    To understand System of a Down and their lead Serj Tankian is to understand how political they are. Serj especially is an Activist more than a Musician. They are very much all about Anti-War, Anti-Nationalism and Anti-Authoritarianism; Serj's four grandparents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide. With System of a Down it is always political.

  • @JMulvy
    @JMulvy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This song holds dual meanings. It is both a commentary on the conditions of urban life in the US and compares it to parallels in the complicit events leading up to the Armenian Genocide. Where citizens became content with the status quo and allowed the genocide to take place. It usually goes hand-hand with Chopsuey which is more about the state of urban decay leading to regret and depression and ultimately suicide. The eating seeds part is a direct reference to the popularity of teens eating sunflower seeds in 2001 in the US as well as reports of when people were being kidnapped by death squads. There was one account of a group of men who got out of their truck and pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds to munch on as they watched with zero concern for the people being captured by the death squad "flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of our truck". That is why the majority of the song is so toned down and a bit depressing. It is like "the world has gone to shit and no one wants to do anything about it, so what else is there left to do but sit quietly and wait for my turn?"

    Haha great reaction! To me the song is about the chaos of life between the quiet peace before birth and after death and how some people pointlessly try to control it. The last verse also comes across as how they decide to live their chaotic life - aiming to be bright and bring vibrance to others lives, which kind of explains the hype and energy they put into their songs.

You guys need to be watching their videos. He's such a visual performer. Also the whole gmo thing is mostly a buzzword. It actually helps protect the corn, the crops. It acts as a deterrent from bugs that will eat up all the crops.

    This song itself made me listen to more metal music and completely opened my eyes to so much more good music .

    Musical subject aside, that was the most entertaining reaction and conversation of yours that I have seen. I literally laughed out loud at least four times. Thanks, it was good.

    Oh my gosh you guys, I didn't know you reacted to this. I feel I know you so well now. LOL I just watched your stream tonight and Lex you're pregnant now. What a wonderful journey you two have had. All love, and I chuckled at this reaction, poor Brad looked so tired, lol. Lex you were glowing and super energetic. Thanks this was great. Brad should revisit this. 😁😊

    This song is being critical of the emptiness of modern society and Los Angeles in particular. The band is from LA. This is the title track off their second album, "Toxicity". The cover art is the words "System of a Down" styled to look like the famous Hollywood sign in the LA.

    I feel like this song speaks to how consumerism and private ownership, how for every day working people as cogs in the system, they’re life’s remain mundane, numb, limited by existing systems put in place by those who came before us. Letting go of the consumer indoctrination pressed upon us, we stop comparing ourselves, our life’s, our relationships, are values…to others, instead letting go of everything we’ve been conditioned to believe we need to be happy, to be successful, to be content… experiencing this “letting go” is liberating.

    I always took the "eating seeds" as a reference to the 1915 Armenian genocide. The population was decimated & suffering.

    Brad appreciates the heavy!!! Yes! System of a down is great to forget everything for me. Anytime I need to work and put my brain away I just put the whole catalogue on. Still makes me think but not getting in the way of my work.

    The "thing" at 6:03, musicians might call it the Pocket or the Feel.
    My fellow friends and I we call it the "emmh", that feel of firmly tightening a screw, a bottle with that last action of "emmh".
    In scientific terms it is Synchronicity, when you get the vibe.

    My sister is a nurse and a mother to a boy. She joined the PTA at her son school and just your normal mother in her 30's raising her boy. But EVEN she has a goosebumps when she listen to Toxicity now. Her favorite song. I infected her with SOAD fever when we were young. LMAO.
