RARE Train With Out Freight Rail Cars! Last Of Its Kind, Triple Crown Road Railer. Norfolk Southern

  • Weird Train! LONG Norfolk Southern Triple Crown Road Railer! Look How Many Truck Trailers Are On This Train. This train is in Clymers, Indiana on the Road Railer route from Detroit to Kansas City. 2 Trains pass and then we go to the railroad diamonds in nearby Logansport, Indiana to see some more NS trains. I also got Toledo, Peoria & Western Railroad hitting the diamonds and that will be in Part 2.
    Our first stop is Clymers, Indiana on Norfolk Southern. I rode up here with Scott, 1960gambit. Actually we stopped at Logansport first and I heard the Triple Crown train just leaving town. We missed it at the diamond by mere minutes. Then Scott got a text from The Railroad Tie Spiker who told us that the Triple Crown train was stopped in Clymers waiting for an eastbound manifest. We went to nearby Clymers where I also filmed the fire department. It is in a school house that was built in 1910. The manifest passed us within fifteen minutes or so. Right after it passed the Triple Crown train went westbound past us. The truck trailers sit on bogies and have auto parts in them coming from Detroit. They go to Kansas City on the last Triple Crown route. NS has talked about discontinuing this. Right now NS runs a Triple Crown each way everyday. We came here to try to get the eastbound evening train but never saw it. We got this only because it was running a few hours late. I filmed one in 2015 on the NS line in Walton, Kentucky shortly after I started my channel. It was right after that when NS discontinued them except for one route. See Trains Magazine for more information.
    Next, we go to Logansport, Indiana to get some trains at the diamonds. We see a long westbound manifest. The next train in this video is a night train and the last train that we filmed on this trip. I actually filmed a TP&W train waiting to cross the diamond after an NS train. That will be in Part 2 along with a local switcher that stopped in Logansport. I had too many trains for one video but the second video will be just as good as this one. The best frequencies for these areas are 160.860 for NS, 161.400 for TP&W and 452.9375 for end of train device. This video has better shots of the bogies than the one I filmed in July. I got some straight on shots for the people who requested them. This is really a great video of the Triple Crown Road Railer.
    Filmed Thursday, October 12, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

    The "Triple Crown" train could be considered the Grandfather of inter-modals. Nice to see them still running, but I know their days are numbered.
    Thank you Jaw Tooth for another wonderful half hour!
    So thankful you do these videos - I'm getting a lot of ideas for scenic spots on my model railroad, learning a lot of things about the area around me, seeing amazing trains, and being able to relax as I watch them.
    May God always protect and bless you!

      I've never gotten to run a roadrailer trailer. I hear they're heavy. Use to see ads for them in the "throw-a-ways" at truck stops. Their main yard is in FT Wayne. Amtrak use to pull mail with them out of Chicago.

    That was a great Triple Crown train. It's really unfortunate that they are phasing them out. It seems like a much more efficient way to ship trailers with less handling. Thanks for catching one of the last of it's kind JT! 😊😊😊❤❤

      The problem is they aren't efficient. They improved when they changed the design but it's still more efficient and cost effective to do TOFC/COFC.

    • @benpluta3924
      @benpluta3924 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They are also heavier than a normal van trailer so less freight per trailer which is less efficient.

    It was amazing when Road railer came out how many railroads and trucking companies we're on the bandwagon. For several years there was a daily Fort Wayne to Twin Cities run which used NS power and ran on the UP from Chicago Westward. Sadly once the Ford truck plant closed that was the bulk of the business and also probably paid the best and it was dropped shortly thereafter. With those Mega trains you shot that line does have its good share of 89 ft Auto Parts boxcars which also are disappearing and fewer roads own or operate them. The night shot came out very good as one could make out the reporting marks on at least 90% of the cars. All it was missing there was hobo shoestring cooking dinner in the camp.

  • @rodneydavis324
    @rodneydavis324 ปีที่แล้ว

    The technology is so simplistic. It is actually beautiful. The trailer sits on a truck-set and each truck set is connected by a hydraulic hose that runs along the bottom of the trailer. It is brilliant!

    Nice catch. Hey about a year ago you commented on my 1 abandoned RR bridge and asked abput the spur on main j 10th in Northampton PA. I finally saw a train there. It didn't cross main Street but i did see a switcher moving along by the volunteer fire dept. I live in this area and went to school here (go Konkrete Kids) and in 20 years (im 37) never caught a train here. Oh and at the sigfried station on rt329 they are building a new highway bridge. Lots going on in the area where Americas first Portland cement plant is and the world's first coal fire kilns for cement and steel. Everyone else was burning wood or charcoal. Fall foliage festival in jim Thorpe is on now too if ya want some steam videos.have a great blessed day Mr Jawtooth. Huge fan and proud to have seen your comment and like. You rock Brian. Be safe.

    Good afternoon Mr Jaw Tooth. Until I saw this video I had never seen and never heard of Roadrailer. However, I Googled it and have read up on it. Apparently we had the system here in the UK on one line (East Coast Line) from 1964, but it didn't last long and in the end the weight of the extra wheels for the railway made the trucks too heavy to be economical when used on the road. So, after nearly three years of watching your videos, I am still learning new things.

  • @TheGospelQuartetParadise
    @TheGospelQuartetParadise ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Instead of phasing triple-crown out, the railroads should be considering more of these types of trains. Looking at the minimal spacing between cars, looks like they are almost theft-proof, because no crooks are going to get those doors open. I heard they can run these trains up to 155 units [i didn't count this one], which is pretty fuel-efficient for a single locomotive.

    Night shots are difficult. Ya wanna illuminate the train w/o blinding the road crew. Short of catching the trains at Amtrak stations or sticking with the street runners I aint sure how ya pull it off. But I appreciate ya sharing with us! Oh, and the 1st freight, prolly the most 86ft hicubes I've seen in a long time. Great catch.

    I drove a semi truck for 30 yrs, the company used roadrailers for awhile, two designed drawbacks caused its doom. Trailers are 3k heavier, a very large amount of freight we hauled now made use overweight. To link units together there is a nose at front of trailer that sticks out 18 inches, either you tore up hoses or lines at back of truck or you slid tandems to the back end. Now you were likely overweight on drive tandems.

    It was great seeing the Road Railers still being run. In the early days of Road Railers they were pulled by 4 axle locomotives. One 4 axle locomotive could pull 72 loaded vans, if there were 73 vans in the consist another 4 axle locomotive was added. That big 6 axle locomotive was pulling 124 vans as noted by an earlier commentor. I am not a fan of night videos. Do you know where the second train (that crossed the diamonds) was coming from/going to? A great video.

    I enjoyed watching this video, Jaw Tooth! It was nice that the Triple Crown Road Railer trailer train again. I had originally thought that we would never see another video of a Triple Crown Road Railer train because you mentioned in your June 2023 video of a similar train that the Norfolk Southern was going to stop running this train. I wonder how long Norfolk Southern will continue this train. The night train was difficult to see. The whole train was a silhouette as it passed in the dark. You could have used some light on the subject. The location where you caught that last train in the dark would have been a suitable location to see an eclipse of the moon.
