I love Johnny Cash's song in my opinion he is one of the greatest country singers. There will never be anyone like Johnny Cash again. He is a one of a kind. When he died country music lost a very important singer
This ranks right up there with the best of unlikeliest duets with David Bowie and Bing Crosby singling the Little Drummer Boy. . . . They are flat out perfect together. . . Joni gets so much credit for her incredible songwriting that it is easy to forget what a wonderful instrument she had as a voice. . . . and Cash well he is just archetypically good. . . Wonderful song as well absolutley love it. Thanks for posting.
Powerful. I've had it on heavy rotation for months. I'm sure my neighbors think I'm a nut. But seriously, they are great with each other. She listens to him and warmly responds to his cues in a soulful, calm way. Deep deep stuff. Seriously, over and over.
Thanks John Carter Cash for providing this WONDERFUL video. I could watch it again and again and again!!! I have read a lot of nitpicking about the pre-song banter and other things as well, but it is the performance that counts! If only today's artist could just sit down and sing that pure and heartfelt. Good music, good performances transcend the generations and the ages. A friend of mine used to play this song all the time. I think of him when I hear this song.
im from brazil and today i see her singing for the first time, wow what voice shes amazing , when she sings, it vibrations... it captures deep inside your soul!!
Just love Joni's pure folk soprano voice in those early days. Chrystal clear folk voice! Of course singer/s voices change as they get older - but I think her heavy smoking also played into it causing her voice changing so, so much over the years. I still remember when I was 19 and taking a music/voice class at a junior college (yes we used to call them Jr. College years ago) and the instructor telling us that smoking would change our voice and not for the better.
wikipedia says she started smoking at 9 and has no regrets for her 'terrible habits' you have to kind of love that bad ass attitude in a package so sweet :-)
Yeah her voice started to change for the worse around 1975. She lost a good portion of her range which is such a shame as she had an exceptional sound. That is sadly one of the many dangers that come with smoking.
A guy I used to know used to sing this song. I would always "zone out", or I didn't get it at the time. I wish that I had heard this--I get it now. I think. Johnny Cash is immortal. Joni Mitchell is a Living Legend. Mr. Cash was a visionary for giving a 'nod' to Ms. Mitchell on his TV show. What do I know? I didn't 'get' "Ring of Fire" for a long time. Sue me.
Johnny puts it down and Joni takes flight. What an awesome duo for this song. Both humble to be a part of this glorious rendention. Thanks JC and JM, you tucked me in to bed tonight real good...
For a while now, the version of this song performed by Gillian Welch has been my favorite, but this duet is simply amazing. Thank you for posting this performance!
This is by far one of Johnnys top 3. My personal favorite duo. Deep ! Nothing intertwines the hippie movement and old guard country. Johnny spent his career trying to do it.
Unfortunate, sometimes, how you don't appreciate something fully until it's gone. With the passing of Johnny Cash, America lost a national treasure. It's a void that can't be filled. We won't see his likes ever again.
I have heard Johnny Cash sing this song at least a hundred times but had never heard it as a duet with Ms. Mitchell. I got goose bumps when she did her solo ! What a haunting rendition of a mournful ballad! Thanks for posting
holy smokes,,joni quietly tears a new hole in this country song!! and at such a tender age,,id hope she could see how amazing this is now* and of course johhnies timing is too cool..thanks for posting this!!
what a great version of this song. jonie mitchell is so cute. and johnny is the man. jonie mitchell is excellent in this song. really adds a great flow.
It doesn't get much better than this. Joni & Johnny together singing this classic song. My big brother taught me to play this song on his guitar when I was only nine patiently assisting my little fingers to make the chords. Thanks, Carters01 for this touching video of these two great musicians. 5 stars and to my "favorites".
I saw Roseanne Cash perform last night. She performed this song and did her father proud. Thanks for posting this video. Joni and Johnny are true legends.
So when you and I croak and hopefully we've passed life's test and get to heaven------don't you wish God's Angels can sing this good ! Hark the Angels sing !! Long live Rock and Roll, Berry, Lennon ,Cash and Strummer.
amazing to think that performances like this on network tv were quite common on various variety shows in the 60s and 70s. im lucky to be old enough to have seen them . wow... how far tv has fallen!!
see them singing together is too much for me! I love Joni Mitchell, and I'm a fan of cash. What else to say? Two angels together. Just missing June Carter
she sang this with such ease,,like ohh go high? go low? noo problem,,as others have said,,she REALLY does country great,,and wish shed sing a whole albums worth,,thanks again*
Two voices that couldn't be more unlike each other, his, wine aged in oak casks, hers as clear &crisp as apple cider. But they compliment each other, just the same.
When I was 10 I found my Dad's copy of Cash's Sun Recordings. I've been a huge fan ever since. Sold that vinyl in a garage sale for a dime, but I now have the same recording on CD. Not the greatest voice or talent, but damn, how he touches the heart.
Josh, I recommend that you listen to the song "Sunday Morning Coming Down"--it was written by Kris Kristofferson. The best version, IMO, is when they sang it as a duet. Also, check out "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Hurt" by Trent Reznor. Johnny covered the latter in the last years of his life, and I dare any true fan not to get emotional while listening to it and watching that video.
Agreed. Heather. I only watch the "Hurt" video when I'm alone - no need to embarrass myself by showing the depth of my emotional response to that performance - every time.
Maybe in the USA. But, she appeared on Canadian network TV a long time before this. This is the first time I've seen this. I love both of them. TH-cam at it's best.
Nobody can sing this song better then this two great persons. Beautiful.
I love Johnny Cash's song in my opinion he is one of the greatest country singers. There will never be anyone like Johnny Cash again. He is a one of a kind. When he died country music lost a very important singer
God, I love the way Joni harmonizes. Sends shivers up my spine.
This ranks right up there with the best of unlikeliest duets with David Bowie and Bing Crosby singling the Little Drummer Boy. . . . They are flat out perfect together. . . What a duet!! I never get tired of Johnny Cash, a man with a guitar, a song, and the heart and soul to sing it, blended with Joni. Awesome.
Joni’s voice weaving through Johnny’s. Bliss. Like watch fresh cream slowly poured into good coffee.
joni's voice is so fluid, amazing as always.
their music together is beautiful.
This is actually the best version of this song. Joni was so beautiful then. Voice of a angel.
Their voices complement each other very well, Joni's being in the high range and Johnny's so low. What a great song.
Thanks John Carter Cash for providing this WONDERFUL video. I could watch it again and again and again!!! im from brazil and today i see her singing for the first time, wow what voice shes amazing , when she sings, it vibrations... it captures deep inside your soul!!
Joni's voice is so hauntingly beautiful on this song....wow...just incredible.
For country Johnny Cash is still my favorite. No one could come close to him. I still play his cd;s in my car. God bless him.
Just love Joni's pure folk soprano voice in those early days. Chrystal clear folk voice! Of course singer/s voices change as they get older - but I think her heavy smoking also played into it causing her voice changing so, so much over the years.

Some fucking thing about this woman--something that just resonates in the soul, made me smile, shake my head and tear up all at once.
What a great American, a great Southerner and a great Arkansan....RIP, J.R.
Possibly the two greatest singers of all time!
Joni is so good and John is classic. i can not think of a better combo.
The only question I have is how was the stage able to hold all that immense talent? Simply wonderful.
For a while now, the version of this song performed by Gillian Welch has been my favorite, but this duet is simply amazing. Thank you for posting this performance!
I love Gillian Welch too.
This is by far one of Johnnys top 3. My personal favorite duo. Deep ! Nothing intertwines the hippie movement and old guard country. Johnny spent his career trying to do it.
Two Legends together ...WOW ...never knew they sang this ...what a blessing !! LOVE them both...xo
Oh yeah, on the goose bumps. wow. Oh man. Joni Mitchell, Doug Kershaw AND Dylan. Johnny Cash sure had some pull. I'd never heard this before. Thanks!
i hung my head, hurt, ring of fire, in my life, basically any song has a deep meaning but those are some i hold dear
joni mitchell, what a wonderful voice!!!!
OMG! My two favorite artists together! Back when music was music...
So many people in my circle of friends perform this song at coffeehouses and such.
Great treatment by "Joni & Johnny."
Real quality - that pretty much sums up that era-a much different time.
true voices and music. The Great Johnny Cash, and Joni Mitchell..Doesn't get better than that
When I listen to Mr Cash, I have tears in my eyes
holy smokes,,joni quietly tears a new hole in this country song!! and at such a tender age,,id hope she could see how amazing this is now* and of course johhnies timing is too cool..thanks for posting this!!

Great song, great talent. Never heard of Joni Mitchell but I like her. And i miss JC :( wish he was still around.

How exactly can you have never heard of Joni???? Wow. She is an icon. I'm glad you've discovered her!
I may be an SRV fan, but the man I actually admire and respect the most is Johnny Cash! This song gives me goosebumps
JC & JM together on the same stage what a tour that could have been. Love em both
"Nobody knows, nobody see, nobody knows but me"
superb - great and humble music like this just isn't made anymore, at least not on TV.
i'm in heaven--i had no idea this duet existed. thank you, thank you.
So when you and I croak and hopefully we've passed life's test and get to heaven------don't you wish God's Angels can sing this good ! Hark the Angels sing !! Long live Rock and Roll, Berry, Lennon ,Cash and Strummer.
Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell. TH-cam doesn't get any better than this.
WOW!! Give me the chills. They both were so young and beautiful! Their voices go so well together!!
So beautiful, very moved by this. You could never see something good like this on tv nowadays.

Awesome, two of many of my all time favourite artists! They sound GREAT together. Wow.

Johnny was some kind of man wasn't he. And Joni could sing and still does so many kinds of music. Both extremely unique talents. Love 'em both.

I loved this! Thank you for posting.

dear lord, how come johnny is so freaking charming
Gorgeous version of this haunting song.
JCRS
Josh, I recommend that you listen to the song "Sunday Morning Coming Down"--it was written by Kris Kristofferson. The best version, IMO, is when they sang it as a duet. Also, check out "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Hurt" by Trent Reznor. Johnny covered the latter in the last years of his life, and I dare any true fan not to get emotional while listening to it and watching that video.
Agreed. Heather. I only watch the "Hurt" video when I'm alone - no need to embarrass myself by showing the depth of my emotional response to that performance - every time.
Bill Stephenson Oh, my gosh, me too. I weep ugly tears every single time I play it. This song gets me misty-eyed, but "Hurt" makes me sob.
Gee, this is fine. Thank you for posting it.
Fantastic range she has- rich alto and beautiful soprano notes.
This is such a beautiful song. Joni Mitchell has a honeydew voice.
Thanks! I'm one. But Johnny is so gracious! I love this clip!
Simply beautiful!
Maybe in the USA. But, she appeared on Canadian network TV a long time before this.
This is the first time I've seen this. I love both of them. TH-cam at it's best.
Don't ignore, its odd but, if you love then both, it's a great compilation, which you won't forget..
