      Their powerplay was great too. It was organized and moved the puck well, creating many shooting opportunities. A massive credit needs to go to the Latvian coaching staff, this team was well coached and well organized from front to back and stifled us all night.

      @@TomBrown-m3d agree with you BUT have you looked at the NHL draft the last few yrs- more and more NCAA players are going in the 1st few rounds than Canada's junior b system- still a close #2 but fading- NCAA is developing some really good players and they come out of that program quite a bit more mature- which is important- another bonus of the NCAA program is that the players who don't make pro- maybe good players, got a scholarship and all- but quite often they got some good education along with there hockey which will help them in life- junior b leaves most young players adrift- most, like the NCAA program, is that most players don't go on to pro

      @@27gts Good point...it used to be parents who could afford their kids to play hockey while other opportunities for less fortunate players remained a pipe dream. Parents realize that their kids can be athletes and gain opportunity through school programs and guaranteed job opportunities for their futures. Since we have so many avenues to watch sports NCAA has become huge in every market...used to be basketball but hockey is more exposed and scouts are looking for prospects in all places. Just sad that YTSN doesn't show Canadian University football or Hockey because they kiss U.S revenue and fan base.

    WOW! How beautiful our Latvian guys looking!
    BUT - the most important thing is not to loose concentration in this win, which was always a big problem in Latvian teams... Latvia, also in pro level had wins over all champion countries, but eventually did not finish on top. The magic breakthrough was a 2023. bronze in World championships. But overall - it is around 7-9th place...which I think is still amazing for 1,8M country where those who have this priviledge(in Latvia it is priviledge - it is not affordable for normal family) to play hokey, are also quite motivated and determined, also to not just play in best leagues, but be best in those leagues.

      @hockeyaddict7007 so you don't think this is ever the case for every other team Canada? They always play teams with more chemistry. The Spangler Cup is even worse as it's club teams vs team Canada but Canada still wins regularly and passes circles around other teams. They keep looking eachother off, not seeing simple plays and standing in eachothers space. This is base level chemistry when an RD has the puck at the point his linemates should now where to go. They don't though they circle around like chickens with their heads cut off. If you can't see this idk what to tell you lol.

      @CoopHawke 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @hockeyaddict7007 I'd put my money on any past Canada world Jr. team beating Latvia. I've watched ever year this year and last year the teams have lacked chemistry. It's too many guys who think they're better than they are looking off teammates and trying to do it all themselves. Also you do understand team Canada at the Spengler Cup also couldn't make an NHL team? It's Canada's worst vs teams that have played professional hockey together for years. Team Latvia does not all play together all the time. In fact alot of the Canadian players played minor hockey together and against eachother just like every country. Acting like this team Latvia is special is ridiculous. Not that hard to see Canada took the wrong players, put together the wrong lines and have poor teamplay and strategy

    This kind of parity will only make the already great world juniors tourney greater. Interesting to me now is how Canada will respond. Great learning moment for the kids, and a great coaching opportunity. Canada has all the tools to win this still if they can capture the negative energy they are feeling now and channel it into a positive response. As a former competitive athlete I am sure many would agree that it’s better to lose the first game than the last one.

    Canadian here. Ashamed to say I saw some Canadian newspaper headlines saying "Embarrassing" loss for Canada. It was nothing of the sort. It think every hockey fan who watched was entertained. Canadian kids played a good game and outshot their opponent Latvia. Latvia played a fantastic game, especially defensively, and their goaltender played extremely well. A good game all round and a historic, and deserved, win for Latvia. Canadian kids did nothing to "embarrass" their country and should hold their heads high. Latvian kids played a terrific game, deserved the win, made their nation proud, and should thoroughly enjoy it. That's hockey baby. A sport that rewards hard work and team work as much as talent. I love it!

      Our nation, underestimated Latvia. Canada started a 17 year old goalie. Why? To build confidence. This tournament show cases, each country’s, best-of-the-best. With this, Canada’s goalie had a great game. But. This loss in my opinion is on the management & that late elbow we took. Latvia in the last 2-3 years has made major leaps, obviously Canada, forgot to take the blind fold off when they woke up!

    thank god canada didnt bring junior stars like Micheal Misa (1st in the OHL in scoring and 30g in 30 games) and Andrew Cristall (2nd in scoring in the WHL behind stud McKenna and actually well ahead if it was points per game since he missed a few), or the guy picked 3rd overall last year (3rd overall but not good enough to play vs Latvia ->though only 48 points in 28gp in the OHL...so, he clearly sucks this year).
    ...npc speak: "but but but...points aren't everything!" ....ugghhh...no...nope...they are when they are the most in the most competitive league on the planet.

    The Latvian coaches deserve a tremendous amount of credit for their game plan to allow their team to stay close. As the game went on, you could see the increased confidence level of the Latvian team. The Latvian goalkeeper was in the proverbial zone all game. Mark Messier expressed his concern over the cost to play hockey in Canada, and the decline in the number of kids playing hockey in Canada. I know we still have great players and a strong passion for the game, but I personally have noticed a big decline in the quality of players this country produces over years past. Goal tenders is one of the big red flags, but we'll see.

    Congrats to Latvia! Well earned win. I am glad to see this tournament with some parity. Blowouts are boring and unenjoyable to watch. I don't really take the WJC seriously because of all the lop sided games, so results like this are good to see. As for Canada, getting taken down a peg or two early on isn't a bad thing. A little humility is helpful when you are a favourite. And you will never go undefeated in a legitimate tournament. Better to lose now than in the medal round.
