fat has melted into the clear broth. Bulalo is native to the Southern Luzon region of the Philippines.

Food is such a big part of Asian life. A good friend of mine is Chinese and she always over orders and doesn't often miss an opportunity to buy more either. You are right that part of the reason is they don't want you / their friends / family to be short of food. My friend always boxes up the leftovers and makes them part of the next day's meal at home :)

Hi Tim, me and my Australian partner have been following your vids! Just wanted to help you out to understand certain things about our culture.
1. Men have to pay for everything - - Not true and not all the time. One thing you have to know is that courtship stage is probably when you have to pay for everything. If you are past that, normally we tend to pay for at least something during the dating stage and during marriage. However, this depends on the woman's employment as well. If Chrissy doesn't have a job, you gotta expect to be doing this the entire time. If she does however, it's only polite for her to offer to pay once in a while.
2. Paying for friends and relatives - Not all the time. Again, first meeting is OK but not all the time. You are not a personal atm for the entire family. The best thing to do here is talk to Chrissy and mention that you have a budget but only for both of you and can't always pay for another person. Setting this expectation will help you in the long run.
3. Ordering too much - Yes. When we have foreign visitors, it's like fiesta all the time. We wanna eat and make you try all the food we consider to be good so you get a taste of everything.
4. Drinking - a big no no in our culture. Drinking occasionally is OK but not all the time. When we were raised by our parents, the description of a good man is someone who doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. We compromise by understanding that alcohol here and there is OK. But not all the time. Good fun for us doesn't always mean drinking. My Aussie partner doesn't drink and it's one of the reasons why my parents approve of him and also the reason why we almost never argue.
I hope your relationship goes well. Communication is key. Its challenging to have different cultural backgrounds but talk to her about things you don't understand or not comfortable with. In the end, you want to be with a good woman, Filipino or not. :)

I think it's good for everyone to understand stuff about our culture 😂 it's just so different that we tend to get misinterpreted a lot of times. I think you hit the nail on the head, the girls would just rather order more than enough, than not order some for you and have you be hungry. You can always eat leftovers at home right? This is a very common thing in Asia, to make sure to have more than enough food (I grew up in Asia most of my life) But I think it is common in the South of the USA (my grandma was a southern woman) And it is considered a big nono to not give your guests and loved ones more than enough food. (Leftovers are very common and very tasty) Anyway, I am sure this is a happy memory for you :)

Funny story Tim, i have an older brother that has married a thai girl, he was always telling me how much food she ordered and ultimately how much she ate, she has a very lean figure also. A year ago my brother and his thai wife came over to England to visit us and she was put in charge of ordering the food. In my local city center we have an exclusive thai restaurant that will also allow for orders to be made and picked up in person. So she placed the order and i took a drive over there to pick up the food, my mouth nearly hit the floor when the person giving me the food told me the bill came to £246, the food was only for five people. At first i thought the cheeky blighter knowing i was paying the bill, but then the realisation hit that everything was lost in translation, and tbh it was all good as my freezer was stocked up on thai green and red curries for a couple of weeks afterwards, and it was bloody amazing too.

I lived all over the place & I realized that a lot of my gf’s did the same thing about over ordering food and whatever. My belief is that people who lived a life without things overcompensate when they have an opportunity. It’s a deep rooted survival thing. It isn’t malicious, it’s just a learned survival behavior.

When I first met my Indonesian wife, she would always cook humungous portions for me. Five egg giant omelettes with an entire pack of bacon and four pieces of toast. LoL shit like that. Her heart was in the right place, but I told her that she doesn't need to make such huge portions for only me. If i was watching the football game, she would open a whole bag of potato chips, peanuts, pretzels, popcorn, for only me. I told her that I may be a big guy, but I really don't eat that much. I was starting to get fat, so she has now learned about smaller portion sizes and it's all good. Your girl will as well.

Tim, I feel for ya brah sometimes it's hard to figure where u stand with the girls but I guess u just have to roll with it and try not to overthink it. This thing about Filipinas ordering lots of food. My wife and I live here in the United States and every time that we go to a restaurant or a fast food restaurant it seems to me that my wife orders a lot more than what she can eat. And the money comes out of both of our pockets so I believe this has to do with the fact that in the Philippines people put lots of food on the table. Of course, most of the food is rice and vegetables. Even at home, I eat Mexican food and so I just prepare what I am going to eat but my wife prepares a lot more than what she is going to eat.

I notice when me and my Filipino missus go out to a buffet to eat, she will load up her plate with portion sizes she cant finish.

That's good you bring plastic container, good habit not to waist food, looks like your having a great time, I wish I was back there, I miss Philippines so much, its okay to spend stuff like food and little things, I do that with girlies when I'm there, it wont put a dent on my wallet, it make them happy and it make me a hero for the day.

Definitely not a good idea to let your girlfriend hold and withdraw cash from your wallet. When your married for years then I would understand. I may be way off but just trying to give you advice from someone that's been through all of this and ended up in a happy Asian relationship for 30 years.

Hi Tim i am a Pilipina have foriegner husband and 2 kids. Everywhere we go for eat i always getting our left over. Not only in the Philippines although visit another country. Cause food wasting are not good specially me i feel hungry in midnight then i eat our left over foods or sometimes giving the left over food to homeless. God Bless you both. Stay happy....

Hi Tim, seems like you needed a lucky break in your life. enjoy every moment mate. I have been with my Filipina for 19 years I had to quickly learn the culture and it seems like they always hungry and eat loads of dishes. food is a way of life there so explore and enjoy I did and love the country and its people. If there will be any scams it's usually from the family and not outsiders. just ask many questions about what they say and do, you will learn fast!! it will all make sense later as you understand their life. Gradually, they will understand your culture and way of life too! keep the videos coming we enjoy very much thanks.

Don't know if your married or gf and bf friend, but the best thing to tell her is the budget... and future savings or plans. If she understands and you guys work together then its great. With restaurant over ordering, the good thing is you don't have to cook breakfast tomorrow. They try not waste food...unlike most, at least your getting your moneys worth.
