  • In this video we say goodbye to my home in Indiana and the bees and HELLO to Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines! My first visit to this community was 19 years ago and it was love at first sight. Ever since the day I first set eyes on this wonderful city I've been dreaming of the day I could call it home. Finally, that day has come and you'll be able to tell by the expression on my face throughout the video that I couldn't be happier. Special shoutout to the Mayong's Bakery truck for stopping by every morning and making sure I'm awake. LOL

      Thank you so much for the kind words, greeting and blessing. I truly appreciate it and I have to agree with you on your description of me. I do appreciate simple things and this country has been very good to me and I love every minute I get to be here. Even when things don't go exactly the way I'd like them to, there is still so much to be thankful for. God is good all the time and when I'm here I see his power and brilliance all around me at all times. This is a great place to grow in faith and become closer to God because his majesty is all around us and touches so many of the people I encounter every day. Welcome to the channel and I hope to hear from you again soon. God Bless you always.

      Filipinos are Awesome! Yes, this country is beautiful, yes, I love the mountains, and the ocean and the scenery, but day in and day out the best part about living here is the interactions I have with normal Filipinos on the street that I meet every day. It doesn't matter where I go, every day I bump into people who are so genuinely nice that it freaks me out because in the back of my mind I have to wonder if I've met this person before because they call me "my friend" all the time and I wonder, are they actually my friend and I forgot their name? Then I spend the rest of the day confused if that random person was just really nice, or did someone introduce me to them before. LOL I can't think of anything better. People are so positive and wonderful here.

    I been to the PI twice around 2005 and 2006 and it has changed my life seeing all the poverty. I hope to start a profitable business to support my living which I dont need much as I am frugal and have savings, but more importantly I want to have enough to start some kind of philanthropy. I am thinking street kids and having a school so they can develop skills. I hope my business will be so successful that I can house and feed then until 18 or so so that they have the skill set to have a career! Its a stretch goal and dream of mine and I hope I can do something positive for the world before my time is up!

I know there are a great many charities here who help people, and my wife and I have contributed to several relief efforts following natural disasters and for good causes. In my personal practice though, my goal for helping is to make my business absolutely as big and profitable as possible as I can so that some day I can employ people and provide meaningful work and fair wages. Nothing lifts the spirit like the pride of earning your living honestly. We'll talk soon. God bless and please make sure your donations to the poor and needy are done through reputable non-profits.

They showed me a lot of encouragement and support for this new venture. However, the predominant experts in the art and science of beekeeping in the Philippines are at UP Los Banos. Dr. Cleo Cervancia is a well known expert in her field and known around the world for her research. I've had the pleasure of attending one of her seminars via zoom from the US during the pandemic and she is a treasure in the world of beekeeping.

      @@beekeepinginparadise5935 we are retiring in Samal, Davao del Norte in Mindanao. We already have a house there and a little farm. We are planning to hopefully plant some fruit trees, raise chickens and do some traveling. Our place is an island and a 1 hour commute to the city of Davao on a ferry boat. I am praying everyday for peace and good healthy life and stable economy. We are not planning to work anymore and make more money, we just want a peaceful and safe life for our retirement.
      I am sure you and wife are much younger than us, I wish you all the best and prosperity in your business venture in the Philippines. Who knows you can have steady source of honey and wax for you to have business in the Mall. Have you considered a scented candle business? That is probably something to explore. Philippines this time is a developing nation, due to that, we have chances to introduce new forms of businesses. There are large number of returning retired OFWs ( overseas foreign workers) all over the world who have some money to spend on items we are used to have while living abroad for a long period of time. This is why I was thinking about scented candle making. You can pretty much order your materials in Lazada Philippines ( AMAZON EQUIVALENT).

      Thank you again for your warm comments and encouragement. I would love to make candles. The issue with pure beeswax candles is that they are naturally lightly fragrant and smokeless and are said to purify the air as they burn. Adding scented oils to the wax actually detracts from part of the reason they are so desirable and historically insisted on by the Catholic Church in Rome. I really hope that you and I can keep in touch. I enjoy hearing from you very much.

    • @beekeepinginparadise5935
      @beekeepinginparadise5935  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim, you've got me laughing. I think your perception doesn't exactly match my reality. Just a little background. We don't actually fly back and forth to the Philippines all that often. We've tried to come more often since our daughter was born, but because of the pandemic, we haven't been here since January of 2020. We do have a nice house in Indiana, but it's a modest 1970's house that we picked up a few years ago after the housing bubble burst and prices dropped. To answer your question about our work, I spent 14 years doing office work in a steel mill and for the past 12 years my wife has been a union steel worker at the same plant and we worked our tails off to be able to build this house here in the Philippines and to acquire a little bit of land to work and to pass down to our daughter after we're gone. In order to do that we haven't bought a new car for the past 20 years. Our newest cars are always 10 years old with at least 100,000 miles on them at the time we purchase them. Additionally, even though our company had a generous vacation policy, unless we were coming here, we limited ourselves to a single 1 week driving vacation per year and usually we would go somewhere that offered us a steep discount on a room if we'd sit through a time share presentation. It was always fun in it's own way. I guess I'm saying that you don't have to be rich to do what we've done. My wife and I just share important priorities and work like crazy and make certain sacrifices in order to make our dreams come true. I hope that makes sense. God bless.

I remarked that I have total respect for them. They have the hardest job of anyone and earn the smallest pay. They are part of the culture and are ambassadors for every city that they work in. Even though they are slow, and can bog down traffic, their job is critical to keeping the vibe of the old Philippines alive and I don't have the physical strength to do what they do for an hour, let alone all day every day like they do. We should all celebrate the hard work these men do for us. They truly deserve a monument in a place of glory somewhere in this nation.

    Hello from California. Please keep your vids coming. Interested in how you found the farm, how you paid while in US. I’m originally from Bacolod City, plan to retire somewhere in PI eventually. Vehicle vids will also be something I will be interested in. Looking forward to learning about Leyte through you. I’m glad to learn about beekeeping too.

      Wonderful! It sounds like you and I share a lot of common interests. I am an absolute car nut! I love all kinds of vehicles and I would love to share interesting ones here on the channel if people are interested. I'm not a travel vlog, but certainly, when I travel around I still like to bring the go-pro and make videos. There won't be as many of those, because so many other people do it so much better than I can, but I'll try to include some now and then just to show the surroundings. Good luck in your retirement plans. The Philippines is waiting for you. Welcome to the channel and God bless!

    I was born in Leyte and spent part of my childhood in Tacloban.its amazing,as Leyte has two dialects,Southern is Cebuano and Northern is Waray.actually,one town named Mcarthur has Waray dialect,but the very next town Abuyog which is close to Baybay people speak Cebuano.Attended Final 4 in Indianapolis in the 90s.My Filipino friend still works in Richmond .i live in Texas. Passed thru Baybay ages ago.Seems where you live looks like residential areas in Latin American countries ive visited.Looks quaint.Love it.hope you will be able to connect to other expats nearby,as you may get homesick periodically.

      I am so glad you've decided to join the channel! Thank you for watching and welcome! Leyte is an amazing place and it's really cool that two separate dialects are spoken here. My wife learned Waray while she attended UP Tacloban. It's so funny that you point out the historic vibe of the town. In the USA my favorite place to visit is the French Quarter of New Orleans...which ironically was built and designed during the Spanish era. My wife and I both loved going there because it reminded us so much of walking the streets of Baybay City. I'm sure the time will come when I crave hanging out with other foreigners, but I truly enjoy spending as much time with as many Filipinos as possible. I am enjoying meeting new people and learning from them. I have a goal of learning Cebuano as quickly as I can and I will need an immersive environment in order to do that. The more time I spend speaking English with foreigners the harder it is to learn the local language. I'm really a slow learner when it comes to languages anyway, but I'm trying very hard. Again, thank you for watching. God Bless.

As for traveling around: No I've not yet been to Limasawa Island. My little truck doesn't do very well on long trips. It keeps breaking down, but my family and I have been to the Quatro Islas. We went before the pandemic on a previous vacation here. We took a pump boat tour out of Inopacan and had a great day. Honestly, other than a mask mandate that I hope goes away soon, things are pretty much back to normal around here. I wish you all the best in your retirement and I hope you can come back here before long.

    16:44 Surplus Suzuki Multicabs that were imported from Japan only perform well for the first 10 years. Expect a lot of headache after the first 10 years.
    They only welded some parts during the conversion to left hand drive. Make sure to have the weldings checked from time to time.

    • @beekeepinginparadise5935
      @beekeepinginparadise5935  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you know so much about this stuff? LOL do you live here or were you here before, or just a big JDM fan? Ours is probably over 10 years old. I think it was second hand when we got it...not a new conversion and we've had it for over 7 years now. I have my eye on a fresh conversion mini-van model now, I'm thinking of having it custom made with a 4x4 and a modest lift kit because the roads out to the farm are absolutely brutal at the moment.

    • @kswsquared
      @kswsquared 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beekeepinginparadise5935 Agree. The Multicabs are very useful but you'll definitely have to keep on top of the maintenance, and have the body checked out from time to time.
      Now from our experience here's a few tips:
      For brutal farmwork, the most sough-after here down south would be the Suzuki Carry from 1990-1991. It's older but it's twice the price of the newer models.
      It will have DA51T/DB51T on the nameplate that's under the passenger seat, and it's the one that has the flat window-sill/shoulder line on the front doors. That model year has fewer electrics. Its things like the radiator fan runs on belts off the engine and not on electric motors so they take a beating better. We have 3 of those and we use them on highland banana plantations. Mountainous terrain on rough roads, and some parts are flat but muddy. They don't bog down as much as heavier pickup trucks. We've had ours fitted with extra leaf springs to cope with the heavy loads we have, and we kept the 13" wheels and we run the knobby Deestones.
      The later model years tend to get lots of gremlins in the electrics if put through the same level of work...
