Rescuing a Converted SPACE WOLF

  • This week I tackle this awesome Space Wolf conversion sent in by Jason M. I wanted to explore a few new techniques as well as using actual texture on a model to make it pop even more. I feel like it comes across a little better in person than on camera, but the effect works in person wonderfully! It was fun trying to up my NMM game, and while I may have not quite gotten there this week, I feel like there was progress.
    Thank you Jason for sending in this donation, I hope you enjoy the video!

    Donating Minis:
    Probably 3/4 minis shown on this channel were donated. They do not get sent back, if you would like to have a mini on the channel and have it sent back to you please see the commissions section just below.
    If you would like to donate a mini to be rescued on the channel then please send me an email with the type of mini, pictures if you can, and a little bit about the history of the mini! Donations have become a big part of the channel and I want to do as much as I can to share the story and history along with painting your mini! I do ask that the minis be at least partially painted, something you may have gotten on ebay, or just something that you started and never finished, that way it fits the criteria of a "rescue." Unfortunately I cannot accept every donation, as much as I would like to, I just don't have the time to take on every project. That being said I do take on almost all of them, as long as they fit the theme of the channel I try and make sure to fit them into the schedule. I appreciate each and every person who has donated to the cause, you have all helped make this channel better for me and for everyone watching, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!
    Commissions:
    CURRENTLY ACCEPTING - Single figures, small squads. No armies please, i wish I could, but I can't paint an entire army in a week.
    Commissions are a big part of what keeps this channel going.I always try and be as fair and open as possible with each commission, and in most cases, make a video to go along with the job. Not in all cases, but many. The type of commissions I am interested in are of a "rescue" nature. So something that you have had laying around, or something that you started, or someone started and didn't finish. If you want something new then I am still interested but please understand that if it doesn't fit within the theme of the channel then it probably won't get featured in a video.
    I do commissions for $15/hour plus shipping and supplies. I will also give you a free estimate that I will honor for 6 months from the date on the estimate. Thank you all again for your submissions, and helping keep the lights on here at EMR!

    I'd love to see more basing. Right now I just paste some sand on the base, paint, and drybrush it.

    I would love to see basing, even a bit slower than this. It's part of painting/creating a mini.
    Great work once again!

    I've found that particular gold takes inks over it really well to give it the colour you want. Can make it look really rich and interesting. Same with the silvers I like to use a watered down blue on silver and a mix of yellow red and violet on the gold.

      @ArynCrinn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This.
      Inks are the real secret to Gold/Copper/Brass tones in Vallejo Metal Color.
      And you can even mix the inks with the metallic paint when you apply it.

    I enjoyed the basing work, you're rescuing the whole mini if you include it. It helps, even if all you do is a quick rundown of what you did, similar to this episode. It helps to tie everything together sometimes.

    Show the basing work. You do beautiful stuff. But sometimes the base is what really sells a figure. And if nothing is said about it, I just stare at the base and try to figure out if it's premade or if you made it. And if you made it, how did you get the textures and effects on it. So, yes, please do show base work. Even if it's just a quick run through of what you did and what you used to do it.

    First, I'll always give a like for showing off 'trying new things' because that is always the biggest hang up I find people have. You don't get good at something without trying and messing up a few times.
    Second, I love using pigments. My bases, vehicles, & buildings all get some pigment love. I've got a handful of FW Red Scorpions that I did just black primer and pigments for a cooled off volcanic wastes sort of look. Get some of the pigment on the lower parts of the model and it ties it to the base so well.

    One of my newest compulsions is not painting guns metallic silver. Taking a look at most modern guns, very few have what us mini-painters would consider a true metallic finish.

    I like the quick basing blitz you added in there. Basing isnt really the focus of your channel but it is nice to know the kind of techniques you use espesially if you have any tips to do them quickly. Personally i hate basing so anything i can learn to make them look good for minimal effort is good for me!

    One thing I really noticed, and that really interested me, about your approach in this video is how you treat his sideburns. You keep just splashing face paint on them, and then you paint over them with the hair color over and over. I mean, while I'm not personally a huge fan of how they turned out - I would have liked them to be much more in contrast with the face surface, (and I kept groaning to myself that you didn't mention or pay attention to those vital attributes of his face) that doesn't matter. I did some mini painting myself many many years ago, and I think I would have been super stressed about painting his face and sideburns, trying to avoid splashing the color over the edges. But your process really echoes what you say about making mistakes, and just doing over. It's just paint!

      Thanks for the feedback!
      I’m always trying to improve, going back and forth, especially continually hitting those sideburns, was a chore. In the end I was pretty happy with his face, it definitely could be better, but I know the next time I do it I will feel even better about that one. It really is about taking those past paint jobs and just working towards the next one. Every week is a new adventure!

    My favorite gold is actual Plaid Liquid Leaf paint. It's a one step leafing paint that comes in a few colors. It's used by the crafter crowd to do cheap faux gold leafing. Looks like real gold, copper, brass, etc.
    One thing to remember don't use it with good brushes. This stuff is hard on them.

    I just thought I would mention here, in case it can help anyone else out, that concrete pigment works really good to get the "white frosty" look on armor.

    I think the basing worked, definitely reminded me of art of Fenris. The pigment looks really fun to use and might pick it up. You mentioned chain mail with green stuff, do you recommend any tutorials on how to do that? Sounds really cool!

      There are a few quick tutorials on TH-cam, including one from Warhammer tv, though none of them really look like chain mail, more like weird fur. I’m gonna try a few different things and see what I can put together.

    good work on the paint job, just letting you know that not all space wolves use yellow as a primary colour on their left pauldron. The left pauldron on a Space Wolfe is used to designate company, in this case the model has the symbol of the BloodMaws which use an off white instead of a yellow pauldron colour.

    Hm, I should try some of that primer next time I order stuff too. I've also been using Vallejo, and found pretty much the same as you. I use a lot of 3D printed models, and the self-leveling effect of the polyurethane works nicely to hide print lines... but it also tends to clog the airbrush, particularly late in the bottle.

    hey so i have a squad of space marines that were my first minis i painted and are hot garbage. they are 2000s space marines and i used citidel paints. whats good paint stripper for it?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use LAs Totally Awesome, it’s a concentrated cleaner/degreaser. I put that into a sonic jewelry cleaner and run the minis for a few cycles, then use a toothbrush to get the paint off. I would suggest, and of course this is my opinion, that you don’t strip your first models, or at least not all of them. Keeping your first models is a good reminder of how much you progress over time. Completely up to you of course :)
