WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG: The most ambitious Timetable Challenge yet to Newcastle and Carlisle.

  • I was determined to make Timetable Challenge #3 memorable, but it was to be memorable for the wrong reasons. I caught LNER to Newcastle, explored the Newcastle Metro, caught a Northern Trains service to Carlisle and then the problems began.

Memories for me - my uncle adopted a rescue dog that was found going back and forth on the ferry between North and South Shields. What an epic challenge to make all these misc connections, Scott. You are certainly a real timetable junkie. The Avanti train is wonderful!

Great video .. enjoyable to watch. Two points though ..
(1)You were initially heading to North Shileds on the Tyne & Wear Metro but got off at West Jesmond. If you had stayed on the same train, it was only 14 more stops to North Shields, but it was actually longer (16 stops) going back via Newcastle Central to South Shields
(2)If you take the ferry from South Shields to North Shields, there's a free bus from near the ferry landing up to the Metro Station, meaning you don't have to walk up that steep hill.
    Regards from Whitley Bay

I'm not sure why the County Council had a timetable up where you were standing for the Carlisle to Lockerbie bus, but you are meant to pick the bus up either at the 'country services' stand at the Courts (the bottom one, just outside the station) or at the market at the other end of the city centre. It is one of those split bus services to meet the law on how long a stage carriage service can be, so it ends at Gretna then continues on the same bus but technically a different journey from Gretna to Lockerbie. Cumbria has lots of those and the publicity is often confusing. Plan B would have been the 1816 X95 to Galashiels for Edinburgh, or the 1810 service 79 to Dumfries direct. There were rail replacement coaches from Lockerbie for every timetabled train, so they were running until very late, after 2200. There was no real danger of getting stranded at Carlisle or Lockerbie. I have now checked, the timetable at The Courts does state that 382 route buses go to Lockerbie, the one at Devonshire Street is listing ALL buses which go VIA gretna (very few of which terminate there).

It's so good to see the young at heart , 💜, out and about , living their lives , wether it be on 'planes , trains and everything ' , or trekking the park tracks , and thourghly enjoying themselves .
It would be so cool to still have Trams running where I live - pretty much every town of size had a tramways , now they are gone , in favour of clogged up motorways and no parking spaces for cars .

The bus going straight past the station in Dumfries doesn't sound like joined up transport! Luckily it didn't matter which way you went to get the North/South Shields ferry (I have used it when working on Tyneside in pre-Metro days). Good luck for your next one.

    • @michaelocyoung
      @michaelocyoung 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I guess it depends where in "London" you're changing - if it's outside Zone 1 (say Tottenham Hale or Cheshunt) and you get the timing right and ride a load of slow trains in the process I imagine that there would be a decent saving.

As usual, another great video Scott, thoroughly enjoyable ! I’m a little confused why you got off that Metro at West Jesmond as it looked like it was heading to St James via the coast so would have gone to North Shields (albeit via Whitley Bay) and is a nicer way round on the top loop rather than the bottom. Whilst it’s slightly longer going round that way it would have been no slower than doubling back! As somebody else mentioned there’s a bus between North Shields Town Centre to the Ferry and it’s free to use if you are using the Ferry. Maybe handy for next time!

I'm from Canada and a few years ago we did a road trip all over the UK, eventually ending up in Calgary on Mull (I'm from Calgary in Canada, so that's why we went there). Our first stop in Scotland was Lockerbie, right around suppertime, so we stopped off at a restaurant to grab a bite to eat. My girlfriend got fish and chips, and I decided to try, for the first time in my life, haggis. I did so with some trepidation as the ingredient list was very off-putting, but I tried it and.... absolutely fell in love with haggis! I had it five more times during our time in Scotland, each time different, each time delicious.
Alas, you just can't get a good haggis here in Canada....

Then returned to Carlisle to see Carlisle Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated, Carlisle Cathedral, Museum rtc. Then return to Glasgow & stay for 2 nights before returning by train to London.

You pass into England much quicker on the east side as Berwick is much further north than Carlisle.Other than the Tyne Foot ferry ⛴️ there are another two ferries internally in the north east. The Kielder Water one and the Transporter Bridge from Port Clarence,a village a bit south of Hartlepool,to Middlesbrough. The Transporter is a sort of hybrid between a ferry, bridge and cable car and sadly broken at the moment and facing an uncertain future.I suppose that you could count the Seahouses to Farne Islands boats as ferries too so 4.

Wow! You must have been exhausted. How do you find the Metro when you just got to a town on another form of transportation? Bewildering I’m amazed how you put it together, successful or not, the planning was great. Good work!!

I really enjoy your videos but they would be 100% better if you have prices at the end. Thanks
